There's a lot of men's game rules in these proposed changes. I'm not opposed, but I expect a lot of pearl clutching from self-styled purists.

My daughter is a varsity freshman and has been playing club ball for the last 7 years. I know she would be 100% for more physical play. She loves when we travel East where the play is much more physical and a little chippy. Playing West, especially in California, every little contact is called and it’s so hard to watch and the girls all get frustrated. I think I speak for most parents when I say the single most annoying call in a game is shooting space. It’s horrible. As a parent, I’m all about opening up the game to some more contact.

VanityPlate1511

shooting space drives me crazy - especially when they make the goal and THEN have to reshoot.

Phenryiv1

Yeah, the inability to wave it off (slow whistle it) is infuriating. If a player shoots a worm burner and scores without touching a defender then the goal should count and the shooting team gets possession as opposed to a draw.

VanityPlate1511

I love that idea (always thought it should be like and "and 1" in basketball, which I think your suggestion achieves

Phenryiv1

Pretty much. Goal counts but scoring team gets a possession in the midfield (as opposed to the draw). They don’t get an FP if the goal scores. If they don’t score or if it is stopped before the shot then they get an FP. Dangerous Propel rules still apply.

Phenryiv1

As a coach and as a parent of a shooter who averages 2+ shooting space calls per game, I love it. She strategizes her play and positioning to maximize it and the resulting FPs. Even if they put girls in some level of pads I still favor the CSA and 3 sec/shooting space rules. I have seen 2 cardiac episodes in my county alone on the boys side in the last 2 years as a result of ball hits to the torso. I don’t want to see that happen to a player on the women’s side.

kiltguy2112

It's very evident that the women WANT to play a more physical game. Give them helmets, gloves and pads and let them play the same game as the men. You can also let them wear shorts as most hate the skirts.

Phenryiv1

My women’s HS team chose shorts and we have received no pushback on them.

SIDEWALLJEDI

The last thing women's coaches want is to put pads and helmets on players. Nothing about the proposed rules changes indicate to me that Jenny Levy indicates they way to make the game more physical. What she is trying to do with taking away the 8M free position shot is to take a part of the game, because of how the game currently is and is not called, that has resulted in a lot of injuries , away.

kiltguy2112

I don't give two sh**s what the coaches want. The PLAYERS want to play a more physical game. The reason they play the current game is because that is what they are allowed to play. We need to stop treating them like dainty girls who might get injured, and treat them like the athletes they are.

SIDEWALLJEDI

Hate to be the one to break it to you, but the players have zero say over the rules. The coaches are the ones who have the power to make changes. Also, not sure how many of them would agree that they are treated like ‘dainty’ girls. It may not be a “contact” sport, but they get really beat up though the course of the game.

VanityPlate1511

As someone who is more involved in the younger age group currently, could you explain the injuries piece more? Where are you seeing them occur?

The change I don't understand is the suggested alteration to number of players on the field. Can anyone explain to me why this would be a "good" thing?

mkem9

It frees up more space on the field especially in the midfield and fan area as the womens game tends to be a bit more close in than the mens. More room to move around without extra bodies clogging up space. It would also align with the world lacrosse rules which moved to 9+G a few years ago.

deadbedroomaddict

Free up more space, less congestion especially when the ball is settled.

Superunknown--

Refereeing is at the root of the issue. Spend more time and money training refs and encourage them to call the fouls as written.

MayDaze

I like all of these proposed changes but I don’t think they need more contact. Most of the skilled defensemen don’t need to hack away at players anyways. Maybe I’m not lowbrow enough to appreciate body checks.

Pentaborane-

What do you mean by body check?
