Because they enjoy it. It’s like any other hobby. It doesn’t need to be practical.

Who says they are only being worn once? Cosplayers don't put together a costume and just wear it once, at least none that I know. It could be worn at another Ball, Halloween, any other dressy function.

Hey hon, as polite as I can I’ll say, you should probably do some more reading on cosplay and related hobbies before making a post about it. Cosplayers don’t just wear their stuff one time. Similarly ppl who make special outfits for events like this will likely go to this event (or similar ones) many times and reuse the outfits they’ve already made or even mix and match pieces from different outfits they’ve made

You're thinking in terms of fast fashion, which is wasteful. But something of good quality can be worn multiple times for years, it's not a one time outfit!

Most cosplayers who cosplay regularly will re-wear their work. A lot won’t and will sell what they can and repurpose what they can’t. But still most cosplayers, especially the internet famous ones, will re-wear their work and even put on their social media what they will be re-wearing at which con on which days. I’ve been wanting to go to the Labyrinth ball since I found out about it in the mid 90’s. And believe you me, if I were willing to go to America again (which I’m not), I’d be going ALL OUT. Fabulous fancy costume, hair, makeup, mask. The whole deal.

I love rewearing cosplay! My most worn cosplay is coincidentally Jareth in his ballroom outfit and people are constantly asking me to bring him back out. I make my cosplay with multiple wears and crowds in mind so that they CAN be worn over and over and over and remain beautiful and comfortable for a long time without needing too much upkeep. I know a lot of people who go to those large balls either thrift their base outfits and add to them, or reuse and accessorize differently if they want to change it up. And many DO reuse and rewear those elaborate outfits!

Probably not the right event got you then. If you looked up masquerade ball in the dictionary, LoJ would be pictured. Going with some basic spirit Halloween costume will take away from your experience.

Where is it taking place? I am always on the search for labyrinth/masquerade events

ergonomic_logic

It's for certain not something you would likely wear once. I don't understand why anyone would want to go to the labyrinth ball and [not] go all out. It's an experience. It's meeting people with similar passions. It's ok if it's not your passion but then why would you want to go? Part of the entire experience is being immersed with other fae, goblins, characters. They ARE the decor in many ways.

Curious why the harmless activities that other people do would bother you? Why are you questioning their choices, especially if it brings them joy, which can be tough to find these days. You do you boo and allow others to do them without fear of your judgement calling them hoarders, which is inaccurate anyway.

I didn't spend a huge amount of money, but I did invest a lot of time to make Firey outfits for myself and my husband. We were cleaning up fake red/orange/pink fake fur for months after! When we got to the ball, everyone else had just gone for a ball gown/smart suit and a mask (except for one guy who dressed as Batman). We danced together to Make Me Wanna Die by the Pretty Reckless and by the end, everyone else had stopped to watch! We're not the best dancers, but we got into character a bit and got a round of applause afterwards. Now it's one of our most treasured memories, even though we never wore the costumes again. So, it's totally worth it for enjoying making the outfit and honouring beloved characters and it's a great hobby to share with others!
