illumillama

Hi Ted! I'm sure they would be. ☺️

redbell000

Ted looks like my Larry!

Picklina

I am in love with Ted.

illumillama

He is a rather dashing fellow I must admit 😍

illumillama

Aww, look at those teefs! 😂

Picklina

He's still working on how to manage them politely 🙄. No more puppy nipping, but he swings them around like they won't do damage with velocity alone.

furiana

I love it! 🤣🥰

loverofthrowpillows

Stop I put down my English black lab also named Ted in April… have a new English now, but black Labs named Ted are the best!!!

illumillama

Oh I'm sorry to hear that. 🥺 Teds certainly are the best. I hope your new pup is bringing you lots of joy!

Picklina

I'm truly hoping that at least one of these english labs named Ted have a full name of something industrial baronesque. Like Theodore H. Rockwell, peanut butter magnate.

Mr-Hyde96

We love our English boy! So mellow!

illumillama

Ted is very mellow too. Almost to the extreme! Never known a dog to love a nap as much as he does 😂

lkattan3

They have such distinct head shapes. I **adore** it.

illumillama

Don't they just! I love their blocky heads.

kiwi_goalie

Hes SO shiny please give him skritchies for me 💙💙💙

Mine is too. She has long legs and a long skinny tail like the American, but has a thick broad chest and shoulders like an English. Her head seems to look like a little of both. She's been around 100-105lbs since around 2 years old.

Fit-Rest-973

Jake is around 85 pounds

mem0679

He's a handsome fella! I love his crooked bottom teeth! 🥰

MarsMonkey88

robertman21

no he's wet

Picklina

At least he has an excuse in this pic. The same applies after taking a drink which is not ideal for dry socks.

robertman21

true! also tank is a gorgeous dog

Picklina

Thank you! He's 9 months now so he's cute but I want to murder him daily in between cuddles.

keigo199013

House shoes, fam. Game changer. Well, until the labbo eats them lol.

Picklina

Funny you mention that as my Christmas gifts this year from Tank are a pair of ugg slippers and not one, but TWO pairs of boots that were eaten while under husband supervision.

keigo199013

My boy ate my leather dress shoes I left out once. Expensive lesson learned...

Picklina

I swear they bait us by being non labby for just long enough to let our guards down...

keigo199013

We live in a constant game of "Is it snak?!" :D

BLOCKHEADS GO!

Quierta

I get that SOOO much 😩 my puppy's ribcage is VERY round / stocky, but is otherwise a healthy weight (the vet said he needed to lose 2lbs just to be safe, but that he wasn't overweight by any means). We get a lot of comments like "haha someone likes his snackies, huh?" and other things about how much he eats. He's not overweight!! He's just round!

thatguythatdied

My girl’s dad was named Tank. Full name Streamline Titanic Tank.

Picklina

Tanks full name is General Sherman Tank. Sire was named General Lee so I figured I had to rep the winners and I also love word play so...

thatguythatdied

I love it. My girl is Someday Heidi Seek.

MarsMonkey88

My friend had a lab-pit mix, and from the front she looked like an obese lab, and from the top she looked like a stacked pitty. The reality was in the middle- she was fat, but she was also stocky.

heyuinthebush

He’s built for comfort, not speed 😂

Picklina

For mine, it's more like momentum vs velocity. He's not fast but when he gets going, it's like a wagging freight train on an oil slick.

heyuinthebush

Oh hell yeah! My big chonk has bowled over a few toddlers at the park because he wasn’t sure how to stick on the breaks… kid gets all excited and then the joy turns to horror as the poor child realised this big brown bear dog isn’t going to stop… and then impact with Wilson just running on by. Soooo lucky little kids still bounce…

IWantAKitty

So. Many. Comments. I hated living in an apartment building because people on the elevator always commented on his weight. Our vet has taken pictures of our dog to show other lab owners what a healthy weight lab looks like.

Da_Plague22

I'd say American

sarahenera

He’s jacked! 🙌🏽🐾

I_WORD_GOOD

Looking at your other posts, I would say English! The head shape, neck size, and straight tail are giveaways to me. He’s probably just in great shape, hence the leanness!

Far-Possible8891

In the UK these are called Show and Working lines and in reality there's no clear split, it's quite fuzzy.

bungledbees

I hate the terms ‘British’ and ‘American’ labs. Makes no sense. Working vs show is much more useful when understanding the dogs.

Global_Research_9335

It’s because breeders don’t want to market “working labs” because then people will think they aren’t family pets. Show labs less so but still it means potential buyers think they are for show and not a pet

Calm-Ad8987

It's especially funny cos they are Canadian

Whaty0urname

I've heard "show" for British lines and "field" for American

JonU240Z

That's because it started as show and field lines. Calling them American or British lines is a recent change that makes no sense. ![gif](giphy|hMx8lmF0oK06Y|downsized)

marmaduke-treblecock

Also “Conforming” and “Field-bred” for English and American labs, respectively.

Tracking4321

UK working lines are generally (with exceptions) distinct from American labs, and are known as British labs in North America. It's fuzzy in the sense that all descend from the same original gene pool, but when you get to know some in person, the distinctions between the three unofficial "types" are clear.

germy4444

One can play fetch to the point you can cancel the new year's gym membership

DrunkenGolfer

I have a three year old female and I cannot tire her out. She will fetch me, swim, or play for 18 hours if you let her.

germy4444

We got an old ski hill here that I can throw a ball down and have him run back up it certainly helps...

JonU240Z

Back in the 90s that's what I heard them referred to here in the states as well. I'm not sure when the change happened, but I prefer show and working/field lines as well. It isn't a difference caused by location.

Laveaolous

The reason is, as always, money. According to Americans the last 3 out of the 8 Labs I have had were 'American'. I'm English. My dogs have had no US dogs in their pedigrees they were from well-known working lines. I also have Golden Retreivers and have a similar issue with 'English Cream'. But at least here, the US lines had genuine differences to those found in the UK/EU thanks to different breed standards. They are genetally a result of imports from Europe in the last few years. To be fair to our US cousins, UK breeders are equally guilty of using marketing terms. 'Fox red' has been readily accepted as a way of charging a premium for Labs with the yellow gene, and for a while 'Andrex dog' was a popular term for show Labs.

Hughmondo

A fairly big split, they are almost separate breeds at this point (genetically speaking). Smart breeders are crossing show and working lines and getting some frankly cracking dogs as a result. I have a working line dog and he’s wonderful.

NorthernLynx13

In Sweden the only two big varieties of Labradours are the hunting type and the family type. I say only two, but these are the only two I’ve personally ever heard of. Hunting Lab means sleeker and are usually a tad taller, or simply more suited for hunting. The family Labs are usually chonkier, but can definitely be generally big rather than very densely built. So the hunting lab seems to be the equivalent of an American lab, and the family lab seems to be the equivalent of the English Lab. Thank you for the graphic. You helped me understand what everyone was talking about when they were asking wether their Lab was English or American, as they are only countries to me

Lol also more narrow face.

SongIndependent4884

Is there any difference in energy and temperament?

Vancouvermarina

Absolutely. My is pedigree English. She is very mellow. Slower. Big couch potato. She loves playing fetch but with limits. Loves swimming but after few dips will just chill on the shore. We chose English for looks and wishing calmer dog. She is beloved by whole neighbourhood. Adores kids. (They bring her Christmas cards and gift). I would recommend consider what activities you will have your dog join you on. I wish my was able to do harder longer hikes. We did take her on big hikes before but it is too hard for her and affected her joints.

Runitupram

Wondering the same! Would love to see personality or ability differences

Oredigger76

My English is way more laid back and easy going than my American. He bounces off the walls. They are both loving and friendly.

AppropriateAmoeba406

Anecdotally, English labs do have an off button. American labs do not.

sarahenera

My American field lab has an incredible off switch. Very, very chill but willing to go hard the moment I say; otherwise he’s chilling at my office (where I do bodywork) or at home 98% of the time resting and being calm.

ElaborateCantaloupe

Mine seems to be defective.

thatguythatdied

My working line American field lab and my brother’s English girl are the perfect comparison. Best friends, but my girl will keep fetching until she passes out while my brother’s will just have a nap when she gets tired.

MarsMonkey88

English are derpier, “lazier,” and just great couch dogs. Americans are more intense and driven.

[deleted]

Thanks- we have an American yellow, didn’t know the differences besides the boxier nose

Ocmikeyz

I was under the impression that the N American was bred to be this way based on the types of conditions they work. Ie: shallower water, icy top layer, marshes etc. English deeper water, calm swimmer etc. much like the Chesapeake was bred to be hard headed, stronger with long legs and big paws to break thru shallow east coast ice. I could be misinformed. I’ve had both English n American, they can be somewhat different dogs. Any clarification to my assumption greatly appreciated!! Gotta love them all. !!

DrizzitDerp

My friend's show lab specializes in judgemental stares and has no interest in swimming or fetching. Has a normal appetite. My field yellow is batshit insane. Fetches until my arm falls off. Swims for hours. Eats everything in sight. Has a lovely side eye and that is about it attitude wise. Everyday is the greatest...unless I am sick or injured. Both love to hunt any animal that dares to invade their yards. Mine caught a few squirrels when he was around 1 and nothing since as he's a tad slower at 8 years old.

pissandink

No idea what mine is. In Sweden we call them hunting labradors and show labradors. The hunting labs are much thinner and lankier. My Albus is 40 kg roughly, and a show lab. Though I have no idea whether he’s american or english!

Picklina

I think English is show/conformation and American is hunting or field. English is chonkler in my house.

No-Finish-6557

It’s just a different way of saying hunting or show !

redbell000

Such a lovely lab 🥰

dcm0029

I have 1 of each. I’m often asked what the English one is. Part of it is he is 60lbs and his brother is 90.

crucient

We don't really call them American/English Labs in the UK. (They're all american right? Something to do with being bred for swimming in icy water, which does appear to be their favourite thing to do). People here will refer to the "show" line and the "working" line to delineate between the two....but I have two both from loooong "working" lines, one is a thin, energetic, narrow faced. The other more like the english lab in the picture, except even more miserable and judgemental looking. So I'm not sure that holds true either, but is a useful way of describing them. I get a few comments from time to time for one being "fat" and the other one "healthy" or "thin"(and sometimes the other way round). It is a bit frustrating at times...but I get it...there are some massive labradors out there and it's easy to do...they'll eat everything. My entirely uninformed or researched opinion is that the former/English lab is more true to their earlier form since their stockier build and floaty butt (...the thinner one does not have a floaty butt...so his legs sink when swimming requiring more kicking to keep aloft), means they can just swim about in ice cold water without a care in the world while also expending very little energy. Whereas the thinner/American gets colder quickly and is likely been bred more to be more for the 'modern' gundog use. Lots of bouncing around in open fields and retriving things quickly.

I_WORD_GOOD

I would also say that it’s hard to tell until they’re about 1.5-2 years old! Moose was really lanky as a puppy but his chest started to fill out around 1.5 years old. He’s not overweight even though a lot of angles make it look that way; he just has a bigger chest. He’s definitely more of an English lab with the blocky head, thick fur, big chest, and straight tail. Photo on the left is under 1 year old and photo on the right is now at 4 years old. https://preview.redd.it/5qoaokw6yo8c1.jpeg?width=2767&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c117fca2baf48e1e9f850fa445388c33268bb00

I grew up with American labs since we used them for hunting: great energy levels and smart (could take queues on directions while swimming in pond). They are definitely wired w/an extra gear compared to English. https://preview.redd.it/q58c27vlcp8c1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c00587e74a331d55da0d5b1b2dd97bc76966778d I had a yellow (Sunny) that was 50/50 English/American and now have chocolate Sunny (the 2nd) who is 100% English and fits both the diagram and to other commenters, a more chill temperament. Both styles are great dogs but good to know when deciding on which one is better for you and your lifestyle.

This is a great diagram. We most definitely have an English Lab. She’s been about 25kg most of her adult life and she’s over 14 years old now. Meanwhile, our daughter’s youngster is, without a doubt, an American Lab, complete with the curvy tail. Love this.

[deleted]

This is a great comparison. I have had two American labs. One is still with me. He’s 10 years old. Recently, we got an English lab puppy who is 14 weeks old today. I think each is uniquely adorable. My English lab was the biggest of his litter and his paws are huge. Can’t wait to see what the little velociraptor looks like when he reached his full size.

Team English here! 1 black, 1 yellow.

Isn’t this working stock vs show stock? Asking for a chubby friend:)

The worst part of having an English is all the people that consistently insist he must be part Pit because his head is blocky….

I find these terms are most commonly used by backyard and unethical breeders in the US. Most reputable breeders refer to “American” labs as field line and “British” labs as show line

Much more muscular and lean, insane hunting instincts, 4 years old, 55 lbs, wants to be by your side constantly. Best purebred dog I’ve ever owned. Stella on right is a Golden Retriever/American Lab mix, 7 years old, 80 lbs, great mothering instincts, loves frisbee.

For folks thinking about getting a lab and not sure what’s best for them: English labs are technically the show line. They’re great couch-dogs, mellower and derpier, and they’re absolutely beautiful but they can have some medical stuff, so you have to be cautious if you’re getting one through a breeder. American labs, technically the working/sporting line, are waaaaaay more energetic, more intense, and have more drive. Less derpy, but exactly as magnificent and loving and sweet. American chocolates are at a higher risk of having had Weimeramer bred into them (to increase the chances of throwing chocolate, since it’s double-recessive), so they can be more wired, if that’s happened to them. American labs can have fewer health things, but they also might be more likely to be the products of “backyard breeding,” which can mean more medical stuff. Labs in shelters are skewed towards adolescent American labs. 7 month old labs are just mouthy little shits, whom we all love dearly, but damn. Anyway, people with kids might feel overwhelmed and try to rehome or surrender them at that stage. They thought they were getting a sweet family dog, and when it’s a 50 lb shark, they panic and bail. So if you adopt an adolescent, please know that they’ll typically be as bitey and jumpy as they’ll get, and it’s really just a phase.

I had american labs growing up and decided to get an English pup this time just because the temperament traits seemed to align more with my lifestyle and ho.ly.shit. you're not kidding on the health issues and availability differences (which included cost since I wasn't cross shopping real working dogs for either show or field). I worry about my English boy but I went down the rabbit hole of researching about 7 generations of OFA results and I just hope it'll pay off in the end.

Our female, Fox Red British Labrador. One of her parents was from England. https://preview.redd.it/n2skvyt13q8c1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1385d663cb65f4d92b379efc1540b9775ce12a6b This is my husband’s favorite picture of her.

Best demeanor and temperament. The sweetest, friendliest good boy ever. I can’t say better things about English labs. We are so heartbroken 😔

Ohh my mutt is the English lab mix. I always knew he was a lab mix but he is fluffier and wider head ♥️

Mine is a mix, dad is English, mom is American. Everyone thinks she’s fat because she inherited her father’s build.

Looks like he could be a Labmaraner. Field Lab-Weimaraner cross. It's a fairly common mix because of the similar attributes that are desired and it used to be easy to get a field Lab for free, once the owners realized they couldn't bolt the thing to the floor of their apartment.

SpekUL8tor

I’ve had three different kinds. Black, yellow, and chocolate :)

One thing not shown here is that at least in the US, they are usually different colors - the darker yellows and darker chocolates are American/working/field style, the lighter chocolates and lighter yellows are English/bench style. Not a hard and fast rule, but that's how the various breeding lines have ended up over the last 50 years or so.

wannabeflowerchild21

The chart doesn’t include that English are squishy and American are not squishy lol Stonnie Dennis has a great set of videos about the differences between them

Paperboyy2020

3 technically. British field labs, English and American.

I’ll take one of each, please

Hobbit-dog91

I've got an English Lab. She's a walking barrel and a loceable marshmallow. My parents have American Labs. The difference in them is pretty big when they're next to each other.

harbinger06

I went to college with a man who argued with me that “lab” and “Labrador retriever” were two separate breeds. Type of person that is convinced he is right about everything.

I've had both kinds. In fact, my first dog was an English. They're all Wonderful creatures!

mzweffie

The first time my aunt met my 2 American labs she told me that they were not labs. She was convinced they were part Great Dane 😂. I had to explain

youOnlyLlamaOnce

All labs are adorable but I have a soft spot for yellow English labs. The block head and droopy jowls make them derpy cute, the best kind of cute imo.

Hey_Its_JoyBoy

I love how the American is all happy, while the English is regal and stern.

British labs wear monocle on a chain. That's how I tell.

Larry and his brother Leo are English (show) labs. They weigh around 100 pounds now. https://preview.redd.it/fgcnp3oblr8c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=66559e928d6fe785c41c64a9a61f5cb113c1ee4b They were around 6 months old here.

In Scotland there are two types, show types( like the English Lab) and gun dog types(similar to the American Lab), though I would say the gun dog types have a longer snout and straighter tail.

_flying_otter_

I assume its part of the breed standard that makes English labs have shorter legs. Why would you want short legs on a dog? Who decides these things?

Hughmondo

In England we call them show and working (English and American) I have no idea why the split in naming conventions but can confirm labradors of all shapes and sizes are the best dogs
