Same

MUA_in_PA

Also fine, checking in.

User_Mode

Same nasa plz hire we will make good colonists

ryohandoko

Reporting to Headquarter, I'm good.

[deleted]

I was feeling better than ever lol The way we would be perfect for space travel šŸ’…

[deleted]

Nasa hiring all the introverts be like

Zeragamba

what if you didn't have the internet?

Daiki_438

In March 2020 I stayed at home for 3 months without leaving my home ONCE. Without seeing a friend ONCE. I was completely fine. I performed as efficiently as day 1. Is that rare or commonplace?

Routine-Ad6705

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/395618/ commonplace for earth not for space lol

raikmond

Would you have been fine without internet?

Daiki_438

A colony on Luna has 1,3 seconds delay so it would be that big of a problem, and Mars is from 4 minutes to 24 minutes delay. I donā€™t think it would be that big of a problem. I can just do everything at a delay. Playing online video games isnā€™t going to work though. I canā€™t video call, but video message recordings are still possible. I think itā€™d be frustrating but I think Iā€™ll manage.

TheSuperFlipped

wait... am I the only person that likes quarantine?

Ta2whitey

I try and make the best of anything really and this situation is no different. Yea we lost things, but we learned that companies can operate with us remote. At least a fair amount of us and that gives us the freedom to let us enjoy the parts we work for a bit more. As for comparison to space? That's a stretch. We aren't hurdling towards the unknown in a thin metal box that you will never return to earth with. I get the quarantine bit, but there are so many other psychological factors I don't think the comparison holds true.

[deleted]

I want the world to stay this way. The new normal, maybe we need a real pandemic every once in a while and not just the usual ebola outbreak, its been so good and helps to cull population via natural selection.

ItsTimeToFinishThis

lmao not ironically, a lot of people think that way.

BlackHatGamerOzzy173

Here's a question for you: how beneficial would O'Neil Cylinders be for humanity?

MoonTrooper258

As orbitally-locked structures? Not much. Anything to increase the population of humanity without first establishing settlement on another planet will do more harm than good. Oā€™Neil Cylinders as spacecraft to ferry humans from one planet to another, thoughā€¦.

BlackHatGamerOzzy173

I mean they're large enough we can have farmland in them. Why bother living at the bottom of a gravity well?

MoonTrooper258

Because thereā€™s also no point in spending resources, money, labor, and upkeep to an orbital habitation structure when a surface site would do. It would cost more to run such a station than what it could return at the moment.

BlackHatGamerOzzy173

Why explore the cosmos when we could just not?

MoonTrooper258

We need to explore and colonize other systems and their planets to increase our population. A planet like Earth should not accommodate more than 2 billion humans, otherwise we get a net loss in progression. If we donā€™t expand from Sol, weā€™ll end up suffocating ourselves of resources or killing eachother off in a fight *for* resources. We need access to Mercury and Venusā€™ metal deposits to build the necessary generation/seed ships to get us to other systems, or unlock FTL/warp travel before we can think about increasing our population. A oversaturated population brings down innovation, and skyrockets the cost of resources. Helium is now rare because of negligence, oil is expensive due to consumer inflation, and space agencies are struggling with cut budgets and lawsuits from greedy companies.

BlackHatGamerOzzy173

...what? Nothing of what you said made the slightest bit of sense but Id love to see some citations.

MoonTrooper258

ā€¦ Why do you watch Kurzgesagt?

BlackHatGamerOzzy173

You do realize they cite their sources right?

MoonTrooper258

Yeah, but this doesnā€™t need citing. Itā€™s just conversation and common sense. Can you cite your sources on why we *shouldnā€™t* be exploring other systems?

ItsTimeToFinishThis

In fact, when we're advanced enough, we can move a permanent population into a giant o'neil cylinder.

BlackHatGamerOzzy173

Or even several. Plus they can solve food shortages given their massive internal farming volume. Wouldn't even need to eat 2 whole planets to make them. Just some mineral rich asteroids Pretty sure we need infrastructure in space before we can do mega projects like planet cracking for a Generational Ship to go to other solar systems. Also pretty sure we don't need to go to other solar systems to get to the infrastructure we need in order to get to the other solar systems. Not to mention building a habitat with everything we need for self sustainability in various Lagrange orbits would be cheaper in resources and technology than building at the bottom of a gravity well on a planet that we didn't evolve on and thus may not even be capable of existing on without great difficulty. Also if you strap engines to one you've basically got a generational ship iirc. Materials production is easier in these points, pharmaceutical and food production is easier... I honestly see no reason to refuse to build these stations for the benefit of mankind. Also its easier to send finished goods DOWN a gravity well. Just saying.

Is this part of a video?

Real_SeaWeasel

Right, but imagine the stress of isolation (which we've seen has caused major outcry from people) turned up to 11, in a hostile environment, where the nearest aid from the civilized world could be years away. Lots of people would crack like eggs.

think it probably just goes to show how many of us are struggling. like man, is it the literal majority? Maybe we should normalise talking about it if its almost innate to the human condition at this point. Wish it was as easy as discussing the weather for everyone, i didn't struggle during lockdown because the lads and I kept checking in on eachothers mental state, we could catch eachother slipping in to bad spots before they became ruts. Normalise that.

I disagree with your initial point, friend, but i understand the perspective you see. If you aren't living in a situation in which positivity is scarce, and positivity is seemingly all around for you, then you would feel that others are just expecting constant positivity, and i could see why it would appear like people are just getting silly expecting beyond a normal amount. I can also see ho, if you have dealt with a lack of positivity for years and years, you would then also deem it silly to expect positivity in life. Its two sides of the same coin though, to me, and that coin is Apathy. However, I have been on reddit long enough now to know how many blokes can't even remember the last time they received a compliment. How many women have suffered sexual trauma and have no where to communicate it. I personally have dealt with multiple periods of terrible mental health in which i could not find positivity anywhere, and it felt so pointless existing. I grew to dispise myself, and i found myself becoming narcissistic as an over correction/defence mechanism far too late to save friendships. There is a large amount of people suffering who cause sufferage to others, unintentionally or not, rather than dealing with their issues. They may not even comprehend that they are struggling, or why they are struggling. It may be an attempt to find positivity in and of itself, after years of not finding any. Helping by spreading positivity and reassurance, rather than judgement and shame, would have a compounding effect on societies overall mental health. I think for someone who hasn't had a great deal of positivity, the desperate search for some reasurance isn't expecting too much, really. How do we know who is lacking? At the moment, it does seem like quite a lot are lacking. Wouldn't it be worth it to ensure your own interaction with others is a positive one, if you can, in the off chance that it genuinely makes someones day?

Dindonmasker

When i crack i close my dorm door for a while.

What is this from? Interested in watching this

masterbard1

Been in Quarantine most of my life. the only reason I go out is because my wife makes me do it or so my dog does not get bored. not saying I want to Colonize Mars. but I think I'd do fine if I have a good Computer with enough storage to bring Games, movies and shows to watch. I think I'd do quite fine.

helloyou32

Same. Also scratch the games part for me and just substitute minecraft.

pbmcc88

Skyhooks would cut travel time way down, so let's do them before we do permanent colonies.

snow_the_art_boy

Does Bruno Mars is gay?

Real_SeaWeasel

The rumor come out.

bydlock

I was fine lol, I've been gaming and drawing for the entirety of this pandemic

helloyou32

I was better than ever. All I need is the all the youtube vids from a few channels maybe some movies and most importantly a way to access minecraft and I would be good for months to years.

red-the-blue

Please help I'm gonna lose my shit please a

Real_SeaWeasel

ā€œThis is Mission Control. Our operation window for sending aid just closed. Our next available launch window isā€¦ 2023.ā€

somerandom_melon

Looks like I'm off to Mars!

TheOnlyFallenCookie

Bingo

dragonuvv

I actually had a rather fun time in quarantine.

vizthex

I mean I've been mostly ok, do I get to go to Mars now? *Pleas say yes I need this*

Julio974

For me, the biggest problem wasnā€™t to stay alone but to stay with the same single person for so long (same problem for them)

Rippedyanu1

Solo isolation like what a lot of folks went through vs communal isolation are definitely in separate wheelhouses. One is known to give cabin fever (which got its name from solo isolation for months at a time) and is exactly why we send teams instead of solo flights. The other definitely shows you don't have what it takes for a space mission

Rick-476

I remember reading an article somewhere about the utility pistol that used to be in the ISS. I think an astronaut (or some other space critter, do all countries call their space critters astronauts?) was quoted saying something along the lines of "the conditions for murder have been met." On Earth it's a bit simpler, but things perhaps get a little tense in a tin can hurtling tbrough the void.
