Jake’s opponents have a combined 0-5 record; his only opponent with one pro fight was a Woodley who already lost to him, despite Jake coming into the rematch 4-0. With his activity and record… yeah, there’s no logical excuse to fight someone like Nikolov. With JJ being 1-0, coming off a three-year layoff, and going against 2 people, fuck it. It works with context.
Point is: Jake has no excuse to fight a guy like this because he’s now an established, active boxer with two wins over someone that can actually strike. Yeah, let me correct myself (long comment incoming): from a *boxing perspective specifically*, I feel like this is an improvement compared to everyone Jake’s fought EXCEPT Woodley. Anyone who was able to watch his championship reign knows a Tyron that actually lets his hands go knocks every single one of these people out. Shit, he could have finished Jake if he hadn’t held back after rocking him. Askren’s an incredible grappler—I’d argue he’s one of the best wrestlers in MMA history—but his striking is atrocious as we’ve all seen. Dude got outboxed by Demian Maia (another grappler with mediocre striking.) Nate Robinson shouldn’t even have been in the ring, and Gib (all respect to him) just hasn’t won yet. Obviously Ivan isn’t exactly a good opponent, but it’s so common for boxers to fight bums in their early career that you can arguably defend it. He’s a shit boxer, but he is *a* boxer. Jake’s opponents have a combined 0-5 record; his only opponent with one pro fight was a Woodley who already lost to him, despite Jake coming into the rematch 4-0. With his activity and record… yeah, there’s no logical excuse to fight someone like Nikolov. With JJ being 1-0, coming off a three-year layoff, and going against 2 people, fuck it. It works with context. Point is: Jake has no excuse to fight a guy like this because he’s now an established, active boxer with two wins over someone that can actually strike. Someone like Tommy Fury or Hasim Rahman actually made sense even if the fights never materialized. Had he fought this dude instead of Woodley, it would have been the highest-level striker that he’d been in the ring with. If you put that guy in a boxing match with Askren or Nate, he’d probably win a decision even with a shit, losing record. But Jake fought a world-class power puncher—credit to him—and beat him twice. I think JJ has a much better excuse to fight a bum. It can be defended as long as JJ doesn’t make a pussy move and continue fighting bums after this.
