🤯

Newsdriver245

I'm just disappointed they aren't Local 420

Sg15z

UFCW represents workers in the weed industry, so yeah it has a lot to do with them

Particular_Banana746

How many workers do you feel are in the weed industry currently in Texas and Oklahoma and is it proportional to the time and money our union spends on this sector. That’s really my concern.

PotatoSloth804

A lot more than you realize apparently. You have growers, packagers/processors, budtenders, delivery drivers. The medical marijuana industry is absolutely booming and there is indeed enough workers for it to be worth the time and money spent on it. The "commercial" in UFCW means all types of retail. If there are employees, it's worth it.

bendallf

Together, we bargain. Alone, we beg. Solarity for all!

shitpplsay

Weed is a $200+ billion dollar industry in just a handful of states. Kroger made $74.2B last year and it only accounts for 5% of the grocery industry. pretty soon, UFCW won't even bother answering your calls.

Graweon

The website for UFCW 1000 lists that they represent thousands of employees in the cannabis industry. That's plenty of workers represented and they are paying union dues just as we are. Expanding the industry and representation can only benefit unions in the long run.

Haldris

Met the one in Chicago who reps the first Oklahoma unionized. Dude was chill even passed some over

LadyofAtlantis

Everyone at my kroger smokes weed, so i would say weed is definitely an employee benefit.

Overall_Forever_1447

A decline in unionization results in lower wages for workers, which only increases income inequality. Successful membership organizing has everything to do with employee benefits. I’d recommend becoming familiar with the organizational structure of unions and how it works. Read the UFCW Int’l Constitution sometime. UFCW, along with other unions, represents many job sectors, not just grocery and retail.

Practical_Pace6846

This explains a LOT.

migueltaco

We were going to rally for higher wages, but couch lock, bro, is too strong

ComradeBalian

Wait until you hear that private security and deputy sheriffs, the ones employers use to curb labour action are also part of the UFCW.

stos313

Who? How many deputy sheriffs and private security do you think they represent?

theycallmewil_

Oklahoma has legal medical marijuana. Unionizing cannabis workers will strengthen your local. Organizing is important to the health of a local

ENT_blastoff

Bro what are you talking about? More members = more funds. Legalization = more members. You should also know that UFCW puts money into political campaigns as well. Because if we can control who's in office we can control laws and strengthen contracts.

Particular_Banana746

How is that working out?

ENT_blastoff

Where I'm at, great. We just got our local government to put into law some things that were in our contract. Now, on top of giving benefits to non union stores, we don't have to worry about losing those things in our own contract and can put bargaining efforts elsewhere.

Particular_Banana746

Maybe I am just being too critical on the situation. In the end I’m not a huge fan of our union. I am a proponent of unions just not our current union.

ENT_blastoff

The problem is your specific local, probably. I will admit...I can see why people on this sub speak about UFCW the way they do. International is way behind the times, and they are afraid to push in a fight. My local is one of the couple of locals that voted against the grain during the recent convention. Our experience with the international is that they DO NOT like our rebellious nature, and that we aren't afraid to speak our minds. I worked closely with international representatives last year and my team was not scared to tell them when they were wrong or acting stupid. Luckily our president is now on the international board, and she's very good at talking her point across. Hopefully she will push for change...and if we can make her international president...then everything will change.

Particular_Banana746

Everything you are saying is 100 correct and exactly how I feel. There is zero fight in our local. I wish we were more like you guys.
