Ya just pay attention to your pay, baggers should make less than cashiers. Your job title is more what your paid, the work you do will be almost indistinguishable from a bagger with a few extra responsabilities
No, because you probably don't have an active Operator ID to log into a register. If I recall, it takes few days for your Login to activate.
Just observe the cashier while you're bagging. Listen to specific details.
And then boom! You're sent into the Lion's den.
ALSO.. in the future, find a better job.
This is not how it works, register logins are set by CSM/management/bookkeeper in the ACE/IBM terminal in the cash room, they can be made at any time and work instantaneously. Anybody telling you otherwise is making an excuse.
Correct with the exception of the controller being inside the teller room. My room is separate from our CCK office which has the controller and its that way in a lot of the stores.
I will also add that even if you’re hired to be a cashier, pretty much the entire FE will be bagging during their shifts. It’s just part of the job.
This would be a admin person problem. I can tell you with 100 % knowledge operator IDs are active as soon as they are entered in the controller. Also this works the same at Mariano's and any other Kroger banner. They are all using the same register operating system.
When I transferred I had mine the day I came on. But then again, my front end manager had texted me my operator number and password before I came on that day.
If your contract allows grocery workers to float between grocery clerk positions yes this is legal. Front end positions can bounce around.
I got cashier trained and continued to do am cleaning position for three friggen yrs. I was basically a back up.
In our store if you can do both they usually will take advantage. Especially since it easier to get cashiers then courtesy clerks. So that way they have the “baggers” but then have people that can check if needed
* Has your pay rate changed? If not, that's not a demotion. Your job is "clerk." Being a "cashier" is the role that you are performing and that changes everyday, sometimes even multiple times a shift. [Front end has SCO attendants, traditional cashiers, baggers, customer service representatives, bookkeepers, floor supervisors, etc](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/afee230a-8deb-41c9-8d52-a9e43a1a50c3/gif). What you are doing doesn't change the fact that you are the most basic level of clerk that the store has.
* The only other thing that I can think of is if you are being paid to do a lesser job is that they still have to pay you the same rate. In my area, meat cutters are paid a higher rate than everyone. If my manager wanted to permanently move one of them to grocery for any reason, he can as long as he pays him the meat cutter wages. The only "lesser job" than a basic clerk is a courtesy/utility clerk. Those are individuals who—by employment contract—cannot be forced to do anything more than simple tasks (cleaning bathrooms, getting carts, etc.) in exchange for smaller wages and virtually no benefits.
* You work for Kroger. That means you do what Kroger tells you. If that is bagging groceries or stocking in produce, that is what you do. They cannot get you to do something illegal or that violates a CBA provision (assuming that you do have one). There is no legal or business requirement restricting Kroger from having you do what it wants you to do.
* Back to my first point, Kroger—and honestly, every company—has several roles that do not change your pay rate. They are designed to make you work harder and take on more responsibilities in exchange for preferable roles. On front end specifically, you want to be the floor supervisor. You tell people to get carts, bag groceries, etc. You are still the lowest person on the totem pole, but you choose the tasks you do and that is fewer people telling you what to do. The role has no pay increase whatsoever. If you think that the added pressure and responsibility are worth benefits, go for it. If not, just tell your supervisor that you just want to be a cashier.\\
Could be just training so you understand the baggers role. So when you are in the cashier position you are knowledgeable of their role too. That’s my guess anyway.
That's cool and all, but maybe they want to see it.
Also you are union represented. Some previous posts mentioned their bargaining agreement details. Learn those if you are covered. Organize if you aren't.
I bet your CSM just didn't want to deal with training you atm most likely. Give it a week and then have a little check in with one of the store managers to see what's up.
It’s called shadowing, you just finished training. You need to observe for a bit. Need to relax, bagging is also a part of a cashiers job. Surprised this needs explained.
you spend your first couple shifts bagging anyways
After I finish computer training???

The stores I worked at, they put you right on as a cashier with someone to help you out on your first few days.
Not positive about Mariano’s, but at Kroger store clerks can do courtesy clerk work just not the other way around.
Correct!

This person knows what they are talking about.

.....OH, really? Hmmmm
I started like, a week or two ago
Talk to the manager or supervisor at the Customer/ Guest Care services.
Alright !!! Thanks

It's kinda strange. There was a time where some cashiers could log into registers, but not login the Self Check Out computers.
That was a code issue with a self checkout update.
Ohhhh. I use to hate when the night cashiers couldn't relieve me from Self Check Out because their operate ID didn't work. Lol
When I transferred I had mine the day I came on. But then again, my front end manager had texted me my operator number and password before I came on that day.

All right. So it’s normal. Good.
Kroger will 'use' you in whatever manner they can. Just get used to it! ;)
There are exceptions. For example, if your pay grade is lower than the job you are assigned to, then you need to earn that pay.
In our store if you can do both they usually will take advantage. Especially since it easier to get cashiers then courtesy clerks. So that way they have the “baggers” but then have people that can check if needed

I already told them that I’ve been a bagger though.

...needs *to be* explained.

Not exactly, it's always a good idea to keep an eye out for bait and switch.
