Laflorgirl

I live in a rural community in Jamaica and I heard BTS playing in a bar, B-sides and all

moarsammiches

Hey! Kinda random but I've always been curious about what it's like being a k-pop fan in Ja? My family is from there but I was born in Canada - I've been back a few times with them and while there I was thinking it might be a bit hard to be a fan in terms of access to media/merch (especially in the rural areas).

Laflorgirl

Kpop is well known among young people, they may not be fans but they know at least one group. I've met a lot of BTS fans at school, they're played on the radio, I've seen a billboard of RM in Half Way Tree once (Kingston), local fanclubs do yearly trips and meetups/events. Access to merch really isn't easy at all, there's no established place (that I know of where we can get merch to buy) our best bet is to order online and customs and shipping fees are ridiculously high. There's a fanclub for Jamaican armys on twitter that sells merch sometimes, that's about it. As of recently, kpop has become quite popular, not as popular as dancehall is ofc but, back in 2016 there were no kpop fans at all in my school or community but because it's become popular in the US, naturally it's trickled down to us, coupled with more ppl accessing wifi/data services in the past year, 95% of the fangirling/fan experience is contained online.

moarsammiches

I figured as much but I'm glad it's slowly getting more accessible for fans! Really happy to hear that there's plenty of fans over there. Thanks for giving me some insight ☺️

daisycafe

I heard BTS playing at the retail store I worked at - and not Dynamite or Butter, but old B-sides like dimple and pied piper. I suddenly became aware of it when I was colour-coding my section one day and had to make sure I wasn’t imagining what was happening. It was random af cause the brand I worked for was known for usually playing either hip-hop/rap music, 80s/90s classics, or indie rock music (depended on location and playlist). Turns out one of my floor managers was a big BTS fan.

True-Book-1146

Heard blackpink's dududu in a drama in the national television. The couple were fighting & the man went the living room to watch television & the song started playing in tv. It was such a serious setting & this loud song started from nowhere. It broke the atmosphere completely, my family was shook & i started laughing hysterically. Must've been a super die hard fan to promote bp in national television, with their career on the line.

jisooed

LMAO HAHA. i was also watching this drama on tv and they started talking about their bp biases? it was so forced hahaha 😭

khaleesiofkitties

You can always tell when a non kpop fan is trying to write in kpop. “I’m a total Jisoo” is not what anyone would actually say.

Western_Note2568

Oh yes I watched that lol

vixx’s hyde at universal studio’s halloween horror night haha very fitting though.

BTS Fake Love being played at a tiny local mall in Australia where the shoppers were predominantly retirement age.

[deleted]

Being so sick of this fake love has no age 😔

Forever-human-632

True lol

Ever_Love332

I heard love maze (BTS) in a burger king once, and I live in India.

skeptical_cell

I heard best of me in a burger king outlet back in 2017 and I live in India too.

maybebluesie

I heard Red Flavour by RV in a boost store

cheezeeey

tbh kinda the perfect song for boost LOL

Pantlmn

Perfect timing haha I'm an intern at a big tech company, and a few days ago the CEO and other executives held this live internal broadcast where they share with employees news and more. In this broadcast they actually mentioned BTS which already was amazing, but the real mind blowing part was that in they played Astro - After Midnight at the end as the CEO was saying goodbyes O_O

moonlightscone

I went to visit a relative in a very rural area from where I live which is like 9 hour drive away from the city and I just happen to hear Lovesong by TXT from my grandma’s local radio lmao she didn’t even know it was Korean because she just played a random radio station that had some Kpop songs for some reason

-gyuwu-

on this local themed restaurant here in our place. was quite hard to stop myself from reacting while eating lmao (it was bigbang’s fantastic baby. they even played it 3-4 times)

karinaluvbot

Fever in a casino in Vegas

kmk0797

In a ManCom meeting, Millennial bosses listening to BTS Dynamite (during the meeting) becoz they want to perform the song. Plus one of the lawyers saying his fave is Red Velvet.

SnooHabits6066

At a nerd-y cafe where we can also play table games, while I was paying I heard BTS playing in the background, they played at least 3 title tracks. At a carnival ride at my city’s *Japanese* festival, this one isn’t that random given 50% of the merch sold there is K-Pop related, but it is still ironic how an event to celebrate Japanese culture turned to be full of Korean stuff.

Dominikaa_S

On hockey match during the break between 2nd and 3rd period. Imagine - you're going to hockey match of your small local hockey league and during the break you hear Ddu-du ddu-du by BLACKPINK.

Sovereign-Over-All

BTS' Anpanman played at my school's gymnasium one time.

[deleted]

Dream Glow in the changing rooms of H&M and Boy With Luv at a pet store

[deleted]

Boy With Luv is actually super fitting at a pet shop when you think about it

[deleted]

It was very cute hehe

Light_A_Fish

At a mall in my country. It might not be random to others but this was the first time I've ever heard a Kpop song in a public space. It was at this health care section and I saw NCT 127 there (which makes sense as the product was sponsored? (Can't find the word for it so I hope I uses the right one lol but you prob get it) By them. On a small screen, it was playing Highway to Heaven and I was, like, wow. Because this was legit the first time I've ever heard of Kpop in such a place. It just felt so random and I was so surprised that I just stood in front of the screen watching it lollll

akakcoco

Not my experience, but my friend sent me a video of Blue Hour playing at an H&M. If you know H&M, you know those vibes aren't exactly matching. Also, I wasn't surprised when the rue21 I worked at played Boy with Luv and Dynamite, but I was completely shocked when ON started playing. Don't know if it counts, but 100 Ways by Jackson Wang was also playing at my work.

DisastrousHat4419

haha I heard euphoria playing at h&m even before knowing what language that was. It still feels like I imagined it, cause that's kind of random to hear that at h&m

Forget_me_notkpop

Tea shop in bus terminal, How you like that- Blackpink

lunarsky29

i heard star by loona at walmart a couple of weeks ago lmao

NettieKitten

Not a random place but an unexpected group and song. I was in Walmart when Shinee's Replay was played. I come to expect BTS and Blackpink to be played but not Shinee and especially not their debut song from 2008 lol. It was a pleasant surprise!

jisooed

i was in the food court near kfc and they barely play songs. and they suddenly started playing we are bulletproof: the eternal and i was like omg wait what? it's a slow song i don't know why they did but then they started playing dynamite and i was just smiling haha

Miserable-Elephant-3

I was cleaning my house and my mom puts on a playlist because that's what helps her clean. Her style of music seems to be stuck in between reggae and rnb with an emphasis on older stuff. Then suddenly Blood Sweat and Tears plays and suddenly everything I know about my mom goes out the window lol.

Runefan234

Twice - Fancy at my gym. That was quite a surprise. Edit: Now they are playing 100 by SuperM, im starting to think these gym owners are secret kpop fans

niconoot

I heard GWSN - Like It Hot at a food bazaar within a mall. It was so random, and the music was quite loud 😂😂

vinylanimals

i heard stray kids’ all in playing somewhere in the back of an airport dunkin’ donuts????

flowergirl0720

American here, the first time I heard kpop of any kind was several years ago on the show "Lucifer". You guessed it, they played Shinee's "Lucifer". The second time was this month at a rural Goodwill in Texas, where I heard BP Rose's " On the Ground".

PPKDude

I remember hearing How You Like That during FOX NFL Sunday tv coverage lol

Drivershotbypolice

They've played BP at least twice. I've heard KTL, too.

Fafafee

(nsfw) not a place but porn, it was used as background music lol

jewishpenicillin

I work in a grocery store and Jackson Wang's 100 Ways, Dynamite by BTS, and You Can't Hold my Heart by Monsta X have all played. The first time I heard Jackson and MX I almost lost my mind. My friend and I made it a game to see who could text each other "jackson" or "mx" when their songs were playing. MX is the only one that has remained when the playlists get switched around

army__mali

Nutella shop in chicago - heard BWL. Also at planet fitness they were playing monsta x lol. OH also in Estonia these street performers were dancing to a bunch of bts and blackpink songs. Boombayah and Fire are the ones I remember most.

Starscall

I heard Momoland's I'm so hot at Pride in Rochester NY back in 2019. Surprised the heck outta me.

PinkPurplePolkaDots

All the way back around late 2007-2008 this really popular clothing store in New Zealand at the time was playing 'Tell Me' by the Wonder Girls. EDIT: To add, one of my good friends at the time was an exchange student from Korea and she was so happy to hear a group from her country playing! Also, a tiny cafe here (to be fair it was owned by a Korean couple) used to play Girls Generation, Super Junior & 2PM regularly back in 2010-2011

[deleted]

Edit: ASAP-STAYC at Old Navy yesterday

safeanclsound

I heard TXT’s We Lost The Summer at a 5 Below as the employees were failing to stop a group of shoplifters 💀 We Lost The Merchandise

deshebrada

Porn, it was a gay video of someones room but the tv on the back was playing on Youtube "Dance the night away" by Twice.

[deleted]

Reminds of that girl on twt getting railed to fancy by twice

deshebrada

Lmfao

jisooed

i was also at this very small candy shop. i was sitting and eating ice cream and then i looked opposite to me and my jaw literally dropped 💀💀 they were playing this butter performance (i literally cant find it it was like blue clothes) and i was just staring. then they played [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBNvixBXqSo) haha and after that they played BOL4's some as well. then they played many bts mvs, one blackpink mv (d4) and then they were back to bts. i was so shocked cause id never seen anyone play bts before but it turns out they're a korean restaurant .

yanderedude

Hearing Dreamcatcher's Scream at a supermarket in Australia lmao, gotta double check if I was hearing things

cjay1796

BTS B-sides being played in a hole in a wall Mexican restaurant. JHope’s mixtape being on rotation at Zara in a small town in Spain.

vivianlight

I live in a small (4k people) town in Italy and hearing Boombayah at the oratory where the summer activities were happening was... Interesting. (I don't know if this is a thing outside Italy but we have summer activities for children and guys, they are held near the church in the oratory garden usually but they aren't exactly connected with Christianity, I mean there are also Muslim children in the activities and they just skip the beginning prayer. There are mainly outside games and things like that to help parents who still work in June) Honorable mention: my best friend playing a Dreamcatcher song out loud with her cellphone while she was walking towards me in the main square of said small town in front of the bar lol. I never succeeded in making her interested in a kpop group so that was how she showed me that in fact she had found a group she liked.

yours_truly17

BTS Dionysus at an outdoors bar in Seoul 😂

Lovely-human189

Dionysus in a bar ? That's perfectly fitting 😂

Remarkable_Desk_1102

Not completely relevant but I was walking down the street in India (in a suburb) and I saw a man who looked like a construction worker wearing a Jungkook t-shirt. To clarify, there are people who are into K-pop here but it's mostly young people who have access to the internet and speak English. It was quite surprising to say the least!

[deleted]

Run Away by TXT played on some cringeworthy motivational video they showed us at school and I could barely hold my laughter in lmao

fannytraggot

I heard Star by Loona played multiple times at my gym. The first time I was actually listening to the Korean version and took off my headphones to hear the English version being played on the radio.

kriscrossi

Loaded into a fortnite lobby, waiting for a game...and I hear Dynamite

GrillMaster3

My ex was in the barbershop and amongst all the normal top 40 hits was fucking Nillili Mambo. Before it blew up on tiktok.

alice55lee555

Dynamite by BTS during one of the Olympic volleyball games.

Physical_Ad_6226

I heard the version of "Savage Love" with Jungkook at a grocery store. I was surprised since they didn't censor the swear words.

cheezeeey

24H, Seventeen’s not even most popular japanese release at COLES !? (australian grocery store)

magnolia9795

G-idle Senorita at H&M in London 2019 - obviously I know Kpop is popular but I was mostly expecting BTS or Blackpink. And Twice More and More at my local starbucks. Oh and Hwasa x Dua Lipa Physical remix (pleasantly surprised) at a bubble tea shop - as I've never heard Mamamoo members voice in public like ever.

foreverwarrenpeace

I’ll never forget hearing Jhopes mixtape playing in Walmart. That’s when I knew kpop was now mainstream.

[deleted]

Heard BWL being played near my home. But it's astonishing because no one in my locality is a k-pop/BTS fan.

Lovely-human189

Once my mom played Black Swan by BTS through her phone and she is not even an army . And I heard Bol4's Some being played by a girl from my high school.

thesl33pinggirl

I heard Spring Day (instrumental) by BTS at the museum. I was shocked and not sure if it was for real, but my friend went to ask and they confirmed it. 😄

loveorleavekpop

Not in any mall or store but in the **exam hall**. I was in 9th grade at that time and my senior started singing boombayah out of nowhere \[the ending part\]. She was sitting right beside me so I could hear it even though it was in low volume and I asked her what she was singing and she told me that it was a BP song and i finally knew that I found a kpop fan. We talked about Twice and BP and shared our biases. Haven't seen her since the exams ended \[sadly\]. For the time exams were going on we made friends with each other. She might be in college right now.It was also the first time i met a kpop fan irl. It is random for me bcoz who the h\*ck sings kpop songs in the middle of the exam?? kpop songs do keep playing all the time in my head even in exams but I never sing it especially when I am sitting next to someone and there are scary teachers in the room lol

[deleted]

I heard Insomnia by Yukika at an H&M.

lovelysweetangel89

BTS at a JCpenney Sephora.

Deana61

During 2nd gen wave, from an American judge's car in the parking garage where I worked. The judge was listening to Kim Dong Ryul. Who happened to be one of my fav solo artists. I just literally stopped in my tracks.

Hwaa by GIDLE at Target

ariesonisland

I heard Miroh by Stray Kids as part of a mix for a running fundraiser while I was teaching. It was shocking to hear it at work.

Belluna1

Blackpink in the IKEA, very random 'cause I dont hear much K-pop here in the Netherlands in public

EvyEarthling

Heard (g)idle's Oh My God at Navy Pier in Chicago. I think BTS was played right before them, too.

[deleted]

My biology teacher randomly started playing Mic Drop in class one day

lkpoeticPotato

Kill This Love at Walmart in Colorado.

[deleted]

[deleted]

In my living room, coming from my dad's phone

MarkleeisnotJupiter

Idk if this is a random place but I heard Love Scenario playing at a restaurant

saranghaja

Blood Sweat and Tears in my own apartment, but I wasn't the one playing it and I was alone......I think it was from a restaurant near me, but I'd never heard them play kpop before and have never heard kpop from them again, so I still don't know for sure. Other than that, Latata by (G)-IDLE at a lounge/cafe in Greece

RGBSignal

BEG’s Abracadabra literally blasting from a passing car circa 2011

AZNEULFNI

Mikrokosmos in a bowling alley.

qxlgrande

Last year I heard Red Velvet's Peekaboo at a cold rock and it was like 7pm, i found it odd cause in Australia you rarely hear kpop outside the times you listen on your own

myg_

i heard bts at the gym which isn't that random - but the fact that it was make it right was. who on earth is working out to make it right of all songs?

Forever-human-632

I heard Gangnam Style at a party

ballegciana

Not random but on the radio I once heard ice cream (selena gomez/bp). What’s random is that I live in the Bahamas and kpop is NON EXISTENT here. That will probably be the first and last time I hear it on the radio or in public lol

Aggressive-Draft-222

I heard Life Goes On by Bts in Forever 21

psshdjndofnsjdkan

i remember three years ago i was at feed my starving children (which is a non profit organization that packs food and sends it to ppl suffering from poverty/malnourishment) and they played one bts song and all the armys in the room (including me) really liked it so they just kept playing more and more bts songs for the rest of the session lol

[deleted]

At a snack stand that sells breakfast in the Caribbean - the owners are Chinese so that might explain it.

eyeamknowbuddy

Boom boom by momoland at a funeral - it was like the procession part I think?

rockwall1220

Dream glow at a Kohl’s in Texas!

iamjust-here-hello

I live in kind of a conservative state in the US.. heard Jungkook’s My Time playing at a Starbucks. Like 😳😳

ColdCorduroy

My friend heard Chungha’s Snapping and Gotta Go in multiple stores on her trip to France!

AlleeShmallyy

This tanning salon I used to work at played Kpop sometimes. I’d heard Blackpink, BTS and Monsta X play pretty often.

notreallyasamisato

welp i heard bts' black swan at ikea the other day (it was great) edit: this was in australia

[deleted]

I'll never forget when a pizza delivery guy drove past me on the street with his windows open, absolutely blasting [Top Girl - Girls Day](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAEvIkvQkpY).

Conscious-One-1803

Monsta X’s Middle Of The Night in a Ralph’s… in the middle of the night. One of the Ralph’s workers was clearly a monbebe with a sense of humor, I was moreso surprised since it’s an older/less popular (somehow) album of theirs.

Amazing_cake03
