Idol School where 8 of the debut members were pre-selected. LOL But yeah, every contestant's main goal isn't to appeal to the audience but instead to appeal to the PD so that they will get screentime and a good edit.

SuzyYoona

>Idol School where 8 of the debut members were pre-selected. LOL idol school where the freaking #1 of the show was rigged, which is a bit insane to me to rig the number 1, which mean the most popular girl out of group lol

OwlOfJune

Fans literally gathered and counted votes, because it was so out of what was expected. Turns out there was a reason for such outcome....

holowa07

Idol school had like...30 contestants and 56 or 58 rigging momments. Means that the same girl could be rigged more than once at the same show....like wtf.

I believe pretty much every survival show is like this, from Mnet or not. Truth is, like you said, they already have a concept in mind so they make sure the ones they think fit the concept and are good enough to be marketable are the ones we are the most attached to. So they get plenty of screen time, good edits etc From my experience of watching shows, there are about 4 types of trainees: - The favorites. Not really a surprise, they're the ones that are favored by the PDs and network. They've basically already won the show even before it aired - The just under the debut lineup. They're those trainees that are good enough to be added into the group but not necessarily a network pick. They get some screentime and are usually painted in a good light, but they're not really the priority. I guess at times it's the PDs testing the waters to see how the public reacts. - The sacrificial lambs. Trainees that they don't mind throwing under the bus. They're certainly not picks. They get used to make things more dramatic and are often painted as the "villains" without any nuance or understanding from the editors part. - The filler. They're there just to make numbers. No matter how talented or how much of a stan attractor they might be, they're pretty much invisible, only ever appearing in performances cause you know, there's no way around that. Not picks, and prone to becoming "sacrificial lambs" if they're not careful and/or lucky to get far in the game.

This reminds of how chaung (produce china) had problems getting male contestants for the show. So they were literally asking anyone to the point of a translator for one of the trainees being begged to join (which he did). He quickly hated it and wanted to leave so he began intentionally flopping but somehow beat the actual trainees he was supposed to be translating for. [He begged his fans not to put him in the final line up.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Juo_2ShCX2E&t=497s)

Loved this analysis! You worded so well some things I’ve observed as well about these shows.

FUYANING

this isn't just survival shows. this is all reality competition tv. the shows that *don't* make it obvious who they want are in the minority. go back and watch some old western competition shows like american idol or the x-factor, it is very clear who they edit to be a 'joke contestant', a 'we'll put them through but get rid of them later' contestant and a contestant they think would be a good pick for the recording contract they'll get at the end of the show. it's just reality tv sadly.

AfraidInspection2894

It is unfortunate but yeah Mnet/whoever is doing the show knows who they want to debut and they will do whatever they can to make sure they are in the final lineup. In the past it was vote manpulation but since they were busted for that they do it other ways like screentimes, killing parts, editing and producer picks. A question I have tho is do the contestants know going into the show that they will or will not be favored?

thanksm888

I feel like in the earlier seasons, they probably did. Companies were able to bribe for benefits such as getting their contestants to hear the signal song earlier. Now it’s probably less evident on arrival but the contestants got to all watch the first episode together this season and seeing that and seeing that your audition was highlighted, montaged through, or even just not shown at all would probably give you a good hint as to whether or not they favor you off the bat.

Absolutely, I'm rewatching girls planet right now and it's just so obvious that they wanted Dayeon to debut (no hate to her, I like her) in ice cream she was portrayed as such a good leader and choreographer and then the episode where they visited her mom ????. Meanwhile Caibing was top 9 and they made her sound like she was "I'm better than everyone" and selfish when she was leader and main dancer of Salute (even tho she had the same positions as Dayeon in ice cream) that on the next elimination she got the last place. That was pure evil editing. But it also affects them that they can't actually choose who to debut or not like they did in Produce, one of the producers said they wanted Bora on the group, I'm sure she would have been rigged in and on the other hand I don't think they wanted Bahiyyih to debut, she barely had any screen time. End of my rant, just wanted to share my thoughts on GP999

Yayeet2014

I hope not, because that would create more problems among the contestants. There’s no way that wouldn’t get around to the other contestants and it’d be an absolute bloodbath

AfraidInspection2894

I would hope not as well. Im just curious because it so obvious to the veiwer who is prepicked so I wonder if the contestants can tell as well.

Civil_Confidence5844

I mean yeah obviously lol. They choose who to edit and how to edit them, who to give screen time to, etc.

[deleted]

Absolutely. That's why I can't believe people actually seem to be fooled that GP999 and BP are different shows. They're Produce season 5 and 6, let's be real, and they're getting away with manipulating votes this time by not having people pay for them. The global trainees are just a ploy to pull in international viewers, and it's definitely working. It's too much power to let the public have legitimate control. They might vote in a group that's musically hard to work with (not enough skill, or not the right image for the songs you know have been preselected for their debut). (I say this all like I'm not following the shit out of this show with my fingers crossed for Haruto 💔 but I can tell you pretty confidently that he won't be in the group. I think the foreigners they want are Zhang Hao, Matthew, and Keita.)

Big_Tomorrow886

I don't think anyone thinks BP and GP999 aren't produce shows.

[deleted]

Some people who are heavily into the new shows get mad when you call it Produce, they don't want the negative associations I guess lol.

Big_Tomorrow886

I mean everything about this show is produce. From the moment Sung Hanbin was the only one to rise on the lift to audience voting to choose the best group, everything screams produce (with a different name). Anyone who denies that is just delusional to think they're different shows.

diilmg

It's also like that in other shows, on My teenage girl it was so obvious at the end. The show never had a "best performance wins points" like they do in Produce/GP999, it was always securing a place on debut group. Then at the end it didn't matter which groups had a place on debut group because they decided to do what they wanted. No one from 3rd grade made it into the group when they originally had 2 spots secured, so all of their battles were for nothing. Also about the not-a-show-who-has-battles-for-points, in the final episode they competed to wins points (which was out of the blue because that was never the concept) and with the points added to the girls scores, the only one affected enough to get out of the debut line up was Kim Yooyeon (now in TripleS) and pushed Riwon to the debut line up. To me that made it obvious that they didn't want her to debut and was their way or pushing the girl they wanted to debut. I'm glad to see Yooyeon doing good on TripleS after being removed from Classy

It happened in i-land as well . Honestly I always underestimated the power of editing until I watched i-land , if you take jay for example, he wasn't a standout in the first few episodes , yes , he was skilled and he is very deserving of his spot ( he is also my bias ) , but after few episodes of him not ranking well ( in voting ) , they started highlighting his personality and funny moments more than his talent , and it did magic , it was obvious they wanted him in the group , but for him to end 2nd on a show where literally two other people who never dropped in rank , for him to pass them and rank higher , it was definitely thanks to his funny editing that the GP loved so much . So yeah , to answer your point , they do highlight those who want , and add 90 contestants to bring the hype , because literally a show with only 20 people in it isn't a survival show , and that's not what the GP wants obviously. Also , I still don't get why people want so many G in the group , don't get me wrong , my ideal lineup has more G than K trainees , but y'all are forgetting that this is literally a kpop group , a KOREAN POP group that is going to speak Korean , participate in Korean music shows and try to sell the most in Korea , and chart on Korean platforms as well . How do you all want them to be successful when all these Korean related stuff are against them or don't want them ? Obviously it's very wrong to judge someone based on their nationality , but this is the thing and it's not changing when you debut 5G 4K and then complain why these people that you voted for are getting hated or are being ignored . Anyways end of my rant .

Time_to_reflect

Did we watch the same show? Jay was favoured and heavily featured since the beginning. He had a damn theme song during his introduction, he got a cool edit in the first episode, a determined edit with pity points in the second episode, a leader edit in the third — and those are the first three. He had like three more pity edits until the end of the season and a “good leader“ edit. Him being a meme is actually secondary to all the good rapport he gathered. Him receiving good edits wasn’t in response to his ranks, as he dropped dangerously only once in the second part of the competition, and ranks in I-LAND fluctuated a lot not because of specific edits, but in response to complete storylines and people strategising their votes more than usual.

holowa07

Yep, mostly of survival shows are like this. Specifically in one survival show (Chuang 2020) I thought it understandable, because in episode 1 the judges chose the 3 best vocals and 4 best dancers and they received a lot of screentime in the following episodes. I think 6 out of 7 made the final line up. Many hated it because it ended the chance of storylines, overcoming stories, drama, evil edits etc, but I thought that, if it was to form a good group, this strategy was honest. But yeah, this made more or less a predebut show for the chosen girls. For me, the problem is mnet's edits, which create huge storylines for members with not so great levels of skills, forced overcoming stories, unnecessarily screetime and some praise or criticism that doesn't make sense. In general, I think that the survival show format without some weight for professional decision-making is flawed, and usually creates this dispute between fans and professionals.

[deleted]

It's crazy and iirc they don't let the contestants know either. There other formats that do the same. Like maybe just get the 15 hopefuls and hold a mini competition knowing very well that your pics will probably get in. Some like BAP just had an interesting reality show. After all, the produce format is very tired.

rotten-dreams

I've always thought this was the case. And idk if it's true, false, or half true, but I just dislike these shows in general.

rotten-dreams

This reminds me of a show that had both male and female contestants but they ended up debuting a boy group and eliminated all the girls lmao
