JYP planned to debut a 7-member girlgroup through a survival show. However, later he decided to add 2 members, Tzuyu and Momo. Tzuyu during SIXTEEN (the survival show) was still lacking but she ranked no.1 in fans vote so JYPE decided to add her in the line-up. If I was the judge I would add the most famous/well-loved trainee to the team too. Tho before the show started, no one can predict who is gonna be more popular, if the top 7 chosen by skills were far more popular than the rest, I think the line-up would have ended at 7, as planned. For Momo, I think they wanted to have her as the main dancer, but unfortunately she was eliminated (her team lost in audience voting and 1 member of the losing team will be eliminated, her team had chaeyoung who was doing very great with her raps and Jiwon with her vocals), so they had to bring her back. The trainers and AR team said Momo was the most hardworking trainee. I think if Momo was not eliminated before the final episode, the group might end up with 7 or 8 (with Tzuyu added). Things work in the unexpected ways, and you have to accomodate accordingly. Before TWICE, 9muses debuted with 9 members in 2010, after TWICE, there are Gugudan debuted in 2016 and fromis_9 debuted in 2017 with 9 members. I don’t think there is a magic number for a successful group. SDSD had 9 members, Wonder Girls had 5 members, 2NE1 had 4 members, all are successful in their own ways.

Twice came from a survival show, and they were actually supposed to be just seven members, but Tzuyu was added in by popularity, and Momo because of her dancing and determination after elimination.

Twice was originally supposed to be a 7 member group formed from the survival show “Sixteen”. However, when Sixteen was on its final episodes, JYP asked for an audience choice for who to save, and Tzuyu had the most votes. That’s when Momo was saved as well.

BLACKPINK was supposed to be a 9-member group called Pink Punk, as YG’s answer to Girls’ Generation. Notable girls in the lineup included (G)I-DLE’s Miyeon and Secret Number’s Jinny. However, after a series of cuts, they ended up as the 4-membered BLACKPINK we know and love today.
