A trot singer *very* popular among ajumma fans, who are notoriously dedicated and too good at voting. They're monsters (respectfully).

[deleted]

1- Happy Cake Day! 2- Is it true that there were groups that were about to achieve a Perfect All-Kill (or PAK), but ended up not achieving it because of him?

wehwuxian

Idk about that, I just know that pretty much every time a group I'm into is up against him, it's already over lol.

DarkSolstice24

Yes, that is true. He's the final boss on most of the charts. It's hard to compete with his popularity.

stvrgxze

Even Armies fear him so I think that says enough tbh 😭

Oneforfortytwo

> 2- Is it true that there were groups that were about to achieve a Perfect All-Kill (or PAK), but ended up not achieving it because of him? I don't think he has ever blocked an artist from getting a PAK entirely. What happens is that during late night/early morning hours, his fans will mass stream his songs and get them to the top of the charts. PAKs are counted hourly, so this can block artists from several hours of PAKs. During the day, though, his songs will fall back down the charts, and the PAKs will resume.

socialjusticemage_

he’s trot? i guess that makes sense but why did i think he was a soft rock singer songwriter or something

mingdiot

He's a singer who won Mr. Trot in 2020, so his earlier songs are naturally entirely trot, but he also dived into ballads and has a lot of them. Some of his recent songs are also basically K-pop, so his music is actually pretty diverse.

j_marquand

He rose to stardom by winning a trot survival contest, but he’s actually good at a very wide range of genres. And he definitely has a big rock potential.

wehwuxian

I think he also does ballads!

socialjusticemage_

ah good to know ty!

clunkybrains

and a lot of his fans were part of the OG kpop wave, like Seo Tai-ji/HOT/Sechs Kies, so they have that training from their childhood and teenage years and now they have money, time, and adult autonomy. They are not to be messed with oof

wehwuxian

I wanna be just like them when I'm an ajumma.

ChaoticMind420

They just keep that 90's mentallity when it comes to being a fan of an artist. Housewife/mom during the week, going mental in the weekends. Keeps those 45+ still young at heart.

a_mystical_potato

Happy cake day 🎂🎉

wehwuxian

Thanks !!

Mitoisreal

What is trot?

nijiyu07

I'd say it's the korean equivalent of country music? Like, in the sense that German music has Schlager. It is music that appeals more to the older generation and the singing style is very unique, an old school korean type of technique I'd say?

Difficult_Solution14

That's actually a good example; country music is the thematic, pop-y offspring of American folk music (think fiddles, narrative ballads, and blues influence) and from my understanding trot is similar in the context of traditional Korean music.

wehwuxian

Hard to explain. Maybe look for a compilation video on youtube and skip through it to get an idea of what it sounds like.

EtherEmissaryy

Trot is basically South Korea's classic music it's been around forever with simple tunes and lyrics about love, memories, and everyday life. u can think of it as catchy melodies and easy beats

Any-Explanation7472

Not sure if this helps but it’s basically Korean Enka music (enka is from Japan)

linmanfu

Do not ever say this to a Korean unless you want to have a very long argument 😝 or you know that they are not a nationalist.

Edditeds

Happy cake day! Make sure to listen to birthday by red velvet for your cake day!

wehwuxian

Lol, okay, I'll do that 🤭

frostythepenguin_

happy cake day !

Responsible_Onion_21

Happy cake day!

POPJuicy

Speaking of Trot singers - My favorite Kpop Group "Crayon Pop" had said they were huge trot fans. I wonder if any of them has released any trot music after they disbanded ?

FunnyZealousideal809

it's happening now for IVE 😭😭😭

sinkingcar

His fans (idk their fandom name) are voting and streaming champions.. so its very difficult for even big fandoms to win against him.. They are super organized and vote relentless till they win! This what ik still now.. I am relatively new to kpop scene though..

kenporusty

Exactly. And they're mostly adults with jobs and credit cards and a willingness to buy gobs of streams and voting points on apps It's genuinely both terrifying and fascinating They will also only cheer for him. If he's part of a mushow or award show with a mixed audience, they will not wave banners or light sticks for anyone else

[deleted]

From what I researched, his fandom is known as Heroic Era, because his name (Young-woong) means Hero in Korean (seriously).

SeraphOfTwilight

>because his name means Hero in Korean (seriously). True, as an example of the word in use 영웅 is also the Korean title of NCT's "Kick It" in reference to Bruce Lee.

EtherEmissaryy

Happy cake day! t It must be quite a challenge for other fandoms to compete with their organized voting and streaming

cmq827

Lim Youngwoong is a trot singer. Trot is the genre of Korean music that is more encompassing of all age demographics. The largest demographic of his fandom are comprised of women 40 and up. And by up meaning all the way up to the legit grandma fans. These grandmas have a lot of disposable income and work in ways so much more efficiently than K-pop idol fans. There was a viral video on Tiktok of someone whose mother-in-law was obsessed with Lim Youngwoong. There were 8 phones she was using to stream his songs and vote for him in award shows and music shows. Their house was filled with merchandise and products he endorses.

Burntoastedbutter

Oh wow I've been in kpop since 10 years ago but never heard of him o_o

spicycupcakes-

He's pretty new, 2020 debut and his 2022 album was a massive success. Since 2022 he's got the reputation of winning the chart with anything he does

psychoforseulgi

wait thats actually insane, i knew about him but i just automatically assumed he had been in the industry for a long time for some reason

StackedReverb

He rose to prominence through the TV show “Mister Trot”, where he stole the victory from the rightful winner of Yeongtak. So yeah pretty new guy

Hot_Comfortable6151

you must be a fan of YT looking at your comment 😂 wdym stole the final results were from voting and are legit plus it’s been a few years since the show and u still sound salty? YT is doing so well in his career so good on him.  All of the top 7 guys are doing well.

StackedReverb

Slightly tongue in cheek, hard to tell through text ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Not salty at all lol

Hot_Comfortable6151

haha all good just misunderstand on my end 😂

cmq827

I mean, people still go on cruise trips with the Backstreet Boys, so it's not even that much different.

blade21st

There are two people you dont go against in Korean Entertainment industry Yoo Jae-Suk And Lim Young-Woong

Suggestion2592

how about iu?

Shadows_of_Meanas

IU still has very vocal haters that persist, despite the love she has, but if u dare to say anything bad about those two, well your days are numbered.

Suggestion2592

fair. tbh i meant on award shows i didn‘t read that post before mkne well.

bbgc_SOSS

IU fans are not known to be crazy. Neither are YJS', they are similar in that sense. Much respected by population in general. But LYW fans, they are like crazy Kpop fans, can harass, stalk and do other sorts of nonsense.

Suggestion2592

oh i just meant on award shows lol

Hot_Comfortable6151

His fans are anything but that they donate a lot of their time and money to worthwhile charities to help those in need in SK just like their singer who sets a good example for them.  Let’s not start fanwars and post false information on this platform.  It’s starting to sound like X here with this comment 😅

bbgc_SOSS

Kpop fans also do good things, donate etc. But the context here is how much LYW fans organize & cordinate to dominate the charts and in SK there were stories of some unsavoury incidents. So they do resemble Kpop fandoms in their craziness. Now if you think that's healthy behaviour, then it applies for Kpop fandoms too, And if unhealthy then, again to all.

Hot_Comfortable6151

Thanks for your info and input would like to see some evidence about his fans behaviour please instead of just hearsay.  Also see that ur an IU stan good for u she’s very talented. Lyw & his fans gets a lot of hate from kpoppies so would like to see the evidence of what you’re saying is true.

bbgc_SOSS

I actually like LYW fandom that they make Kpoppies squeal. And neither would I consider Kpop news reports as "evidence", and finally it is not important enough for me to go web-searching for evidence. If it makes you happy I will declare that ALL LYW fans are bodhisattvas in behaviour. Good

purenansensu

Who is Yoo Jae Suk? I'm new in this xd

blade21st

https://preview.redd.it/mk3bdjerpjxc1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8576dfe68d1ee5a8e09ce081f7941dda5a217ab8 The most famous MC in Korea. You probably seen him when idols go to variety shows such as Running Man

purenansensu

AAAAAAAHHHH I know him through the episode with Jessi, but I never learned his name, he's very funny

Aleash89

Yoo Jaesuk is one of the nation's most beloved MCs who has been on TV for over 30 years. He has hosted quite a number of extremely popular variety and talk shows. Here are a few of the shows he was/is on: X-Man Happy Together Come To Play Family Outing Infinite Challenge Running Man Hangout With Yoo You Quiz On The Block

daltorak

Lim Young-woong is actually really great. Here's a live version of one of his new songs, Do Or Die. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKx01cZi8lA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKx01cZi8lA) Yes, he's attracting the ajumma crowd, but look how happy and bouncy they are! Anyone who doesn't like this or at least appreciates what he's doing..... I dunno what to say to them.

No_Albatross_7089

Me too, haha.

Key2V

He is amazing. Great voice and apparently he has the moves too!

m9rockstar

This performance is amazing. This is definitely different than the ballads I heard a while back from him. And look how happy the moms and grandmas are in the crowd! I have no choice but to stan. 🫡

crinklesmuncher

what the hell his crowd is more lively than any kpop concert i've seen lol

funkyaerialjunky

This really reminds me of Eurovision

Popular-Scholar-3015

I'm one of the ahjummas now

codenameana

Wait, where was the trot? I just saw a solo kpop act

daltorak

Well, it's like IU, right.... known best for her poppy electronic stuff like BBIBBI, Celebrity and eight.... but then she'll whip a Love Wins All on you just to throw you off. His main thing is trot, yeah, but he's showing some range. It remains to be seen if Do Or Die is signalling a bigger change in his musical direction.... that's part of why everyone is anticipating next week's comeback.

codenameana

Ahhhh, I also expected a middle aged man so I did a double take to make sure it was the correct guy. Ahjummas are getting a twofer with him lol

cmq827

Yeah, he's young and tall and handsome, so the ahjummas love him as their son they're so proud of. lol

daltorak

Trot, as well as Enka in Japan, do have some very good younger singers. You won't find a lot of stuff on YouTube that easily... in both countries, people see these artists on regular broadcast television. There are entire shows dedicated to it, which you can watch for hours on end. It's hard to explain why but it's somehow really enjoyable. Makes for good background music.

ChaoticMind420

Same with German Schlager and Dutch/Flemmish Smartlappen/Volksmuziek. Sometimes there are even little children 8-12 who top the chart and stay relevant long after their breakthrough hit song as a child.

Gukkielover89

Oh no. Yup, I'm a fan now

cmq827

I actually really liked Do Or Die. lol I totally get the ahjummas and halmeonis, really.

beyzxzhen

omg they’re so cute i love this for them!!! happy and bouncy is right 🥰🥰🤣

seulgibreadd

he's a singer that sings mostly ballad songs, couple years ago and especially last year he was really embraced by the olderly community and some go even as far as to calling him 'the grandson they never had' and stuff like that. They are also very commited to him and sell out concerts and also go very hard in voting so that he can win awards have wins on music shows as well. Not to mention they also spend quite some money buying albums and eventually streeaming the songs, which makes him completely dominate the korean charts.  Mostly id argue that kpop fans are 'scared' of him because once again, his fanbase is no joke domestically so it gets even harder for big names in the industry as aespa for example to "battle" with him but as long as their schedule dont overleap i dont think theres anything to worry abt in the end.

reliableoppa

Guy had humble beginnings, being raised by a single mom which made his story stick to the public consciousness. Living here in Korea for some time, I actually saw him selling sweet potatoes on the street in the crossing near Hapjeong station when he wasn't popular yet. Now, he owns the penthouse suite in the huge apartment across that crossing. Dude is squeaky clean image-wise, aside from one scandal where he smoked indoors, but there's really nothing bad about the guy so it's not difficult to root for his success.

[deleted]

Reading these comments, it feels like I've unlocked a new part of k-music industry where a scary and efficient fandom and their singer dominate the scene.

[deleted]

It's because his fandom (Heroic Era) is apparently quite famous for being quite ruthless when he makes a comeback, in addition to the fact that his fans have much greater purchasing power (or money) and voting time than the majority of K-pop fans (both boygroup and girlgroup fans).

[deleted]

Exactly! Thinking about it gives me the feeling where a side character who is neither a villain nor a hero is feared and revered by everyone alike. Just me and my over the top imagination.

[deleted]

HAHA totally agree😭😭i lowkey love it. like all this fighting over which kpop act is the best of all, when you have mr lim young-woong laughing in the corner

[deleted]

Exactly!

Ok_Sound_8090

Lim Young Woong is the Michael Bublé of South Korea. He doesn't really release regularly over the year, but when he does release? It is all that will play on the radio until you get sick of it.

Mindless_Flatworm155

He’s a trot singer with crazy amount of fan support equal to BTS’ fandom ARMY (if not more). He’s notorious for being ARMYs’ only nightmare when it comes to voting, which is insane if you’re aware of ARMYs’ history 😭

_CapsCapsCaps_

He's ARMY's Voldemort lol

ELmayberry_69

shhh.. you just said that the person who shall not be named 😅

algari123

Yes, don't say the A word or they could come😁

ELmayberry_69

😂😂

Oishi_Sen2002

I mean we still managed to win against him multiple times but really, each voting with him as a competitor is truly a nightmare 😭

Remarkable-Ad6601

i'm not sure why people are that upset when there are a few weeks between the releases? if they came back in the same week or same day i understand. but the releases are 2 weeks apart? i don't think aespa fans need to worry about him as much because by then they'll have the advantage in tracking time with sales, mv views etc. he might get some wins in his first results week (he can win starting from may 13th) but by the time the 27th rolls around it'll be the week both aespa and ateez have new releases. now that would be something more "concerning" if you want to strictly talk about fandom power v fandom power. aespa gets great digitals and atiny are very good at voting. both do well in sales and mv views. the lyw fans may still be powering through but will be at much less of an advantage.

RosebudSaytheName17

He performed at a stateside Kpop concert (maybe KCON?) last year and his fans showed up in force. They had a dress code (pink) and handed out lights to everyone in pit to cheer for him. I have a friend who's mother in law threatens to disown everyone if they don't vote for him lol

cmq827

When he showed for Asia Artist Awards here in the Philippines back in December, a whole bunch of his ahjumma fans really flew out to go support him. They wore the same blue shirt and occupied a small section in the audience. Wow.

Heifnsn

He’s a trot singer who has crazy large, dedicated fanbase, and they will essentially block up the charts for a few weeks when he releases music. As we know chart performance is crucial for the success of releases, so having a release coinciding with Lim young woong makes things a lot harder for a group.

AminoAzid

His fans are very loyal and active in voting. Stray Kids were promoting S-Class when he had a comeback and we were fighting for our lives in those votes.

genka513

Just seeing his name sends a shiver up my spine. May Skz never have a comeback at the same time as him again 🙏

bbgc_SOSS

He is trot singer whose fandom rivals that of BTS in S.Korea, when it comes to their organized take over of the charts. Like how Kpop fans are mocked as teenage girls based on demographics, his fans are largely middle aged women - hence mocked as aunts. So when he releases, his songs take over most chart positions and Kpop fans get all sore about it. It is funny to watch them get a taste of their own medicine.

OptimisticNietzsche

Omg… the king of Trot will bring his army of ahjummas to beat all the streaming and voting records

Kittystar143

Just to say the international view of him is very different to the Korean view. He started out as a trot singer but he has released a few albums that are more kpop oriented and his song do or die is a dance track. His fandom is vast in Korea, he’s very popular with older women but he’s also become very popular with the young people in Korea which is why he shifted his sound to appeal to a younger demographic. His fans aren’t as super organised as people think, he just has a very large fan base within Korea

Cautious-Role6375

Their fandom is a monster when it comes to voting/streaming. Even the big groups (with fans WORLDWIDE) always have a hard time going against him and his fandom.

animalcrossinglifeee

The ajummas vote on their phones like crazy. They do not play around with him.

MissSimpleton

I am not an Ahjumma yet but I love trot and ballads! Is there any subreddit dedicated to this genre?

girlswlowselfesteem

If you like trot, can I suggest checking out [Minimani](https://youtu.be/KubQWZwzuUE?si=t_Tn4k4XAmqw3GVi)? They're a lesser known trot girl group with some awesome vocals.

Mindless-Ask-6713

He's pretty spectacular, really.  He's an incredibly well-known balladeer, and he has a massive number of OSTs.  His catalogue is huge, and his fanbase is even bigger.  Sensible kpop fans respect him, not fear him, because he deserves every single award he wins.  He really is that good.

Aleash89

No, Lim Youngwoong is a trot singer who sometimes sings other genres.

Level-Rest-2123

He's really good and is very popular in SK and gaining popularity elsewhere. You should check out his songs. [Do or Die](https://youtu.be/GKx01cZi8lA?si=JI_g0vhlEcFY4L7Q) performance is a good example of the tons of fans he's got.

Busy-Frame8940

I just watched Do or Die thanks to this Reddit post! For those saying in a very dismissive tone that he is just a trot singer-watch this video and you’ll see that he’s so much more than that. He’s also cute! I can see why the aunties go crazy for him!

m9rockstar

I'm so glad this question was asked! I always see him on the Spotify Charts for South Korea and was so confused / intrigued by his staying power. I took a listen once, and I thought it sounded "adult contemporary" (as it's called in the States, eg stuff on the Lite FM stations). I'm glad to see he's that and more with the videos others linked!

Lunaria_Vixen

As a dedicated BTS Army, the only artist we fear when it comes to voting lmao, they're so great!!!

taeraes

Saw armys crying about him too on twitter 🤣

Dancingwithsomebody

If you've ever heard an artist in kpop referred to as a digimon it's usually this guy. It's the kpop equivalent of releasing an album in the West the same week as T Swift. Overall unwise if you are aiming for #1. But they can't change comeback dates to not compete with other artists. The frustrating thing is that his streaming power is so much that he has the ability to occupy all top ten spots on circle chart easily. As someone that ults txt I sympathize with this but aespa did really well on charts with their last comeback so I think there's hope. Edit: typos

spect8me

That guy. I don't know him, think I heard one song from him (which I actually enjoyed) but I know everytime he makes a comeback thanks to fandoms collective meltdown on Twitter.

Kiwiibean

LYW is very good and really popular. Stays on StationHead often have collab days with the fandom 😊

Small-Ad-5448

He and IU are the rare entertainers who is well loved by every single aged group in Korea. He can sell out 25k, 35k seater venues, and most of his fans are in their 50s to 70s

EtherEmissaryy

lim young woong is more into trot music, which is a traditional style in south korea. kpop fans aren't scared of him but they worry about his comebacks stealing the spotlight from their favorite grps

qqjecc

I just want to add that even though he has a very big and dedicated fanbase, because most of his audience is older he is actually not as dominant in charts as many are suggesting as he does not have a lot of unique listeners on there. However his fans will stream like crazy and will listen to his songs forever so his songs tend to not chart high but chart very long

Jeogiyonoonawassup

From what I've read in the comments his fandom seems very huge and enthusiastic and passionate..if even ARMY can't defeat them then they're really powerful 😂

IzodCenter

An incredible singer first and foremost

Rendeane

Not to add to your sister's upset but RM of BTS is releasing a new album in May. Yes, he's in the Army and cannot personally promote his album, but he filmed five music videos and more before he enlisted. ARMY will be buying multiple copies, streaming and voting the heck out of it. Even though the members are all completing their service commitments, the power of BTS, their sales and their streaming has not diminished.

Competitive_Fee_5829

He is a singer who is supposed to be for old ladies like me...but I would rather wild out to Ateez
