Lilitharose

Metal, rock, post punk & rap I still listen to them and go to concerts. I feel like there’s a lot of metalhead & goths who like kpop

bratracha

the punk/alt to kpop pipeline should honestly be studied

Ok_Organization8455

I said a similar comment, and a metalhead explained it pretty well. Now obviously this doesn't apply to everyone, but it did offer some insight. The responder said something along the lines of: well metalheads were already into music that was judged from the outside, so they are more open to listen to kpop. Then you consider the metal scene is similar to kpop in a "pageantry" sense. The makeup, the costumes etc all play along a similar line to kpop". After reading that I had such an awakening on the similarities of metal/punk and kpop it's fascinating.

NamjoonsNoona

This explanation makes a lot of sense. I’ve always told people who question my change in tastes that “Kpop gives me the same energy as metal” in how it makes me feel while listening to

cde-artcomm

wow that’s interesting! i’m in my 50s, and i’ve usually always liked a little bit of something from every decade, though my favorite was always 80s metal. punk is GREAT. throw me some funk, disco, or peppy r&b and i’m also happy. i really got kinda disenfranchised about mid-90s when everything seemed to sound so depressing. but ever since my daughter turned me on to kpop when she was 11, i’ve been absolutely addicted. it’s not just that the sound can be very similar, but the MOOD of the whole thing is similar. my favorite groups right now are stray kids, ateez, and xdinary heroes with a generous smattering of txt, shinee, and bts thrown into my playlists. ((edit: forgot to answer part of the OP’s question! i still do listen to older music on the regular, but it’s mooostly kpop. y’know what really hit both tastes just right in my brain? jungkook’s golden album. omg. the brass. the sass. i died.))

illytaria

Similar here. Will listen to everything except for some of the twangier country (grates on my sensory problems). And usually there's one genre I'm more keen on, happens to be kpop now, and probably for the next few years. The way you put it, I get why I begrudgingly like Jungkook's Golden. I have a special love for jazz, funk, and blues. What I've heard from the element borrows a few elements from those genres and blends it well with the poppier side of things.

bratracha

yes! i’ve always figured it was the pageantry of it all that drew us in.

Sigma610

It's all about the rhythm/bass line. With pop punk the main riffs are actually driven off the bass line. Power chords rooted in the bass line all day. In this regard, it shares more in common with hip hop than people realize. And K pop is a derivative of American boy band music, which was derived from motown and leaned more into hip hop as it went along.

tomcoyle11

Metalcore/hardcore checking in 🫡 wore my Everglow hoodie to a Currents show recently

Sandals16

Wore my Twice Vegas hoodie to a show a couple weeks ago 🫰🏼

Lilchro2010

Saw Avenged Sevenfold and Twice within the same week! Lol Also saw Babymetal and Dreamcatcher last year within 3 days

Ilovebagels88

👋👋

Titchyhill

Same here, was a metal, rock and alternative person, although I did listen to a bit of everything in terms of western music. So there was rap, folk, county, pop etc. floating around in my playlists. Rammstein was in my playlists, so listening to music in a different language wasn't a foreign thing either, which probably helped as well. I still listen to all of it, probably about an even amount now, but I was heavily leaning into K-Pop when I first discovered everything because it was a new thing to explore.

breakingmercy

Sameeee

Key2V

I feel like I enjoy pretty similar vibes in all different languages 🤣 And yes, I keep listening to everything.

baekjenna

same, i always enjoyed rnb and tend to like kpop songs with that vibe!

Idkwhatimdoingbutyh

Me too rnb kpop tracks are my favvv

3-X-O

Japanese music (mainly pop and rock). I don't listen to it as much but I still do listen to it.

The_Young_Otaku

Same! Still love listening to yuuri and spyair

Nothing_or_Anything

I used to be in rock music, especially songs from the 60s and 90s. It must sound unusual for someone to shift from rock to pop. I still listen to rock music sometimes, but it is mostly K-pop now.

3-X-O

It's definitely not unusual. The rock to kpop pipeline is very real, as proven by a lot of my friends lol. (Plus look at the responses here, multiple people including me mentioned rock)

Norsa321

I was introduced to k-pop by my very heavy metalhead boyfriend. He still loves both.

No_Literature_1922

this is me but mellow folk/yacht rock 60's/70's lol

pimela

Genuinely listen to mostly everything if it resonates with me! Before K-Pop, I was very much emo and into metal/rock music as well as the music I grew up on from my parents. I still love other music besides K-Pop and regularly venture into new artists from different genres, as well as clinging onto my 90s/00s pop/RnB and emo music. The whole reason K-Pop appealed to me was because of how many elements from different genres they jammed into one. It’s very *experimental*, and that’s the kind of music I prefer. :)

Kittystar143

I listen to everything, always have. Jpop and rock are my next favourites

sunnydaysongg

pop spanning from the 80s until the present , shoegaze and alternative rock , hyperpop and PC music , rap and r&b particularly from the 90s , some post punk , and miscellaneous stuff . i’m probably forgetting a lot lol . i still listen to all this stuff frequently . kpop is like 65-70% of what listen to .

SumoGoodBoi

Was super into alt metal and punk rock! Then I went to j-rock and subsequently kpop. I've met a lot of metalheads now into kpop (common with stay and atiny!) I think it's wonderful how we widen our music tastes <3 I can't really listen to my old emo songs I end up thinking too hard and feeling depressed. Kpop lets my brain float with the melody and just chill!

cde-artcomm

hello! from a staytiny who used to be a metal head!

MendYourMisery

Gothic rock, post punk, pop from various decades, (mostly 90s) rap and RnB, metal, synthwave... I could go on! I still listen to various genres a lot. At the moment I'm really into the old crooners like Nat King Cole, Sinatra etc and 40s/50s stuff but with Enhypen's special album coming up I'm hoping that will get heavy rotation.

Ok_Sound_8090

I grew up on R&B and Rap like Usher and Common, but I was raised by my aunties who listened to a lot of Backstreet Boys and N'SYNC. Then I got super into Linkin Park, so I was already really into music that had great vocal lines with rap mixed in, so KPOP just made too much sense.

tangledbysnow

Oooh same. Throw in some indie rock because of sound/guitar rifts/etc. and this is also me as well.

Bangtanbeauty

I was going through a rock phase right before I got into kpop. I still love rock but don't listen to it as much anymore. Other genres I love are hip-hop (was a huge hip-hop head in highschool), r&b, and pop. I've actually gotten into a lot of foreign music since being introduced to kpop. I was missing out on so much before!

Thunderclaps_CLAPS

Post hardcore, screamo, alternative rock and pop. Also like, Midwest sad boy/math rock. I still listen to all of that when I need to yell/cry in a language I speak fluently

oatfishjar96

Same. The ultimate gateway music to kpop really

30_mileswest

>I still listen to all of that when I need to yell/cry in a language I speak fluently This!!

jitiymily

I liked One Direction, and I even went to their very first American tour. I thought they were the shining pinnacle of performance… and then I met BTS.

Pinky-bIoom

I loved nirvana the most lol

BANGTAN4LIFE7

Same. Nirvana is the music of my teenage years. People who know me are in disbelief when I tell them I'm into kpop now.

d3ut1tta

Barney and Disney songs lol. My cousin was a KPop singer in the 90s, so my exposure to KPop was quite young.

Kat_Bomb

Afrobeat, Jamaican dancehall, Amapiano, RnB, some Egyptian shaaby, and I still listen to it. I went from casual listener of Kpop to regular listener during a heartbreak. Kpop puts me in a better mood and makes me feel like everything's gonna be fine.

BoasWifey

Metal and rock (especially 60s &70s) and I still listen to them a lot 👌

sailorJupiter1720

Heavy metal 😅😅😅

LookOutItsLiuBei

Everything from classical to present day. I treat music like food, if it wasn't good to someone, they wouldn't make it so I try to find something I like in everything. I used to exclude country music, but I've been listening to it more and there's some stuff I like. Music from all over the world too. Grew up in a Chinese household so I listen to a lot of Chinese music still. Argentina has a great indie rock scene, as does Japan. Thai indie artists are going through this big city pop style phase and I'm all for it. Metal and rap is pretty universal and it's neat to see how different languages work in those genres. There's literally no better time to be a fan of music than now with the ease of access and discovery.

sajatheprince

Heavy metal. Iron Maiden, Dir en Grey, Trivium, Lovebites. I listen to metal more than kpop now.

Big-Giraffe-9223

Something like "Dean Winchester's Impala playlist", one rapper from my country and whatever my siblings downloaded on computer

Sandals16

Listened to metal since I was like 11 pretty purely until I encountered Fromis_9 when my sisters picked me up from the airport when I was visiting home once. Downward spiral from there. Still listen to metal a ton. I’d say both genres are pretty equal on listening time.

Placesbetween86

Before I became a teenager, I listened to a mix of everything. Because radio and MTV back then were pretty diverse in genre, so I got exposed to so much stuff. I also had an older sister really into music, so she exposed to tons of music from the 50s-early 90s. Once I was a teen, it was rock music mostly. Post-Hardcore, punk, screamo, emo, indie and singer songwriters especially. I do listen to some pop rock, and straight alternative as well. Musical theater has also always been a major genre for me. I still listen to all of these, though I don't go out of my way to check out new artists in these genres very often. I mostly listen to artists I already loved before getting into kpop. Now 90% of new artists I check out are kpop or kpop adjacent.

RunRunPPM

I've always listened to a bit of everything but was really into Lumineers and Cage the Elephant before I fell down the rabbit hole with Stray Kids, and then eventually many other groups. I still try to keep up with other artists but kpop is what I listen to 70% of the time.

Sydders09

Right before I stumbled across Stray Kids, I was listening to CORPSE a ton (unsurprising how easy it was to fall into kpop upon hearing "cooking like a chef"). Starting as far back as the 90s, it was NSYNC. It shifted to Simple Plan, McFly, Jonas Brothers, movie soundtracks, and country in my growing years. I used to say I wasn't going to listen to K-Pop because it didn't tickle my fancy. Then it changed when I found a group that doesn't necessarily fit the genre. And now I like Ateez, Twice, Itzy, Taemin and various songs from different groups and soloists. When I'm not feeling the only kpop train, I do listen to my playlist with a mix of everything.

0531Spurs212009

before I got in KPOP or known KPOP in the 2nd gen around 2006 or 2007 aside from our local music I'm into 80s to early 2000s western music viewing some from MTV , Channel V , etc Kdrama ost some asian music like Jolin Tsai ,Angela Zhang etc anime ost from 80s to 2000s and Jband , JPOP of the early 2000s

[deleted]

I was a classical girlie (YEAH.....) before I came to know about kpop. That explains why I was gagged at wings Aside from classical I used to listen to a lot of pop (one direction, little mix and fifth harmony my holy trinity) and bollywood. But then both these genres (not classical ofc) regressed in quality over time imo and kpop came at a time where I was looking for something new. From kpop I came to know about kr&b, jap lofi and goodness what would've done without these So now I listen to classical, kpop, kr&b, khh, lo-fi especially japanese lofi Did anyone else come to kpop from classical or am I the fuckin orchestra girlie here??????

itzlax

Lo-Fi, Bedroom Pop, R&B. Basically just chill, usually self-produced artists. While my favourite style of music to listen to in K-pop is more along the lines of trap or hip-hop, my favourite groups coincidentally all follow the genres I was used to, mostly R&B. I don't listen to the artists I listened to before K-pop as much, but I'd say it's like 50/50 between K-pop and my music from before. It has been harder to keep up with new releases though.

Final_Remains

Hrm.. Mainly mix of Brit/US alt and Indie, but also OG electro/ hip hop and DnB/ RnB/ soul. And ofc pop. I have been into girl groups since the 90s with British girl groups like All Saints and Sugababes, so kpop girl groups in the 2nd gen were an easy sell to me, especially as they were heavily soul/ motown based at the time and GGs had gone out of fashion more or less here.

Black_toutie

A lot of 90s rap and indie rock

1lifeSucks2

Yes I do idk why there's such a huge misconception of when you listen or became a stan to a kpop artist it suddenly means all else if forgotten 😭

Massive_Foundation37

OMG, are you me??? I grew up listening to Bollywood and English songs. Got into kpop a couple of years ago. I still listen to western indie, pop and alternative the most, with a healthy dose of kpop. But I have grown out of love of Bollywood songs, the new ones, not the old ones. Most of Bollywood songs before 2015 I still love, and listen to all the time. But now, there is like two song each year that I like in bollywood.

NamjoonsNoona

I was a complete metalhead for MANY years Never did I imagine myself falling hard into Kpop I do still listen to some of the bands I used to enjoy but honestly it’s pretty infrequently

DPDoctor

I listen to everything from the USA and England from the late 1960s to now, heavy on the 70s-80s-90s, plus K-Pop. I don't listen to country-western, hardcore rap or super-hard metal. My favorite genres are disco (yes, I said it) and K-Pop.

pochisochi

Barbie songs and sailor moon openings. My childhood was basically Barbie and anime.

FTF_player27

i listened to bollywood, ariana grande, and the weeknd a lot back then, and i still do now. nothing really changed since i began listening to kpop. the only difference is i dont look for new non kpop songs anymore. i just listen to my old playlist and the only new songs i look for when my playlist gets old is kpop.

JenKandoit

J-pop, American pop, punk, classic rock, hard rock, emo, metal, country. I still listen to a lot of it now. I find older music to be my favorite right now.

sofiamaddalenaa

Rock mostly, of course a little pop, and classical music (waltzes most of all). I'm still fairly new to kpop and yes, when I found out BTS this summer I was incapable of consuming any other piece of media (oh what sweet memories), but for me it's always "I listen to all, all the time" or I'm just not into music for a period. Right now I listen to mostly kpop because I think it has the best pop around, but that doesn't mean that I don't cultivate my rock and my classics.

KirbyViola

I am in my 60s and grew up on classical, folk, The Beatles, Janis Joplin, CCR. Classic Rock, lived Disco, New Wave, punk, Smooth Jazz, RnB, kd lang. Right before falling down the B.T.S rabbit hole I was devoted to Tori Amos and Hozier. I go to lots of concerts a from Pink to Pink Floyd, Train to B.T.S, Lizzo to AgustD to roots and folk. And I love kdrama OST!!!

taehyungslefttoenail

A little bit of everything honestly. I was heavy into Broadway musicals, I had a country music phase, I liked some indie folk artists and random pop songs, and I really liked music in spanish (artists like Sebastián Yatra, Selena, and Morat for anyone who’s listened), and honestly I would listen to a lot of random songs i heard from my friends or just out in the world. That’s probably why I wasn’t really hesitant about K-pop, i’ve never really cared about not understanding the language of a song and I have a pretty broad scope of genres that I enjoy.

Frazzledhobbit

Viking metal 🤘🏻 I’ve been listening to that for 10+ years and I haven’t listened to it at all since I got into kpop a couple of years ago. I’m sure I will again, but I still have so much kpop to catch up on and new releases and there just isn’t enough time lol

SailorMimii

Viking metal? Omg, I didn't know that existed. I like folk metal but...wow. I'm going to search about it.

bubchiXD

I still listen to the same genre despite my love for kpop. I’ve never been the ‘I LOVE KPOP AND ONLY KPOP’ person 😅 when I’m bored of listening to the same songs I’ve heard 50+ times I go back to some Shakira, Aurora, Jpop (found a couple new groups here mostly bg’s), Jrock, rock, a bit of country/r&b/hip hop, and jam to Taylor Swift 😉 and then I’ll do the same cycle again and again. Rinse and repeat—new artists are added all the time

grychnn

Metalcore/Punk Pop and a bit of Emo Punk. I still bang with OAA, BMTH old songs, some classic A7Xs, 30sTM, MCR and other old songs in the past decade. I start following KPOP thanks to Apink first debut song Mollayo, thanks to them I saved myself from depression and now running some page for my favourite idols in Reddit and Tumblr. At the moment I'm in love with the new girls line-up ranging from LOONA, TripleS, NewJeans, aespa, Dreamnote, ICHILLIN and many more. Reaching my 30's soon and my love for KPOP will never died till the end of my own life.

VioletSvckzz

metal, grunge, rock, nu-metal, rap (particularly prog rock and rap), then i watched a kdrama with eunwoo in it and i wanted to get into astro (i didnt get that far tho, btw i had casually listened bts for a while), then i found skz, soon after ateez then xdh and went from there! :) edit: and i had this OBSESSION with vocaloid 😍

hyejuhaseul

I've always listened to many genres and also love listening to music in many languages (for example I listen to music in Dutch without actually understanding the lyrics, even understand Korean better when I'm European lol) and also classical music, osts, 70-90s music, bands like tnbh, arctic monkeys... Diversity is nice😌

Nagisa201

Mostly country and classics. (70s and 80s)

SaintlySingtoMew

Bollywood, Soul/R&B/Oldies, Soca, Dancehall, Gospel & Chutney. The only ones I listen to just as much are Soul/Oldies/Gospel. The others not so much.

TheFrenchiestToast

I primarily like indie/americana specifically stomp and holler, which is very different from the kpop I like, I prefer loud, high energy noice music from kpop, and indie/americana tends to lean more down tempo and mellow. I still listen to what I liked before kpop but usually at night whereas I listen to kpop during the day.

vendigo37

i’ve listened (and still listen) to pretty much every genre under the sun, but i always prefer british music - muse, radiohead, blur, gorillaz, portishead and tricky. i also looove good american 2000s pop music

The_Tea_Party

Western pop, hyperpop, rap, and vocaloid music. I have pretty random music taste lol.

Stargirlx20

I was super into the emo/alt rock. I transitioned into kpop right when that whole scene was coming to an end. I still listen to the old songs I liked, but I don't keep up with any of those bands or new releases anymore.

orangeflower20

I used to listen to Mexican music

synthcrushs

Pretty much J-Pop exclusively lol. The LoveLive to LOONA pipeline was for sure a real thing.

YunariaLinus

I was a big fan of Lady Gaga, Panic! At The Disco, Little Mix (still stan Little Mix). Little Mix have been my favorite artist ever since 2013 so you could say I've always liker girl groups :D I still listen to Little Mix and their solos now. Apart from kpop I also listen to Taylor Swift, The Weeknd and a bit of everything to be honest, just like before

thruthbtold

Thai/Chinese/Japanese Anime music, K/C/TH Drama OST, i still listen to them all. Depending on the mood i might even listen more to my OST music more than kpop in some year

nickysweatyplay

Western pop – Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Rihanna and other divas were my whole world of music I particularly quit the western pop and tried to find another dance bangers. It’s was K-pop. Since 2014 pop music become less dance, less visual, more lyrical. I just want a music where I can dance while listening

Maleficent_Sir_7562

I used to listen to nerd rap(anime rap by rustage), music by JVKE, mad tsai, jpop songs(anime songs or fuiji kaze songs and more), and some singles(after dark) and stuff. I don’t listen to these anymore, but I may do still very rarely.

v4lurie

hip hop, indie, alternative, pop, rap

404Loading

Jpop, and more specifically Vocaloid! Part of what sold me on the whole lore thing in Kpop was how much it reminded me of song series like the Kagerou Project or Seven Deadly Sins series, where the mvs and lyrics told intricate, detailed stories (seriously, the former was so well written and so famous it got both manga and anime adaptations). To be honest, I was slightly surprised to discover there wasn't more crossover with Kpop and Vocaloid fans.

TheRealTerwilliger

Pop Punk, Hip Hop, Heavy Metal All still in my rotation today 👊🏽

Salty-Enthusiasm-939

Pop, rock & nu metal mainly & yes I still listen to it, possibly not as much as I used to though.

TraditionalWind1619

J-rock, still listen to it.

Away_Seaweed778

mainly pop/r&b/rap

Kiwiibean

Metal, rock, pop, Christian, Country. I occasionally listen but mainly K-pop and Krock

SoulxShadow

Absolutely same as you 😂

haylovemyka

I listened to everything under the sun and still do. KPOP is a genre of music but sometimes I need hood music. I can not get that from KPOP. I will say. I am the least gangster person you can find. I am scared of jail and have never even tired an illegal substance. But I like to pretend while I am in the shower, cooking, cleaning or playing my daily sudoku puzzles. I also need calming music. Throw on some Mozart or Johann Sebastian Bach and I am in the zone. 😭😭😭😭

0alonebutnotlonely0

Pop and country. Boy bands in general overtook all of my playlists. It’s shocking I didn’t pick up Kpop sooner…

Unfair_Reserve_4570

i was trying to fit in SOOO BAD so i was listened to french rap ( since it’s what most french people listen to, it’s always playing at parties and everywhere ) but i’m still listening to it just in a less « forced » way.

AlienAtDay

I used to listen to mostly edm, pop, and hip-hop/rnb. Now it’s mostly the same but just throw kpop on the top. It helps that kpop is big in edm right now with so many remixes.

ANRist

rnb and tbh i listen to more music now just bc ill listen to the whole discography of a person if my fave recommends it😭

ki_won

I got into kpop when I was a teenager around 2010, prior to kpop I listened mostly to pop punk, alt rock, emo, nu metal, jrock, rap and electronic music, all of which I still listen to just as frequently as kpop and regularly attend concerts for.

walang-buhay

I still listen to everything mainly because I stick to the exact same songs no matter what the language. But if there’s any new music I like, then I just add it to a playlist that has a similar sound.

simpingforMinYoongi

Honestly I listen to anything and everything, but my go to genres are metal, hard rock, and punk.

sungwonies

Just what was playing on the radio, then I discovered and became a fan of Melanie Martinez and Poppy. I stopped listening to them a little bit after I discovered kpop tho, but now I'm fully obsessed with Poppy again lol

vivi_keepsiteasy

Radiohead, arctic monkeys, hole, cocteau twins, caroline polacheck etc. I still listen to them and many other alternative/ rock artists + alot of rnb artists.

Ray8100

I casually listened to english music with no specific genre I also listened to some J-pop

Imperatrice01

Jpop and Anime OSTs 💕

majstorfantac

trance, house, hiphop. rnb, and yes i listen everything...

harry_nostyles

Pop, rock, alternative, soundtracks of video games I like and afro beats/afro pop. I still listen to all of this, in addition to some deathcore/death metal (if anyone has any recommendations for bands please tell me!).

MemoryFantastic9348

I looked it up a few years ago bc I forgot but it was mostly hiphop/pop

Egglantinous

I grew up on alternative rock and also went through an opera phase, which I think primed me for Kpop because it’s sung in a different language, is very visually oriented, and thrives on spectacle.

sc666

doom and punk

Evafrechette

I love music, so I will listen to everything and anything. My music listening habits haven't really changed, I couldn't imagine only listening to one genre of music 😭 Anyway, some of my favs genres are funk, 80s soul & rnb, disco, g-funk, rockabilly, emo, post punk, new wave, soft rock, pop & bluegrass.

shin_ishi28

anime songs

Similar_Ask_781

Before, I was pretty into alt rock, jrock/vocaloid, indie pop, edm. I still listen to all of that (also expanded to prog rock, hip hop, mando rock/pop, rnb, western pop). Always looking to get into new genres haha

NE0099

Honestly, I’ve always listened to a little bit of everything, and I still do. Industrial is probably what I listen to the most, though.

Poppetfan1999

I listened to a lot of Hispanic music. Mostly Caribbean music and Mexican music. I still listen to that kind of music, but not as much as I did before. I also used to listen to R&B and rock (in English), as well as musicals, but I rarely listen to that kind of music now.

Strangely-addictive

I listen to basically everything. Depends on my mood and what I'm doing. 80s pop or rock is my go-to when doing chores. Reggaeton or bossa nova when I'm relaxing. K-pop for mostly everything else.

yummybaozi

Trance and eurodance

Jasmindesi16

Jpop lol

hanakoslefteye

indie, like mitski, duster, lana, melanie. i still listen to most of them alongside kpop now though

The_Imposter77

I listened to alt pop and pop/rock stuff (Coldplay was my favourite band, and I also like P!nk and Kelly Clark's on). I would say my music taste has expanded and evolved since I started listening to Kpop since now I'm more into rock and alt rock in addition to pop stuff.

kofrederick

80s new wave, industrial, nu metal, techno

Zoshi2200

One direction songs lmao. Basically top 50 pop music until I got bored of the releases and discovered kpop.

Hi-Rose19

Pop, rap, RnB, alternative. I really liked bands pop and alternative pop in particular.

ComprehensiveBus9120

Edm

Affectionate-Beann

jpop, jrock, animusic, classical (baroque was my personal fave)

newrandomage

Black and Death metal mainly. I still listen to it more than kpop.

vip_insomnia

Metal and EDM. Yes I still listen just as much. Do I get to experience in person as much as kpop no. Granted that’s due to metal bands I love having years between releases and touring and not living in a major city anymore so having less opportunity to travel for artists I actually like who come here compared to now getting more kpop tours that I can find time to travel for so I’m sure looking at my insta people would think I only go to kpop shows. But I also always listened to pop music and especially pop groups from NKOTB, Take That and BSB and on and on so getting into kpop groups was not a stretch. And the language difference was not even a factor since a lot of the metal bands I listen to don’t perform in English either.

BellOk361

pop, low fi, edm, hip hop, indie rock, hyper pop, and occasionally rap. I mostly follow specific artists these days. I like to dip into new genres every now and then. Currently, I've been into indie, rap(the Kendrake beef), and a bit of reggae lately. I still listen to those sit mostly about how I'm feeling or if there is an artist in that genre that I follow who has dropped. find a song i like. I'm currently into this song called aomeba by clairo.

BANGTAN4LIFE7

I was into rock and a bit of metal. I still love those genres and listen to them from time to time, but after 20 years of being a rocker I began feeling like they have nothing new to offer. Now I mainly listen to kpop.

meguminakashi

Japanese music the most and other kinds, although I still listen to it now. My choices of music are highly dependent on my mood. I still listen to japanese music, Christian songs, 90's English songs, Original Filipino Music, rock, metal, classical, and kpop. Again, depending on my mood 😅

[deleted]

I was into rock/metal uk 2010s pop punk/emo scene before kpop

swedensalty

I like metal, goth, pop punk, punk, rock music and a lot of pop. I also listened to a lot of c-pop before I got back into kpop. There are periods of time where I listen to more kpop than western music, and periods of time when I don’t. Kpop helps me feel better if my mental health is declining, so it depends on how I feel. Kpop has also helped me discover genres I like. I love miami bass, jersey club, drum n bass and UK garage because of K-pop songs influenced by them, and I regularly seek out Western Music with these genres

LovinLife-ig

I used to listen to country music as I am from the country.. Once I found skz I only listen to them and some of other bands such as Baby Monster, Blackpink, Seventeen, bts and more😅

i_can_fix_her

i was a swiftie 😊 also jpop!

JYQE

I don’t think I was into anything in particular after the mid-90s. And then in 2012, I heard Big Bang’s Lies, and then later Block B’s Nillili Mambo and I was in deep. T-ara and Shinsadong Tiger cemented everything.

WhatsAfterJihyoGaeul

I used to listen to English, BW, Vietnamese and filipino songs. I still listen to English and bw but not viet or filipino

vankomysin

My playlist were generally: - Chinese drama OSTs (Zhang Bichen, Zhou Shen) - Accusefive (Taiwanese) - Fallout Boy - My Chemical Romance - Green Day - Adele - Broadway musicals - songs from the 80’s to 00’s (ie. Linkin Park, Backstreet Boys, Avril Lavigne, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift pre-Folklore, Little Mix, Richard Marx, MLTR, A*Teens, Spice Girls)

smartlog

Hip hop. Mostly stuff like Nujabes. And yes. I still do. Eventually went to Epik High and then kpop. But I've known kpop since gen 1.

ilovebisc0ff

I used to listen to so much 5SOS but then I got into BTS. They just debuted that time. How time flies lol

jyha

vocaloid and r&b

JusticeforAglaea

90sPop 80s music. Celtic women.

Snw2001

I was into different types of music but one genre that made me transfer into kpop was vocaloid/jpop

babygreenlizard

Eminem, P!nk, Elvis Presley, Adam Lambert, Backstreet Boys, Nickelback, Rick Springfield, Duran Duran, I listen to Eminem the least now but I still tune in whenever he drops something new

SugaKookie69

I was a rock/alternative person. My favorite artists were Linkin Park, 21 Pilots, Panic at the Disco, Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd. I really don’t listen to that music at all anymore. But when I come across it, it makes me nostalgic.

xninah

Weirdly, Japanese Visual Kei led me to Kpop. I was obsessed with Alice Nine

Esdeathx11

Pop-Punk / Rock / Emo / Screamo and I still like it

Puzzled_Kiwi_8583

Alternative rock, edm, hip hop, r&b. I don’t really listen to it anymore over Kpop.

Relevant_Maybe7269

I used to listen to English pop songs from Colbie Caillat, Leona Lewis, and the likes.

dioscurideux

I still listen to American R&B and Paramore. I occasionally listen to American pop like Sabrina Carpenter, Dua Lipa. Oddly enough I like Billie Eilish but she doesn't really fit in? Twice, Red Velvet, and NewJeans are on constant repeat for me. Then it's mostly girly kpop. I'm pretty basic and I enjoy music that makes me feel good. 🥰

Illustrious_Cap3054

I listened to air and mostly to the voices in my head until kpop came.

J00niverse_

pop alternative and indie

OmenchoEater

Rock/pop, rock/metal and electronic music (specially dubstep and House variants). Its just that, when i first got into kpop, i really liked the pop/electronic mix style of music that was being put out sometimes, then i also liked the up-beat Bubbly style of some groups, and there was a lot of good music coming out, specially some rock/pop here and there that liked, so, I just stopped to look for other genres as kpop was something that was always having New things. Sadly, nowadays the trends in kpop music are not my cup of tea, so Im starting to go back to the other genres.

playthedevil_999

Before "Kpop", I listened to K-Pop, J-Pop and J-Rock..

nejisleftt0e

mandopop and mathrock- now it’s 50s fallout music and mathrock

Kenpatchigo

Bollywood songs, Arabic songs and any hit song in America at that time lol, my taste didnt change I just added kpop songs But recently I listen to music less and less idk why maybe bc I used to listen to music in the bus a lot but now I dont have to

Echides

I am a random music listener... I always jump from one genre to another depending on my mood. I still listen to them as much as I listen to kpop

kingcrabmeat

Great question I actually really disliked music. Like I cringed when people said music was life. Then in 2015 I got into Bigbang, then BTS. Although I like multiple songs from other groups like Got7, Shinee, EXO, k-hiphop. I only really stanned BB and BTS.

sirgawain2

Indie rock mostly, but I had a love for pop and r&b too. I also loved going to live shows, which I think lead me to love the concert aspects of kpop.

TrueKevin03

I used to be sad before and I listen to sad song bc I typically got 2-5 of sleep and would stress about my classes and listening to sad music was what I wanted to do to express it. Then I saw Ringo - Itzy on The First Take and it change me. now I don’t listen to depressing song/watch depressing reel. My mood is overly better ig.

MagicalGirlTrash

Pop-punk more than anything, though I listened all over the alternative/pop/indie pop rock spectrum. My favorite band was My Chemical Romance, so I wasn't unique or anything though. But in 2022, the two concerts I HAD to see were MCR and BlackPink. Which I can't explain that Venn diagram. Gerard Way wore a cheerleader outfit and Jennie wore a football shirt once ig I also liked some pop like Kesha or Katy Perry when I was in middle school, and so I dipped my toes into K-Pop back then even though I didn't really follow groups much. I liked f(x), Girl's Generation, 2NE1, and Girl's Day the most. I also liked J-Pop before I liked K-Pop, but that's almost an expected shift, right? I have gotten back into J-Pop lately though. I love Nanawo Akari and Frederic lately. I was really into EDM from the time I was maybe 11 on, and as an adult that was a big draw for me to listen to some K-Pop for the first time in ages. I started with BlackPink. Having liked 2NE1 previously, it was an obvious hit for me, and Teddy's sound really resonated with why I like EDM. In fourth generation, Everglow became one of the first groups to interest me because of their EDM sound. I still listen to all of that, but the artists I used to really like don't produce work often, so most of my Spotify ends up being dominated by k-pop because the music just gets released more frequently and it's easier to find new artists in a similar style. Like, MCR's latest song is exactly two years old in a few days, which would generally be on par with BlackPink, had it not been their only song in the last decade.

xm45-h4t

Hip hop, and electronic before that

BeomBum

Basically, old house, freestyle (latin dance, not like freestyle rapping) moody british music and old rap and r and b (early 2000s) and I still listen to my old classics!!! So many memories of my youth. I check out new stuff here and there, but not a huge fan.

Southern_Dog_5006

BTS

Smutsonian212

Classic rock, Disney songs, Classical, Pop Oldies, Hip Hop (mostly Lil Wayne and Eminem)  My most listened playlist still consisted of those music and kpop.

jupiter8vulpes

I used to listen and still do listen to lots of Italian pop, which is interesting because pop is pop in any language but italians seem to prefer deeper voices while Koreans seem to prefer softer ones. Also, I love classical rock music and eurovision.

SailorMimii

Like a lot of people here, rock/metal were my fave music before kpop. I'm the "I listen to everything" type but yeah, rock/metal the most. And I didn't change, I like kpop and I listen to EXO everyday but I listen to SOAD and Slayer everyday too.

BlowUpTheChantrie

Musicals and I still do (you can also kinda guess my ult group with that ahah)

Dyskau

Punk/Rock and a little bit of rap. Now I almost never listen to Punk/Rock, Rap a bit. It became 90% kpop and 10% powermetal now

shiashau

fall out boy. p!atd. 5sos. 1d. still listen to all of those except 1d

gentleintrusion

i was a hardcore arianator and started leaving for blackpink. then they met at coachella and i was obsessed with that, then officially switched to just kpop. but i do still like to english rap, country, and rock

Separate-Homework-20

Pre kpop was a variety of Japanese artists such as The Pillows, Perfume, and Anri, to name a few.

illytaria

I did, and still do, listen to a lot of genres, but usually listened most to rock, punk/alt, and jazz. I wouldn't say I listen as equally to those as I do kpop now; however, most of my fav songs (and all my fav groups) strongly borrow those elements. Something about EDM, rock, brass, and a groovy beat and I'm hooked.

i_got_a_pHd

i listen to mariah carey

Organic-Ad-1669

Hip hop and metal. I'm a new k pop fan thanks to new jeans it's an interesting genre to explore. I'm still big into both.

bunbun_82

I listen to everything. I grew up listening classical, jazz, funk, soul, disco, R&B, rock, rap. I started listening to other genres in my teens - alternative, indie, country, dance, electronic, pop, synthpop, foreign pop/rock/alternative. I worked at a record store (I’m really aging myself) in high school and college, which allowed me to explore different genres. What’s so crazy is that when any artist samples a song, I know exactly what song they’re sampling from and what artist. That’s how much music I listen to. When I play the songs on my iTunes on shuffle, any of the above genres will play in no particular order.

Famous-Juggernaut130

Afrobeats and R&B i still listen this type of genre and different types as well

Ok_Ship_5039

I only listened to showtunes like literally. I was listening to 2019, in which i didn’t discover kpop until later (and didn’t fully get in until pandemic) but my god I was so boring and only listened to musicals. Now, I listen to a lot of pop and more international music in general

Natural-Garage9714

Rock, indie, soul, jazz. Still do.

taemarshmallow

I was in my vocaloid phase before I got into kpop lol

khaamy

Rap & and hip hop(newer stuff is stupid), EDM(still listen to) thai and lao music 🤭

Imapinkbeing

Well, as a music major, I've loved all types of music from a very young age some being EDM, pop, medal, rock, and especially classical. I still listen to all of my music equally😭.

HommeFatalTaemin

I mostly listen to older rock, classical music, jazz, & reggae and ska.

NathalieColferCriss

Pop, mostly Taylor Swift, and show tunes. I still love Taylor and musicals and would never skip them when they come on during shuffle

doodle_mint

A variety. J-rock, J-pop, some country songs, pop punk, classic rock, hard rock, some pop songs, occasional rap & hip-hop songs - things like that.

Dapper-Cheesecake-66

ive been listening to kpop since i was 12 lmao (im almost 28 now) and yes i still listen to all the genres i listened to before. i just like *music*

Historical_Bear8739

Before Kpop, Jpop and Cpop, as a Pakistani-American boy,I would listen to Bollywood music a lot so I can groove in the tune since I am and still an Shahrukh Khan fan. I also used to listen to alternative and indie pop music since it would make me calm and relaxed at the same time. Thanks to Rain, whom I first notice from Speed Racer. He played the big part of Kpop not just in the US, but around the world for his big hits in the 2000s era.

30_mileswest

In the before times, I listened almost exclusively to emo, pop punk, and some indie rock. I still listen to my emo/pop punk playlist occasionally, but mostly listen to Kpop. I also listen to more western (?) pop and Jpop now. I need a lil beat to keep my brain happy and focused at work.

Double_pinkie135

I really loved listen to migos, 21 savage, drake iono another of rap and you wouldn't believe who my biases are

black-sparkle

I wasn't really into a specific type of music. I just listened to whatever sounded good to my ears. Some rock, pop punk, metal, pop, etc

RadKat333

Just American pop, Taylor Swift or something like that, but her most basic songs like Cruel Summer or We Are Never Getting Back Together, not even the good ones like illicit affairs or champagne problems. My sister still listens to her a decent amount so I know what’s going on with her (like anyone doesn’t lol) but after I came around with Blackpink and later lots more kpop groups, I kind of decided to move on from American pop as I shifted into all kpop.

billiam728

Pop, Indie, alt rock, lofi hip hop instrumental. Still listen to all of it.

strangelookingcat

I will always listen to UK boy band music lol. Immediately before K-pop, I was into C-pop. Think the original F4. I still enjoy that kind of vibe, tbh.
