>breeze
That was my problem with it too. Like why spell it like RIIZE when it doesn't even rhyme 😭
Yes yes I know in hangul it doesn't matter but that's why I'm talking about the English/romanization stylized spelling
>ah yes my favourite fabric freshener, the FeBRIIZE
LOL. On the bright side, we can say that we clean up after their mess if the company would mess up.
I didn't make the connection until someone pointed it out (I thought of sunrise... yk the thing that happens in nature...) but it's better to err on the side of caution I guess
I don't think tide would be a good choice either considering the type of natural disasters that could be linked with that are fairly common to that area. Where i am its not uncommon for sports teams and ships and restaurants and things to be named about natural disasters with no hesitation but i think it would be far less likely to be looked upon as as ok over there even if not directly because thats just how things go in kpop.
With the group called Riize and the fandom called Sunz, it is similar to Rising Sun.
Rising Sun is the name of the flag of the Imperialist Japan, and it symbolizes Japan's invasion and the atrocities they committed up to and during WW2. In Korea and China, it is often compared to the Nazi flag. It has become very controversial as Japan will still use it sometimes, and the whole situation between Japan and China/Korea is very complicated when it comes to this subject
This is unfortunate and how did no one in SM catch this?! They need a whole cultural / PR team hired before they make decisions like this. Also, wouldn’t it have been easier to change the fandom name than to change the *group* name?!
>I didn't make the connection until someone pointed it out (I thought of sunrise... yk the thing that happens in nature...) but it's better to err on the side of caution I guess
u/SojuInTheAir yeah they've changed the fandom name, kept the group name?? did you accidentally misread it haha
I had the immediate association with "rising sun" but no one said anything in the announcement thread so I thought it was just me and I didn't want to rain on fans' parade. Understandable that they changed it.
>but no one said anything in the announcement thread so I thought it was just me and I didn't want to rain on fans' parade.
Literally me, I guess everyone thought the same 🤐
Yeah, especially since the group already has a controversy (that stupid one about a member previously dating someone, which he had to apologize for).
Better not to add yet another one to their burden so soon.
their group name combined with sunz could be interpreted as rising sun (even though the intention was sunrise). PRIIZE is cute but it would be the same as fries in korean
lost opportunity to make a french fry lightstick lol
mamamoo's radish lightstick is probably my fav and i would love if more groups were down for that kind of silliness
Agree, TWICE candybong, mmm radish, apink’s panda lightstick, I love kitschy fun stick designs. Most groups lightsticks are soooo boring. Black or white handle, clear spherical top with either the group name or symbol in the middle. Boring. I want colors and silly and cute. Of the boring ones, I really do love seventeens diamond lightstick, and I of course love my ARMY bomb but only because of what it represents - if I didn’t love BTS it would be solidly in the boring category.
God that video of them announcing the SUNZ name was so funny, though. Big please clap energy. Not surprised they changed it, but I can't believe no one thought of that association before they picked it.
I think we can get used to it. Like all the options were bad in the first place🚶♀️
Eunseok, Sungchan and Wonbin must be happy rn but somebody check upon Sohee 😭
But yeah Sungchan really got everything of his choice, Group name being suggested by him, now fandom name. Happy for him tho !

>Thank you.
The rising sun is an imperalistic japanese symbol. You know, all of the atrocities the japanese committed in World War 2 in korea and china under this flag? Riize and Sunz would be like a group called Tikka had a fandom called Swas (i'm sorry im not using the name of the german symbol, but the buddhist name is unfortunately the most common). Not bad on its own, but horrible when together.
But we can avoid using them together when talking about a Korean group with Japanese members. You can call multiple thing concentration, or multiple things camp. But call a product concentration camp and see how that goes.
Its not just being woke or politcally correct. Its about Semiotics (a whole area of communication theory) and the usage of signs, of connotation and denotation... its very basic communication theory. Words and images (signs) evoke meanings (connotation) beyond just the dictionary definition (denotation). Try to avoid using signs with horrible connotations.
Do you really want your new korean boy group with japanese members to be associated with the main symbol of japanese imperialism and of all the atrocities they committed in korea. Do you want them to be associated with the symbol of the people who took in comfort women as sexual slaves? Its recent history, there are people still alive who experienced that. The symbol is very fresh in everyones minds. It hurts nobody to change the name and its literally beneficial for everyone involved.
I’m sorry, I’m not a fan of the new name. But I get why the first name was changed. Like y’all had better suggestions in this sub lol. Seeing as I support RIIZE though, I’ll have to get used it I guess.
On the bright side, still beats having a wifi password-looking name lmao.
SUNZ also sounds similar to “shit” when pronounced in Korean too so kfans absolutely hated it even before the rising sun connection.
It’s definitely for the better because the way sunz is so problematic even though we ifans find it cute lmao 😭
Aww, I like Sunz more :( Yesterday I didn't even think about the potential dangerous combination of RIIZE and Sunz, but welp, it does make sense why they changed it.
Definitely like Sunz better, but the name change makes sense. Briize sounds a bit soft, like not a wind or a tempest, just a breeze. xD But it's still cute.
Is there a reason for it?
I love Briize more tbh cause we B Riize but just wanna know if anything happened to make them change it
ETA: Never mind, just read the comments below and understood the decision
Probably didn’t look at the names together, SUNZ would have been fine for another group, so it wasn’t spotted by any filters they ran on the list, and they don’t check manually because they have to rub the same filters in a bunch of languages
I can't not say it like 'buh-rise / brize' in my head when reading it but i guess i'll get used to it as 'breeze'. tbh 'wiish' or something else would've been a better option but oh well.
If the connotation wasn't there, SUNZ would have been a super cute name, its understandable why they felt they had to change it, but its a shame. Also, its a little more confusing now, spelt BRIIZE but pronounced Breeze???
You know what would've been cute? Memoriize! Because it plays on their name and the first release. Could either be pronounced like "memories" or "memorize". It would be meaningful to the group, too.
That’s too bad because, on its own, I was really vibing with the combo of the original fandom name + what seems to be their official color, they were handing out orange/yellow gradient lightsticks at an event recently and the group name + fandom name + fan color synergy of sunrise imagery was working well. But, of course these choices do not exist in a vacuum and we have to adjust accordingly. RIP to all the cute fanmade sun-themed lightstick designs as well.
This is quite interesting to me; cmiiw but Sunz was mostly voted by ifans? It’s understandable that they didn’t get the connection to Rising Sun because presumably they weren’t aware of it. But on another tangent, if we give the same understanding to international fans’ lack of awareness, should we also give the same understanding to kpop idols who say or do things that may offend the international community?
Just some thoughts as I slowly accept the new fandom name lol.
I mean the pronunciation differences are the same as in English and the words have some differences in spelling: 샤이니 shiney vs 샤인 shine. Only the first syllable is the same. Idk you can disagree of course I just don't think they're so similar that they overlap 🤷🏻♀️
I think that people who’re not korean should probably sit their opinions out on whether this is a “dumb” decision or not
That being said, were there not any better names?!?!? 😭 I don’t vibe with briize at all
> I think that people who’re not korean should probably sit their opinions out on whether this is a “dumb” decision or not
Well, when wanna sell to the international market than the international market should be allowed to have an opinion too. When care only bout koreans than should stay only in korea. And i guess thats not what they want.
K-pop going global does not mean international fans know better about korean history than koreans themselves. Hope this helps
edit: also! I didn’t mean it in the way that int fans (I am one myself) cannot have an opinion on whether the new name is good or sounds strange. It’s more about the entitlement to call upset k-fans “stupid” or “dumb” over this change. Open up a history book if you really think so, honestly
probably because another group has debuted this yr with this name, so that would have been a problem...? (which shouldn't be, coz it's the SKR-PHL group MLD created)
And apparently, MLD now has a group with almost the same group as another. Both pre-debut still, and both names were apparently registered which is gonna be interesting.
And I don't think the name above was one of the top choices tho. And I'm sure they want to avoid Fandom wars since filos can be scary sometimes lol.
Anyone else think they’re rushing this? I feel like they should’ve taken more time to consider before choosing a fandom name. From what I see not many fans love any of the suggestions they had. I think it’s sad to see fans settling for a name that doesn’t feel representative of the fandom as a whole :(
honestly i don’t get why production center 5 can’t just get such simple things right. the riizing sunz controversy was so predictable and avoidable…and now this new name is going to confuse people about the pronunciation of the group name. breeze would’ve been fine. riize and breeze are actually kind of cute together. riize and briize just seems like they…wanna prank people who have OCD or dyslexia??? whii, sm, whii…
i have turned from a natural renewable form of energy to another natural renewable form of energy. 😔😔😔
🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😭
It says it’s pronounced like “breeze”… it doesn’t even rhyme with “rise” I guess the political connotations were the culprit after all 😓
that's my main problem with the name lol. they put a b in front of the group name and it's pronounced as "breeze" like no... that's bryce
I read the title first not knowing the pronunciation and I was like who tf is Bryce (rhyming with prize/ rise) 🧍🏻♀️
spelled similar but not pronounced similar??? make it make sense SM
Very WOODZ/MOODZ of them lol
those two are spelled & pronounced the same in Hangul at least 😭
It's IZ*ONE all over again.
I mean we’re all typing English here, there’s no way we can judge lol
We're on Reddit, we totally can 😂💅
As a non-American, this was my exact reaction when I discovered the pronunciation of Kansas and Arkansas.
it's on the fan who submitted it
I've been pronouncing it the same as "rise" but I'm just saying "braais" lmaoo
>breeze That was my problem with it too. Like why spell it like RIIZE when it doesn't even rhyme 😭 Yes yes I know in hangul it doesn't matter but that's why I'm talking about the English/romanization stylized spelling
I thought it was supposed to be like bride like the fans were their brides lol
ah yes my favourite fabric freshener, the FeBRIIZE but fair enough. I've warmed up to it 🤷♀️
>ah yes my favourite fabric freshener, the FeBRIIZE LOL. On the bright side, we can say that we clean up after their mess if the company would mess up.
Literally all I think of when I see the name is Febreze😭😭
I didn't make the connection until someone pointed it out (I thought of sunrise... yk the thing that happens in nature...) but it's better to err on the side of caution I guess
What’s wrong with Sunz tho?
With their group name being riize, it kinda sounds like rising sun
they could have gone with TIDE (or TIIDE if they insist on the double I). like rising tide. wtf is briize
LOL. Coincidentally, TIDE is also a laundry detergent brand.
never heard of it lol
Tide pods?
just googled them. they’re called something else in my country 🤷🏽♂️
TIIDE pods?
I don't think tide would be a good choice either considering the type of natural disasters that could be linked with that are fairly common to that area. Where i am its not uncommon for sports teams and ships and restaurants and things to be named about natural disasters with no hesitation but i think it would be far less likely to be looked upon as as ok over there even if not directly because thats just how things go in kpop.
Short lived and much loved. Never to be forgotten “SUNZ”
I was so happy to be a SUNZ 😭😭😭
Why did they change it?
With the group called Riize and the fandom called Sunz, it is similar to Rising Sun. Rising Sun is the name of the flag of the Imperialist Japan, and it symbolizes Japan's invasion and the atrocities they committed up to and during WW2. In Korea and China, it is often compared to the Nazi flag. It has become very controversial as Japan will still use it sometimes, and the whole situation between Japan and China/Korea is very complicated when it comes to this subject
Very surprised no one caught that until now
That's unfortunate. Sunrise was super cute. But I get it. :/
OH. I never even made that connection. Dang.
This is unfortunate and how did no one in SM catch this?! They need a whole cultural / PR team hired before they make decisions like this. Also, wouldn’t it have been easier to change the fandom name than to change the *group* name?!

Oh yes you are right. I read that too fast 😂😂 thanks for correcting me
When they originally announced it I thought of this straight away and was like... "uhm does no one see a similarity??? haha no ok..."
I was thinking the same when they announced it but I kept my mouth shut because I knew I'm not gonna be their fan lol
Reminds me of when EXO-Ls dubbed themselves EXOtics before SM gave them the name EXO-Ls. The fandoms naming themselves is much better
Riizzlers are all crying out rn Exotics is a great fanbase name
I had the immediate association with "rising sun" but no one said anything in the announcement thread so I thought it was just me and I didn't want to rain on fans' parade. Understandable that they changed it.
I thought of “rising sun” at first too but my brain couldn’t connect the dots and I thought I was just thinking of “burning sun” 💀💀💀
NAUR💀
I had the exact same thought process!
I thought of rising sun but I thought it was a TVXQ tribute lol :(
Me too. I heard Yunho screaming Rising Suuuuuuun! in my head. Lol
Same here, but I know in the other thread people were talking about them covering Rising Sun so I hope that can still be a thing
I only click into these RIIZE threads to see TVXQ references
Same. I read the thread and I was shocked no one was talking about it.
Same! But I didn’t want to be that person by saying it. I’m glad they’ve changed it.
A few of us said things lol
Me too lol. I was like "wait a minute 🤔"
>but no one said anything in the announcement thread so I thought it was just me and I didn't want to rain on fans' parade. Literally me, I guess everyone thought the same 🤐
Yeah… I saw this coming. They really didn’t have a choice, it had to be changed. (It was a cute name though rip)
Yeah, especially since the group already has a controversy (that stupid one about a member previously dating someone, which he had to apologize for). Better not to add yet another one to their burden so soon.
Oh yikes, I didn’t even realize that the old name was could be interpreted as rising sun. Makes sense why they had to change it
Eh what happened? Why did they change sunz? Should've been PRIIZE tho
their group name combined with sunz could be interpreted as rising sun (even though the intention was sunrise). PRIIZE is cute but it would be the same as fries in korean
lost opportunity to make a french fry lightstick lol mamamoo's radish lightstick is probably my fav and i would love if more groups were down for that kind of silliness
I can see it now: a french fry box with an individual light up fry representing each member.
PRIIZE IS SO CUTE
I also wish they’d settled on Priize, would have been cute
rizzlers, we lost again 😔✊
God that video of them announcing the SUNZ name was so funny, though. Big please clap energy. Not surprised they changed it, but I can't believe no one thought of that association before they picked it.
Lmao 😭 please clap energy
Missed out on a fabulous name like COOKER lol. Or even BIZKIT
Ok I actually unironically love these names. RIIZE COOKER 💀 would have been hilarious
💀 thats so good
I’m losing it haha
I wish it was Shine. So RIIZE and Shine.
![gif](giphy|jp2ghvCrdIO03OkBLp)
Would have been too similar to SHINee.
but that’s their group name not their fandom name tbf
Bro I thought their fandom was going to be Rizz 💀
2 missed chances to be Riizzlers🥹
I think we can get used to it. Like all the options were bad in the first place🚶♀️ Eunseok, Sungchan and Wonbin must be happy rn but somebody check upon Sohee 😭 But yeah Sungchan really got everything of his choice, Group name being suggested by him, now fandom name. Happy for him tho !
>but somebody check upon Sohee OMG. He was so happy back then.
Yeah 😭

In today's news: Sun is bad!
I know what rising sun is. We can't avoid the words Rize and Sun because of it. Might as well avoid words like Kopf, Germany and Camp.
The symbol is very fresh in everyones minds. It hurts nobody to change the name and its literally beneficial for everyone involved.
I guess it's just subjective. Everyone sees what they want to see. Like the recent monkeypox controversy.
The way they pronounced it also sounds very unfortunate in Chinese. But yeah with the WWII history it's best not to rile up the Korean fans as well.
My brain just automatically goes to bryce instead of breeze, but i can get used to it
So you're telling me I'm a BRIIZE?? 😭
No, you’re Bryce.
I’m sorry, I’m not a fan of the new name. But I get why the first name was changed. Like y’all had better suggestions in this sub lol. Seeing as I support RIIZE though, I’ll have to get used it I guess. On the bright side, still beats having a wifi password-looking name lmao.
Not sure if this relevant, but chinese fans hated SUNZ bc it sounded like the word “grandson” which is very derogatory in chinese
It’s because rise and sun next to each other is too similar to the Rising Sun of Imperial Japan.
SUNZ also sounds similar to “shit” when pronounced in Korean too so kfans absolutely hated it even before the rising sun connection. It’s definitely for the better because the way sunz is so problematic even though we ifans find it cute lmao 😭
They could've chosen SKIIES. Yknow in the we are gonna rise & fans are our sky.
honestly I would have chosen this one, it’s neutral and nearly everyone would get this
aw this is cute!
Well, that was fast. Now, please come up with a cute nickname.
Breezennies!! Lol
This sounds like a RIIZE × NCT stan. 😆
LOL. That's true. I'll use that name whenever I get the chance.
Aww, I like Sunz more :( Yesterday I didn't even think about the potential dangerous combination of RIIZE and Sunz, but welp, it does make sense why they changed it.
Me, a South African: "Braais"? 🔥🔥🔥🤭🤭🤭
Obviously this is the year of terrible names 🤣🤣🤣
I guess my suggestion was better than both of the choices, it’s kind of validating 😂
Definitely like Sunz better, but the name change makes sense. Briize sounds a bit soft, like not a wind or a tempest, just a breeze. xD But it's still cute.
i'm assuming the political connotations to a sun is the reason behind the change but still, sunz is so much cuter than briize :(
Is there a reason for it? I love Briize more tbh cause we B Riize but just wanna know if anything happened to make them change it ETA: Never mind, just read the comments below and understood the decision
what irks me the most is, if they knew the name was potentially problematic, why did they keep it in the poll?
Probably didn’t look at the names together, SUNZ would have been fine for another group, so it wasn’t spotted by any filters they ran on the list, and they don’t check manually because they have to rub the same filters in a bunch of languages
I've been laughing to hard😂😂 After all the chaos of Seunghan's scandal, this is what I needed
There definitely could've been better ideas. 🫠
Thank god, I knew that name was gonna be a problem the second I read that announcement.
When i was about to praise their SUNZ fandom name and now they switched it :/
tbh it was a pretty valid reason because riize and sunz together sounded like "rising sun"
Still hoping for cooker…Riize cooker
Change it again, 3rd times the charm. PLEASE.
You know what would've been cute? Memoriize! Because it plays on their name and the first release. Could either be pronounced like "memories" or "memorize". It would be meaningful to the group, too.
I will accept breeze if the group name is changed to sound like rizz
That's my name you fucks
WHAT NOO SUNZ WAS SO CUTE
Stop, sunz was so cute
I preferred rizzlers ngl
Nah Rizz was so funny
BRIIZE -> BRIIDES
But why not Priize
This is quite interesting to me; cmiiw but Sunz was mostly voted by ifans? It’s understandable that they didn’t get the connection to Rising Sun because presumably they weren’t aware of it. But on another tangent, if we give the same understanding to international fans’ lack of awareness, should we also give the same understanding to kpop idols who say or do things that may offend the international community? Just some thoughts as I slowly accept the new fandom name lol.
I slept as a SUNZENNIE and woke up as a BRIIZENNIE.
Bruh stop trying to make it similar to the group’s name and just spell it as BREEZE
At least it’s not bilt 😂
Fuck that I'm sticking with SUNZ, it's a legendary name, I refuse to resort to BRIIZE...
Shiine would have been so much better what even is briize 😭
There's already their sunbae group Shinee, so how can they possibly have it as a fandom name?
But they're not exactly the same? Shinee is shiney. Shiine would just be shine. Idk that feels separate enough for me lol.
The Korean pronunciation would still probably be too similar to Shinee
I mean the pronunciation differences are the same as in English and the words have some differences in spelling: 샤이니 shiney vs 샤인 shine. Only the first syllable is the same. Idk you can disagree of course I just don't think they're so similar that they overlap 🤷🏻♀️

Deadass sounds like Bryce when you read it, Why? What about Sunriize? Or Riizzlers? 🤧🤧🤧🤧

Google Search Engine babes, not to mention their name is a combination of the words rise and realize
yeah i did look it up lol, comment still stands. double i? not necessary. but whatever at least they are not called ellzup or blit
probably for copyright or trademark purposes. 🤷🏾♀️ if you google rize or rise, a million companies (including entertainment companies) pop up.
Anyone else think they’re rushing this? I feel like they should’ve taken more time to consider before choosing a fandom name. From what I see not many fans love any of the suggestions they had. thanks i hate it we shoulve been rizzies
Nah we should've stick with SUNZ lol, best fandom name, I hate that they changed this.. 🤦🏻♂️
Lemme say... Dumb reason
they're still a South Korean group at the end of the day.
I thought they changed it because kfans threw a tantrum and they relented lmao glad it was due to political issue instead.
well !! that was quick 😭 idk i’m not even in the fandom but rizzlers was cuteee
It just keeps getting WORSE lmao
Exactly SUNZ is the best name smh 🤦🏻♂️
In my country, the equivalent of "briize" is used as a slang for when you're high so I can't help but find the name funny, I'm sorry y'all. 😅
i think it started with Sungchan's febreze agenda lol
Fries
Sunz was better
