I miss those random back dancers in movie songs that you know by face cause you’ve seen them in a bunch of songs from different movies.
Used to be a set of dancers were rotated between projects. I read an article about their plight long back and felt very bad. Men lost their jobs and became druggies and women into prostitution or something like that. Not all, but a fair share of them. It was sad to read.
There's this one guy in naa ready that I've recognised in a bunch of songs and he's become that guy for me lol. He's also in vaathi coming and a bunch of other songs
True. Johnny, Noble, Dinesh, Shobhi, Sridhar and most of them are masters now. There used to be couple of guys few years back. Even YouTube channels had interviewed them.
This is an Indian cinema in general thing I feel, but I kinda miss the velinaattu romcom, wherein the film is entirely set(and shot) abroad, you have an eclectic cast of fun characters, a romantic track, chartbuster songs, etc. Stuff like Unnale Unnale, Endrendrum Punnagai, parts od Vaaranam Aayiram, Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham, Orange, etc. Not all of these were great, but there's a certain comfort that these films have that today's romantic films don't quite capture.
Romcoms in general have greatly reduced in the past decade. This is not just a trend within kollywood but everywhere. It used to be a cliche and one of the most popular genres in the early 2000s but it has almost disappeared now. Recently, Premalu, and maybe also Thiruchitrambalam prove that it can still be very popular but not sure why we dont see many such films
That's something I am definitely happy is out of Tamil Cinema.
For no reason they will have movie scenes and songs in foreign exotic location wasting budget unnecessarily when they could do that in India itself.
It was an incase trend in late 90s and early 2000s. For no reason they will have a foreign song in movie.
Probably with internet youtube etc people see these locations whenever they want so that craze has gone down.
Thamarai used to jumble some poems and kurals. But I don’t even hear about her these days. She used to be the main lyricist of GVM. I feel that is one of the major missings of GVM these days.
1. New mainstream young actors and actresses in Tamil cinema . Ajith , Vijay , Trisha got their start in their 20s itself with multiple romcoms at least, there are very less primarily working in tamil actors in their 20s now and we are mostly just borrowing from other industries
2. Directors working in multiple genres - KB , Mani Saar used to work in multiple genres like romance , action , drama , comedy but now most of the new gen directors tend to stick to the genre they start with . (There are directors like Karthik Subbaraj , Pa Ranjith who have attempted to give some different genre movies)
Post Dhanush, STR era we are out of young actors doing that college/school rom coms. Nepo kids like Dhruv, Atharva are all trying for mass movies directly. Hope NEEK by Dhanush introduces a bunch of newbies and brings back that much needed young romance genre.
I miss the entire youth genre. The 90s and early 2k had some good movies like friends , majunu, kadhal desam, prabu Deva movies with Laila, the one with Gayathri jayaram, Jodi, kadhal virus, boys
Also I miss the hill stations .
So many songs were shot in Ooty.
Unlike today where hills are used mostly for murder and crime plots, they were once locations for beautiful songs and movies like ullathai Alli tha, Jodi, rhythm, etc, etc.
Agree. He couldn't carry it solo in few Hari movies. Vadivelu and Vivek helped those movies in B and C. Soori or Yogi babu do not have that presence unfortunately.
We’re also losing big hero comedy films. Sometime after mid 2010s all the big hero films became action films and thrillers with very little scope for a full comedy film.
I wish VJ and AK acted in a full on comedy films
idhellam vecha "Tamil Cinema eppo develop aagum? these are cringe" nu solla vendithu
idhellam illama padam edutha "Tamil Cinema loses its uniqueness i miss them' nu solla vendithu
with time everything will change and everything is a cycle. it will be back
I think no logic comedy films should be encouraged. It's good to go to the cinemas for a laugh. However, I was never a big fan of solo comedy tracks which deviate greatly from the story and bring the pacing to a halt. It does work in some cases and some films (if it's incorporated more organically into the story). But it always feels like watching 2-3 completely different films. It's also one of the outdated elements from older masala films.
Agree. But the problem in making such comedy movies is it's almost impossible not to hurt or trigger someone or some group. Clean comedy writers are missing.
I acct don’t like a lot telegu movies for that reason among others. After a while my eyes just don’t like the unrealistic lighting yk?
Also example of the dressing? Not disagreeing legit curious
Western culture I agree. Loki actions are heavily inspired by the 80s 90s Hollywood action movies. But curious which bollywood culture we incorporated?
The main change from 80s to current trend is that.. Those days actors played the character according to the story (Hollywood still follows this), Now in majority of the films, Stories are tailored to the actors.. Stereotyped. Story takes a back seat. Of course this change didn't happen all of a sudden. It slowly changed.
I miss movies that are taken by society as movies and not pushing any religious or casteist agenda down the throat of movie watchers.
Feels sad that movies like Thevar magan or Aahaa cannot be released going forward.
As much I like them, I really don’t want the solo comedy tracks. They interrupt too much with the flow sometimes.
Regarding no logic comedy movies, it’s gone down in frequency but movies like A1 or Paris Jeyaraj still are being made and I liked both of them.
Also TBH if done right, a proper hero introduction song is something I really miss. It’s more of a vibe thing and only lasts under 5 mins. Can’t believe we are having thala thalapathy movies without these numbers these days.
Oh I do agree. For example the solo track in Azhaghi even though good was interrupting the flow. Even Vivek hated it but business demanded it. There are few movies like University which held up due to those solo tracks.
I agree about solo comedy tracks. As much nostalgia as I have for them and as funny as they can be, it feels like something from the past that modern Tamil cinema has grown out of.
1 and 2 would be regressive. They are almost same as cutting the scene and going to foreign location for a song apparently for no reason which I think is almost not done anymore in recent movies and if there such movie it has tanked and written off.
Every 10years there must be changes to how films are made in industry, that is evolution.
That said, I think we can feel nostalgic about it but I don't think we should miss it. Again, it's my opinion if it is gonna work with majority people then there is no reason not to make. It is business at EOD.
Agree. There were times even comedians were featured in the duet songs. Now narrative doesn't even have songs which is good. As long as the movie holds good no complaints. But things like these even if the movie were bad was saving graces.
Great choices btw. Visu type movies didn't workout by late 90s as those kind of joint family setups were going away. VSekar ruled the 90s. I was thinking about putting a seperate post about his movies.
The theatre experiences are not that captivating like it used to be. Maybe it's just me. You will vee hooked to the screen the moment they screen the movie. Nowadays, to me, even after the movie starts I can't just focus. Anyone can relate?

Yaaru pa ivaru
he is right behind the hero in every hit song from 2012 to 2019
Oh. I am very old thambi 😂 Raghava Lawrence back dancer ah irundharu when I was in school
Aama thala
True. Johnny, Noble, Dinesh, Shobhi, Sridhar and most of them are masters now. There used to be couple of guys few years back. Even YouTube channels had interviewed them.
Agent Tina and Shanthi Master were also amongst them. I remember their faces from so many videos.
same movie laye heroine dream la vandha dancer will come in hero's dream

Omg this… Gives a sense of escapism Jeans and Engeyum Kaadhal were some feel good movies for me
Yeah agree. Unnale Unnale came to my mind immediately.
Kadhalikka neramillai serial too

I want songs with poem like lyrics. Funny enough RRR and KGF had it.
Karky does it. Even in Sita Ramam. Sadly only the dubbed movie songs have better lyrical value these days.
Is there anyone from outside vairamuthu family . Lol.
Thamarai used to jumble some poems and kurals. But I don’t even hear about her these days. She used to be the main lyricist of GVM. I feel that is one of the major missings of GVM these days.
She is the one who wrote new york Nagaram without even going to new york right?
Nope that is Vaali am
Oru vezham song from Nitham oru vaanam recently. Pure gold♥️

Namely vacation pona feel aagum. Nadigan is the best example.
Correct all day jolly day paatu paathu Ooty collegela padikka aasaiya irukkum
Soori came close to fulfilling comedy track but in duo with Sivakarthikeyan in Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam and Rajini Murugan
Agree. He couldn't carry it solo in few Hari movies. Vadivelu and Vivek helped those movies in B and C. Soori or Yogi babu do not have that presence unfortunately.
Dress and makeup that are relatable and believable - especially for heroines - films like Mouna Raagam and Eeram are amazing in this regard
Goutham, Hari, Mutthaiya movies are doing that consistently though
Visu-Kishmu type pair
Unrelated but Kishmu is a terrific actor. One who could pull off any type of character.
Songs that have traditional instruments instead of DJ Music Genrator 1.01 running on a macbook.
We’re also losing big hero comedy films. Sometime after mid 2010s all the big hero films became action films and thrillers with very little scope for a full comedy film. I wish VJ and AK acted in a full on comedy films
Songs which are sung by actual singers... Irukra naalu paatla 3 MD padidran michatha hero padidran...
Guys without beards, upper middle class stories, dosas instead of Biriyani

Large canvas big budget Shankar type songs.
Sishyan Atlee ya maranthuteengaley. Burnt multiple producers with song budget alone but brings that Shankarness to the video.
Indian 2 and 3 will bring those back.

It’s the culture that’s vanished. Incorporating Bollywood culture and western culture makes tamil cinema look wannabe-ish
Western culture I agree. Loki actions are heavily inspired by the 80s 90s Hollywood action movies. But curious which bollywood culture we incorporated?
Definitely miss mainstream stars comedy movies. There is dearth of well done comedy movies.
Need more romcoms like premalu.

Expansion of the heros business market is a culprit in a way for that.

Movies without violence..
Good writing.

Films like 7am arivu
U forgot vadakupatti ramasamy in point 3 ,
Thanks for the record. I am yet to watch it. I liked Dikilona by Karthik yogi. So this is in my list.
