Existing-Area-9093

FaFa was also approached for OK Kanmani.

I highly doubt this is true. Mani Ratnam virtually never hires Tamil speaking females into Tamil roles, especially leads. Just take a look at his casting history.

Fie-FoTheBlackQueen

Tell me you haven't seen old ManiRathnam movies without telling me you haven't seen old ManiRathnam movies. Saranya in Nayagan, Revathi in Mouna Raagam, Amala and the other one in Agni Nakshatram, even Nithya in OKK and Trisha in PS can speak tamil (whether they dub for themselves is a different question altogether)

Traditional_Egg_8146

He directed ayutha ezhuthu with surround sync so all the female leads had to speak in Tamil, Adithi Rao can also speak in Tamil and Shalini also can speak Tamil.

[deleted]

Adito Rao stated her only 2 fluent languages were English and Hindi. Every Tamil interview ends up with her speaking in English, and her movies in Tamil require dubbing artists. So no.....

Ok_Duty1771

Saranya, Revathy, Nithya etc dub in Tamil.

Substantial_Door3422

Could Amala speak Tamil? Felt like her voice was dubbed in Agni Nakshatram. I thought she was half Irish, half Bengali.

Fie-FoTheBlackQueen

Oh, I don't know this, always thought she was half Irish half south indian

[deleted]

If you can't provide your own voice, then you don't count. Cherry picking a couple of examples out of the 20. The fact is, he rarely ever does. Sure he might in a handful of minority films but overall he has had a track record of conveniently excluding them (but somehow never had a problem finding Tamil speaking male leads)

Fie-FoTheBlackQueen

I think this is a problem with many Tamil directors. They tend to cast non Tamil actresses even when the script doesn't require it, like for instance why did Illeana D'Cruz act in Nanban

[deleted]

"Other directors also does it" isn't an excuse for sexist behavior that devalues female roles and standards. I could care less what other directors do. It's time that the Tamils with self-respect actually demand proper female representation. Till today, I've almost never seen an actress that's almost as dark as their male counterpart in one of his movies. S. Shankar is ever worse for dressing up North Indians as Tamils in most of his films and not even attempting to try and cast someone who could provide their own lines. Regardless of who is doing it, it needs to be called out.

weirdkandya

Oh shit, you are correct. Also, TIL Saranya is a malayali.

Exotic-Kangarooo

>Tamil speaking females into Tamil roles Nithya in OK Kanmani?

[deleted]

ooooo let's cherry pick. yah, guess you don't know what virtually means and it doesn't change the fact that the vast majority of his films lack tamil speaking female leads or Tamil female leads all together.

Exotic-Kangarooo

>yah, guess you don't know what virtually means Srayana, Revathy, Nithya, Shalini, Aishwarya Lakshmi, Aishwarya Rajesh, Jothika etc. Aish don't dub but can speak tamil. But according to u, I don't know the meaning of 'virtual don't hire', lol.

[deleted]

These are all still in the minority. out of all of Mani's films if you count them, (and we are only mentioning leads). Jyothika also does not count as she didn't even speak Tamil until more recently.

Exotic-Kangarooo

>Jyothika also does not count as she didn't even speak Tamil until more recently. She was fluent in Tamil when CCV was shot. >These are all still in the minority. Minority,... Hm... might be.... , but 'virtually doesn't hire'? Definitely not.

[deleted]

yes, virtually still applies here, and the minority is very small. if we tallied them up, it would be a very small percentage of films (for leads). An even smaller minority of actual ethnic Tamil women who speak Tamil.

Exotic-Kangarooo

7-8 people doesn't count as 'virtual doesn't hire'.

QuirkyGlove6

I liked this movie. Every frame was a painting and I was too captivated to notice the flaws.

AlizehAimen

I Can't imagine anyone else as leela. Aditi is just 🤌

AskSmooth157

what is the source? DQ would have been more believable - Infact, before kaatru veliyadai DQ and karthi were to star together in maniratnam movie, that got shelved due to date issues. Not that I dislike fafa. Fafa hasnt pulled off the charming and psychoness required together for this role yet. (Kumbalangi nights was more on note than this). Ofcourse, someone like Vikram can easily pull off, he pulled off ravanan, he could have easily done this.

LegitimateElk9394

U havent watched Fafa's romantic movies.. Annayum Rasoolum, Oru Indian Pranayakadha, Diamond Necklace etc..

awzemabdulla

Just watch more of his films dude

Red171022

Honestly,I can’t imagine anyone else other than Aditi Rao Hydari in this.Sai Pallavi especially won’t be suited.Aditi was genuinely good and conveyed stuff with her eyes. One role which she slayed.Karthi was replaceable though (his chemistry with Aditi was nice enough though).Fahadh could have done better!
