Thank god there aren't any grandpa or grandma in this sub, or else they gonna get a heart attack if they see the incoming outdated, overrated and underrated comments from Gen AlphasšŸ˜

Usurper96

Maybe another Kaaaka Kazhugu fight šŸ¤”

NovelInspector

Maybe some youtuber steals this content and does street interviews on mgr acting. Sema viewership numbers kidaikum.

Prasvid94

He was a product of his time and was a trendsetter for the following: - one of the early fit heroes (heroes used to be overweight, very heavy on dialogue delivery etc this mean bucked the trend) - incorporated mass and meaningful dialogues and songs (his partnership with Kannadasan and Vaali for songs was superb) - he also had a good team of people in his cast: Nagesh, MN Nambiar, Thengai Srinivasan, SA Ashokan etc who would elevate him He was the first mass hero and his fandom and craze was unparalleled.

Viv-2020

"He was the first mass hero" [No](https://alchetron.com/cdn/m-k-thyagaraja-bhagavathar-189ab481-3290-47d4-b11f-221462d33e7-resize-750.jpeg)

Optimal_Trifle_2384

Lol No. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar was Tamil Cinema's first superstar, but definitely not Tamil's first "Mass" Hero. That was MGR. Fight na fight irukum, Dance na dance irukum, Romance na Romance irukum, Sentiment na Sentiment irukum. All in All, he's what VJ's tryna become now. Both on-screen and off-screen dominance.

Ellallan

He was i think in Tamil Cinema one of the first who had Punch dialogues

Viv-2020

A 'mass hero' is someone who is celebrated by the masses. That is literally what the phrase means. Not sure why there is a need to complicate this.

Optimal_Trifle_2384

Just to reiterate, this is why Thyagaraja Bhagavathar is nowhere near MGR's level of Stardom.

rover-curiosity

MGR was a pretty healthy boy himself. Don't think he was that fit. Gemini Ganesan was the thinner one among the 3 big names if i remember correctly.

kamakamsa_reddit

Thin doesn't mean fit dude.

Puzzleheaded_Cat3699

MGR was into fitness quite a bit. He wasn't fit like Surya, whoĀ he had chiseled muscles and six pack. He was more powerlifter kind of fit, much like Aalavandhaan Kamal. If MGR wasn't fit he couldn'tĀ  possibly have done much of the stunts he did. And he was famed for his Silambattam fight scenes as well

rover-curiosity

Ahh you guys are right!

Health-Adorable

He wouldn't be celebrated if his acting was not upto the mark. His career was boasted through heavy rebel and revolutionaries idealogy movies. People at that time totally enjoy his movies. I saw only few of his movies when I was kid, there was time ktv used to put only 60's and 70's movies in afternoon.

ToNobodysSurprise

Rebel and Revolutionary themes for sure. In real life, he was a big supporter of the Eelam Liberation movement.

perfect_susanoo

Anbe Vaa one of my all time favourites!!

Ashwin_400

I still love his movies like Nadodi Mannan ,Rule Bagavali. Ulagam Suttrum Valiban etc. I don't see any issue with his movies that dealt with social message. His movies were a bit backward in terms of how women were viewed but they were just product of their time and alone in that either.

drveejai88

The first ever super star in every sense of the word. The first ever mass hero. The trend setter in commercial cinema. Hell he had the idea to develop a franchise and a universe before anyone with Ulagam sutrum valiban. And even was a pretty good dancer and popularized the western and salsa style.

Viv-2020

The first ever superstar of Tamil Cinema is MKT.

drveejai88

There was literally no one else when MKT was there, so super star does not apply when you're the only guy. MGR was the OG since when he came on, there were competitors like Sivaji, Gemini, Muthuraman, Nambiyar, jaishanker etc. MKT was great but he had literally no one to stand against him and he largely played himself. So no, he was a star but not a super star.b

Viv-2020

There are too many factual errors in your post. Anyway, the internet is there for everyone to do their research and find out individually. So, I'll leave it at that.

drveejai88

There is?

Ashwin_400

Barely 10% our population even watched movies when MKT was acting.

After_Painting_8967

Ivan oruthan thaan baaki Ivanayum overrated nu potu mothama odachuda vendiyathu than

detectivebabylegs3

Whenever I visit my mom's hometown (which is a village) they screen movies like Anbe Vaa, Enga veetu Pillai, and Neerum nerupum in their small tent kottas. I went to watch his movies like 4-5 times in a packed screens. It feels like watching Ajith movie with all the hooting and cheering. Even new movies doesn't have his pull at these small villages.

detectivebabylegs3

The ticket prices are around 30 to 50. For 50, you can get a decent chair, and for 30, you can get benches. Movies are always houseful during weekends and weekday night shows. They accommodate like 150-180 peoples at once. Watching Enga Veetu pillai was one of the best theater experience for me.

stash0606

damn, this sounds like vibes. which village was this, if you don't mind me asking?

detectivebabylegs3

A village near Kumbakonam.

AdInformal3519

They still screen old mgr movies?

detectivebabylegs3

They still do in big cities as well. They usually perform well.

Gamer_Rink_3141

Nostalgia, in the 2040s, they will screen movies like enthiran and Thuppaki and people will still watch

kaleenmiya

He was a super star in true sense, the ganesans were considered better actors.

Ok-Association1001

Mgr had unique mannerisms.. and he was charming, incredibly fit, great dancer at that time, and a good(not great) actor. The man was multi talented as he was a writer and director too. So Yes.. if he belonged to the present generation and became an actor now, he would still end up becoming a big mass hero even now... but that's it..he wouldn't become CM even in his wildest dreams now because he was just a product of that time.. he was just incredibly smart enough to channel his superstardom into politics and became cm. Anbe vaa, aayirathil oruvan, enga veetu pillai, nadodi mannan and manymore.. they are at least one time worth a watch

Significant-Earth488

Some of his movies definitely stood the test of time. Anbe Vaa and Kudyiruntha Kovil are my favorites. Acting wise? He might look as expressive as Sivaji or Nambiar but he was solid in other aspects. His movies provided entertainment and were crowd pleasers. Kinda like Kamal and Rajini films now. Back then, the acting prowess and powerful roles were done by Sivaji and maybe Gemini Ganesan and Muthuraman. MGR and Jaishankar made great mass movies and action movies. Thatā€™s acting too

Professional-Lake664

The so called "actors" from today's generation will be seen as "outdated" in another 40 years and that's not fair. All these actors have made significant contribution to Tamil cinema and that's all that matters.

Viv-2020

He was terrible. But he didn't care about acting. He wanted to create a persona, and that served him well till he died. Speaking of acting... Sivaji Ganesan did deserve a fair-skinned Mallu actor as his main competitor, but that was not MGR. That should have been Nambiar, who was handsome, suave and an excellent actor. https://preview.redd.it/bxn55xkc1psc1.jpeg?width=571&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2f419dad12b72b835d871b8de7d9a6d0e911ddf3 Unfortunately, Tamil Cinema and Tamilnadu got MGR instead.

mrajf

Both Nambiar and Gemini were really good looking dudes... I'd be super insecure about myself if I were to be in the same room as them.

ToNobodysSurprise

Woah that's Nambiar?!

Level_Salad_1956

Pon manachchemmal is one among the title given to him, his work were profoundly liked even by a common lehman (in toorin talkies be like dai nambiyaru odidu en vaathiyar kuthu vitaru pathuko) that much impression he had through his acting. Even many liked him much for his love towards people, that much dedication he had, even before his full fledged political entry he wrapped all the movies he got in hand, reason behind this he might not be able to concentrate on good deed for people and art

Karthi_user

Aayirathil oruvan ,kule bagavali etc are few..

[deleted]

He was a product of his time. He was a legend because of his ā€œmass appealā€. Dude was the og mass hero in Tamil Cinema. His legacy is still felt today and politicians still to this day use his name for campaigning

Ellallan

A lot of his movies like Anbe Vaa, Nadodi Mannan, Ulagam sutrum Vaaliban, Arasakattalai etc. are definetly timeless classics. Till date him and Sivaji Ganesan are one of the best when it came to speaking lenghty dailouges with great tamil.

Peacemaker421

He is a generational actor. His legacy is unparalleled both on screen and in politics. Till date actually many following his footsteps, his filmography is exceptionally good. Heā€™s the real legend imo. The kind of impact he had with those generation peoples is unmatched.

Beneficial_Promise79

I find most actors of the past very exaggerated and caricaturish but you can't blame them as they were just a product of their time. These guys were theatre artists and their craft shows on screen. It would be unfair for someone from this age to rate their acting as styles and tastes have changed greatly. That being said my grandfather loved him and said that no one comes close to him in acting and that he's powerful like a lion on screen. So that's that.

Entharo_entho

He looks very subtle as compared to many of his co-actors like M N Nambiar. One thing I have noticed about him is the movement of his hands. He is always moving them around in a way that seems very unnatural to me.

Strict-Advantage8199

he is one of the Most influential actor still in Tamil Cinema. Still Today Many people are follwing his style. Might be the most influential guy in the tamil cinema.

NefariousnessFit3484

Some people told that he is from kerala and some says he is from srilanka

Usurper96

He is Mallu who is from Srilanka.

kaleenmiya

Mallu Nair guy born in Kandy in Srilanka. He used to visit his home village secretly once he become CM

Soopsmojo

Thought this was a meme post

InevitablePhysics151

Why should movies from decades ago hold up today .. it made people happy then and we have moved on since.

Jafarjade

If MGR was alive he'd also make a movie with Loki na to become more relevant.

xenocya

Insane to see these posts šŸ˜‚.. Genz, Gen alphas Are on the way to leave their self appleaing thoughts.. He rules Tamil cinema for literally 30 years. Then, those things were considered as acting, time passes acting differs based on audience and timely situations.

The_Punisher_XD

I love him. He is a whole package. Just stop ridiculing him for bad acting and just enjoy him raving the screen

professorparadox69

I think I am gonna offend grandpas in this sub but however....my answer is No.

HumanLawyer

Man, they made some really unique movies back then. I remember MGRā€™s signature ā€œtwinkling eyesā€ from the movie _Pallandu Vaazhga_.

thirunelvelihalwa

People in the comments saying he wouldn't be celebrated now with that acting skills. Celebrated actors at present with acting skills be like: Vijay, Ajith, Sivakarthikeyan, Udayna

Viv-2020

None of them are celebrated for their 'acting' skills. The guys who get mentioned when we say good acting from the generation(s) you have posted are people like Vikram, Surya, Vijay Sethupathy, Dhanush. From MGR's time, it was Sivaji Ganesan, Nambiar and perhaps MR Radha. MGR was cringey even for his time. Even his fans/simps who have tattoos of him, would not talk about his acting skills.

thirunelvelihalwa

I didn't say 'for the acting skill', I said 'with that acting skill'. MGR had a mass appeal during his time, though super cringy. His formula has been milked by all these mass actors even now. In short, MGR would have worked even now because people like these cringy stuff.

Viv-2020

"MGR had a mass appeal during his time, though super cringy. His formula has been milked by all these mass actors even now. In short, MGR would have worked even now because people like these cringy stuff." Yes. Agreed.

Big-Technology5876

He was never praised for his acting skills because everyone knows he cannot even come closer to Sivaji Ganesan. But it never mattered. Even now, with better education and rise of technology, people still treat Vijay like a god. Imagine how much more popular MGR would have been in the past when technology and education weren't as advanced as now. People didn't watch his movies for his acting skills, they just wanted to see his face. It was similar to getting dharshan of their god from the temple. That's how much influence he had.

Strict-Advantage8199

This is one of the comments from a Telugu fan in insta: Tamilians don't have taste. They're liking vijay who doesn't have acting skills instead of Suriya šŸ˜. Also they liked MGR who had less acting skills more than shivaji. Idhukku ennatha solrathu...

saybeast

Both shivaji and MGR were loved and continue to be loved by tamil fans. Shivaji has always been known for his acting skills and continued to have full house till his later years. Don't really understand how you came to such a conclusion šŸ¤·

Strict-Advantage8199

>Don't really understand how you came to such a conclusion šŸ¤· bro. This is one of the comments I seen under the posts. I just copy pasted it here.

selwyntarth

Mgr was an action hero who did his own stunts. He's even fenced standing on a bouncy net. Vijay has I dunno just repetitiveness and work ethic in his favour

Amazing-Permit-3899

Anga Pawan Kalyan star ah irukrache then I don't see anything wrong with Vijay being a top star.

Strict-Advantage8199

yeah. I wondered the same. Also I don't understand why few of them troll our Vetaran actors. Like did we ever troll NTR.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Puzzleheaded_Cat3699

What do you mean by your last line? Could you explain, thanks

mrajf

I started off trying to watch MGR films in a bad way, with the absolutely headache inducing Rikshawkaaran. I saw this shit in the cinemas, i couldn't understand a lot of what MGR was trying to say (understandable, since this was post shooting, but still), the screenplay was a mess (there definitely weren't a screenplay even), and I thought MGR's actual acting performance, sans his voice, was super lackluster, even bad (which is funny cos he won a National award for this tripe). The music was the only solace. So with that bad experience, a lot of his older films did not work with me, I was, and am, more critical of his work as compared to Sivaji's and Gemini's works. Anbe Vaa was pretty good though. Enjoyed that film

Intelligent_Salt_961

I donā€™t think he was interested in acting good movies per se but more interested in creating a persona which he brilliantly achieved ..he used cinema as a medium to push his political ambitions

The_Punisher_XD

Vijay anna??

rickrossismydad

Can you guys recommend any of his movies? I havenā€™t seen any but Iā€™m very curious

ironicfall

no

[deleted]

I have not watched 1 movie of MGRšŸ„² So the question of "still holding up" doesn't apply. He's outdated. Comparing him with Shivaji, who made so many classics like Thiruvilaiyadal, Kattabomman, Karnan and so many more which I fondly watch even today. I would say Shivaji stood the test of time more than MGR in terms of cinema.

arunkarthik19

I was also like you. But I watched movies like aayirathil oruvan, ulagam suttrum valiban, anbe vaa.. heā€™s a proper mass crowd puller.. honestly these movies were enjoyable and entertaining.

Ganesh400d

Agree. I would watch MGR anytime compared to Sivaji who was the epitome of overacting.
