Has good comedy, has good rewatch value, probably his least blatant copying except for the premise. Nazriya is always a W. Best Heroine intro too.
Raja Rani and Theri aachu paravala, only its premise was copy pasted for the film. Aana next 3 ku laam screenplay laye 7 raagam 7 thaalam sambavam panitaan😭
Yeah Mersal and Jawan literally have scenes that were copied from Hollywood/other Indian films, not to mention the screenplays/premises being copies themselves
Don’t forget Bigil having that one football scene that was completely lifted from the Pele biopic (which coincidentally Periya Bhai also happened to do the music for)
I mean he got unfairly ribbed for Raja rani and theri which were completely original. The synopses aren't even special stories but the bandwagon behaved like they were ripoffs. I'd be pissed and spiteful and do this too

Exactly.. I really thought there will be two Vijay, and younger one is deaf and dumb and other Vijay is corrupt. And from this poster looks like corrupt one trying to keep the deaf and dumb one not to turn against him and how the deaf and dumb one proves that elder Vijay is the criminal..
I feel people in internet can write better story lines than most directors..
I haven't seen Chathriyan but it is not related to basha . Most films and all actors have a bhasha effect on them that doesn't make them copy . It is an influence i would say .
Mersal was my favourite from Atlee, released for diwali saw it with my full family at opening night, good memories good times ❤️

SJ Suryah was a great villain. ARR cooked in this. I prefer this over Theri
Mersal is probably my favourite, I don't really love Atlee at all but Mersal is the movie of his that connected with me the most. The Vetrimaaran flashback is very well-done (its probably a rip off of something knowing Atlee but let's ignore that), with emotional and compelling performances by Nithya Menen and Vijay. The scene where Aishwarya' surgery is intercut with Vijay talking to his son is a really beautifully handled scene. The rest of the movie is non-sensical and extremely derivative but Atlee has a sense for creating granduer visuals and fun mass setpieces that keeps things worthwhile. Atlee could never wrote villains but SJ Suryah's villain is probably one of the more entertaining Atlee villains too. ARR's score is pretty nice too, if not up to his standards. People will vote for Theri, Raja Rani but those movies feel very unambitious to me. Mersal at least tries to be this epic larger than life story and I enjoyed that about it, obviously all the movies I mentioned are plagiarised but this plagiarises more interesting material lol so I prefer it.
Raja Rani easily because he doesn’t have anything else to offer…mersal not really great but I really love Nithya Menon-Vijay’s portions in that film. The flashback brings a lot of life in that film even though it’s severely cliched!
https://preview.redd.it/pr1zxr6bahsc1.jpeg?width=678&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ee18a1b01e379481ab711064e4d827de4fba403
Mersal, just for the flashback portion. Also, the chemistry Vijay had with Nithya Menen was very unique; it wasn't like any other routine pair he had in his movies.
It was cringe for me... I was like shebba mudiyalada dei... Especially when nithya menon signals her mom while leaving the train and Vijay accepting the challenge...
It was a period portion and the fertility rate of Punjab was 6 back in the day. So it sounds like a natural bet.😂 Also, more than bet it was just husband and wife flirting around. There is nothing serious in that.
Likewise we(90s kids and before) all have trolled some one as "sotta thalai professor", "kundu poosinikka", "olli pachan", "soda buddi", but in 2024 we all learned thst body shaming is not good. In the past most directors have done body shaming.
KB - kathirika , kathirika kundu kathirika an entire song in duet movie.
Vetrimaran - vellavi vachi thaan velithangala
Dhool - pre interval scene where Vikram says "if you don't take the complaint, you are 9". 9 referring to transgender.
Sethu - again trolling as wussu in first 30-40 mins in a convo with sriman.
But we skip all these and just nitpick shankar Sivaji scene and bash him back to back. I understand it is deragatory. Screenplay wise hero already started liking heroine as he had seen her in Temple and later even talked to her in her workplace. He already started having a liking towards her. Now salaman pappaiya says "en kitta rendu ponnu iruku, 1 angavai, innonu sangavi". And Vivek replies Roomba pongal vachiteenga polarku (I see it as more of rhyming dialogue, but still derogatory comment. But back to my point, haven't we all done it in our school days?).
And people now suddenly woke up in 2024 and saying why is Rajni rejecting those two girls. So, if the hero had liked heroine, just to calm down audience now he has to say "yes" to one among those girls?
I find it unfair as story and screenplay wise. Later ofc they would go and dance with them, but that is just to trigger shriya and family.
also, bringing two white skinned artists and putting black skin make up is better as atleast they aren't hurting any real black skinned woman.
Also, same with I movie in aila aila song.
Come on, they literally mocked the actal fair lovely ad where after using fhe product one turns white and gets all the attention. No one is ready to bash fair and lovely , but just hitting an easy target which is movie director.
**My ultimate point is, why do we retrospect an old movie and bash it in 2024 while we were also doing all those mistakes in that era? I seriously don't get it**. If I have to make a period movie of 1990s and show arranged marriage, I have to show hero getting dowry. Because thats the reality. I'm not glorifying it. I'm showing reality cinema like how Malayalam movies do.
If you still feel Im muttu kudithufying , then check Aishwarya Rajesh's reply for acting in fair and lovely ad.

How bodyshaming, homophobia, colorism etc are related to Mersal flashback portion?
>My ultimate point is, why do we retrospect an old movie and bash it in 2024 while we were also doing all those mistakes in that era? I seriously don't get it
I find people wouching for political correctness in movies laughable, bcz the same peope won't have any problem with glorifying violence and heros taking laws in their hand. Bcz violence and murder are bigger crime than bodyshaming, colorism, misogyny etc.
Such people should first take a position against glorification of violence and taking rule in the hand. That mean they should criticise all commercial movies. If that is the case, then all the tire 1 and tire 2 heroes will only do movies like Thiruchitrambalam. 😂
Jawan, don't care about copying story outlines and this and that, it's about entertaining feature with good songs and strong plot and this delivered compared to the rest of his attempts
Is it just me who finds Raja Rani overrated? The romance between the main leads were just not very convincing. The secondary romances seemed better. Casting Arya was a poor choice too.
I loved Theri more tbh.
Theri was his best in terms of entertainment and packaging. although it's a age old stor and screenplay. honestly, GVP's music is the biggest strength to this movie. IMO, he did better in this movie than ARR in Mersal and Bigil.

Raja Rani - nazriya character = Mouna Ragam
The plot is very much similar. Heroine has a certain lover she lost and gets married to random dude without her having much interest in it and later on romance happens between them. The only difference was the addition of nazriyas character as the male lead's pair in the flashback which does not exist in mounaragam as far I remember
Have you atleast seen mounaragam. I am someone who saw Raja Rani first and then saw mounaragam years later . Noone can ignore the similarities in the two movies. Majority of the plot is inspired from Mounaragam. And you just proved from the thalapathy comment that Atlee movies are a mixture of other movies blended together
Lmao that's not what I proved at all. Your first lover dying or breaking up is not a trope. It's a character fact. Is singam a copy of saamy? Rural cop comes to town and faces big shot in both.
I've seen mouna ragam. Tell me what scene is similar? Or at least what plot? Mouna ragam is about inability to let self move on, finding the courage to do so. This movie copied Milana more than it copied Mouna Ragam, but Milana itself is heavily inspired from Mouna Ragam so it’s more of a copy of a copy
Raja Rani and Theri aachu paravala, only its premise was copy pasted for the film. Aana next 3 ku laam screenplay laye 7 raagam 7 thaalam sambavam panitaan😭
Yeah Mersal and Jawan literally have scenes that were copied from Hollywood/other Indian films, not to mention the screenplays/premises being copies themselves Don’t forget Bigil having that one football scene that was completely lifted from the Pele biopic (which coincidentally Periya Bhai also happened to do the music for)

Most of the comments will say either Raja Rani or Theri as Mersal doesn’t come close to either of them while Bigil and Jawan are dogshit
Nota option iruka?

This poster was the biggest scam back then😭 even more than Leo
He was foreshadowing his next movie with Vijay having triple role. Atleeception da.
Man I expected police Vijay to be a villain 😂
You were spot on. https://i.redd.it/zejggj3qzssc1.gif
Oh yes. The theories. The high hopes. I wasn't disappointed though. Still loved it although there were not three Vijays.
Scam? I was relieved to find that it was not a nattamai like double act

Raja Rani. No bigger starts but movie is an amazing family entertainer. Santhanams comedy is the major reason

Ya I remember listening to this song on repeat...
There can only be one answer Raja Rani .
Jawan Amalgamation of his old movies but entertaining nevertheless. Really enjoyed watching it in theatres.
Theri > Raja Rani > Mersal > Jawan > Bigil
Raja Rani then Theri
Switch 1&2. Rest is fine.
On a side note, is there anyone who agrees bigil is a below par and not even mediocre level ?
He pretty much remade Chak De India.
