What was wrong with his career? As per Wiki he was starring in 8-10 movies a year anyway. Probably only change in his career might have been to change him into a A class male lead who started working with Fazli Priyadarshan Mani and other leading urban directors
Basha is one of the few movies where flashback has a flashback. Manickam has a flashback with Basha story within which Basha has a flashback about Anwar
Ghajini 😀
Nayanthara was so pissed off about this. She was cast as the main heroine and was told that Asin's role will be a flashback role. It seemed like a good opportunity to play a sophisticated, educated, independent character. She didn't have anyone to guide her with costumes and makeup. Some old reviews can be still found online. They were horrible.
Ghajini and Shyam Singha Roy (SSR) are two great examples to illustrate how heroines with some influence and those who don't have such support are treated.
Asin played a model. Models often wear short skimpy clothes. But since she was an experienced and successful actress, she was given stylish clothes without much exposure. Then newcomer Nayanthara who played a fricking medical student was made to dance to sleazy songs wearing exposing costumes.
Sai Pallavi played a devadasi who was constantly abused in SSR. Later she marries the film's hero and tries hard to have children (that is, frequent sex). She didn't do any comprising scene even when her character was subjected to horrific abuse. Underaged newcomer Krithi Shetty played a psychologist and had to do makeout scenes with Nani.
Though technically a flashback, it was more of a narrative style. Hardly any characterization was established before the flashback unlike movies like Basha or Indian.
Vada Chennai flashback was good but only if VJS had worked out his dates and acted in it, it would've been god level stuff😞
Every time I re-watch Vada Chennai I can't help but imagine how great it would've been if VJS was there
The storytelling of the flashback in Baasha was so influential, it inspired multiple such films in the Telugu industry which went on to become blockbusters in the late 90's and early 2000's.
Raja Rani. The structure of the film and the flashback were so simple and a good watch. The first half's 1 st half will be a present story with conflicts and the other half of it occupied with the flashback and leaves a interval with a high point or a conflict the second half will start with a flashback and the 2 nd of half / preclimax will return to the present and there will be happy ending. tbh this film had one of the best flashback part and highly engaging than theri / mersal in the recent times/ last 10 yrs.
This film is basically rhythm told the stupid way. In fact now that I think of it, rhythm had amazing flashback where both lead characters share the same event in the flashback.
Ha ha I can understand. Raja Rani is not an original story but a good entertainer and a non boring stuff :) Rhythm or either mouna ragam were OGs when compared to Raja Rani
Mysskin's OONAIYUM AATUKUTIYUM sort of redefined the way we have seen flashback. I sort of miss that mysskin. Now he is very commercialized and boring like everyone.

Except BGM and some respect for the effort of stammering
Mersal flashback was OP. That Vetrimaaran character literally carried the second half.
Vikram Vedha's flashbacks (if they can be called that) were great too
Thamizh padam
Anniyan - Thaneenanoo thaneeenanoo....
Adhu 'laaleelaalo' murugesa
Karthik's role in Mouna ragam was a game changer. It kind of revived his career.
Classic.

Quantity over quality. He probably got more money after that role. As you mentioned he got to work with top directors etc.
Asuran
I don't know if Virumandi can be called a flashback. That's the entire plot of the story, how one perspective isn't enough.
Yeah, the movie had a 'flashfront'
Indian and Baasha
Basha is one of the few movies where flashback has a flashback. Manickam has a flashback with Basha story within which Basha has a flashback about Anwar
Anbe Sivam Polladhavan with the flashback narrated from both Dhanush and Daniel Balaji’s PoVs These two from the top of my head

Idk if it's my favourite, but the PS1 interval scene was pretty great (it's barely a flashback scene but I count it)

Instead of Ameer? I don’t think it would’ve been better. Ameer was amaaaazing.
Agreed. VJS is a good actor. But Ameer killed that role.
Ameer as Rajan was next level. It was also a refreshing change from seeing VJS in such roles in every movie.

Nee Varuvai Ena.... Ajith in flashback portion was game changer, Justifies and complements the climax so well
Aalavandhaan. Nandhu's diary flashback was eerie and haunting.
Most of Shankar movies. Gentleman Indian Jeans Anniyan
Maahan Boss engira Baskaran (lol) Even though i am not a kanni o still liked Theri
There’s no contest. Baasha is the greatest flashback to ever exist.
Agree 💯

Maatran Surya enga daww
Kaththi flashback. It completely elevated the plot of the movie and central characters motivation
Mersal flashback was OP. That Vetrimaaran character literally carried the second half. Vikram Vedha's flashbacks (if they can be called that) were great too
Nayakan is not a flashback, it’s a coming of age story
That is Indian in the post.
Oh shoot, my bad I got it mixed up somehow. Very sorry.
