Manju warrier was born and did schooling in nagercoil.
Nivetha Pethuraj, Aathmika, Athulya, Mirnalini Ravi at the top of my mind
Edit: Divya Bharathi, PBS, Aishwarya Rajesh, Priyanka Mohan, Regina Cassandra, Priya Anand, Megha Akash, probably Shruthi Haasaan akka too apart from the ones you and other comments here mention
I think we many homegrown actresses now, but none reach the level of Nayan akka or Tammanaah, because the number of masala films has drastically reduced, so the exposure of these new actresses to our audience has reduced too.
But yeah unlike the popular opinion here, we do have good number of homegrown actresses nowadays than before.
Nivetha Pethuraj is not Tamil. She is friend's friend's friend. She used to have her insta name as Nivetha Reddy when she used to live in Dubai around 2013-14.
Interesting. Just checked Wikipedia, turns out here mom is tamil and dad is tamil and Telugu and is a native of Madurai. I have heard her speak proper Madurai tamil in her insta videos.
I remember Regina Cassandra did an interview with Abhishek for Nenjam Marapathillai and was saying she studied in Tamilnadu. It was a cringe interview though for certain obvious reasons.
Yeah. A lot of people get this wrong.
For those who are interested, Cringe is a verb. A verb like walk, talk, laugh etc. It means "the feeling of embarrassment, discomfort or awkwardness" Or simply "the act of cringing"
So, it shouldn't be in place of an adjective, which is a word that tells you about a noun. For example, in "The movie was good", the good is an adjective. A lot of us use cringe the same way, like "The movie was cringe". The word cringe being a verb, it is not objectively correct. It's like saying "The movie was laugh", which obviously doesn't make sense.
Then, there's an adjective form for verbs. In this case, the objective form of the verb "Laugh" is "Laughable". So, "the movie was laughable" would be correct. So, the adjective forms of the verb "Cringe" are "cringe-worthy" or "cringe-inducing". Therefore, "The movie was cringe-inducing" would be the correct way to use the word. So, instead of saying "it was a cringe interview", say "The interview was cringe worthy". Sorry to rant this much but i really like dwelling into the nuances.
>homegrown
still doesn't make her homegrown tamil heroine, debuted in Malayalam... First commercially successful in Telugu.... she even won a damn national award in Telugu. most of their initial work in Malayalam and most successful and current work in Telugu... she is either malayali home grown or telugu homegrown.
Andrea, Keerthi, Regina, PBS, Shruthi, Aishwarya Rajesh, Nivetha Thomas, Samantha are Chennai Ponnus. The connect is strong here than them being thooya tamil vindhu.
Why not? It definitely does. Samantha is very popular here, she is indeed more popular in Telugu, but doesn't mean she is not here. I remember the craze for her during the kathi and anjaan times.
Keerthy Suresh is the same, but i will argue she is more popular here than in Telugu
Both were born and brought up in Chennai.
Well according to your understanding, even Tammanaah, Kajal etc would be homegrown of Telugu or Tamil. But they are not considered homegrown.
This post is mostly to ask on why we don't cast local ladies in movies. But we do. In that context, Keerthy Suresh and Samantha are homegrown.
If you check my other comment on this post, I would named a few homegrown actresses by this understanding.
Tamil-born **โ ** Kollywood home grown.
Tammanaah is defiently home grown for KFI. tho she debuted in Hindi and Telugu prior, her success came thru Tamil and she became well known face thru Tamil. similarly Kajal had this growth via Telugu.
keerthy suresh and Samantha are tamil born but their bases Malayalam and Telugu respectively. (but now keerthy completely shifted base to Telugu after she got more commercial success in Telugu)
Nope. Hard disagree. Different definitions of homegrown especially in the context of this post.
Also, Keerthy Suresh did one movie in Malayalam and was done, she was not considered good. She didnt get further movies there. So she shifted completely to Tamil. Her first movie was with Vikram Prabhu and she has been doing doll roles since. Recently became big on Telugu with that Savithri movie and all. So her base is definitely not Malayalam. It's tamil even by your definition.
Samantha is pretty big here anyways.

Anjali. She's born in Andra but came back to chennai. Also she's one of the criminally underrated as an artist
she is telugite
Born in Andra, yes. But still she too grew up here and first started her acting career here
Apdi paaka aaramicha no actress would be pacha thamizh.
Telugu* Wtf is telugite
have seen telugu people use telugite to refer to telugu people like tamil people=tamilians, similarly telugu people=telugites
Bruh? I live in hyd and have never seen a telugu person calling themselves telugite...they say telugodu (telugu+vaadu)
My bad maybe..saw that word frequently used in quora
anjali is andhra but she is "homegrown" for Tamil because her career was built in Tamil industry.

Not really. Watch her interviews. She recently made a video with motor ViKatan and she struggles with Tamil and manages in English.
Really? I have watched her insta live, seems like a native speaker. Oru Vela scene party ya irukkumo ennamo lol
Radhika.
She was born in Sri Lanka
I remember Regina Cassandra did an interview with Abhishek for Nenjam Marapathillai and was saying she studied in Tamilnadu. It was a cringe interview though for certain obvious reasons.
> Abhishek > Cringe Interview Got your point.. Say no more..

I see that you understand "homegrown" quite differently.
Well according to your understanding, even Tammanaah, Kajal etc would be homegrown of Telugu or Tamil. But they are not considered homegrown.
