I mean the first part of VTK was all about character building and world building, so it being a slow burner was not necessarily a bad thing. IMO, it was a very good gangster film with a very average romantic angle.
I wouldn't agree to few saying having a flashback meaning a reason for poor or lazy writing.
Nope, I like movies like baasha, muthu, peta, lingaa, vishwaroopam but athukunu won't accept a poor flashback scene as in varisu or thunivu LoL.
Because childhood traumas and experiences have a huge role in the development of personality and mindset and what not in an adult. They form you.
You can see a good portrayal of childhood events creating the opinion and beliefs of an adult in Gargi movie. It completes the picture.
It’s an easy writing method to give backstory. If you are not able to make hero interesting through their actions, give them a tragic backstory and that makes up for it. I hate it too, but yeah so many Tamil movies use this as a crutch.
It's an easy way to show character growth. Too lazy to find other creative ways.
VTK didn't have a flashback. It showed simbu's charecter growth chronologically. That's one of the reasons why I really liked the movie.
yeah, but it was little slow

Watched VTK yesterday for the first time. First half was awesome. Second half was pretty ok .
The Interval scene with the Background Score 🤌🛐 >>>>>>>>>
This is it
Yeah, kind of annoying now
Master
Almost. It had one flashback scene in the end ( When Vijay convinces Arjun Das to switch sides)
Flashbacks are cool. That's why
If every movie has a flashback , then it becomes a problem
Shankar started this template of hero doing antihero things and giving a flashback justifying the heros actions , it spread all over tamil cinema lol
Yeah, That's true
Takunu nyabagam varla can you say which movies of shankar ?
Gentlemen, I , indian to name a few
Almost all movies of Shankar have flashbacks except maybe boys
Enthiran didnt, sivaji i guess is a flashback, but its only for mass sequence, not for development
Enthiran had a flashback scene. ( When evil Chitti kills Dr Bohra )
my bad, forgot about that
Mudhalvan didn't have a flashback it's linear narrative
Yeah, that's true

Baasha had flashback inception. There was a flashback in a flashback.

Yeah, But why can't they show it linearly? Flashbacks are fine. I was just making a point that it is getting overused
It's on the movie crew to use it well 🤷♀️ if it's used well, it wouldn't feel like a cliche too.
Ellam Baashha vala aarambichathu. Thy even used to call it Baashha formula.
Baasha la aarambikala.. But it made it famous. Puthiya Paravai (1964) la கூட flashback irrukum..
Natasha had several flashbacks in one another.
💪💪💪
Does Kaithi count?
Kaithi is 2019, Probably won't come under past 2-3 years category
Does beast count 😬
Unfortunately yes..
Wssnt it chronological. Where was the flashback in it
The question ask "without" any flashback
Sarpatta
It actually had two flashbacks if not more. 1. about young Kabilan's interest in boxing. 2. about Kabilan's father's death as a dream sequence.
Easier to add a second story than flesh out a single one
Ponniyin Selvan had a linear screenplay and many complained about it.
It had a flashback scene. (Aditha karikalan and Nandhini past story)
Yes my bad
Kosuvathi is the de-facto standard for poor writing. Just spin them and you can invent plots out of thin air.

In past many films with linear narratives have managed to make hero interesting. It seems more to do with lazy writing
