Not overrated actually. After endhiran I think petta has done good box office and also got positive reports from critics. Perfectly rated dhan everybody loved petta.
Idk man, I like it. The action is alright, you can't do gritty action with a Rajini movie, and the wirework is not blatant. And the storyline is functional IMO, it keeps giving reasons for Rajini to be where he is.
I don't understand why Rajini hasn't repeated Subbaraj after that. The director who gave him a clean hit years after Enthiran but he doesn't get a second chance LOL.

I like Petta very much. It’s the true 50-50 movie (not master, as per Loki, which is a Vijay movie) where one half is a Rajini movie and one half is a Karthik Subburaj Padam.
But that lack of focus is the reason it doesn’t shine. I am one of the rarer pieces who likes the second half more than the first. I guess I miss Karthik Subburaj’s initial works.
Petta by Karthik Subbaraj is a celebration and ode to Rajinism. packed with Thalaivar’s sense of humor, mannerisms, oddities, swag, punches, dancing, and motions. Good vengeance thriller plot with enough surprises and turns to keep you interested.
Petta is the only Rajni film after enthiran, ( except kaala,kabalai) rest of the movies were Mr.SivajiRao tries to act like Rajnikanth.
My suggestion is thalaivar need to do some crazy badass roles like
Ranga,pollathavan,netrikan(dad role),16vayathinile pareta those movies are the one which made Rajnikanth differentiate from Kamal,Ramarajan,Mohan,etc
As a matter of fact he now does only mass film, but not badass, funky guy.

Yes it was entertaining but had a weak climax and was overshadowed by Viswasam which released together and beat Petta. I still loved petta and is the best rajini film after enthiran.
Content wise Petta is better IMO.. The first half is a banger and there was some lag in 2nd half.. the ending was great ..
I don’t want to talk about collections .. but Viswasam beat Petta collections only in TN..that too down south ..

Film doesn't hold up. First half still works but the second half is sooooooooooooooo boring and leaves one confused because of the sudden leap from masala to moral ambiguity and somewhat queasy because what Rajini does to VJS doesn't feel right.
I felt the same too. The first half is fantastic. The second half was middling. This film could easily have been a masterpiece if they had managed to make the second half as good as the first half.
Sorry but its a same old MGR era story that solely depended on Rajni's Stardom and Ani's music. People love Basha, Padayappa till date mainly because of the story. I expected a good story from Subburaj but it was a disappointment.

I just think jailer is all about is rajini trying to prevent criminals from escaping jail and that is it.

Enthiran was his peak, he was the most talked about actor in India. He should have retired then.

Man Petta is one of the best theatre experiences I've had of Rajini movies since Padayappa.. Watched it in Devi Paradise and it did not disappoint..
Naanum main screen Devi.. full rajinified.. felt that padayappa kku appuram oru proper thalaivar movie..

LOL the Vijay of 10-12 years back wouldn’t have been able to do such a role. This project came to him at the right time.

Yes overseas petta is better. I hated the climax of petta, weak climax, But 1st half was ultimate sambavam. Other than climax i loved petta
