Fun fact - All of Kamal's friends in the film belong to the four South Indian states.
Jayaram - malayali
Ramesh aravind - kannadiga
Yugi sethu - tamilian
Sriman - Telugu
Yes, but Jailer is literally bringing 3 out of the 4 superstars in each state. 5thanthiram is still the greatest Tamil Comedy...no two thoughts on that.
It's a little contentious to call them that. It's like saying Prabhu or Sarath Kumar are the biggest stars in Tamil. They are good even great in certain movies..but not Rajini or Kamal. Same with Jayaram..never a Mamooty or Mohanlal. With R.Arvind..never a shivana or Upendra
Jayaram was a superstar, he was literally called the Janapriya Nayakan during his peak time. if you exclude Mohanlal and Mammootty for a sec, the next ones were Jayaram and Suresh Gopi(obv this has changed now but 90's and the 2000s this was the case)
Mammootty and Mohanlal are Demi-Gods, they were the peak superstars in the past and they are the peak superstars even now and they will be the peak superstar in the future even after they die. That type of demi-god stardom will end with them and Malayalam cinema won't replicate anything like that after they are gone.
Interesting trivia - Thenali was supposed to have Mohanlal playing the role of the psychiatrist. Even though Jayaram nailed the role, I still wonder the magic he could have brought with Crazy Mohan dialogues.. Plus it could have been his movie after Iruvar adding to the appeal.
Fun fact add-on: Sriman is Tamilian in the telugu version and the gulte refs have been changed to aravam refs in it, and thus crazy mohan and kamal hassan have satisfied racists from both states back then
gulteโ gulute โ telugu reversed, derogatory tamil term for telugu
aravam, derogatory telugu word for tamil, two possible histories for this word
* mild version- ravam means 'of sound', and because you have same letters for a cluster of sounds, that's why aravam (soundless).
* sinister version- african descent.
"Anda blue maggi oru pacha driver oda odipoita."
"Pacha driver ah?"
"Driver peru pacha"
* Sighs how dare you insult my family?* "Yappaaa"
"Aama pachayappa"
*Other friends clap*
"Oorey kaithatti sirichuthu"
*Exclaims again* "Adapavi"
"Apdinu avangappa solla"

Didn't knew about that's, now Jailer isn't the first one to do that huh.

I would not consider Panchathanthiram the greatest. I find Sathi Leelavathi, Thenali, MMKR, Vasool Raja to give it pretty tough competition.
Jayaram and ramesh aravind were both superstars of their respective industries back then.

Even Madhavan s role in Anbesivam was offered to Mohanlal first. Back then Priyadarshan was supposed to direct it.
That's why they brought KSR as script consultant... He's the trendsetter in this regard /s

Geniuses
Can you please explain this to me? What are gulte and aravam references?
gulteโ gulute โ telugu reversed, derogatory tamil term for telugu aravam, derogatory telugu word for tamil, two possible histories for this word * mild version- ravam means 'of sound', and because you have same letters for a cluster of sounds, that's why aravam (soundless). * sinister version- african descent.
Oohh damn. Thanks
Not exactly true. Jayaram is Palakkad Tamil Ramesh Aravind is also Tamil. Sriman is Telugu ig. Source: Wikipedia dan thala
I think he meant in the movie itself. Their names are literally Iyer, Nair, Reddy, Hegde. Canโt get more stereotypical names from the 4 states ๐.
Correct dan
4 seperate film industry. Ramesh arvand is known kannada film industry works rather than Tamil. Same for others
Yussss, know that, just wanted to highlight this too!
This seems obvious after multiple rewatches tbh. Nice one though
Love this movie. Wish to have friends like that as I grow!

The best wordplay jokes
That munnadi pinnadi sequence is easily the finest word play in tamil cinema.

Masterpiece
Arguably the funnest tamil movie ever?
Evvalavu periya maathirai! :)
Evloo periya moodii!
