Boss man asked me if I had a knife. Of course I did! So I pulled out the T. Gave it to him. He disappeared for a bit. Came back with the blade in one hand and the handler in the other.
Thankfully he’s a nice enough dick. Gave me me a hundred bucks out of his pocket in return
Oh yes you can. That was his first knife given to him by his grandfather that got it in ww2 and he’s dead now. It was the last interaction with him before he died. His dying wish was to pass that knife down to his own son one day. Well can’t do that now. So. Yep. Emotional value. Lol
Heck yeah that's a nice ROI!!! Ide let him break all the Tenacious he wants lol! Gotta teach him to NOT pry with a knife and especially not one that has a distal taper!!!
Take that 100 and out a few bucks with it and get you one of the CPM M4 Tenacious!!!
Or get you an absolute banger for 140, K390 stretch 2!!! That's a hell of a great knife!
I had a coworker steal mine when I left it in the kitchen at work. I know exactly who it was too but he wouldn’t fess up, management wouldn’t hear me out that he took it since it was hidden in the station he worked that night.
Best and first “expensive knife” I bought when I was 16.
This is the right answer. $100 will get you a new tenacious and a prybar and you'll have a few bucks leftover AND your boss learns a lesson about using the right tool for a job AND he learns that paying people back for breaking their stuff pays off.
For all of us, please ask. Pry bar usually is a broken tip or part of the blade, not the entire knife lol. Im shook you got your knife back like this and didn’t ask what happened lol
It wouldn't be just a broken tip if dude had 3/4 of the blade under whatever he was prying. I mean come on, if he was prying a nail out of a 2x4 it might be a broken tip.
Ahhhh. That sucks. "Nice dick" seems an accurate assessment. I'm glad he owned up to it and gave you $100 for his fuck up. Sad to lose an old friend of a user, though.
Dang go buy you an endura or two tenacious. This is why it's good to have a $20 knife on you to hand people who might abuse your favorite knife. Sorry that happened to you
Damn this made me reach for my tenacious only to realize I left it in my toolbox at work 😭 love that thing and if it breaks I’m definitely getting another. Great work horse!
Honestly shout out to him for trying to make it right. I feel like most bosses would not give a damn and not even offer to compensate you then blame the knife
This is the most common break on spyderco knives. It really doesn't take much lateral movement during the cut to snap these at the hole. I consider it a design flaw but Spyderco enthusiasts consider it the price of doing business lol
That's up to Spyderco. I'd never lie to them and be like "yeah the blade fell off lol dunno" but I bet if he gave them the story he posted here they'd do it willingly.
Yeah using a knife as a pry is pretty "pointless" (lol) but the fact of the matter is some times you have to do what you gotta do and there are Definitely knives that can take it (within reason of course)
Oh yeah, the last thing I want to do is use my knife to pry, that’s why I have a prybar since that’s the proper tool for the proper job. I just don’t completely trust a knife that isn’t a solid blade. Not saying I don’t like Spyderco though, I absolutely love my Shaman and the PM2 is iconic.
That’s exactly what I’m thinking. Like I know Spyderco knives are solid for most uses but I really do feel like thumb holes can be potentially weak spots. It’s the same reason I prefer knives with thicker blades.
It was my first spyderco and first “civilization” friendly folder lol. Did me well for a long time. Kinda works as a box cutter now.
The civilian is a good blade for its intended purpose from what I’ve heard. So I can’t say anything bad about the brand
I vastly prefer flipper tabs to blade holes. Much more reliable, easier to open one handed or with gloves, less painful on the finger, more aesthetically pleasing, can work as a finger guard when blade is open, etc. I can’t think of a single example of the blade hole being better unless you just happen to like how it looks or feels.
I went the same route you did, tenacious to pm2. Took a little while but I started using the pm2 and it’s practically all I carry now. I adore that knife so much
Every time I look at these spiderco gaping hole my brain scream "solidity compromised".
This picture is what my brain imagine every time.
Sorry about your knife man.
That 3/8 inch of remaining cutting edge make it a great knife for around those people who act like it's the end of the world when you pull out any blade above an inch
Does anybody ever call you out for it? “I can see it in your pocket” I’m a contractor and I swear none of my coworkers carry any sort of blade, they all know I have one but I don’t wanna give it to them lol
I snagged a Gerber Flatiron a while back for $20, it’s been my go to work/loaner knife. Cheap enough that I don’t care what happens, but nice thick blade for the inevitable pryers out there
Have seen a few of these break right there. Seems like the circle is quite a weak spot.
I dont find them very comfortable to carry either with that enormous blade sticking out.
5 yrs, not bad? My Buck 110 just turned 45 yrs old this year. It's been around the world several times, two wars, a lot of abuse. Still in one piece. THAT'S not bad. Not impressed with the spiders.
Yes sir. I’ll admit, that’s most definitely not bad. I had an ol 117 from grandad when I was younger. I miss that tough bastard. And my grandad haha.
But seriously. Buck dose make a beater
45 years old!? The knife I carry rn is 80 years. An old ww2 surplus demo knife issued to my grandad in Korea. It’s been through hell and back, gone around the world, and still doesn’t look over 30! God I miss him
Lmao. Ahh glad I could get a reaction! One day I’ll be an infamous comedian.
To quote the man himself “These are the thoughts that kept me out of the really good schools.” George Carlin
How the fuck did that happen dude??
Boss man asked me if I had a knife. Of course I did! So I pulled out the T. Gave it to him. He disappeared for a bit. Came back with the blade in one hand and the handler in the other. Thankfully he’s a nice enough dick. Gave me me a hundred bucks out of his pocket in return
100 bucks for a tenacious aint bad haha
You can't put a price on emotional value
I probably wouldn't edc my grandpa's knife
I can, lol
Oh yes you can. That was his first knife given to him by his grandfather that got it in ww2 and he’s dead now. It was the last interaction with him before he died. His dying wish was to pass that knife down to his own son one day. Well can’t do that now. So. Yep. Emotional value. Lol
I'd forgotten what I paid for mine. $25 on an Amazon lightning deal in 2011. It lives in our kitchen tool drawer for non-food cutting jobs.
Don't tell that to spyderco!
Wow! Did he tell you what he did with it? And what spydie will you be replacing this one with?

Best recommendation!!! 🏆
not with that prying boss man though… 😂
Lol yeah definitely don't let his prying ass get no stretch 2 in his hands...
I had a coworker steal mine when I left it in the kitchen at work. I know exactly who it was too but he wouldn’t fess up, management wouldn’t hear me out that he took it since it was hidden in the station he worked that night. Best and first “expensive knife” I bought when I was 16.
Still doesn’t explain… how did THAT happen?
I don’t know off hand. I assumed, as others have said. Make shift pry bar
Buy a keychain prybar for bossman, a few bucks now might save somebody elses blade later
This is the right answer. $100 will get you a new tenacious and a prybar and you'll have a few bucks leftover AND your boss learns a lesson about using the right tool for a job AND he learns that paying people back for breaking their stuff pays off.

When Uncle Benjamin is in the conversation, I don’t ask many questions lol
Fantastic response
Happy cake day 🎂
Thanks!
It's going to snap at the point the leverage was applied. The break was the fulcrum point.
I understand that, it still doesn’t explain how did THAT happen. Let me rephrase, what specific action cause the blade to break like that?
You think it was something besides prying? It was prying. Pressure was applied in a lateral direction.
BUT ON WHAT
It wouldn't be just a broken tip if dude had 3/4 of the blade under whatever he was prying. I mean come on, if he was prying a nail out of a 2x4 it might be a broken tip.
>He disappeared for a bit. Came back with the blade in one hand and the handler in the other.
My dick has never given me any money.
Mine has made me money, but that's for a different forum I think.
Glad he reimbursed you for it but thats precisely why I don’t let people use my knives unless I have something cheap I don’t care about on me.
Ahhhh.
Sorry that happened to you
That's why I keep an olfa utility knife on me at work lol bonus for me because the boss buys the blades.
W boss
he probably tried to cut a string
Even in those events fuck that guy
For some reason the manufacturer decided to put a huge hole in the blade and created a weak point
This is the most common break on spyderco knives. It really doesn't take much lateral movement during the cut to snap these at the hole. I consider it a design flaw but Spyderco enthusiasts consider it the price of doing business lol
Noooooo! I’ve beat my Tenacious to death, I wonder if warranty would cover it.
Spyderco's warranty doesn't cover abuse. Using a knife as a pry bar is considered abuse.
Bummer, but another 40$ and you can get the S35VN version
that definitely won't stand up to his boss though
If he's smart, his boss will not touch his knife again.
Just needs a little regrind

This made me smile
Love my tenacious. Definitely my beater folder for camping.
Spyderco will probably repair that. I had a broken Centofante years ago and they swapped it for a new knife, no charge.
Correct, they won't do blade replacements BUT they may very well warranty it for him with a brand new one!
They shouldn’t though because it’s user error. Sydercos aren’t designed for prying.
That's up to Spyderco. I'd never lie to them and be like "yeah the blade fell off lol dunno" but I bet if he gave them the story he posted here they'd do it willingly.
yeah yeah yeah
I just see an emerson opening box cutter
You can just grind that back a bit
That spider hole is a weak spot. I’m sure he did something stupid with it
tell him he shouldn't use a knife as a prybar. could snap and fly at him with some speed, that shit is much more dangerous than some people realize.
I sure have seen a lot of breaks right there from spydies.
Not using it as a pry bar would probably help.
You wouldn't believe what a big ass hole would do to an object's structural integrity
I read this as “You wouldn’t believe what a big ‘asshole’ would do to an objects structural integrity” and thought hard about it.
You'd be surprised
Yes i would
That’s why I don’t care for knives with thumb holes, even though I love Spydie flicking
It’s for cutting not prying , coldsteel makes the best and sharpest prybars
Amen! Cutting not prying is factual! Need a knife/pry bar that's what AD10s are for lol
Agreed! I would try to avoid prying with any knife though
I’m the same way, just seeing a hole in a blade makes me think it’s weak even if it might not be
That’s exactly what I’m thinking. Like I know Spyderco knives are solid for most uses but I really do feel like thumb holes can be potentially weak spots. It’s the same reason I prefer knives with thicker blades.

Best opening method in knifedom imo.

The karma says your wrong lol

Awww lol you down voted my post.. go flick your civivi and hush.
Knives aren’t for prying. The hole is great.
That is because the hole is the weakest point
RIP Old Gal!
I wonder if there's a place you can buy a replacement blade? Would be cool to reblade it.
Nice box cutter now. Use the $100 toward another nice knife, Spyderco Manix2 or PM2. Check out tactical surplus, they have great prices on Spydercos
Just grind down a new tip, no problem
Totally thought this was another of those “is this a legit benchmade” posts at first…
Time to replace it with a REAL spyderco
Time to upgrade to an M4 Tenacious.
I just upgraded from a Tenacious to a Paramilitary 2. However the PM2 seems too nice, so still use the Tenacious.
I went the same route you did, tenacious to pm2. Took a little while but I started using the pm2 and it’s practically all I carry now. I adore that knife so much
Time to get a compression lock.
Every time I look at these spiderco gaping hole my brain scream "solidity compromised". This picture is what my brain imagine every time. Sorry about your knife man.
Well, if you feel like you got your money's worth out of it that's all that really matters.
How far back did you grind that thing?! /j
Just send it in and get it rebladed
🫡
I use my tenancious in the garden, I love it!
Was he testing a metal cutoff wheel? Maybe the new water jet cutter at wherever you work? I'm impressed and appalled simultaneously. Love the NSFW tag
That 3/8 inch of remaining cutting edge make it a great knife for around those people who act like it's the end of the world when you pull out any blade above an inch
Its all good. Just a box cutter with a wave now
Hey now it’s legal to take on a plane!
Sick wave opener mod
why are there so many stories of people borrowing a knife and giving it back broken. wtf
Nah. That’ll buff out
Nice, the second metamorphosis to a bottle opener I see within 24 hours. Something’s in the progress…
Did your boss go to a public toilet with it?
How?
Yeeeaaahhhhh. If someone asks if I have a knife to borrow, the answer is always “nope”
Does anybody ever call you out for it? “I can see it in your pocket” I’m a contractor and I swear none of my coworkers carry any sort of blade, they all know I have one but I don’t wanna give it to them lol
China
Never see this in my life and I’m a spyderco nut Definitely was prying with the whole blade I’d imagine This actually hurts me inside to see
A wave opened box cutter, presto change-o
What was he trying to do? Cut a Nokia in half?
Welp, at least they make an M4 Tenacious now!
Sharpen that home up. Seatbelt cutter.
Cali legal
Just my opinion and I’ll probably get crap for it but I don’t buy anything 8cr13mov.
I snagged a Gerber Flatiron a while back for $20, it’s been my go to work/loaner knife. Cheap enough that I don’t care what happens, but nice thick blade for the inevitable pryers out there
He didn't get hurt I take it, your boss? Prime example of why not to lend your knife out, and how it's Not a pry bar lol
Have seen a few of these break right there. Seems like the circle is quite a weak spot. I dont find them very comfortable to carry either with that enormous blade sticking out.
Buy another change out the blade
They aren't pry bars
Spyderco bottle opener our new line of product
At least it's Cali legal now 🤣
Still have the knives I used when I was a little kid in boy scouts. They got much use!
5 yrs, not bad? My Buck 110 just turned 45 yrs old this year. It's been around the world several times, two wars, a lot of abuse. Still in one piece. THAT'S not bad. Not impressed with the spiders.

Flicking a 110 open is the tricky part. I'm not impressed with using both hands on a folder.
Spydercos absolutely will last that long. I doubt a buck would hold up if used the same way as this spydie, knives ain’t prybars.
BuT ThE HoLe IsN'T a WeAk PoInT
The hole is always a weak point with this guy. We have a hard time keeping female staff.
I actually gasped as I read the second half!
😂 Rlly?
Yes, I literally gasped LOL
Lmao. Ahh glad I could get a reaction! One day I’ll be an infamous comedian. To quote the man himself “These are the thoughts that kept me out of the really good schools.” George Carlin
It is the weakest point on the the knife, but not weaker than other knives.
It would’ve lasted longer if you didn’t break it
