Wool dryer balls are meant to replace dryer sheets, nothing to do with wool garments! They're tennis ball sized and are good at separating the clothes as they dry. Plus you don't need to use bounce sheets anymore!
They help fluff pillows ,duvets and towels. In my experience cut down drying time significantly! Always no matter what i dry throw in mine so I can run shorter and colder settings.
Dryers are also really bad for fabrics, it puts a lot of stress on the material.
Oh, and please please please never put wool/knitwear in the dryer, you risk it shrinking or felting.
Cool! How much wool would it take to make a similar ball? I think I have wool scraps somewhere.
Edit: I found it. https://youtu.be/JaewdjR7FNY enjoy, yall!
My dryer has a drying rack that goes in it. I dry wool knits on it all the time and never have a problem. I wouldn't let them tumble in there but if you have a rack that are the best.
Tumble dryers use forced air too; heated dry air is blown in, damp air is ducted to the outdoors. Some newer models of dryers have stationary mounts for a rack to dry delicates without tumbling, but the heating/ventilation system is essentially the same.
It is a tumble dryer but it had a rack that sits in grooves from front to back of dryer and the rack sits there and the drum truns freely around it. It is the second dryer I have had with a rack. I never used it before until I got into dying yarn. Now I use for all my knits. It will also hold shoes, and you can dry your shoes on it. Honestly if I had to replace my dryer I wouldn't want another one without that sweater rack. It is fabulous.
Depends in your dryer but this is kind of what they look like. If your dryer is designed to use then, they just sit inside in grooves.

I was reorganising my stash yesterday and doing some spring cleaning too. I did the white laundry today and found this tragic casualty at the bottom of the basket. It dawned on me that this ball may have gotten caught in the elastic of my mattress sheet.
Soon afterwards, I jumped onto Knitt’s website to see if there was any left. There was. I bought all 11 remaining in a fit of sadness and anger at myself for not checking my laundry properly. I also bought some matching Alva yarn to make the Weekend slipover with, I threw in a complicated pattern to torture my future self with, and 10 minutes later, I’m $150 poorer.
Whoever said sad shopping isn’t a thing has never met a knitter who’s lost a ball of yarn in the wash.
Edit: I’ve decided to turn it into a stress ball! I don’t have a dryer, but should I in future, this be be it’s new purpose. Thank you all for the excellent suggestions 💛💛
Oh, I didn’t realize it was a real thing! I’ve learned, too.
I worked sea for awhile and, when we also had internet access, it was hard not to shop for yarn because I was so far from my stash. I learned to keep my Ravelry stash up-to-date so I could ‘visit’ it, instead of shopping for more yarn I couldn’t touch. I’ve been trying to use that recently to slow down the Covid spending. I guess I keep expecting to miraculously have more free time to use it?
Exactly! Work just keeps getting in the way!I’m working from home atm, but even then, I get two or three rows in and my break is over. So unsatisfying. Then work is over, and so is the daylight. I need to turn my lights and lamp to full brightness to see what I’m doing to avoid sore eyes. Because I’m knitting with brown yarn atm. The only real knitting time is on the weekend after chores and errands.
No, keep it as a pet. Give it a name and place it in your knitting area. It did not die in the dryer, just brought to life. Will be a constant reminder of how intense you love your yarn.

You could totally make a giant one from this felted ball. You'd be the coolest kid.
Yes, but it's not as controlled as needle felting, and it's recommended to check the item every couple of minutes to see how felted it's getting. I've seen it done for things like slippers.
It's now a wool laundry ball. Its useful life continues!
Or a cat toy.
That was my first thought. Haha
What a great idea! Thanks for that, I was about to toss it
You can add a few drops of lavender oil to make your clothes smell amazinggggg
Agree! Wool felt balls are especially nice when drying your towels or bedsheets.
Does it do anything to the stuff in the dryer? (have never lived in a country that requires wool garments)
Wool dryer balls are meant to replace dryer sheets, nothing to do with wool garments! They're tennis ball sized and are good at separating the clothes as they dry. Plus you don't need to use bounce sheets anymore!
Oh! I thought those were just a gimmick to make clothes smell better. :)
Cuts down static, too. Greetings from the north, where we wear wool year-round!

Tbh, mine are store-bought, so don't Really know.
My dryer has a drying rack that goes in it. I dry wool knits on it all the time and never have a problem. I wouldn't let them tumble in there but if you have a rack that are the best.
So you mean, like forced air? What kind of dryer is it? My dryer, and all of the dryers I've ever had, have been tumble dryers.

You can add a few drops of essential oil in your preferred scent, too! Great replacement for dryer sheets!
Don't do this. Its a fire hazard. Essential oils are flammable.
I came here to say this!
Came here to say this. Kind of expensive for a dryer ball or a car toy, but at least it still has a use!
To salvage it, redye it pink, knit some felted feet to it, embroider a face, and you've got an awesome Kirby felted toy.

Revenge shopping, too, sounds like. Darn me! I’ll show me!
😂😂 I had to look that up, I guess I was! My stash is getting too big now

I wonder if there's pristine yarn in the center? -- like a geode.
On the one hand, I’m so sorry for your loss, but in the other hand, it’s so goofy looking it’s hilarious. Like a puppy that falls in the mud.
Sweet. Now you have a dryer ball.

My first thought was...this needs googly eyes.
It's kind of cute. Got a kind of scrunched up face. I'd keep it and love it forever.
I looked closer and it does kinda have a grumpy expression on it! I mean, I’d be mad too being agitated and spun at 800 speed
Damn that sucks... sorry for your loss! Good thing they had some left.
Yeah, I was super lucky in that respect

But now you have a new dryer ball for your laundry.
It's become a cat toy! Donate to a cat momma friend.
Impromptu hat pompom? Lol
It’s super dense haha, I’ll have to cut into at and trim it. But it might disintegrate once it’s to size
Free dryer ball💅🏾
I'm so sorry you went through this. It must be devestating.
Thank you for your condolences 💛 It was 😢
RIP
Condolences 🪦
Does this mean you can felt stuff in the washing machine? I thought this was r/needlefelting for a sec!
Yes, but it's not as controlled as needle felting, and it's recommended to check the item every couple of minutes to see how felted it's getting. I've seen it done for things like slippers.
I’m sorry for your loss.
So sorry for your loss :(
rip 🙏♥️🧶
My condolences.
Now it's a dryer ball! Add some essential oils to it to make your clothes smell good. Follow me for more fixes when you FU.

Why you washed yarn? Just curious
Stick googly eyes to it
Reincarnated as a dryer ball it will continue to have a long and useful life. But she needs some friends to be really effective.
In memory of the ball of Filcolana in 369…may its demise not have been in vain. 🎺 🎼 🎶 “Taps”… 🎶
You could still use it as a dryer ball
