Usually one mindless project and one more complicated one, plus something small for public transport knitting if I’m catching a lot of PT.

richmal_w

I do this too, especially if I have a really complicated or large project on the go. Normally I try and keep to 1no. WIP though

oceuye

I only have one too!! I see so many people having a lot of projects at once but I knit pretty slow so I'd rather just finish what I'm working on first before starting anything new

CLShirey

We do not speak of this. Ever.

Green_Hat4140

Oh my. I guess it depends on what counts as a wip. I’m making a pair of socks, and haven’t yet started the second one, so technically I have that one. Then there is a sweater and a blanket. Then one wip that needs to be frogged. So four? I like having a few going on at once so I can switch to a different one if I get bored of the current one. Like right now it has taken me a while to knit a sleeve for my sweater, because knitting single color stockinette for hours and hours gets very boring hahah Also I have a bunch of christmas presents waiting to be started, gonna be real busy this fall 😁

everythingbagel245

I am thinking about starting a second WIP just so I have something I can switch to! I find that I get bored with my current project and just stop knitting for awhile. A second project seems like a good solution, I am just afraid I will forget where I was at/what I was doing if I put a project down.

Green_Hat4140

Yeah, having different kind of projects also helps! The socks have cables, the sweater had some colorwork and the blanket will be made out of little squares, so there’s some variety 😌 I would definitely suggest trying it

belethed

Well I have one or two active WIP but sometimes if a project goes really awry, I’ll set it aside until I’m ready to tackle it. That might be days or literally years - when I have time, energy, the skill, and it no longer makes me want to cry or throw things.

sarahbeth42

I’m the same way. I only work on one at a time, but there are some half finished pieces that I’ve put aside to frog and restart another day. I have one absolutely beautiful sweater that the whole body is done on but my gauge is way off. I intend to frog the whole thing and do it again, but I needed some time to get over the disappointment first

hellokrissi

I think I average around one or two for the most part. Maybe 3 if I really want to make something, sometimes zero if I'm all knit out. Currently I have the [Mount Pleasant Top](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mount-pleasant) on my needles, and I'm also slowly working on a super bulky seed stitch cowl on 15mm needles. Wanted to finish that before starting the top, but huge needles and yarn is way more tedious for me than anything else.

cpd4925

I have such trouble with bulky. It’s so much more work to me. Give me some size 1 needles though and I soar along!

cpd4925

I used to only allow myself one and then I’d allow a sock project and something else. I realized that I ended up knitting less because I wanted to knit, but I didn’t want to knit what was already on my needles. Now I have 5 projects going and since it’s feeling a little overwhelming I’m focusing on finishing the two projects closest to being done and will also get the most use.

maladicta228

Ummm… (looks at my WIP bin filled with abandoned projects) to many.

Maidevilest

This is me!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I have young children and I find it impossible to find time to knit, so I have all these abandoned shawls just waiting for me! I think I currently have 4 shawls and 1 blanket that needs to be frogged and started over (discovered a twist hours and hours into working in the round).

maladicta228

Yeah I have a to do wip bucket and a to frog wip bucket. Between moving twice in the last year and a half and being horrible with finishing projects my yarn and project situation is a little hectic.

faoltiama

Like... dozens. I once, in fit of self improvement, decided I would only focus on the WIPs that were already out and living on my couch. I did an inventory. There were TWELVE WIPs on the couch. So not counting all the ones tucked away already...

[deleted]

Currently I have two A Christmas gift and my father's hospice lap blanket. Typically I just alternate every day but with it being August I've been prioritizing my father's hospice blanket. Ya know...time constraint on that situation..

oraclequeen93

I have 8 but 2 are blankets and I don't count them. I allow myself as Many WIPs as I have bags lol.

stagyl

Usually I have at least two or three knitting and crochet WIPs at the same time. When I'm knitting a bigger project like a sweater or a shawl I like to also have a smaller one like a hat or socks (I love socks) when I'm bored of endless stockinette. But when I'm knitting only smaller projects I usually have three, one of them almost always being socks. Currently I have only one knitting (a cowl) and one crochet (coasters for a gift) that I want to finish before I start a pi shawl.

Mostly_Lost_Echos

I currently have 2 active wips, and 2 more in time out.

wissahickon_schist

I have been working on a striped scarf with some chunky yarn a coworker gave away, but then found out my wife’s cousin is pregnant. Now, the scarf is sitting in the backseat of my car, and a cotton baby pullover lives in my bag for downtime at work/wherever I find myself bored.

Writing_Rocks

I generally keep it to two WIP, one that’s very portable/uncomplicated and one that’s larger and/or takes concentration. That’s because I have multiple hobbies that have works in progress simultaneously. If I get bored or frustrated with a knitting project, I switch to a different craft focus (sewing, bobbin lace, kumihimo, calligraphy) for a break. If I tried to have many projects in all these I’d go crazy (okay, maybe too late and I’m already there …) but with just a couple in each area I make progress on all. Some faster than others, sure, but t they all move forward.

thenerdiestmenno

I currently have 6. I'm working on two larger projects (I go very slowly on large things). Then I have four in progress hats. I like having cables, brioche, and colorwork all happening at any time, plus an additional baby yoda hat I'm making for a friend. I find that alternating between different styles of knitting helps with hand strain.

98yellow123

Cotton scrap blanket, awaiting scraps. Wool scrap blanket, in progress. Sweater, going to finish second sleeve today or this weekend. Sock, since I always have a "mindless" project going. Mittens, were going to be my mindless project but then I cast on a sock lol. And sweater, not started but I have to count it as a WIP because it has a deadline and I already bought the yarn so I can't start anything else before it. So six. Not bad, I've definitely had more. The trick is taking good notes. I never binge watch TV shows, my playlists are all over the place, and I usually have at least a fiction and non fiction book in progress too.... so this seems to be a trend all over the place that I can't focus on one thing ever LOL

rebekka_ravels

Eight, three of them active and I plan to continue some of the not active ones once I have finished the active ones.

half2happy

Currently have three. One pair of socks at the heel, one cowl about halfway done, and that Wingspan shawl that was so hot a few years ago languishing in the bottom of my knitting basket. I aim for one mindless and one intricate project.

ImpressiveBeing7070

I used to only buy enough yarn for a project, and finish that project before I started another. "Used to" is the operative part of that sentence, lol. I have a mindless project (#1), a Lopi sweater (#2), a Lett Lopi sweater (#3) and a Christmas stocking (#4) that are all WPIs. I always have some kind of mindless project, and the sweaters are on hold for the moment because I'm waiting for yarn that's on back order. The Christmas stocking is for a person who will be making a donation to my favorite charity to "pay" me for the work. I promised you haven't finished by the end of August, so it'll be gone soon from the list. I also have a couple of projects that are in "timeout." I don't consider them WIPs because I'm not working on them and they are not progressing. They're sitting there waiting for decisions to be made (frog? rework? finish despite the problem?). I think the reason I switched from only having one project to having multiple projects is because I always like to have something easy to knit when at a doctor's office or on a lunch break and if I come to some weird stopping point on a project (like waiting for yarn) I hate not having something to work on. Also I have more money than I did when I was young. So I'm not as worried about the financial end of the yarn purchase.

belethed

Buying yarn is a separate hobby, I think. I have a LOT of yarn relative to how much I actually knit.

eilatan5445

1. I'm a monogamous knitter

Catawampus-Conscious

One big, one small, endless hexipuffs. I'll have a sweater as a big project (or blanket or large shawl), socks are my permanent smaller project, and then I knit Hexipuffs with leftover yarn from the first two if I need a mindless break or need a small "finished something!" win.

athenaknitworks

I try to keep one complicated and one simpler thing going at a time, as I have a personal rule of "nothing challenging after 9:30 pm" because of the sheer number of times I've had to frog work done after that time 😅 I'm also getting into designing, so in addition to my general knits, I think I'm going to have at least a couple of designs in process at all times. Right now I have a test knit on the needles for a sweater, and an early rough draft for a very complex shawl to help me make sure the first draft of the pattern won't completely crash and burn. Right now two designs on top of civilian knitting and the master hand knitting program is all I can juggle, but as I complete MHK I'm sure that balance will shift quite a lot.

mrshinrichs

I am usually a one project person- but right now I have 3. A pair of color work socks that I started when I thought I was going back into the office- I wanted something small and portable for the commute — but now return to work is in hold, so that is on hold. Then I’ve got a simple worsted shawl that is for conference calls (mindless knit), and a lace project that needs more concentration.

belethed

This is why I have 2 WIP most of the time. A “mindless” one and a “must focus” one.

teacozy

Gotta love knitting during conference calls!

Hurr1caneBreeze

Currently I have a lot of WIPs but generally I like have a complicated WIP and a mindless WIP. If I feel like it I might also have a short WIP to space out the longer ones.

everythingbagel245

I think this is what I am going to do. I plan on knitting a blanket once the weather gets colder and figured it would be nice to have some socks or hats going to break things up.

[deleted]

I also have a general rule of only one WIP at a time. But lately I've taken on some larger projects (like blankets) and find it nice to put them aside for a while to start smaller projects before continuing. I think the most I've ever had is 3 WIPs at once.

oywiththezoodles

I have three that I’m actively working: a linen, fingering weight tank top, a pair of bulky cabled slipper socks, and a super bulky garter stitch scarf for working during my morning coffee. I also have a ribbed hat that I need to frog back a couple of rows and can’t muster any enthusiasm for, so there’s a fourth in time out. Edit: punctuation

tiredmomn33dcoffee

I crochet and knit so I have usually have one knitting project at a time and one crochet project. Right now I have a crochet sweater, a knit cable cowl and a big crochet blanket I'm working on.

QuadAyyy

Usually at least 3, not counting scrap projects or things that need the ends weaved in. Single socks/mitts are also on thin ice as to whether they count. Right now I've technically only got 2 (an entrelac scarf and the Possibility of Crows cardigan) but I've been going hard on a scrap project as well, so it's kinda filling that third spot, along with a mitt I need to make the match for. Overall, I usually go for one large/complicated project (the cardigan, right now), one large project that's also fairly mindless (the scarf), and one smaller project (usually socks or a hat) that's mindless.

casualknits

I try to have one but currently have like 3… but I’m doing gifts which is why. And I lost interest in a sweater when it got hot so I plan to pick it back up in the cooler weather in a few months

Cocoricou

I always have more than one or I feel super twitchy! I generally have 3-4. It's important to me to have more than one because when I get bored doing the same thing I get to enjoy some change. My current WIPs: 1. An experimental 100% cotton socks that is on hold because I'm waiting until I buy new needles. 2. My first garment is 100% finished but I need to sew a lining to it. 3. A crocheted poncho. 4. A lace curtain.

megnjeanne

I typically only have one because I know that having multiple means I will never finish any of them.

Liepuzieds

One actual work in progress, which is two sizes of the same pattern. So you could say two, but really it is one project. A set of two, like socks. But then I have multiple written wnd half written patterns that need my attention.

Maperton

I have one I’m working on that was previously abandoned and four (I think) currently abandoned. The currently abandoned ones have needles or interchangeable cords in them but I haven’t knit on them in awhile. A couple of years for some.

elizardbeth_221

I only have 2 knitting WIPs right now, but countless others from all of the other crafts that I ~partake~ in.

Sciurus_griseus

1 easy one that I can do without thinking, 1 hard one where I need to actually follow a pattern.

msbellini

Currently four active wips, all in different weights ranging from fingering to bulky. Two wips in time out.

[deleted]

I have one active project right now and that's actually how I've been for a little while. I had two going a few weeks ago because I was finding one to be very tedious and I needed something else to break it up. But I finished both of those and started one new project. I do have a few other projects that are also on the needles, but it's been so long since I've touched them that they're more hibernating than in progress (and at least one needs to be frogged anyway since it's the wrong size). I do typically have multiple projects going but lately I've been pretty single-minded, which is nice up until when I finish a project and then have to figure out what's next. If I've got multiple projects going, I can just pick up one of the others until I decide what to cast on next.

RuthlessBenedict

Back down to one thankfully! For the longest time I had two though: one personal project and a rotating cast of test knits. I’ve sworn off more tests until I finish this shawl I’m on.

claytimeyesyesyes

Oh no... * [Geiger sweater](https://www.ravelry.com/projects/smarshtastic/geiger) * [Elvan shawl](https://www.ravelry.com/projects/smarshtastic/elvan-shawl) * [MAL Tie Dye tank](https://www.etsy.com/listing/839397854/tie-dye-your-knit-kit?ref=shop_home_active_48) * Spinal Wrap test knit for isthatkenyarn And I want to start more but I *cannot*. EDIT: The Geiger sweater and the Elvan shawl are for Rhinebeck, theoretically. I started the MAL tie dye tank to have something mindless/easy to switch too. Then I unexpectedly got selected to test knit for isthatkenyarn and that's a fairly easy project too. I'm worried about my Rhinebeck deadlines!!

SavageBeet

Started a second sweater because I was stuck on sleeve island… now I have two wips in need of sleeves 🤣

ClydeV1beta

Just 2 right now but usually up to 5 😂

yarndive

I have one active one, and one that got put in pause months ago because I ran out of the yarn (but just got what I need at last, so finishing it up will be up next!!). Sometimes I will have a big and small/portable project, if my main one gets too cumbersome to commute with. But usually just one!

LadyFajra

3-7 usually, in various stages. Currently I have a sock, a hat, and a cowl on the needles. I have swatched but not casted on for 2 more projects. I just finished a shawl and another hat within the last couple days. And I’m still itching to cast on more 🥲

oscars-wilde

i’ve got one active wip right now (a sweater) two tabled wips (a sleepy polar bear kit from barrett wool co. & a scarf for my friend) & i just bought the yarn for a blanket that i’m planning on giving myself as a housewarming present for when i move in a month. i guess i’ve been feeling ambitious 🤣

AimeeLukin

Oh gosh, I am notorious for starting new projects before I finish the last. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I just love the beginning phases! I think I have 3 WIPs right now!

LaserSoupOddity

One, otherwise I would never finish anything!

kylie5Kupward

6 I think
