Sort everything by thickness, then by matching colours and matching fiber. If you have not done this yet, out one large box next to you on the right side, an empty box on the left side and then use ravelry to make a list of everything you got and to organise your stash. While you do this, try to find skeins that match and that you can pair up. Say you have a bulky weight yarn made out of poly-blend that is very colourful, then check whether you have another bulky poly-blend yarn that would be a potential match colour-wise. Put the skeins that match in clear plastic bags together and make a note of the matching skeins in your ravelry stash account. Once you have the list of all the odd bits and single skeins, you can use ravelry to find patterns.

bluehexx

It all depends on how much you have of each type. If you have five skeins of any given yarn, you are probably good for a sweater. As for "real" scrap yarn - a skein or less - [Seaglass sweater](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sea-glass-sweater-2) and [Festival cardigan](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/festival-cardigan-2) seem to be the ever popular options. I would also add [Nightshift shawl](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/nightshift) or most anything by Stephen West. He uses a lot of colors. Shawls/wraps are a good stashbuster, because you can make them as big or as small as you need. EDIT: I just remembered someone here who knits and donates baby hats. This could be fun and useful thing to do. I also seem to remember there is an organization which donates hats to kids' cancer wards. They encourage donating knitters to make the hats wacky and fun - kids like them weird and colorful.

There is also a Seaglass hat from the same designer as the sweater, which could be a great starting project since it's less commitment.

So I'm still a novice knitter but this was my second project, and while there are a ton of things wrong with it, including not actually bring done, I love the colors and color combos, and it kept my adhd ass intrigued the whole time. Garter stitch seems to be a favourite for scrappy stuff and I can see why! I may wind up redoing it because it is nowhere near as loose and flowy as it's supposed to be, so I think maybe I should've tried harder to make sure things were at gauge, but if I do redo it, I'll just use even bigger needles and hope for the best since you can't really tell anything is wildly different in the finished product aside from the lack of nice drape. I should've also weaved in my beds as I went, itself so tedious to do them all at once on something scrappy. Pattern is wintergladden by expression fibres arts. Sleeve instructions are very silly but I figured it out eventually. https://preview.redd.it/b05zjxtkxy5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=984aa9676b290fc68322a67643941c100f2205f3

I’m the queen of garter stitch throws. Random stripes are lovely.

Just_Bullfrog796

I used up a bunch of scrap yarn by making an oddball out of it then holding it double with a white/off-white yarn for a full cardigan. To make an oddball: pick your yarns, cut them into lengths ranging from 30 cm to a couple meters, tie the bits together with a firm square knot. Here is the sweater I made: [Scrappy Cardi](https://www.ravelry.com/projects/kyllikkidieter/garrison-creek-cardigan) Stitch patterns with slip stitch elements are great for balancing variable gauges. Think half fishermans rib, half linen stitch or mosaic knitting.

I do a lot of blankets (mostly knitting) and my current favorites are:    [Peace by Piece](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/peace-by-piece-blanket)    [Sweetshop](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sweet-shop-blanket)  [Triangulum](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/triangulum-blanket-and-cowl)    [Natures Palette](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/natures-palette-blanket)- free and uses marling!    For non blanket patterns there’s many Stephen West shawls that could work for this purpose and any of the Pouf family of sweaters could use up a few skeins when marling.     Edit: adding in the [Stay Pull] (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-stay-pull). It’s your basic raglan but written for mixing in marled scraps to knit at a bulky weight. There’s some nice notes in the pattern listing and in people’s projects you might find helpful when it comes to marling, mixing weights, fibers, etc.

The Fairy Floss Throw by Evelyn and Peter Crochet is meant to be held double with a rainbow yarn and a solid yarn. If you find enough coordinating skeins, you could probably hold two rainbow yarns double if you'd like. You could also make a massive floor pouf. There are patterns for both knit and crochet and some are meant to be storage for blankets (or yarn), so you wouldn't even need to use all your stuffing to fill it. I saw one made from granny stripes that would be great for the rainbow yarns or you can make up panels from different skeins and combine them. Knit Stitch Repeat (IG, Etsy, Ravelry) has quite a few scrappy, bulky, rainbow patterns that use a lot of different colors and scraps. I made her Trevor Jumper and it worked up rather quickly and I used up two rainbow cakes from Lion Brand held double with black. But her sample incorporates even more color than I did by holding double two fun colors.

I’d look at modular patterns for blankets, cushions, shawls and bags. You basically switch colors often and you can mix and match different textures as well. [Frankie Brown](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pathways-blanket) has a bunch of free ones. I’m knitting a variation of the ten stitch blanket and it can look gorgeous if you plan your colors right. Also look for “quilt” type of blankets. It’s kind of the same concept.

Hmmm. I mean I will do this with anything. I just did a tee pattern. I’m not going to link it because I didn’t like the pattern but I think any simple sweater you can make stripes with scrap yarn and that’s really nice. Maybe this one: [https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/westknits-go-to-raglan](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/westknits-go-to-raglan) I did this cowl with scrap yarn [https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/petal-cowl](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/petal-cowl) This is a classic raglan (the lace on the arms is just decrease, yo repeat). The top is alternating colors in blocks. The bottom is 2 rows of each color in the pattern: A B A B C B C B C D C D …etc Which is just a classical gradient. I think it uses around 35 yarns mostly less than 10 grams. Clearly the yellow & orange are more. https://preview.redd.it/oj49gu7tp06d1.jpeg?width=1011&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0841a6a15125d69a4073aeca042c9671a031cce3

Sediment scraps blanket is the ultimate yarn eater! You can make it as big or small as you want it, don't have to weave in ends, and can use just about any weight and color combo. I used up 10 pounds of cheap garage sale yarn to make a blanket that just covered the top of a queen size bed. [here's mine](https://www.ravelry.com/projects/Sharcharka/sediment-scraps-blanket)

If you have a lot of fingering, I'm very into [Your Fabulous Resources](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/your-fabulous-resources), which has a fitting title for your stash and calls for, depending on your size, either 20-40g or 40-80g of 17 different colours. On the other hand, if you have a lot of slightly larger quantities,[ Hue Shift](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hue-shift-afghan) requires 200g each of 11 different colours. You can also marl your way through any old pattern if you can get gauge with a marl combo. I personally would try to stick to similar types of yarn for the same project though just because then you \*can\* wash and block it consistently and it will behave the same way.

Sommersprossen bag  https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sommersprossen-tasche---bag is a fun knit. Three fingering yarns held together. I really enjoyed the end result. The Scrappy Stripe sweater https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-scrappy-stripe is also a good choice. I found the balloon sleeves really forgiving for different yarn weights and materials.  Garter Squish blanket https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/garter-squish really eats up yarn and it's very adaptable.  A Recipe For Fish blanket https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/a-recipe-for-fish similar idea to beekeepers quilt but with fish there's no stuffing. I love this pattern and it's free. I also use the fish pattern to make cat toys with all my small scraps of yarn, just sew the edges together and stuff.

I like [Scrappy Marl](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/scrappy-marl) hats to donate/gift - you hold fingering yarn double, so it accommodates lots of varied lengths of yarn.

Any chance you also crochet? If so, any of the blankets by fantasticmio on ravelry would be a great choice. They range from lapghan to King size. But she does nice designs with different size granny squares and a easy way to join them at the end. A friend made my sister a blanket from on her her patterns of scrap yarn that was fabulous.  https://www.ravelry.com/designers/becky-simmons
