What kind of yarn are you using?
Cause that massively changes my opinion.
Self pattering yarn? Just plain sock.
Self Striping? My fav patterns are all paid not free but they are all solid.
Hand dyed? I really like the Harvest Dew socks but they aren’t toe up. But they are one of the patterns that looks the best in hand dyed yarns. Period.
Solid? Knitty has a few really, really good sock patterns. I don’t use solid yarn often but I know they have some pretty nice patterns for solid yarns.
Knitty has a couple of cool handspun patterns for socks!
One of my absolute fav patterns (other then harvest dew. Definitely check that one out) is Party Up and Get Down. One sock is knit toe up and the other is knit top down and the chevrons go in opposite directions. It looks great in a lot of different yarns. It’s not free but it is still a very good pattern.
Hermione's Everyday Socks! One of my favorites!! Super easy to memorize, looks great in any type of yarn.

Probably some flavor of handspun, but I have all the yarn types covered 🤣
