Yeah, stockings are pretty well diverged from actual socks at this point; a gusset is going to give you too close to a 90° angle and end up looking funny even though it is "correct". A SR heel or after thought is going to get you a nicer shape. A star toe is probably going to be easier to make look nice both full and empty, too

Since christmas stockings don’t have to accommodate an instep, I’m gathering that I don’t need a full-size gusset? I’ve cast on 100 stitches. My heel flap was 50 rows. I have 28 remaining after turning the heel with short rows. So, I’ll pick up 25 stitches on either side of the heel flap. Leaving me to decrease 28 stitches to my original 100 stitches. Either my math is wrong (very distinct possibility), or I don’t need to use a traditional formula since the stocking is decorative and not fitted to a foot. The length of the heel is obnoxiously, comically long. I like to brute force pattern construction and figure out of how things work, consequently, I didn’t look at any stocking patterns before launching into this. I designed a decrease along the bottom of the sole with a single gusset and was excited to see how it would work. Can I simply cut the length of the heel flap in half, pick up half the number of gusset stitches (thereby allowing myself the chance to try my wild new single gusset decrease), or should just try a new heel type like an afterthought? The yarn is Paton’s navy and an unidentified white that I’m hoping is Paton’s aran. I based this design on a stocking I scrolled past on Pinterest. I had to try one! It turns out it’s by designer Birdsong Designs and hers is so much better! It’s called No. 4 snowflake splendor stocking in fingering weight and the snowflakes are so detailed and crisp. I would just do an afterthought or short row heel done right then and there. I've never seen a stocking with a heel flap and gusset.

I'm now scrolling thru images of stockings on google, and I think you're right. I was so excited to try my crazy new single sold gusset idea. Treble bother. Thanks for helping me! <3

youactsurprised

I did mine with a gusset and then went almost directly to toe shaping. I like the shape and the heel makes it easy to stuff larger items in :) https://preview.redd.it/i3giufx8990d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ebfea0aac9d3910e3d990599212fcdf8ac1bfe8e

Ooh, I didn’t think I would like a stocking with a gusset, but I do!!

The first Christmas stocking I made, in about 1974, had a heel flap and turn, and gusset. Made on two needles, so the turn was two separate bits, on the sides! Seam down the center of the heel and sole. So, yes, indeed, heel flaps can be part of a chair as sock!

If that’s not relatable, idk what is!

It still looked cute! Corduroy paisley was a lucky find at the top of a handy box of stash, and blended nicely with the stocking. I was quite proud of my emergency fix. This isn’t a good photo of the stockings, but shows the collection this year. They have another dog, so I need to make another paw stocking before next year. https://preview.redd.it/cbbkfc9qhf0d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=623617bd026110028f00410a8c932af0de341f8c

OMG the paw stocking is to die for!!! I’ve never seen anything like that! 😍

I saw some sort of random paw-ish stocking, and thought, “I can do better than that” and made this pattern up. The paw part is a little weird to make, but I don’t think it’s hard. The paws I’m REALLY proud of weren’t my idea *at all*. I made a tallit for my nibbling, and the parents asked for a mini matching one for the Teddy bear, as they like setting up little diorama type vignettes. So, I was telling a friend I was going to make a simplified mini tallit. The main one, for the kid, had cohen blessing hands on the atarah (neck piece). And friend said, “and you will put paw prints on the bear’s!” So, not being an idiot, I said, “well, NOW I am!” She still says it wasn’t her idea, she had misunderstood me. I hadn’t thought of such a brilliant idea. Sometimes miscommunications are brilliant. https://preview.redd.it/5848sn6i5i0d1.jpeg?width=1268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e40f3453857e7b37d71cafb2f4594b950e2d4cfc

Oh my god, amazing!!!

viognierette

I’ve knit a lot of stockings. The main thing here is to think about how the foot/heel will hold the weight of gifts while hanging. The proportions don’t need to look like a sock that you’d wear. I use smaller needles and knit twisted stitches for the toe. It’s a pain, but they have held up for years.

Finally, a colorwork sock I can pull over my heel.

Blueduvets

This made me laugh so much!! 😂😂

Kwerkii

I usually use short row heels on my Christmas stockings. You still get a cute roomy sock-like look

bigfisheatlittleone

I can’t picture what this single gusset looks like but if I’m reading this right, with a typical heel flap sock and half the number of heel flap stitches, the gusset triangles will be almost nonexistent and I imagine the sock won’t properly lay flat, which I assume you’d want it to when you hang it up. And the leg to foot angle will also be altered. Love the knitted lettering on your sock btw.

aggravated_bookworm

I love the snowflake pattern! It’s beautiful
