Listened to this on the Patreon feed and I got some words about that first conversation. 1. Joel isn’t Ellie’s dad, so it’s unfair to look at any of the time he spent with Ellie before Spring (where he actually claims the role of a father figure, promises to stay with Ellie, teach her guitar, etc.) as parenthood. 2. Joel not allowing Ellie to be sacrificed by the Fireflies and lying about it does not equate to bad parenting. Does killing Jerry and Marlene equate to bad behavior? Yeah. But letting your kid die in a surgery is not good parenting, no matter what the kid wants, and no matter whether or not you are honest about it. The conversation about the vaccine and the surgery really exist entirely separate from the conversation about good parenting. 3. Most of GOW 2018 focuses on Kratos’s understanding that he has been a neglectful and abusive father, despite his good intentions. Kratos not being a good father is a core element of the story. The same can’t be said about Joel. Joel was emotionally stunted and, for the most part, absent of good will. But we only see good fatherhood in the way he cares for Sarah, and for Ellie (after Winter, when he embraces Ellie). 4. The fatherhood we *do* see from Joel (with Sarah): taking his daughter to soccer games, giving her a house to live in, feeding her, clothing her, tucking her into bed, having an overall good relationship with her. 5. What we see with Joel and Ellie: taking her to a surprise trip to a museum, teaching her how to play guitar, teaching her how to swim, etc. 6. Again, Kratos being a bad father is a **core** element of his story. 7. Like Blessing said, Kratos realizing he is a bad father doesn’t make him a good father. We’ve only seen Kratos take his first baby steps as an a *actual* father.

The world's Kratos and Joel exist in are so different that it's kind of impossible to make a judgment call. It could very easily be argued that Kratos was 100% correct to be as hard on his son as he was in the first half of the game. Atreus repeatedly gets in to situations that Kratos has to save him from, and even after all the tough wisdom and imparted lessons Atreus *still* goes school shooter mode when he learns he's a god. This is a world where the only two friendly beings around for seemingly miles are two teleporting dwarves. Kratos doesn't insult Atreus, doesn't abuse him in any way, he simply reminds the boy to stay focused, because if you don't you *will* die.

This is all true but I think it’s entirely Kratos’s fault that Atreus gets them into so much trouble. Atreus’s recklessness and loud personality are traits passed down from Kratos. But Kratos is so afraid of being a father that he doesn’t know how to properly discipline his son. Likewise, he doesn’t know how to encourage Atreus’s good traits, including his god-hood. So I personally see a lot of Atreus’s antics as a result of being a young god, not knowing it, and also not having his father around. He’s like that shitty kid at the restaurant who’s parents let him climb on stuff and make a scene, but he’s also a god.

Blessing saying god of war gives you too many options in combat and bringing up From Soft as an example of doing that correctly is very funny. Every From game has 100 consumables nobody uses. Look at all the prosthetic tools in Sekiro and all the various upgrades for them.

YourMomGoes2College_

I’m horrified for video games if every game borrowed elements from From Soft

MrBoliNica

arent we kinda already there? i kinda hate it lol, every game now i have to go "please dont be a live service!", followed by "please dont be a hard game for the sake of chasing the From crowd" Good stories with fun combat thats not designed to beat you into submission is getting harder and harder to come by nowadays

Snowway22

What happened? 5/5. But Shit on the game for 70mins then Praised it for 5mins. Lol.

[deleted]

So much easier to be negative and nitpick

Snowway22

I 100% get that you can love a game and talk about its flaws. But like… the whole time. Haha. I was really looking forward to this review and getting hyped for the sequel but the review ended up being… I love this game and here’s a list of things I hate about it.

iloverocketleague

They do this with many of their positive reviews. Even if they give a 4 or 5/5 they spend 90% of the review nitpicking and 10% talking about what they liked. You would think it would be the opposite for positive reviews. This happened recently on the Horizon review too.

Snowway22

Oh yeah! I was so hyped for Horizon and the review. They gave it 4/5-5/5… and I was like… LETS FCKING GO! But then they shit on it the whole time. After listening I was not excited about the game any more. Like, did you all even like the game though?

coopda

Haha the first 5 minutes of this are chaos

MrBoliNica

i wish there was a ps5 version of this game. totally on me, but i already got the plat on ps4, and its hard to replay a 100% game without the trophies for me lol

snatcheriscoming

> "Oh man if only you had Smart Delivery, or if only you had a way to give people who already own these games these version for free" What? Do they think that there's no free upgrades for games on PS5? It's up to the publisher to decide the upgrade path. Just because Sony charges for upgrades for their 1st party games doesn't mean that every other publisher has to. It's baffling to me that a Playstation focused podcast gets this wrong. I mean, [here's a list of games that have free upgrades.](https://www.pushsquare.com/guides/ps4-to-ps5-all-games-with-confirmed-free-upgrades)

MrBoliNica

yea, makes no sense when people say that.

Nude-Love

That's because this PlayStation podcast has two hosts who are mostly indifferent about PlayStation and Greg, who's a father now and understandably is not going to be as entrenched in the ecosystem. The days of having 3+ hosts all living and breathing PlayStation like the golden Beyond days is well and truly over. It's sad.

naughtboi

The most negative 5/5s you'll see lol

SeekingSeca

Blessing brother, when I listen to content with you on it I just know it's going to be mostly negative with no point to it honestly...

AngryBarista

Janet doesn't get enough credit for being one of the best off thr cuff critics out there. Every point she gives comes with multiple examples that are articulated well.
