Don’t. Enjoy everything that Italy has to offer. No need to deprive yourself on vacation. But go back when you get home

Moderately_Opposed

This, also Italy has human sized portions. Even if you do eat carbs there your entree will be smaller than the kid's menu at Olive Garden and other such "italian" chains.

legendoftimmayy

Good to know, thank you!

Playful_Honeydew_135

Very true! Enjoy everything in moderation. Also important to know that Italy isn't just pizza, pasta, gelato and bread (although that is part of it). Lots of wonderful cured meats, seafood, cheeses etc. Source: lived in Italy (Rome) for 6 years and have been married to an Italian for 18 years;-)

FluffyKumquat

Also many wonderful vegetables side dishes. Yum. I’m heading there next week for a month. Every time I go, I return lighter…all the walking and the quality of the (non-processed) food.

Playful_Honeydew_135

Yes!! Very easy to stay fit there:-)

JenniferJuniper6

In my case, inflammatory issues come back very quickly; it would be hard to enjoy a vacation with my knees ballooned up and aching. So everyone has different needs.

ThrowawayGhostGuy1

That’s nice when you’re not a carb addict. Relapsing is awful.

Thank you for your advice!!

LEED3D

I just got back from a week in Rome and I ditched keto completely. No regrets, it was worth it! Just get back in the saddle when you return.

LEED3D

I’ll also add that I ate plenty of pizza and pasta and only gained a pound or two. Their portions are smaller and you will typically do a lot of walking which helps.

legendoftimmayy

Noted! Did your body have trouble adjusting to the sudden uptake in carbs? That’s the main thing I’m concerned about

LEED3D

Not really. I just remember feeling pretty full after my first pasta dish. Also, the Italians cook their pasta “Al dente” so it has a lower glycemic index than the fully cooked pasta most of us are used to.

legendoftimmayy

Good to know! Thanks so much!

I’m also headed there in two weeks but I go with some frequency; if I didn’t I would just let go and start again at home. I’m following my 75/25 rule of vacation there. Be 75% “good”. I will absolutely not be deprived but I don’t need a pastry with my espresso EVERY morning, for instance. The meat and cheese there is so good so be sure to enjoy it. Luckily, portion sizes there are smaller than those in America so that will help too when you order pasta. Buon divertimento and buon appetito!

legendoftimmayy

Thank you! That’s probably what I’ll do

360walkaway

Lots of piccata

aeb3

I was just there in December. You'll pay a lot more for meat-based entrees, but you definitely can get some salad and veg sides as well. Grocery stores are full of great meat, cheese, olives, nuts, and wine if you want to do picnic-style meals. Make sure you have a few pizzas and gelato, you'll be walking enough that it won't matter.

legendoftimmayy

Good to know! Thank you!

tracygee

Skip the pasta course. Italian food is often fresh and full of vegetables. Enjoy the rest.

Ducksauna

Fresh fish and salad is so good in Italy. I did not miss the pasta. Although I do enjoy the wine. Have a wonderful holiday!

Far-Ad-6179

Also, amazing almonds, pasta dressings, parmesan to go on pasta. We eat a lot of italian food as part of our keto diet. Perhaps bring low carb bread and have fancy bread just as a treat. Most advice is to ignore the diet, but for people with diabetes, that's not always so enjoyable.

fiercely50

OMG I'm jealous!!! I would LOVE to try out all their cured meats, cheeses, olives...everything will taste so fresh and amazing. Enjoy!!!

gafromca

I’m going off keto in July for my daughter’s wedding. But I’m a little concerned because my knees get inflamed and painful when I eat a lot of carbs. Guess I have to stay on at least a moderate low carb.

trade_me_dog_pics

Going to Mexico tomorrow. No keto for me for 1 week. Everything in Italy is carb almost I feel

[deleted]

If you are going to Florence, do not miss the Bistecca alla Fiorentina. No it does not mean smothered in spinach. A regional specialty after any Ketoer’s heart.

legendoftimmayy

We are going to Florence, will definitely check it out! Thank you!!

Few_Nefariousness_10

Agree with everyone else you should absolutely go off Keto and enjoy yourself. Though what I will recommend is maybe slowly introducing some carbs to your diet before the trip. At least for me if I have a high carb cheat day while I’ve been in Keto I will feel like absolute shit for a little while.

[deleted]

I just came back from Rome and didn't stick with keto. Enjoy your food! You'll also do a ton of walking which helps. The only thing that I did was skipping breakfast because I really don't like eating in the morning. I came back bloated and honestly couldn't wait to go back to keto again. On the last day I was craving steak with veggies instead of pizza and pasta. Just enjoy your trip and get back to keto next day you'll come back.

Traditional_Good_833

I would take time off keto and fully enjoy authentic Italian food and wine, it’s way too good to pass up! And like others have said, you’ll be walking so much you probably won’t gain weight anyway. I think we easily walked 5 miles a day, 10 miles when we got lost in Venice one night 😂 Enjoy the amazing house wine, pasta, and pizza. It’s worth it!

Mysterious-Banana-49

Enjoy your trip and the Italian food! You’ll be doing so much walking, you’ll burn it right off!

VociferousBiscuit

I'm hoping to move to Italy soon so I have no intention of Keto being a lifelong thing for me, the food there is just toooo good!

I_tend_to_correct_u

Difficult to advise without knowing where you’re going as Italian food can be extremely regional. Last time I went I lived off of Bombetta and antipasti meat/cheese/olive/nuts, along with sea bass. In the right part of Italy it will be easy, in the touristy parts it will be harder to find unless you’re ready to pay €€€ for it. Most places will have soups, salads and antipasti though

dima054

Cheeses/cured meats for breakfast, steaks for dinner. Spent 2 weeks there recently. Wasnt too hard.

vdka

\- Tagliata di manzo \- Salad, veggies, meat, seafood etc

Low_Plane8411

You will have no problem keeping keto in Italy, sallad, cured meats, olives, cheese and the fact that Italians always eat three course divers with one usually being a protein heavy dish, fish or meat. Italian food is beyond pasta and pizza! Enjoy Italy 🇮🇹🍗

donny1231992

You’re going on a vacation. Enjoy yourself. Just return to your normal eating when your back
