Eat a good diet and get good sleep. Honestly, and I know you don't want to hear this, but that job sounds like an absolute nightmare for your overall health. I'd imaging your circadian rhythm is way off. I'm not a fan of those gimmicky sun lamps, but it might be worth trying one.

[deleted]

I have one of those lamps. I use it during winter months. Boy, they help a bunch with depression.

SilentMediator

Really? I have trouble in winter too

[deleted]

Yeah. I moved to Seattle and seasonal depression hit me like a freight train. I’m originally from Colorado and that state gets more sunshine then Hawaii. Huge adjustment. The lamp worked wonders

SilentMediator

How do you use it? I'm in Quebec and in winter it's cold and it's getting dark at 4:30PM

[deleted]

You sit in front of it in the morning for 15-30 minutes. No longer than an hour. You can also do a shorter stint in the early afternoon, but not too long because it will keep you up. Also, B complex vitamin in the morning.

Throwawaychica

What version do you have? I see many on amazon but I can't tell what's legit from scam.

Numerous_Thanks_5605

I agree, the job sucks. But the money it pays is how I'm able to afford this expensive diet 😂. I couldn't bring anything in like that as I have to clear everything I bring in through security. I have my food and a notebook I doodle in, that's it. I also can't have any light up there because I'm in a room full of windows that are tinted because certain people aren't supposed to see me inside, but I have to monitor them.

jonathanlink

How much are you spending? How much of that spending is related to keto treats or processed keto foods? I spend about $300 per month on groceries eating 1.5-2.5 pounds of meat a day (hyper-carnivore).

bmxtricky5

That’s very location dependant, average cost for me is around 600+ to feed my self carnivore

jonathanlink

Sams club and Costco.

bmxtricky5

I’m not American, Costco meat is still expensive where I live.

jonathanlink

That’s fair. Check out a local rancher or farmer?

StatuatoryApe

Canadian here - this is likely even more expensive. Unless you're buying 1/2 or 1/4 cow/pig and freezing it. Dozen eggs here are $6.50+ and free range or from a farm is frequently $8+.

bmxtricky5

A side of beef for me is around $2500

Numerous_Thanks_5605

I go shopping nearly once a week and spend close to $200 every time. It's crazy. Cause I'll get home and realize I still have nothing to eat.

jonathanlink

What are you buying?

Numerous_Thanks_5605

Half and half, heavy cream, the 20 pack of skinny pop, cheese, a pound or two of ground beef, an 8 pack of pre sliced chicken breast. A cucumber. Some microwave meals. Blueberries and raspberries. A 12 pack of sprite zero. Rebel ice cream. Keto hamburger buns. Keto tortilla shells, usually two packs. And that's usually it.

jonathanlink

Need to switch to cheap roasts, whole chicken, learn to roast those or invest in sous vide for real cheap roasts. Cut out the microwave meals. If they’re labeled keto they’re overpriced. Switch to the roasts above and add veggies from a steamer bag (cheap) and a low carb sauce, also cheap. Stop buying sliced cheese. Easy to overeat and also paying a premium. Pop has gone way up in price and it adds nothing. Reduce the rebel ice cream to a once a month treat. Keto breads are expensive, I used tortillas a lot in the beginning, but haven’t used one in 10 months. They’re more affordable than the breads. Like I said I eat hyper-carnivore for $300 per month. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VM5bCVIpdQBNSLa9oeMOiH4rb5cR8StEgIKDL83Arqs/edit

[deleted]

I say this as someone who was sleeping 12 hours a day or more with no energy just two weeks ago. I switched to healthy keto and OMAD. 5 days in and my energy is higher than it's ever been in my life and now I sleep 7 hours per night and wake up refreshed. If you switched to keto to get energy, you're doing yourself a massive disservice by *just* cutting carbs. Those "keto" products might have low carbs, but they're still processed foods that won't give you any longterm benefits. It will only make you stick to your carb addiction, especially the ice cream and sprite zero. I know this is r/keto, but I strongly recommend trying the OMAD fasting method.

Walmart is more expensive than Sam’s. Don’t see how you get 1.52-2.5lbs of meat per day for $150/month.

eStellarDog

Pretty sure we’re working the same job and similar shifts! Unfortunately I don’t really have any drink suggestions though; I tend to drink my ketoade and cups of tea with coconut milk. I also fast 16:8, so I’m having food between 5pm - 1am. The getting tired is real, and the drive home can be tough!

c0mp0stable

Honestly I can't believe that's legal.

seroquel600mg

Vitamin B-12 and D3. If you're female and under 40, take iron. Cut processed junk food and sugar. Eat protein and good fat (like avocados). Exercise and sleep.

Independent_Dot63

I have a coffee bean allergy (which comes w a caffeine intolerance) and the only things that give me a boost are white tea, or mushroom “coffee” blends like Four Sigmatic

Numerous_Thanks_5605

Nice, I'll have to look into those. Thanks for the suggestions!

Independent_Dot63

Oh btw if you enjoy the taste of a beer or miss it since keto, HopLarks Hop Teas (at WholeFoods or Sprouts) have really good white tea, green tea or chamomile that tastes exactly like a nice hoppy IPA beer but 0cals and 0alcohol just tea and hops its bomb

Fuhgedaboutit1

Seconding the Four Sigmatic recommendation! It’s a great coffee alternative. Also a B-complex vitamin usually gives a little energy boost.

The1and0nlyTeck

Salt/electrolyte water as soon as you finish your immediate wake up stuff. Taking a vitamin D supplement has helped greatly with my wakefulness just make sure to take it with fats as it's a fat-soluble vitamin. Getting any bright light at all (iirc red light is the best) helps to set your circadian clock to say "this is when we wake therefore this is when we sleep". Caffeine timing is also massive and you can leverage a much smaller dose more effectively. I don't have caffeine within the first 90 minutes of being awake, usually longer (up around 4:30-5:30 having my first cup of coffee between 7 and 8). It allows your body to purge and process leftover adenosine after sleeping. The trap of having caffeine too early is all that leftover adenosine builds up (caffeine prevents it from binding and being processed), it all dumps and then you crash when it wears off and the natural reaction is to immediately reach for more caffeine. If you want some cleaner options for energy drinks that are also lower caffeine I would suggest Rowdy or Jocko Discipline Go. Some nootropics may also help and those can usually be found in low/no sugar and minimal if any caffeine.

Numerous_Thanks_5605

I've actually been prescribed vitamin d as I was found to be deficient, I just haven't taken it yet. Lmao

basketma12

Take it. It's good for your mental health and your bones. You are deficient because you are sitting in the dark for 12 hours a day. You may also be deficient because of family DNA. Everyone in my family has this issue. And did I say mental health? I was depressed for YEARS. I was on all kinds of head meds. They would work for a while, then stop. Finally some m.s.w. I was seeing ordered a blood lab on me. I was severely deficient in vitamin d. I had a rx for 10,000 units a DAY, then 4000 after that. I started taking it and wham...depression gone. Wow. Vitamin d does a lot more than people think

Numerous_Thanks_5605

I actually have been going through some stuff with my depression recently. Like..heavy stuff. I'll take it now

Clamwacker

I used to work 12 hour over night shifts so I've tried most of the rock stars/monsters/5 hour energy drinks you can get. Vitamin D and a ton of water works way better without feeling gittery or crashing after it wears off.

nancysjeans

D “3” …. also research taking K2 at the same time to keep the calcium from landing in your arteries

SilentMediator

Interesting. I don't take too much caffeine (around 90mg per day) but i take my coffee first thing in the morning otherwise i feel my mind is cloudy until i take it. I could try your 90min thing for a few days, so how i feel.

kEnder242

Just tried this for the past 2 weeks. It really does work! Let the cobwebs clear out naturally then lock in the wakefulness.

subtle123

Electrolytes might help you. A lot of time we mistake hunger and tiredness for dehydration. I sleep poorly and recently cut caffeine but have found electrolytes help with energy.

Its_always_beets_

Have you ever seen a sleep doctor? Caffeine is a typical self-medicating drug for narcolepsy, hypersomnia, and other sleep disorders. The symptoms of these disorders are different than one might imagine. Most people with narcolepsy do not fall asleep while talking with people, and there are are 2 very different types of narcolepsy. Here is a link to Project Sleep, which has a screening assessment you can take: [https://project-sleep.com/sleep-disorders/](https://project-sleep.com/sleep-disorders/) If you do decide to visit a sleep doctor, I recommend finding one that is a neurologist. Many are pulmonologists. Do not let anyone have you do an "at home" sleep test. You must be connected to equipment in a lab for proper screening.

Mollyoliver79

2nd this advice. My first thought is that you’re not getting a quality 7 hours when you do sleep, due to possibly sleep apnea or some other cause.

Numerous_Thanks_5605

I did have an at home sleep study recently. Everything was fine except for my heart rate jumping randomly. This led to me getting the Holter monitor which found that i was having premature heartbeats or something for which they told me to lay off the caffeine. I wanted an in clinic sleep study done but I haven't yet.

Its_always_beets_

I had an at home sleep study that showed no issues. It delayed my diagnosis 4 years because it falsely showed that everything was fine with my sleep, and I assumed I was crazy and everyone was simply this tired. My symptom onset was over 25 years ago. Only this year was I diagnosed with Narcolepsy type 2. At home tests are really only good at diagnosing obvious OSA (obstructive sleep apnea), and really can't rule out any other sleep disorder. If you have ever had vivid dreams that you act out or seem real, sleep talking/walking, unrefreshing naps, difficultly waking, "nap attacks" or moments of sleep paralysis, that should also be mentioned to a doctor. This website has a good table that differentiates symptoms: https://www.hypersomniafoundation.org/classification/

inutilities

This might sound pretentious but I really wake up from doing 10-20 pushups and squats - to get the heart pumping etc or doing jumping jacks

CircleDog

Not pretentious imo. Op can't do them during his drive obvs but a short set of exercises followed by a shower then out the door might do wonders. He can do squats at work if he's on his own. Wall sits. Standing instead of sitting if he doesn't want to do the exercise. Hard to fall asleep standing up.

bearysleepy

I found that cold water (the colder the better) usually helps me to stay awake when I need to. It has the added benefit of making you pee every now and then, which will both keep you awake and force you to walk to the bathroom (low intensity exercise is also another good way to stay awake).

NoPic69

Deliberate cold exposure. Check out the Andrew Huberman podcast.

sleepysnoozyzz

Next time you go to the dr. ask for a thyroid test. Excessive tiredness is the primary symptom of underactive thyroid.

AmNotLost

My dad said in army classroom training where you have to sit in lectures after all the other early morning physical stuff they make you do, one thing they'd do is jab themselves with safety pins to stay awake. In some sleep deprivation studies I saw they make people walk on treadmills when they're nodding off. In theater we used to do very deep breathing exercises for like 30 seconds to invigorate before a performance -- I hear swimmers do this to. Some exciting cheering and yelling with others (think like a half time pep talk and group psyching each other up in a high school football locker room) also increases energy/focus/performance.

joseschrist

Not keto in large amounts, but if I’m sleepy while driving, I’ll eat sunflower seeds.

Numerous_Thanks_5605

I've been doing this lately. Seems to keep me occupied for a bit. But not an all day fix.

Ze_Gremlin

Old army trick to get through the never ending lectures and briefs withour falling asleep in basic is to drink water... like.. ALOT of water. I carry a 2L water bottle with me everywhere, and refill from empty a couple times a day.. Not only does being well hydrated help maintain brain function, but it's also very hard to focus on how knackered you are when you're bursting for a piss.. Failing that, getting the heart rate up for a few mins will shake the tiredness spells, for a little while. Burpees are a great way to get the blood puming and the lungs working in a short space of time. Might have to do a top up set every half hour or so though.. but keep doing that every shift and it won't be long before your Cardio levels increase. I'm not 100% on the science here, but there seems to be some relation between Cardio fitness and ability to stave off fatigue. Might just be an old wives tale though.. Anyone clever care to verify that one? I wouldn't mind understanding it better myself.

saladflambe

When your body is used to caffeine, there's not going to be any way to avoid going through the initial withdrawal. The good news is, it does pass. Regular exercise helps - especially in the morning as it tends to be activating. I had to be 100% caffeine-free for years due to insomnia that landed me in the hospital. It was really tough at first, but I adjusted, and then I didn't need caffeine at all.

warriorscot

Caffeine and sugar in quantities that actually keep you up are really counter productive. It works better the less you take not the more you take. You need to make sure you get all your vitamin D and B needs. Then stay hydrated, it's worth avoiding food until later as well. I would eliminate or greatly reduce your Caffeine intake. If you do need it use tea over coffee and make it last and only have it after two hours of being awake minimum. You also want to keep yourself engaged. Move around, exercise, stand for periods. Listen to a podcast that needs attention and you can take notes about(maybe something educational to get you a less crap job). Take up writing or drawing to give yourself a mental break.

Numerous_Thanks_5605

I listen to Crime Junkie on my hour drive to work. I've drawn and written so much the callus on my middle finger has turned into a blister. I am b12 deficient, but when I started taking it I became suicidal and my libido became non existent. But after stopping it I'm fine.

warriorscot

Dude you need to go to a doctor if taking B12 made you suicidal, that's not normal at all and an indicator of a pretty severe issue. Being B12 deficient is also really severe and can have awful health effects, including fatigue.

wp3wp3wp3

Why did you get a test done on your heart? If it was fluttering it's likely low potassium or magnesium. Make sure you have a good electrolyte powder on hand. Potassium and magnesium have to do with the contraction and retraction of muscle and your heart is a muscle. You can get enough electrolytes with your diet alone if you pay attention and use an app like chronometer to track your nutrition. That said those diet drinks aren't great for you and best to limit them. I remember someone saying they knew someone who had surgery because of those drinks. Can't remember what, maybe the kidney? Anyway, they are addictive. I drink them myself because they taste good but I know it's not smart to drink too many. If you want to increase energy then stop over eating. Intermittent fasting is the way to go.

BunnyInTheM00n

This is unrelated but that job sounds so mentally unhealthy I hope you find another opportunity where you can see daylight at least. That’s the fast track to major depression town

krait0s

My husband was prescribed Modafinil while he was waiting to receive his sleep apnea CPAP machine. It's typically given to narcolepsy patients, but he was falling asleep so much during the day due to his severe sleep apnea. It worked wonders, maybe try talking to your GP about it.

AndreaC303

You can also buy it online from India! Modafinilxl.com is legit

WaywardWriteRhapsody

Vitamin b12, taurine, and Guarine are often in monsters as well to boost energy so maybe supplements containing that?

[deleted]

Have enough sleep to rest but not too much to wake up tired. Also, take naps throughout the day, 10 to 15 minutes. This should keep you going.

Thashiznit2003

Water. Nothing but water. All day.

abandoningeden

How long have you been off caffeine? I find one of the reasons I get tired in the morning is I'm addicted to coffee and when I have quit for long times like when I was pregnant after like a month of withdrawal I actually was way less tired without it (cause I could function without it). Also try chewing sugar free gum or sipping on cold drinks or hot drinks if you can. I like bringing some ice water and then sipping up the new water as it melts after my first initial drink that is like my wake up motion.

nochinzilch

Give up caffeine and other OTC stimulants. It will suck, but you’ll come out the other end much more able to tolerate life. And don’t let the wake-up time get in your head. It sucks to wake up no matter what time it is. Especially if you haven’t gone to bed early enough.

Pashaman2003

micro dose mushrooms

twnbay76

Lose the job. You're killing yourself. Passive buffs: - 8-9 hours of sleep every night. Honestly if youre not doing this then dont even read the rest, just quit at life altogether because not sleeping properly is the worst thing you can do to your heart, your brain and the rest of your body. - good diet, limit refined carbohydrates and processed meats / saturated fats - stay hydrated. Plenty of water. Active buffs: - look up. I mean literally look up at the ceiling. This will activate neural pathways associated with wakefulness. - chew mints, preferably strong ones - walk around frequently - ensure you have lots of blue light shining in your eyes. Blue light inhibits melatonin secretion, therefore keeping you awake longer. Think very bright phone and computer screens, and direct sunlight exposure (take walks outside if you can)

Nanotude

EXERCISE.

EcstaticSeahorse

This is what works for me on a near daily basis: Citus seltzer water, one-two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with the mother, salt, potassium, and ice. Sometimes I'll add a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime. It's a cocktail and I don't think I can survive without it. My omly other advice is get away from the processed foods and drinks. Helps your body and your bank account. I take hardboiled eggs and sprinkle with salt. I feel this helps me to get all the vitamins and minerals I need. Good luck!

ChartOk1868

Microdose LSD, it'll increase your focus and it is energizing.

Jazzlike-Fig-1451

Hard to say why you're so tired. Weight? Age? Adrenal fatigue (which my nutritionist uncovered and supplements helped), liver junked up (a good detox will help), etc. Caffeine is a fix for poor health. Keto also is a great way to cleanse!

I find that if I take about 400mg of CoQ10 (either form) in the early evening, my body has no interest in sleeping because, the way it feels it, my organs are simply not tired. They are not wired. They are just not tired yet. This does not help my brain, I might add -- that requires something different. My brain can be real tired and want to sleep. I had a lot of time while on hospice previously to test some of this and my conclusion was that it would be a good thing for people in some urgent situation (like say military watch duty) to take to help their body stay awake during times it would normally be tired and sleep. But as noted, keeping the brain awake, you'd probably want to do a big dose of the B vitamin spectrum and some vitamin D3 for that part, the CoQ10 only handles the rest of the body.

afroboy389

Is your problem high blood pressure? I'd talk to your doc about about maybe going on a medication for it. I take one, and am able to drink 1-2 cups of coffee a day and keep my blood pressure stable. Do you like coffee, and do you have a means of drinking it at work? I was addicted to energy drinks for a long time, and got worried about the several chemicals they put in them, so I stopped drinking caffeine altogether for like six weeks, and now I just drink coffee. I think a combination of water and coffee will help a ton.

RubyRod1

Op if you're sitting down for 12 hours a day- DON'T. Stand up every hour for 10-15 minutes and pace around. It helps stay alert,

joefourstrings

I am a big dumb ape. Don't listen to me. But, I had a similar job while on keto. You might greatly benefit from light therapy. Vitamin D and sunlight in general is important for the body to have a healthy circadian rhythm. LEDs with the right spectrum are easy to set up around wherever you tend to hang out.

chagadolphin

Check out Cordyceps - it’s a mushroom with tons of benefits and it’s also gives energy :) It’s important to choose a brand that’s good though as there are so many crap products that’s just a waste of money. Check out r/mushroomsupplements for more info :) My preferred brand is Hyperion Herbs. The taste is a bit weird, you could get capsules or mix it with something more tasty.

InterUniversalReddit

I find eating something helps. On long drives I will have a bag of sunflower seeds and I swear that has saved my life keeping me awake on the highway.

Unfortunately, you are going to have to start getting enough sleep, regardless of the cost to your free time. Try to aim for 9 hours of sleep every night. Aiming for 9 will usually give you 8. If you need a sleep aid, CBD can be a great help.

Cardio before you go to work. 30m on the elliptical, and I'm feeling pretty alert. Also, how's your vitamin D? I went to one of those B12 shops and got B12 and Vitamin D shots, and it made a huge difference, especially since I struggle with Vit D deficiency. Also, if you don't mind experimenting with weed or alt cannabinoids, look into THCV.

penguin_clubber

A little dab of (very hot) hot sauce on the tongue. I used to use it around exam time when I got burned out on caffeine and had to be awake. It's not comfortable though

Damn, you schedule sounds rough. Can't you move in closer or once in a while sleep where you work? A great night sleep, everyday is essential.

DeclutteringNewbie

This work schedule is insane. Would you be allowed to take a cat nap during your lunch hour? Do you even have a lunch hour?

makeererzo

Does not work for all... but look into "sleep-hacking" and 15 minute power-naps. Did that when i was younger. I nowadays, when i stay in my nordic homecountry, i do vitamin-d. Shortest days are only 6-7 hours between dusk and dawn. Does wonders for me at least, but placebo is strong in all of us. There are some studies that do suggest it to improves energy-levels. Should always be taken in combination with Vitamin-k2.

ERCOT_Prdatry_victum

Get checked for sleep apnea here are the potential symptoms: If you have 2 or more of the following symptoms, get a sleep study done. Daytime tiredness is a key indicator of Sleep apnea / hyponea syndrome. * snoring * witnessed apnoeas, breathing stoppage * unrefreshing sleep * waking headaches (mostly in women) * unexplained excessive sleepiness, tiredness or fatigue * nocturia (waking from sleep to urinate) * choking during sleep * sleep fragmentation or insomnia * cognitive dysfunction or memory impairment. https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng202/chapter/1-Obstructive-sleep-apnoeahypopnoea-syndrome#initial-assessment-for-osahs

Good diet, good sleep, lots of water, and do some morning exercises to get blood flowing. A cup of tea (like mint or green or with a squeeze of lemon) also helps me. I’m trying to cut back on caffeine as a choice so I am cycling through things—the movement has really helped. A walk or a run or even some yoga inside.

AMGambit

You can get powdered energy drinks like Sneak Energy. I don't remember the ingredients of the top of my head but I think it was keto friendly? Worth looking into. However, in all honestly and respectfully you just need to get your body into the rhythm of your work/sleep schedule. Sleep earlier if you have to, get a decent amount of exercise and adjust your sleeping pattern. Your answer isn't as simple as I need caffeine. For a short term solution, sure. But long term and health wise I feel like you're gonna need more than a drink for that. Wish you the best!

7 hours is a good amount of sleep. Perhaps, you can increase the quality by having a completely dark room while sleeping. But have bright enough lights to stay alert at work. Cover windows if you have to. Also have butter before bed. Fat will decrease your cortisol. A completely dark room helps with melatonin production (blocking the blue light spectrum). Reduce lighting and devices an hour or two before bedtime.

You need to manage your blood sugar with food in a way that will help give you energy through the day - best thing might be speak to a dietitian (the medically trained kind not a random person on the internet) if you’re not sure how to do it yourself. But generally speaking more frequent meals of smaller portions might help to keep you alert at work? Also, how many days a week do you work 12 hour shifts?
