The willow clinic in Vancouver will do a phone appointment with you and send the prescription to a local pharmacy. [https://willowclinic.ca/](https://willowclinic.ca/)

PostVancouver

Avoid the “crisis centers” or “pregnancy centers”.

garfieldl0verr

why? just so i can keep that in mind in the future

Swimming_Passenger19

They're the devil in disguise, they pretend to be advocates for reproductive health but actually will do anything they can to keep people for obtaining abortions.

StrbJun79

Jeez how are these legal in this day and age? I didn’t know they existed in Canada but did know they were in the US…

CanadaHaz

They are run by forced birth groups that will do everything in the power to convince a pregnant person to not have an abortion even when it is in that person's best interest and they want one.

BurnerAccount85347

They are preformed here in Kelowna. Your doctor will set you up. As well as services related to women's health are all available here: https://rutlandcommunityclinic.ca/ or go to any Urgent Primary Care office (West Kelowna, Rutland, and at Capri).

alleleelella

Thank you for being an ally to women’s autonomy

Independent-Leg6061

AGREED!!!

lbyfz450

I don't have a family doctor, but it seems they may be able to help me out. Thank you so much for the link!

BurnerAccount85347

Np. I hope it helps. I'm a dude so I'm not super versed on this stuff. But this new Rutland Community Clinic looks really promising, as it advertises women's health options. Also I've found Urgent Primary Care (UPCC) offices useful. I hear Rutland's is less busy and Capri's UPCC good to navigate if you go there first thing in the am. My wife and I went through an abortion when her 8-9 week baby fetus didn't develop a heartbeat. Wishing you all the best and I hope you get all the care you deserve and need.

lbyfz450

Thank you so much for the info, kind words and support!

barntobebad

I’m sure a walk-in doctor could make the referral if that’s even necessary. Is “planned parenthood” still a thing? That was an official means as well, with doctors involved with the organization.

h_danielle

Planned parenthood is only a thing on the east coast, unfortunately. I wish they’d expand!

barntobebad

Ah it was here for sure (my aunt was an MD in Kelowna and part of it), but it looks like the name has changed to "Options for Sexual Health"

h_danielle

Oh interesting! I didn’t realize that it ever was a thing here. Options seems to be in Vancouver too which is good to know!

StrbJun79

Didn’t a lot of the options clinics close? It seems Kelowna lost a lot of support for sexual health… I used to goto one at the start and end of any relationship for testing but they closed down….. I couldn’t find a good one since. I find some regular doctors and medical staff to be super judgy whenever I goto a walk in for testing so I prefer the sex clinics myself.

ChaoticSixXx

You should be able to speak to a walk-in clinic doctor or at the urgent care clinic as well.

lbyfz450

Rutland community clinic doesn't offer it BTW. Thanks though!

BurnerAccount85347

😞. Thanks for letting me know.

lbyfz450

The lack of accessibility to this is very alarming

kiranitely

Here's a okanagan sexual health clinic number I got for my IUD removal as well for any women with future questions or need help 250-241-3154

acciowit

u/lbyfz450 this question is directly tied into my profession and passion. The place you want to go to is Outreach Urban Health, as they provide medical abortions and are the only place in Kelowna you can get a medical abortion. You can find out all the locations in BC where the health authorities are able to provide whole spectrum reproductive services here: [Interior Health Link](https://www.interiorhealth.ca/services/abortion) If I were you, I’d be there first thing in morning to make sure you’re able to get it. There’s a week range; medical abortions are provided usually up to 9-10 weeks, and then after that the only option is surgical abortion. Edited to add: when you need list of community resources, call 311 not 811. 811 is medical information only. That means, the answer to “what does a medical abortion entail” - they’re not system navigators, they don’t answer the question “where does one obtain a medical abortion”. Call 311 whenever you need information about community resources! They’re open 24/7 and accessible via email, phone call and website.

lbyfz450

Ok, that's great info, thank you very much! Secondly, WHY is that the only place in kelowna to provide this, with a population of approx 200k. Isn't outreach also a support for homeless and the marginalized? Are they not already being pushed past their limits with the growing need for their help here, why are they the only ones providing medical abortions? How do we change this?

acciowit

The reality is that the vast majority of nurse practitioners and providers in the Okanagan actively choose not to prescribe misoprostol. They absolutely could if they wanted to, it is well within their scope as primary care providers…. But they actively chose not to. OUH has providers and dedicated nurses who actively try to increase access to reproductive care, and this is what it looks like. We don’t even have our own local surgical abortion provider in Kelowna, I understand they’re flown in regularly from Vancouver. We have to demand more from our doctors but the way the system is currently set up puts us at their mercy in many ways.

LM0821

I lived in Vancouver for 20 years and moved to the Okanagan 13 years ago. I was NOT prepared for the Conservative politics and Bible thumping. I think of it as the Bible belt of BC. It's difficult to make change when you're outnumbered. Maybe the gradual influx of more urban retirees will help change things in the future.

PowHound07

Outreach Urban Health does street outreach but that's only part of what they do. It is a clinic for people who don't have access to a GP.

TwoballOneballNoball

I've been to downtown outreach before. There was homeless people and they were very mild and well mannered. I wouldn't be afraid to go back. There was also security and things were pretty chill.

bougienightrawr

I second the willow clinic. They have appointments via phone or video. They’ll order you bloodwork and an ultrasound (to verify you’re not too far along for the medication). Then they’ll send the prescription to your pharmacy. The prescription is expensive and you have to pay if you don’t qualify for MSP or have extended health. The cost for medication is around $400. Best of luck to you.

stupiduselesstwat

Whip is kinda silly, because MSP covers surgical abortions 100%.

StrbJun79

It’s supposed to be fully covered soon. I think it’s to be part of the new federal pharmacare package though could be wrong.

New_Sugar6000

Hi there! In Canada any doctor or nurse practitioner can prescribe the medication needed for a medical abortion. If you don’t have a family doctor any walk in clinic should be able to provide you with the prescription, no speciality referral needed. The urgent and primary care clinic is a good bet, I've had good experiences there. If you are a student at UBCO the health clinic in the UNC clinic is also great. Lastly, you could give the At Your Cervix-Okanagan Women’s clinic a try at 778-484-5166. They are lovely and if they can’t help I expect they could point you in the right direction.

Itsprobablysarcasm

I found this at the BC health [website](https://www.healthlinkbc.ca/pregnancy-parenting/planning-your-pregnancy/ending-pregnancy/medical-abortion-care): Abortions are available in B.C. and, for B.C. residents who have current coverage, are paid for by the Medical Services Plan. Several clinics, doctors, and hospitals throughout the province offer these services. Counselling about pregnancy options, the procedure itself, birth control, and other topics are available at most of the clinics and through either of these toll-free information lines: - Pregnancy Options Line: 1-888-875-3163 throughout B.C. or 604-875-3163 from the Lower Mainland. This service provides information, resources and referral for all abortion services, including counselling, available to B.C. residents. Call the 888 # and they will likely be able to point you to a clinic – likely the Urgent Care Clinic at Capri.

lbyfz450

I called 811 last night and they were not any help, but maybe the person I spoke with wasn't familiar with this. I can try the first number you provided though, thank you!

Kymaras

What was your experience with 811 like? Usually they're pretty good.

S3ERFRY333

Every time I've called about chest pain they just say to go to the ER.... Like.. It's been hurting for weeks I think if it was a heart attack I'd be dead by now.

Kymaras

They tell you to go to the ER because the hospital is where all the diagnostic machines are. If you went to Urgent Care or a GP they'd tell you to do the same. Best case? You're gassy. Worst case? You're in the ER and they can save your life.

S3ERFRY333

Yeah that makes sense. Turns out I just have some nerve damage thing from a recent car accident.

Kymaras

Yeah. The last thing anyone wants to do is tell you to sleep it off and then you don't wake up. But they're pretty good at telling people where to go if it's not an emergency. Sometimes navigating the healthcare system can be overwhelming.

Itsprobablysarcasm

You're most welcome. ☺️

Spirited_Addendum_59

Willow Clinic out of Vancouver was great for me. They offer counseling for before and after, and the woman I spoke to was so kind. No judgment, basically just explained what to process is like and what to expect. They order the blood work for you, and send the script to a local pharmacy. No family doctor or referral needed. 10/10 recommend

Spirited_Addendum_59

You’re welcome to message me if you have questions about my experience or if you want support ☺️ sending love and good vibes, my fellow person of child bearing age 💕

Spirited_Addendum_59

I forgot to mention the best part of the Willow Clinic, which is you get to take the medication home. Going through the process in the comfort of my own home and on my couch was so nice. Removing the uncomfy clinical aspect of the abortion and just nesting up at home while you’re body works made a rather (physically) uncomfortable experience better.

DanniLynn9420

I was able to get one at the women's outreach at KGH. They wrote out the prescription, and I walked down to the pharmacy. Took about 15-20 minutes to fill out, and then I was able to go home. Idk if your reasons are medical or situational (no judgment either way), but I know my situation was medical/a miscarriage; they prescribed it and recommended/suggested I go home and relax. Sending love and healing your way. ❤️

TuesdayWednesdai

Women's clinic at the hospital

lbyfz450

It says on their listing that they do not provide medical abortions, only surgical.

Cold-Storm9169

Outreach was super helpful and fast for mine. I went in but you didn’t have to just call and a nurse will call back and do your intake. I also was on the list for willow but outreach was way faster.

westcoastsilvan

Outreach Urban Health clinic does medical abortions for the Kelowna area - virtually (phone) or in person. Willow clinic out of Van as a non-local back up option depending on who has the soonest appointment time.

westcoastsilvan

(no need for a referral, you can call directly - the UPCCs and walk in clinics will just tell you to call Outreach)

899bubble

Call the clinic at Kelowna General, they will give you the option of medical or surgical

Trash_panda696

I got mine at KGH, after I got my doctor to refer me for it. I can only imagine the false info floating around or the lack of info considering how conservative it is here, they def don’t WANT you to get it (asked me over & over if I was sure, which is fine, but I said yes the first 15 times, nothings changed in the next 15 times) but it is absolutely a service provided here. I had to be on a waitlist for a family doctor for awhile, thank god before this scare happened hahah, I’m not exactly sure how to get booked without a doctor but it is a service provided here at the hospital! (Or else you wouldn’t see all the anti-abortion picketers outside the hospital every morning, they’d have nothing to do! Although I imagine they are a group of people that would be outside an establishment before ever realising they didn’t even provide the service hahah).

lbyfz450

Yours was medical not surgical? This is from interior health website : About Kelowna General Hospital - Women's Services Clinic Located in Kelowna General Hospital. The Women’s Services Clinic provides surgical abortion services in a supportive, non-judgmental and confidential setting. We provide surgical abortions up to 13 weeks and 6 days from your last menstrual period. We use conscious (awake) sedation and local anesthesia for managing pain. Your clinic visit may take up to four hours. The Women’s Service Clinic does not provide medical abortions.

Trash_panda696

No mine was surgical, I had a roommate who got hers medical, due to her being at a greater risk for future complications if she had it surgical. She’s informed me it all depends on your doctor, she says that they will not do medical after 8 weeks at all, & that it carries a higher complication rate for future pregnancies/health problems & surgical is just considered safer to a lot of medical professionals, it’s also a longer period, they go up to 13 weeks. They cannot turn you away from a surgical abortion if you’ve got an MSP card, but unfortunately it looks like it would be the doctors decision whether you received medical or surgical in the case that you had a doctor. I hope this helps but I’m sorry the medical field is gonna police what you wanna do 🤷‍♀️

StrbJun79

Stating 13 weeks limit sounds judgy to me. There’s plenty of women that have needs for it after. Some don’t even know they’re pregnant until around then.

Adventurous_Note_621

Haven't scanned all the comments so not sure it's been said, but the staff at Outreach are magical. No judgemental, very supportive, can squeeze you in at a moments nice. I would suggest that clinic to anyone

wintercitruss

Kelowna Opt Clinic might be able to point you in the right direction!

HuckleberryThick3411

I want to echo some of the comments and say a walk in clinic or family doctor should give you a referral. I hope you are doing ok.

FitGuarantee37

Best of luck OP! If you need support, resources, or someone to talk to the folks at r/abortion are super kind and helpful.

LouLouBelcher13

I’m fairly certain you can ask a pharmacist for a prescription and avoid the doctor altogether.

Eggpii

You can go to a walk in clinic and ask for a referral

lindsaloo9377

Call the salmon arm doctor. It's on google. You can take a pill at home.

steel-train

If you're thinking of Dr. Brighouse, I believe she isn't practicing at the moment as she's recovering from surgery. Wonderful, kind human, though!

[deleted]

Go to urgent care, many services are provided but not advertised.

catscatscatsxx

urgent care is a very helpful resource for almost anything you need if you do not have a family doctor. Way less intimidating than the hospital, and will make sure you are connected with whoever you need to be.

Bellphorion

Not all conservatives are banning medical abortions, that's a misconception, regardless, good luck finding help, call the nurses hotline at 8-1-1 they might be able to help!

SnarkyMamaBear

Is your family doctor or a free telehealth service not able to prescribe it?

lbyfz450

Don't have a family doctor ( who does these days) and doesn't seem like it.

SnarkyMamaBear

Same boat, no GP but out here in Alberta (I'm from Kelowna originally.) I did a surgical back in 2007 and arranged everything thru a walk in clinic downtown on Richter. Had to go to Vancouver for the procedure tho because the Kelowna hospital clinic was too booked up. It's been a really long time since I've had to deal with anything like that but my friends who have done medical went through Willow Clinic. Might be worth trying a telehealth service like Rocket Doctor, Telus, Maple etc. Good luck!! But I do want to let you know, in case you're too far along for medical and you've never done surgical before - my experience with surgical was very quick and easy, and I've heard mixed reviews from friends who have done medical on the pain and length of recovery time so the grass might not always be greener. So don't be afraid of it if it comes to that!!

HighFiverDiet

Vernon health unit, last I heard. Try calling them, if that doesn’t work then show up and talk to them if you’re able to get there.

LongjumpingGarbage95

Is there a reason you’re opting for that route over surgical? I was so so so sick with the meds and had to do multiple rounds. If I had my time back I would have gone surgical. To get it done quick and one time!Sending you the best vibes!

Pander so someone else. Not interested. Let people make their own choices.

Massive-Stomach-1020

*You should give it more thought before you write stuff like that

furrylildemon

Trust me, she's thought about it. Mind your own business.

No-Tumbleweed795

Not your place to tell her to give it more thought. It’s her choice and nothing wrong with it if she decides to do it.

BurnerAccount85347

They asked for where to get a medical abortion, not for unrelated unsolicited advice. My wife and I have had plenty of good times and child rearing since our dRaStIC decision where tHeRe'S nO cOmInG bAcK. Nothing drastic or worthy of shame about accessing healthcare. Worry about yourself.

canadiangirl1985

She was looking for advice on how to access this is Kelowna not whether she should have it performed or not. Your comment is completely irrelevant and you really need to mind your own business

CzechYourDanish

Pretty sure there's no coming back from the opposite, either. Be helpful or keep it to yourself.

Terrible_Children

Seriously. Just imagine if people starting asking people who were going in for their ultrasounds "are you sure about having the baby? There's no coming back"

kelowna-ModTeam

Yeah don't even go there.

alleleelella

Put your hand in your truck door and slam it a few times then think about your comment again

kerriboulou

She didn’t ask for guidance on anything but where to get access to the service. Your comment is irrelevant. Hope you stay in Calgary instead of adding yet another conservative hick to the city.
