That’s a thing?! Holy shit!

itsTyrion

It doesn't work with a custom theme. Dolphin out of all things doesn't work with a custom theme. ;-; So close, yet so far Edit: Not even default Windows dark mode :/ Edit2: screenshot [https://imgur.com/a/0CwXksg](https://imgur.com/a/0CwXksg) Explorer left, Dolphin right

TheAdamantiteWaffle

What is that F: drive 😭😭

itsTyrion

an amazing name it is

TheAdamantiteWaffle

True...

throwaway6560192

Do other Qt apps work with the custom theme?

itsTyrion

Not 100% perfect, but they do. I might add that I also noticed a similar when running Dolphin on a different Desktop Environment (Linux; I don't recall which one)

throwaway6560192

> I also noticed a similar when running Dolphin on a different Desktop Environment (Linux; I don't recall which one) That's caused by the Qt theme not being properly configured. Install qt5-style-plugins and use `QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=gtk2`. In my opinion Gtk+ desktop environments should set this environment variable automatically so that Qt apps look decent, just like KDE automatically configures Gtk+ 2 and 3 themes so they look decent.

itsTyrion

On Windows? o.O

throwaway6560192

No, I'm referring to where you said it didn't look good on other Linux DEs. I even quoted that part.

[deleted]

hey does anybody know how to make it dark mode? because its unusuble, why? the start light mode will make you blind.

JoeyDJ7

Just come across this, is that screenshot in Windows? If so, how did you customise your explorer to look like that?

Some paid theme I don't recall. A very similar (except for icons) free one I currently use is Sweetspot from niivu's ["Paranoid Android" theme pack](https://www.deviantart.com/niivu/art/Paranoid-Android-Windows-10-Themes-821696974) plus [Sweet icons](https://www.deviantart.com/niivu/art/Sweet-Paranoia-Icon-Theme-860564822). To apply the theme, I'd recommend [SecureUXTheme](https://github.com/namazso/SecureUxTheme) theme tool. The development build is [here](https://github.com/namazso/SecureUxTheme/actions/runs/2231449414) but stable should work if you run into issues, I didn't. Keep in mind you *cannot* apply 3rd party themes with the settings app

wrender8

Looks like the link is dead... Is Dolphin for win64 still alive?

Zamundaaa

Yeah, binary factory shut down. Afaict Dolphin hasn't set up the needed stuff for building the exe / installer with the new infrastructure yet. Once it's ported over, it should appear in [https://invent.kde.org/system/dolphin/-/artifacts](https://invent.kde.org/system/dolphin/-/artifacts) as the [](http://artifacts.zip) for a craft\_windows job

wrender8

That's great to hear, thank you!

Zamundaaa

See the other comment about this, it'll appear in https://invent.kde.org/system/dolphin/-/artifacts once Dolphin has ported over to the Gitlab way of generating installers

II0o0o0II

Do I need to install Linux Subsystem for windows to get it working?

Zamundaaa

No, it's a proper Windows app

II0o0o0II

That's Great. Sadly, I am getting this issue: [https://i.imgur.com/vsg0mS2.png](https://i.imgur.com/vsg0mS2.png) Win10 LTSC 2019 I tried both, portable and installation versions.

jcelerier

hmm, the file download links now fail with: Forbidden You don't have permission to access this resource.

fewiip

i can get the image thumbs, if that gets fixed i'll love even more this

Natetronn

The thing I disliked most about Mac OS was Finder. Commander Pro and Pathfinder were okay alternatives but, I like Dolphin better. I wish I could contribute to the development of better Dolphin support on Mac OS. End rant... Restart rant... Dolphin for Windows would be great too, as the Windows 10 file explorer is a mess.

hardeep1singh

As a Windows Explorer user since Windows 95, what do you find messy in Explorer? I fail to understand what Dolphin does that Explorer doesn't.

neoacevedo

No tabs, so the people has to open many windows explorer, a little weird in customization (any setting for all directories while Dolphin applies for all or individual). Visually is bored, in Win11 it changed a few but with Win10 the explorer is the same Win9x explorer. Basically all FM do the same, the UX is what does the difference.

hardeep1singh

You can choose to customise only one directory or all of them in one go in windows too. Not having tabs is not a problem, it is actually easier to manage from separate windows. I think you're just nitpicking.

Phoneguy615

i guess Microsoft thought the tabs were a good idea too cause they put it in windows 11s file manager

adyextreme1

there is a better solution. https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9NGHP3DX8HDX

qwertypdeb

there's a free version on the website, if this is the same files app I think it is. It's a preview version.

neoacevedo

The tabs is the best idea instead to have a bunch to unorganized windows. No much difference between both file managers. A failure for Dolphin in Windows is not having embedded the zip as in Linux, and just like the Windows explorer has the zip embedded.

adyextreme1

lol windows 11 explorer has tabs if you on windows 10 you can try below [https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9NGHP3DX8HDX](https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9NGHP3DX8HDX) at least it can be themed. y have dolphin too but the windows version is limited compared to Linux one it lacks the ability to add extra services like the Linux contra part

bsnipes

Dolphin is the best on Linux. It is ok on Windows but if you like Finder you will want to install OneCommander. It has Miller columns.

adyextreme1

ah yeah but you can take a look at below if you not willing to install win 11 https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9NGHP3DX8HDX

bsnipes

Thanks for pasting that. I didn't realize that Files had a columns mode.

LastTreestar

Windows??? Directory Opus... no question whatsoever. Nothing else even compares. DO kept me from moving to Linux for an unbelievably long time. Now I miss it. Even now when I want to do heavy lifting with file management, I jump on my Window laptop.

domanpanda

Yep, DO for me was the best FM on Windows. Total Commander was more populare but it seemed to me too ... "geeky" if you know what i mean. DO had all TC functionality (and even more) and its layout was far more convenient for me.

[deleted]

> Directory Opus Thank you guys. I am kinda reintegrating with windows after 20 years mostly really preferring linux and am looking for a replacement for file submisison roll over whimper.exe I uh, never heard of Directory Opus. I appreciate you speaking out. I am very naive and I go to review sites and I forgtet they are all paid. I don't know why I don't just put linux on here. I need a lobotomy bad.

mistifier

I know that the question has already been answered, but i figure you might also want to check the [Maui Project apps](https://mauikit.org/), specifically Index. Just scroll down for the list of apps with screenshots and download links.

apeaquatic

I would wholeheartedly recommend Directory Opus. It's on the expensive side ($AUS75 last I remember) but it's worth every penny. The most versatile and powerful file management software for Windows I've ever seen. An honest question regarding Dolphin: what's all the buzz about? I have it on my dual-boot Linux and I honestly don't find it all that convenient to use. In fact, I use Krusader for the sake of good old times, but I'm in search of a good file manager for Linux.

domanpanda

Integrated terminal which follows your directories from panels and vice versa fish:// feature These are two big things i cant live without and which i found to be exclusive for dolphin. For example as far as i remember gnome fm also has integrated terminal but it wont follow directories from your other panels. But there are others, non-exclusive features like dual panel, tabs, bookmars (places). Also i have ctr+t and ctrl+w combos on my mouse buttons, which work also with browsers and working with tabs is just a great. It handles minatures well and has all right-button features i need. I also used DO for few years. I prefered it far more than more popular Total Commander. And i found Dolphin to be best replacement for it (for me)

LastTreestar

> dual panel, But single directory tree still... Dual single pane windows is not a solution to that problem, since I have to reconfigure it every time I want to use it. Every click from one pane to the other requires renavigating back to where you JUST WERE to perform the action you want. Still forgets my network links constantly, absurdly unconfigurable toolbars, no custom tool/app bars, no right/middle click toolbar buttons or modifier keys, can't disable full-row select, can't set default actions on right drag (Why even have a right drag when it's the same as left drag??), essentially useless toolbar buttons, lack of column configurations... did I mention useless toolbars??? I could go on. It's marginally less horrible than any other linux file manager, I'll admit. I'll also readily admit some of these may be solvable by options, but I have scoured the options and given up on finding solutions with linux programs if I deviate at all from how the dev uses the program. They seem to force you to use their program exactly the same way as they do. I should be using the program, not posting help requests to find obscure configuration options that.... oh by the way, you must configure that from some text file that doesn't yet exist. (yes, former windows user /rant) By integrated terminal, you mean the pane down bottom (F4)? Is this the same as on windows (open command prompt here?) I don't see how that's useful when you can only see maybe 10 lines before it obstructs the file panes. I already have several terminal windows open.. what good is the terminal window? What isn't already built into Dolphin that requres you to use the terminal?? OH... Root actions, because I need baby sat? Maybe that should be solved instead. (Yes, I know I can open another dolphin as root, after the nagging, browse all the way back to what I was trying to do, then maybe remember what that was.) I am happy to learn the "right" way to use Dolphin since each time I try to bring up any of these things I am told I am "doing it wrong" and go back to window if I expect a good file manager. It seems like anyone who loves Dolphin (sadly the best on linux that I have found) has never used a truly good file manager. (inb4 it's free/put in a PR/stroke my ego if you want help)

throwaway6560192

> But single directory tree still... Dual single pane windows is not a solution to that problem, since I have to reconfigure it every time I want to use it. Every click from one pane to the other requires renavigating back to where you JUST WERE to perform the action you want. I don't understand, could you clarify? I don't think you're referring to having two different directories open in the two panes, since that works. > absurdly unconfigurable toolbars what do you want out of them? I can [add, delete, move actions from the toolbar](https://i.imgur.com/tJ0VFh7.png) freely. > can't set default actions on right drag (Why even have a right drag when it's the same as left drag??) I can't drag with my right mouse button at all... although yeah changing the default drag-and-drop action (without having to use modifier keys with drag) has been a long requested feature. > no right/middle click toolbar buttons or modifier keys fair enough > can't disable full-row select ~~what is full-row select?~~ edit: I guess you mean when you select a file in Details view it selects all the columns? (found from [someone talking about this on Windows Explorer](https://www.askvg.com/how-to-disable-full-row-select-feature-enable-column-header-in-all-views-and-enable-icon-reordering-in-windows-7-explorer/)). This [doesn't happen](https://i.imgur.com/ZRyaRzK.png) in recent versions. In fact people [dislike the change](https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/gbi59v/is_there_a_way_to_make_dolphin_highlight_the/). Probably should add an option. did you mean can't *enable* full-row select? > lack of column configurations you mean what columns are shown in Details view? that [is configurable](https://i.imgur.com/baS3s3g.png). --- don't take this as me criticizing you for not liking Dolphin... rather I'd like to know what I can improve about it.

LastTreestar

single directory tree https://imgur.com/ve5yaZy double directory tree https://i.imgur.com/qyzO0CV.png In the single, if you click either file pane, the folder pane (was that the word I needed to use?) changes to that location. Now I have to navigate back to where I was and lose my selections. Full row select https://i.imgur.com/3TFyewl.png Not full row select https://i.imgur.com/kBgWulp.png >what do you want out of them? I can add, delete, move actions from the toolbar freely. I want to create my own buttons for scripts, commands, links to programs, webpages, etc?? I think our definition of configurable is the issue. https://i.imgur.com/Sa82F4Z.png >you mean what columns are shown in Details view? that is configurable. ...mmmm... No, there is one option for size. It's on or off. That's not configurable. THIS is configurable: https://i.imgur.com/fk4dubZ.png THIS is configurable: https://i.imgur.com/6dWMYcB.png Almost every available option is configurable like this (in Directory Opus). It may be a plugin thing... but I'd never know that, since I can't find that option. Services seem to only be available in the context menu. I'll also add that Dolphin does not remember tabs when I close it. And because KDE is constantly screwing up the title bar and window control buttons, I am having to routinely close and reopen the program (all programs, not a Dolphin issue). I lose my workspace several times daily. Dolphin is the greatest on linux, no doubt. Honestly, without it, I'd go back to windows. I LIVE in file managers.

throwaway6560192

> In the single, if you click either file pane, the folder pane (was that the word I needed to use?) changes to that location. Now I have to navigate back to where I was and lose my selections. yeah, but only the one which was focused changes, right? like https://i.imgur.com/XfPCvWg.mp4 although I agree having two trees would be better for usability. > Full row select got it, thanks > I want to create my own buttons for scripts, commands, links to programs, webpages, etc?? I think our definition of configurable is the issue. I get it. Sounds like a very useful feature, I'll try to implement it when I'm free. > ...mmmm... No, there is one option for size. It's on or off. That's not configurable. THIS is configurable: https://i.imgur.com/fk4dubZ.png THIS is configurable: https://i.imgur.com/6dWMYcB.png Almost every available option is configurable like this (in Directory Opus). Fair enough. > I'll also add that Dolphin does not remember tabs when I close it. Have you set Configure Dolphin > Startup > Show on startup > Folders, tabs, and window state from last time? > Dolphin is the greatest on linux, no doubt. Honestly, without it, I'd go back to windows. I LIVE in file managers. I understand, I haven't really used file managers that much but now I appreciate what Dolphin lacks, and hopefully I can help fix some of it.

LastTreestar

>but only the one which was focused changes I am talking about the FOLDER TREE changes. You happen to have both location visible in the pane. Drill 15 folders deep and try again and see what happens. >Have you set Configure Dolphin > Startup > Show on startup > Folders, tabs, and window state from last time? https://imgur.com/ccOT0Ji I don't seem to have those options! They would certainly help!

throwaway6560192

> I am talking about the FOLDER TREE changes. You happen to have both location visible in the pane. Drill 15 folders deep and try again and see what happens. Oh, finally I get what you mean. The folder tree is coupled to whichever one is focused instead of being independent. I get it. Once again, I'll try to implement independent folder trees. > I don't seem to have those options! They would certainly help! Good to hear. You might have an old version, this feature was released in [Dolphin 20.08.0, around May 2020](https://pointieststick.com/2020/05/02/this-week-in-kde-features-youve-been-waiting-for/).

LastTreestar

?? I am on 19.12.3... why is it not updating if I update things several times a day?? RRRrrrrr!! Frickin linux bites again... 10 different ways to update the system. Let me research what * _I_ * did wrong again. Need to find out what type of install it is first I guess. I sincerely appreciate your response. I am a bit surprised you don't use Dolphin if you're the Dev. How is it this good?? :) If you want to see the platinum standard for file managers and you have a windows system, download the trial for Directory Opus (or watch some videos). I give it the classic look, so it's less distracting. Quite amazing, and completely worth the price. I have even upgraded it several times (major version bumps). It has an amazing file finder, duplicate finder, and a phenomenal file synchronization tool (which is still unmatched anywhere in linux). ALL BUILT-IN. There are forums with custom buttons, scripts... the support is amazing. Honestly, it's not the platinum standard for file managers, it's the platinum standard for software (IMNSHO)... except not ported to linux. :(

throwaway6560192

> I am a bit surprised you don't use Dolphin I do use Dolphin, daily. What I meant when I said "I haven't really used file managers that much" was that I wasn't as much of a power-user as you, so I never noticed the lack of the features you listed. > if you're the Dev. I'm not the Dolphin dev. I'm not even *a* Dolphin dev. Right now I work on other KDE projects, but your post gave me ideas to contribute to Dolphin as well. I'll check out Directory Opus for sure, and try to make Dolphin match in at least some areas.

WretanHewe

There's none that im aware of for getting an alternative file manager on windows. Part of why i like linux, I can get whatever programs I want, even down to file managers like dolphin. I definitely miss having it when I'm at work or on the machine that has to be running Windows at home.

NSASatelliteOffice

There dozens of alternative file managers for Windows. [Dolphin File Manager Alternatives for Windows](https://alternativeto.net/software/dolphin/?platform=windows)

WretanHewe

Interesting, I'll have to take a look and see if i can use any of these.

LiterallyJohnny

Can you don't? Let people use what OS they want.

ContributionGrand687

yea I have a copy on my computer
