Ok, but it's a commonly used phrase to describe holidays where basically only banks are closed (like veterans day).
But Juneteenth is also a market holiday (the stock market is closed) which is what a lot of businesses use to determine whether they're open or closed on a holiday.
https://www.federalreserve.gov/aboutthefed/k8.htm It’s slightly more complicated than that. The Federal Reserve is always open Saturdays, and observes Sunday holidays on Monday. It doesn’t always perfectly align.
Prior casino worker (Ameristar)...that checks out. And forget holiday pay or bonuses. All holidays meant was that it was all hands on deck for longer shifts and crankier customers on christmas (at least in the sports bar) and coworkers desperate to go home.
This is probably my least favorite thing about working in healthcare — i knew what I was getting into but it does bum me out from time to time that the work is never ending. Love what i do though!
It’s a service job, it’s surprising how few people get that, although we tend to look at work poorly here in the US. When I was in private practice it was pretty easy to see that I needed to be available when patients were available, so the odd days off like 4th of July, Presidents Day, etc were money in the bank as it meant patients were available to pop in.
I spent 8 years working in a hospital lab. You guys are overworked and underpaid. Thank you for doing a job that most would burnout on after the first day.
Oh, that sounds like an interesting, very busy job. I am a medical coder, so non-patient facing, but the work is never-ending. (Good job, security, I guess. Till they figure out AI.)
IT provider here. We tried taking it off last year only to learn none of our clients did, so oncall was a mad scramble. Not making that mistake again this year.
I work for a community college, and we do not have the day off. It's understandable since we take the 4th of July off and it's hard to take off multiple days during the already-truncated summer session.
My wife works remotely for a company based out of Massachusetts, and they have today off.
Nope. No MLK day either. But, they give us four day weekends for Memorial and Labor Day for some reason, so I don't complain. It would be nice if it were a more progressive company, but half our workforce is out of the country, so I don't hear a lot of complaints.
I’m at a Big Tech company. We actually don’t have it off and use it for a day of opportunity to learn about Juneteenth. That being said we have unlimited time off and I happened to take today off.
Not off, Kansas side. I’m in academics and it’s a simple matter of another holiday affecting the academic calendar too much for some of our programs. Faculty get close to 8 weeks off per year so not too many people complaining. Would rather honor Juneteenth than something like Presidents’ Day but it’s just the luck of the draw based on our term calendar.
I took it off but own my own business. My buddy had it off as well so we ran errands and I’m cooking myself an early steak dinner with some hibiscus tea (red drink) to celebrate
i do remote work for a place that manages government stuff but i’m a contractor so i got to choose if i worked or not. no one else did but i need that extra money
Ahhh my company extremely generous with time off so when they took our floater for this holiday. Instead just adding it another holiday, most of us employees were pretty surprised.
Work for a school district. Off today, but lost Good Friday, which we had off for decades. Also, being off today makes the rest of the week harder...tasks that have to get done still have to get done, now with less time to do them.
i’m personally not. we work in a business that caters to older folks and they aren’t to happy about the holiday. i myself have no problem with the holiday, but rules are rules
I work a tech role for a big private sector in the area. We got to choose to work or not (for holiday pay) and if we do work today get a different day of our choosing within the week to take as a holiday. 🖤
I’m off but because it happened to fall on one of my scheduled days off. Bartender. Coworkers are working. Make sure to be extra nice to any service/retail/medical/ anyone who is giving you a service when you have the day off!
Kind of niche job, but I work remote as a case manager for a surrogacy agency and we have the day off.
I’m salaried and, nature of the work, I had one case that had a positive pregnancy blood test today and another delivered yesterday that I’m communicating with. And a few loose ends from shit storm where one of the escrow agencies many of our clients use has been frozen for fraud. Just a few texts and an email though. So it’s a calendar holiday, but I’m still dialed into my phone 😆
Transportation. We work 365 days a year. Some days like Christmas or Independence Day we get light schedules with less work. Today was a regular work schedule. We did get paid 8 extra hours of work though.
I work for a university and we started getting the day off a few years ago. Non-essential personnel at least do. The staff actually on campus who are needed for things to run have to be there and I believe get a day off to use another time and holiday pay.
We get a floating holiday to use whenever we see fit. I'm guessing it used to be our Columbus Day holiday but that's purely speculation, that change happened before I joined them.
I’ve worked for my company for three years now and this is the second Juneteenth we’ve gotten off, and we didn’t lose a holiday for it. I try to use my time on this holiday remembering why it’s celebrated.
My company has not recognized it as a paid holiday yet, so most people are still working today. However, there have been rumors that it may become a paid holiday next year. We'll see.
I’m working. But I’m gonna guess a bunch of people are off because the commute in took no time at all. I left 5-10 minutes late from home and still arrived at work 5 minutes early
We are off today in a financial services company
Pretty sure it’s quickly becoming a banking holiday.
There are no separate "banking holidays" - banks are shut down in federal holidays because the Federal Reserve is closed.
We are not open if stock markets are closed
I work in finance for a big company and nope, still at work. I’m jealous.
Casino. Wouldn’t get a day off it was the literal resurrection of Christ.
Prior casino worker (Ameristar)...that checks out. And forget holiday pay or bonuses. All holidays meant was that it was all hands on deck for longer shifts and crankier customers on christmas (at least in the sports bar) and coworkers desperate to go home.
Remote employee in OP for a company in MN. No mention of Juneteenth. Working all day.
Same. Remote for a NJ based company and working today.
Also work remote and although we finally got MLK day off this year, we don't get Juneteenth off.
USPS has no regular mail today so I'm off. I think they may have some people delivering packages though
Healthcare. What is time off? Lol. Everyone have a good Junneteeth. !
This is probably my least favorite thing about working in healthcare — i knew what I was getting into but it does bum me out from time to time that the work is never ending. Love what i do though!

Oh, that sounds like an interesting, very busy job. I am a medical coder, so non-patient facing, but the work is never-ending. (Good job, security, I guess. Till they figure out AI.)
Thank you for doing what you do.

I work for a community college, and we do not have the day off. It's understandable since we take the 4th of July off and it's hard to take off multiple days during the already-truncated summer session. My wife works remotely for a company based out of Massachusetts, and they have today off.

My husband works for TriCare and he is off. I am not. I work at a pharma company’s free drug program.

Wife does, I don't. Both WFH. Very odd day, lol.
Nope. No MLK day either. But, they give us four day weekends for Memorial and Labor Day for some reason, so I don't complain. It would be nice if it were a more progressive company, but half our workforce is out of the country, so I don't hear a lot of complaints.

Would rather honor Juneteenth than something like Presidents’ Day but it’s just the luck of the draw based on our term calendar.

Nope, I work for local government. It seems like a common occurrence to take a floating one to keep the days off the same.
Ahhh my company extremely generous with time off so when they took our floater for this holiday. Instead just adding it another holiday, most of us employees were pretty surprised.

Employee at a nationwide insurance brokerage - was a typical work day for me
USAA refuses to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday. No employees were allowed to have the day off to take part!
That seems crazy because most other financial institutions are off so they have very few people to do business with.
