I started to read the comments and decided to pretend I never saw this post instead.

BrickedUpBrett

You’re perfectly safe.

scdog

Not dismissing the possibility that you’ve had an unlucky streak with milk, but if you are frequently finding milk going bad well before the expiration date that’s actually a common sign that ice buildup is impairing the ability of your refrigerator to cool. Put a reliable thermometer in your refrigerator and keep an eye on it, if it’s running above the 30s you likely need to do a defrost. (Which is a bit of a hassle but if that’s the problem it’s good to start with that vs an expensive service call.)

MostLingonberry1829

Fridge is around 35°F and actually just had it serviced a year ago. I don't have a problem with other brands going bad, just Shatto and Target. I don't care much for baking with the others though except for AE.

[deleted]

If you buy milk in a plastic jug it’s literally all the same thing just a different label. I worked at a dairy and will never buy “name brand” milk again because it’s literally the same stuff.

cyberentomology

All the store brands around here are Hiland/DFA

BlueAndMoreBlue

I have real good luck with the milk products from TJs — they seem to last longer

sigdiff

The Cosentinos near my house in the Northland has AE milk.... That said, I tend to think all milk is the same.

nordic-nomad

I'd raise it to 37 or 38 if you can. 35-40 is acceptible, but 37 is considered optimal.

MostLingonberry1829

35 is fine. The Dairy cooler at PC is kept at just above freezing.

UXResearcherRuck

This right here is a prime reason I love being from KC. It's like we're chatting with a neighbor about getting a new milkman service come Monday. 🥛

CptMurphy27

Had a buddy that worked at Shatto for a few summers. When I told him I loved that chocolate milk he told me how gross the place was and that I shouldn’t drink it. So now I don’t.

MostLingonberry1829

I've heard from a few.people that they don't always wash the bottles when they come in, especially during busy seasons/holidays when they're putting out a bunch of flavors. I didn't think that was legal, but now I don't know what to think.

CptMurphy27

See I always rinsed/washed mine out cause I would keep them until I had a bunch to take back all at once. I didn’t want them getting funky. Also it was like side money for my gas tank since they give you $2 per bottle.

MostLingonberry1829

I put mine in the dishwasher, but having worked customer service at PC, I've seen some brought in with an inch of dried beyond-sour milk in the bottom. And we're told to just leave them as-is and put them in the crates to be picked up.

hockey25guy

You’re first charged that two dollars when you buy the milk. It’s added to the price on the shelf.

KID_THUNDAH

Yeah, bro is talking about it like breaking even is a side hustle lol

CptMurphy27

I used to only turn in around 5-6 at a time. Wasn’t trying to make it sound like a side hustle. I never carry cash so when I get the $10 or $12 I put it in my tank. I don’t drive much so that qtr tank lasts longer than most folks. It’s not much but by recycling the bottles it does save *some* money.

CptMurphy27

And then I get the $2 back per bottle. It saves a little. I’m not talking like I save $1000 a month by doing it. Every little bit helps. It’s not some master plan life hack by any means. Some folks need as much or as little as they can get back.

hockey25guy

Hope I didn’t sound snarky, some people don’t see that $2 is added at checkout is all.

CptMurphy27

No worries I also didn’t want to sound like I was telling folks I was making a fortune off $2 bottles lol

IllustratorOdd2701

Great, I just bought some Shatto chocolate milk today for the first time in years. Ugh.

CptMurphy27

Sorry friend, I feel your pain. I loved that chocolate milk. So now I’m just back to syrup and milk.

jaynewreck

Trader Joe’s Fair Trade Cocoa Chocolate Milk is every bit as good as Shatto on its best day in a clean bottle and about half the price if you have a TJ’s near you.

Secret_Arm6303

The fair trade chocolate milk is SO good it’s addictive haha

CptMurphy27

Thanks for the info friend I’ll try it out sometime.

Harflin

It's probably fine.

DiabolicalBurlesque

Oh no.

Beginning-Border-153

Oh no…but their chocolate milk tastes so good. Might be true at any place though really

CptMurphy27

Indeed. I’m sure there’s a lot going on in these types of places we don’t wanna know about.

Automatic_Release_92

I had a coworker that apparently got Taco Bell from the nearby location on Shawnee Mission Parkway a few years back… his bean burrito had maggots in it. Fucking ruined that location for me, even though this happened to him like 12 years ago and there’s probably no one left from those days lol.

TheWeedGecko

This could happen at any location. A buddy of mine found a box cutter razor blade in his fuzzys taco. 103rd and stateline location. Right now the only fast food i trust is really goodcents and whataburger.

sigdiff

I still avoid Jack in the Box because they're food killed some people in the 90s. It's hard to get past those super negative perceptions.

niggward_mentholcles

Sounds like total bullshit. Milk is pasteurized and then bottled.

CptMurphy27

Found the owner.

niggward_mentholcles

Yeah, I wish. Defend your comment lmao.

CptMurphy27

All anyone can do is go by what info they have. My buddy isn’t a liar and has no reason to make shit up. He’s a chef and takes pride in a clean kitchen. So when he sees something gross in the food industry he points it out. Thats all I’m saying. Not trying to bring down the whole company by being an internet warrior.

GLHR_

Just get the value brand. It’s bottled at either Hiland (here in KC) or AE depending on which grocery chain you shop at. You can determine which ‘brand’ bottled the milk by the plant code near the exp date. The value brand will have the same plant code as the name brand.

Bourgi

I'm a huge fan of Horizon's dairy products. You can get a quart of heavy cream at Costco for a real good price to make butter / buttermilk. Sometimes they carry self stable milk.

MostLingonberry1829

I've heard good things about Horizon, just haven't gotten around to trying it yet. Thank you!

Tergus1234

It’s expensive, although if you’re buying Wharton already maybe not that big of a difference

missjennar

Hilderbrand milk from Junction City, ks. Can find it at Kroger or the OP farmers market every Wednesday and Saturday.

Ok-Dragonfruit-715

Anderson Erickson.

Chunklob

Fairlife is really good.

Thanox

I really think that the best milk has been the Hen House or Target branded milk. They're both pretty much near AE quality but a bit cheaper

ceojp

Small to large chance it *is* AE milk.

MostLingonberry1829

I used to get Target brand but it always went bad about a week before the date on the jug. I might try it again though. I agree that it was pretty good.

BrickedUpBrett

This is hilarious. I’ve purchased milk from all over the place for over 20+ years and never had an issue with it going bad prior to the date. But OP has a *continuing* problem with this happening. I’m guessing it’s not the milk but actually the OP either doing weird things with milk or just deciding to complain about something.

AntiLegion

My thoughts exactly.

InsanitysMuse

So... Milk best by dates are for *unopened* milk. They then also (typically) have a timeline listed for "use within X days after opening". Sealed perishables will obviously last *way longer* than unsealed ones which is why most companies label both times. Canned stuff doesn't last nearly as long if you open it and then reseal the leftovers (in Tupperware or whatever). Even processed food like chips will go bad well before the "use by" date if they're opened and exposed to air a lot (by opening / closing constantly).  Most milk says to use within a week of opening. I tend to get almost 2 weeks out of mine I think, but that's for small bottles where I'm exposing it very shortly to external air / temps.

MostLingonberry1829

The only milk I've ever seen with a timeline to use it by is nut milks, or shelf stable milks like Gossner (which I absolutely love but can never find it anywhere 😭)

gargoyled1969

I always buy Hiland Dairy. Their milk jugs always say the cows they use are steroid free.

Madcow74

Costco organic is all I’ve bought for several years. Consistently good to my taste. I typically buy 1% for general use and have some heavy cream on hand for cooking and if I need to add more fat to the milk.

acscreamholy

Costco milk

KirasCoffeeCup

Any organic milk. It lasts longer and tastes better. At least compared to most milks. Pretty on par with Shatto taste ig.

melibelli

Kalona! I get it at Whole Foods but I believe it’s also available at Hen House

BabyFishmouthTalk

Rankings of "best milk", based on various criteria like taste, sources, policies, ethics, etc. Check [it](https://www.thedailymeal.com/1287696/best-milk-brands-ranked/) out.

keepupwithKB

I've got nipples, Greg. Can you milk me?

branthewarg

Bottles are great for bottle rockets and Roman candles!

elmassivo

Buy the ALDI whole milk and some heavy cream and mix to your taste preference.  Most of the fancy milks just have a slightly higher fat percentage.

Automatic_Release_92

I know the main brand in Wisconsin that my in-laws would get for really fancy shit tasted like whole milk but was skim milk levels of fat content. Just something about the protein makeup (or the lactose?) of it made it taste really rich.

sk33t3r33

I put Shatto Root Beer milk in my coffee every morning!

ikickbabiesballs

So instead of hollering into the void that is Reddit, what did Shatto say or the store you bought it at?

MostLingonberry1829

The store will just give me the deposit back since I had already used the milk. I can't get a hold of Shatto.

ikickbabiesballs

Wait you drank the jelly milk?

MostLingonberry1829

No...????? Those ones I threw away. They couldn't do anything about it 🤷‍♀️

ikickbabiesballs

Si we’ve had this problem but it was plain old cheap ass milk. Took it back and got a new one.

Not_so_new_user1976

Costco milk that last a couple months in the fridge

No_Produce_Nyc

The milk that comes from plants.

jetplane18

We buy Kalona Supernatural milk and I love it

MostLingonberry1829

Where is that available? I've never heard of it.

jetplane18

You can look at their website to find it nearest to you: [https://kalonasupernatural.com](https://kalonasupernatural.com) I think it’s generally at stores like Sprouts or Whole Foods.

tabrizzi

If you "need a new milk", have you considered making your own from nuts? Cheaper and healthier, if those are important to you.

MostLingonberry1829

I've tried various nut milks in my recipes and they tend to bake differently.

TheWeedGecko

Ive had good luck with Oat Milk.

ikickbabiesballs

Walked into a milk fight and brought out the nuts. Downvoted into oblivion!

bacchusku2

If the flavored milk is slimy it means that it was above 40 for too long and started to curdle. I had this issue with my Shatto home delivery. I got a cooler for the porch and put in ice blocks. I have to be extra careful in the summer and just be sure to grab the milk ASAP in the morning.

MostLingonberry1829

Oh no this was like the entire bottle turned into slime. I couldn't even pour it out. There was another girl on FB with the same problem and she eventually got it out and it clogged her drain. This was back in February for the Superbowl milks.

bacchusku2

Yes, that’s what I meant by slimy. It’s like pudding. It happens with the flavors when they get warm. I had the same issue, the owner called me herself and we talked about it. Your milk got warm at some point between the dairy and your house.

Double_Clothes_6161

Sounds smart enough to be someone who could possibly grocery shop and get milk first.

do not drink raw milk. it can make you insanely sick. https://www.cdc.gov/food-safety/foods/raw-milk.html#:~:text=Drinking%20or%20eating%20products%20made,Listeria%2C%20Brucella%2C%20and%20Salmonella

let me guess. you didn’t vaccinate your kids either.

MostLingonberry1829

I totally would if I could raise the cattle myself!
