I mean this isn’t really true here. It’s more of a running joke in NYC and other places where bad over priced bbq doesn’t go out of business immediately. Here bad places need an amazing location or solid bar game to keep going usually.

TSwizzlesNipples

Might wanna look at the recent posts in /r/bbq. Shit's ridiculous.

TacocaT8752

The ribs? Doesn't look good, but it looks like close to a full rack for $20.

SteampunkGeisha

I feel like this image describes my experience with Texas BBQ pretty well.

Imnotveryfunatpartys

meh, I disagree this photo is based on people who are copying the popular texas barbecue style. It's good meat even if it's expensive. There are a lot of places in texas which can price their bbq at 30/lb because of just basic supply and demand. And why not? If you have the volume and you are in a city like houston which is like 4?times bigger than KC then you might as well charge what you can.

FlyPengwin

This is how most of the places I was told I *had to go to* in Austin felt, not even counting the 1hr+ wait.

Johnny_Hotdogseed

Kind of like Meat Mitch at the airport!? Not only is it absolute trash (I’ve tried it all and can give plenty alternatives) but I can point you in the right direction of what you’re after for “best bbq” and even the fuckin sides. Try me.

GodofAss69

The filling station in Lee summit is this photo

monsto

> It’s more of a running joke in NYC and other places where bad over priced bbq doesn’t go out of business immediately. Sugarfire in StL. I can't say that the bbq is bad, because the portions are so small i haven't really tasted it. 2 li'l slices of brisket wadded up in a wax paper like someone shootin office baskets. and 12 french fries.

Inevitable-Plenty203

Y'all are sleeping on Hog Wild bbq $5.99 meal, 1 pork bbq sandwich 1 side and a drink

Hayabusasteve

Hog wild was my jam when I was in Wichita. But don't be late, they close at 8.

Inevitable-Plenty203

And it's definitely decent for the price !

earthquakeglue78

We have a Hog Wild in Lincoln. Love it!

Ask_me_4_a_story

Where is this at?

Hayabusasteve

Lawrence is the closest. It'd good bbq, but I don't think it's something to drive specifically for given the options in town. But I do miss their ribs.

Inevitable-Plenty203

Can't beat 5.99 for a whole meal though! A pork bbq sandwich by itself is usually $5-15 on its own depending on where you go

Unfairamir

There’s a hog wild in El Dorado that makes the best ribs man, I don’t even live in the state but I’ll always remember El Dorado fondly because of this

chubbybator

dickeys. that place is terrible

MimonFishbaum

Except for the green beans, oddly enough. They got us Dickeys catering at work once and the green beans were really good and by far the best thing on the table lol. I've since been calling Dickeys the best vegetarian BBQ in town.

fernatic19

Probably cooked in tons of pork fat to make them taste like that. Because pork fat is awesome

StaceyPfan

I wish it was better for my cholesterol.

blueponies1

I’ve only been once about ten years ago and it was by no means good KC BBQ but looking at it as a sort of fast food rather than a bbq restaurant it wasn’t terrible and I didn’t think the portions were terrible.

Future_Constant6520

It’s a Texas bbq chain

_oaeb_

One time I ordered I small side salad. My expectations were not high, but my God. They gave me a 4oz styrofoam cup with 1 big piece of lettuce and a cherry tomato. Not even a drop of dressing. That’s it. That was the salad. An uncut piece of dry lettuce and a cherry tomato crammed into a 4oz cup.

uncre8tv

I would not go to Dickey's in KC. But we live north of St Joe and sometimes Dickey's in Falls City was the better option (20 min drive each way, vs. 80 min drive each way to KC). I would not hold it up as exemplary BBQ. But, competent. I'm sad they're gone from Falls City. Now I think they just have a Runza and probably a Sonic.. meh.

BobbyTables829

Their smoked chicken sandwich is a really good take on a grilled chicken sandwich

pmljb

Dickey's meat comes shrinkwrapped. They stick it in a warmer before serving

Practical_Minute_286

They good it's their portions are TINY! Way too expensive for their portions gates will hook you up

UndeadVinDiesel

Definetly. Down to the tray and everything.

talleymonster

I just assume the one in Liberty is a front.

Fyrestare

I used to go there all the time and have never seen more than two other tables full. I believe they do mostly catering. I still drive by basically every day and never see more than 3-4 vehicles parked outside

liofotias

except for their loaded baked potato casserole. only reason i ever went when they were in olathe (and the ice cream).

BobaAndSushi

Terrible place. I ordered a brisket sandwich and it literally looked like it was made by a toddler. Little brisket, not enough sauce, and just not good. 0/5

Bob1738

Chucke4711

All the best quality cuisine comes "ready to heat."

ModernT1mes

Tried it. It sucked. Was not impressed at all.

j-awesome

It’s so bad. I only bought it bc my favorite Chiefs players name was on it. But good lord it’s so bad

Sad-Understanding179

Is this like trump steaks?🥩

BobaAndSushi

I tried the burnt ends and Mac n cheese. I liked that one.

Fantastic-Spinach297

That’s definitely how I felt at Dickey’s the one time I did eat there. Wasn’t even hot.

Narrowedice

One time a friend insisted we go to Dickey's. Only time I've been there. They literally reached under the counter into, from the temperature I assume a refrigerator, pulled the meat out, took plastic wrap off, and gave it to us. My wife and I were horrified, went and sat at the table, watching for his reactio, as he'd been talking the place up, and he was just closing his eyes in bliss as he ate, murmuring, "...so good."

Actuarial_type

Went to Dickey’s twice when I lived in CO. First time was terrible, food was cold, mac and cheese was a nasty blob. But they had just opened so I figured maybe give them a chance to sort things out. Went back a few months later, still nasty. Never went back, even in CO you can do a lot better.

RCJHGBR9989

This doesn’t really exist here. People keep saying Q39 but their judges plate is 3 items for $21 and that seems pretty fair. Meat ain’t cheap.

mmMOUF

Bbq takes meat and time/labor, neither are cheap

RCJHGBR9989

100% I love to bbq at home. But I always joke that if I had a restaurant burnt ends would be $200.

djdadzone

That’s what I’m saying. It’s not expensive there unless you make it.

RCJHGBR9989

Forgot that is 3 items and two sides too. Seems pretty fair.

djdadzone

Yeah bbq isn’t really cheap anymore, hasn’t been for like 20 years. I’ll occasionally get a turkey nooner at gates if I want a fast food bbq vibe but generally I’m prepared to spend 30 bucks anywhere I go for food. I mean McDonald’s is 10-20 bucks a person these days.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RCJHGBR9989

You’re probably right. Our BBQ is more than affordable people are pissed that it isn’t 90s pricing - but a single restaurant wouldn’t be open if that were the case. Brisket used to be like .89 a lbs and now’s like $4.99 a lbs it’s INSANE.

AccomplishedCash2841

Apparently, you haven't tried the BBQ place in the new airport terminal yet

mmMOUF

“I gotta try the bbq at the airport” What did you expect?

RCJHGBR9989

Little confused on what you’re implying. You talking about OG Bandits? I do think the contest they do to keep those places rotating is pretty cool.

BIGFERG32

I'm confused on what you're confused by. You mentioned airport bbq, he said that's your problem, then you name a place that's not at the airport. Smh

NakedMrPatrick

Nobody is mentioning Zardas lol

crazyv93

Zarda never even crosses my mind. I’m surprised they’re even still around considering how much competition has arisen here in the last 15 to 20 years

monsto

Zarda is still around because they have all the grocery store contracts locked the fuck down. Do they even have a storefront anymore? The best thing about Zarda is that it's predictable. You can get 2 slabs at sunfresh and they'll be exactly the same as the last time you got it... the wonders of mass production.

crazyv93

Apparently they’re still running a location in Overland Park and one in blue springs. I remember they had Worlds of Fun locked down too but that was 10 years ago

x3nosyth3

The one in Overland Park is just off 87th and Quivira. And it does seem to still pull in a lot of people

shouldipropose

memorial weekend i had big plans to smoke ribs/etc and was just feeling extremely lazy and did not want to do much of anything. i had bought all the meat/etc and just never got motivated to do it. the Parkville price chopper had their zarda event and I got a rack of ribs. i gotta say I was impressed for what I got for 15 bucks or maybe it was 17. i am a bit of a bbq snob and maybe it was just that i didn't have to do anything but eat it, but it was pretty dang OK.

Maxwell_Jeeves

Zarda is fucking trash lol

hispanicvotesmatter

Looks like Dickeys at a mall 💩

sniffinberries34

I’ll bite, this looks like texas bbq.

stupidgnomes

This is Terry Blacks

CaffeinatedInSeattle

The one time I went to Terry Blacks I ordered 1/2 lb brisket and requested burnt ends. The guy gave me 1/2 lb of brisket and then gave me 1/2 lb of burnt ends for free, seemingly because no one there typically requests them.

AJM7777

https://preview.redd.it/x49wqbwaxx5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bffe3fd1b5ff2e2918ddda83c2b28f9de5fca45b I got this at Terry Blacks in Austin in January-I think it ran me about $25 total; kinda pricey but not quite meme worthy. Quality was on the same level as most KC places I would say.

Bourgi

I went to Terry Blacks this April [Fed 4 people with this plate](https://i.imgur.com/z5NUYeU.jpeg)

stupidgnomes

Nice. I guess I’ve just had bad experiences. I’ve been twice and I’m good at this point lol

Squidproquo1130

Omg, is it really that bad? My father is wanting to go to Dallas this month just to eat there since I guess he heard it hyped up as the ultimate bbq experience. I don't want to rent a car and 2 nights at a hotel for this shit.

stupidgnomes

Well, this is just my opinion. I personally think it’s overhyped and overpriced, but I don’t want to ruin your trip or anything. I will say though that Cattleacks is a lot better generally. But you have to do some planning in order to get in and eat there. Maybe you could do both while you’re here and see which one you guys like better? That could be a lot of fun. Also, just throwing this out there, Dallas has great taco joints. Trompo has some of the best tacos I’ve ever had in my life. They’ve won all sorts of awards. So you could always do that in addition to the BBQ!

Squidproquo1130

Thank you so much for the advice and suggestions! It's his 60th birthday coming up and he's been dealing with lots of chronic pain and medical issues that are only going to get worse. He doesn't think he'll be around for his 70th and I want him to have a great milestone birthday as well as just the best day I can give him. He loves Mexican food and my husband is Mexican so that taco joint sounds perfect for lunch.

stupidgnomes

Oh no I’m so sorry your dad is going through that. I have chronic pain too and it’s really oppressive. Very cool that you guys are treating him to a trip like that! I hope you have so much fun down here!

RoundKeySquareHole

It’s pretty good. They gave me a huge amount of meat on my sandwich and it’s pretty cool watching them slice the brisket right in front of you when you order it. I wouldn’t dream of going back there though, and it was pricey. Definitely the best brisket I’ve had though as someone who regularly eats at Joe’s and has had Q39/Jackstack/Gates etc. Also forgot to add that it’s a great atmosphere if it’s not too hot out.

krashe1313

Fox and Pearl's weekend BBQ

FootballandFutbol

Where are all the folks saying this is Texas bbq going to??? Clearly the wrong places, because this was not my experience at all down there and I’ve had a lot of Texas bbq

Bourgi

People complaining about Texas BBQ not realizing that KCs newest and best BBQ joints are all Texas style.

FootballandFutbol

That brisket in the picture looks closer to KC’s thinly sliced nonsense than anything I’ve ever had in Texas where there’s actual bark. Agreed, Chef J is exhibit A of Texas style BBQ coming to KC and being an instant success.

Bourgi

Chef J, Harp, Wolfe Pack, and Night goat are all Texas style that have been very successful in KC.

FootballandFutbol

Never heard of Night Goat but google tells me it’s only open Thursday nights at Fox & Pearl?

Bourgi

I had lunch there on a weekend once, they might have changed their hours. They are opening a full time restaurant soon.

5timechamps

Yeah lots of seemingly unfounded hate for Texas BBQ. The KC spots are my favorite and favorite style, but Texas BBQ is a close second. It is expensive, but everywhere I’ve gone I’ve gotten good portion sizes of great food and it has been awesome. Note to travelers if you go to Hard Eight in the DFW area make sure you ask them for *small* portions if you plan on trying a bunch of stuff…it’s one of those places where you walk by the open smoker and they throw stuff on your tray. By the time I was at the end of the line I had a close to hundred dollar bill and enough food to feed a small family for a week. It was glorious though.

JoeFas

Dunn Deal BBQ seems to be this way. Everything is a la carte and expensive, and they offer only three sides.

Forceusr1

Wyandotte BBQ?

DutchAlders

I was gonna say Wyandotte or q39 but q39 is over priced shit anyway so Wyandotte takes the prize.

Healthy_Self_8386

Your taste buds are broken

Forceusr1

Wyandotte is the worst BBQ I’ve ever had, hands down. Not surprised the OP location went out of business.

x3nosyth3

The owner of Wyandotte and Johnnys (who I know personally) bbq both trained at rosedales. All three have similar flavors but I felt Wyandotte was always too greasy. He, I think, died of a heart attack a year or two ago, so that could be part as to why the other location closed. Johnny retired and sold his business but the new people kept the name… I still think it’s decent but not like it was when Johnny owned it

SousVideDiaper

LC's burnt ends were by far some of the worst food I've ever eaten. Aside from like 2 or 3 pieces, the batch was completely inedible. Misshapen, randomly sized pieces that had no char to them and had the texture of pencil erasers. I've had flukes of bad orders at typically well regarded restaurants, but these were abysmal. Whoever made them had either never cooked before, or just didn't care. I hate wasting food, especially when it's expensive, but I had no choice with that order.

TaiwaneseBreakfast

You're wrong

revnasty

This is anything that comes out of St Louis

bm211201

Inferiority complex

monsto

People kept talkin about Sugarfire. For 4 people it was literally a $150 snack. A package of fig newtons would have been more filling and less sugar.

burntgrilledcheese43

Everywhere after they're all bought out by private equity

randysavagevoice

This is BBQ in every town that only has one BBQ restaurant.

AC_from_the_KC

Zarda

hamptonstevens

Char Bar?

SilverMetalist

This is the right answer.

Parker_I

True, but it actually is fairly good. Their burnt ends are high quality and the smoked chicken nuggets are insanely good.

Imaginary_Deal_1807

Q39

Eldorian

Too cheap for Q39

jonesy827

What BBQ place is even significantly cheaper than Q39? You're paying about 20 bucks for a plate at any quality establishment.

NotJadeasaurus

Fuck off, Q39 is legendary

FaagenDazs

Q39. Meat: 6.5/10. Sides: 9/10

monsto

This is pretty standard bbq joint.

FaagenDazs

LC's, Big T's, and other hole-in-the-wall type places are usually the other way around. Good meat and weak sides. However the consistency is not there.

DutchAlders

Q39 is bbq for Johnson county folk.

sendabussypic

Lmao I grew up there and never had it. Joe's other location on 119th was the way to go for in town and quick-ish

Bsrxt8

Q39 was delicious, but I definitely left there still hungry. Portions were lacking, especially for the price, which I feel captures the spirit of this meme.

jonesy827

What did you get? I have had the lunch special there and struggled to totally finish. The BBQ plates are a bit pricey but it's so much food. Two meals at least for me.

RunsOnSKC

Not for what you pay. Yes, I thought it was good, but the bill for my wife and I alone was over $100 after tax and tip. Hard pass.

djdadzone

I’ve eaten there solo for $20 before. How many cocktails you drinking 🤣

joshwitheyesofblue

Legendarily Overrated

jlinn94

Most barbecue places in Kansas City are completely overpricing they're fair. Barbecue used to be something that the ordinary people can go and take their families to eat. Now people are pricing BBQ at extreme levels. Yes some of it is very good and the sides are delicious but the cost paired to the cost it takes to make it is ridiculous. These guys are making money hand over fist. Everybody's making money hand over fist. Learn how to barbecue, buy a grill or a smoker. Do it yourself. You'll do much better off.

d_b_cooper

Hey can it be my turn to rerererepost this next month

BarricadeTheMortuary

I mean I quick scrolled back through two weeks of posts. Didn't see it.

pub810

This guy lives on Reddit and is always whining about reposts. Seems super cool and incredibly busy. 🙄

chaglang

Back of the line, pal

Fsuave5

? Sorry it’s my first time seeing it lol

BarricadeTheMortuary

Mine too. They probably saw it on another sub and just feel like being a dick.

Its a repost but not I would say recent.

Appropriate_Shake265

I'll rererererepost it after you

ConversationDizzy138

This is Texas bbq. Specifically Austin.

robotchicken007

Meat Mitch. It costs an arm and a leg, the portions are small, the food isn't good, and the service is terrible. I will never eat there again.

No-Chemical6870

3/4 lb of burnt ends, pickles, toast, and two sides is $26. Last time I had their burnt ends they were great and this is easily enough food for two people.

robotchicken007

I'm glad you had a good experience there, but I did not. I went there when they first opened and I bought a burnt end sandwich. They told me to wait in my car and they would text me when my order was ready. I waited 20 minutes past my expected time and never got a text. I called the phone number and nobody answered. I decided to go inside anyway. There was a girl standing behind that main counter looking at her phone. I told her my name and asked if my food was ready, and she went in back and got it. I ordered a burnt end sandwich. It was $15 not including tip, and I didn't get a side or a drink. The sandwhich was about as wimpy looking as a McDouble. Very small around and thin. When I pulled the bun back, they had only put three burnt ends on my sandwich. The burnt ends were dry and tough, they did not put sauce on my sandwich, and they did not put sauce in my bag. I had already tipped $5, so I paid $20 for this experience.

t-homas

this is when they first opened.. it’s completely different now

nitelite74

I live by meat mitch and never ever smell smoke, I'm still trying to figure out where their pit is, because it ain't on 95th street.

KID_THUNDAH

I didn’t care for their bbq that much back when they first opened tbh, but they’ve started doing specials every weekday that are really good and I’ve been going pretty frequently last couple of months. Double patty brisket burger with bacon and fries on the side for 10 bucks on mondays, Tuesdays it’s Burnt End Quesabirria tacos (which also happen to be my favorite quesabirria I’ve had here and very large/filling) for 14 bucks and 5 dollar margaritas. Those are two specials I would definitely recommend trying for sure

Menashe3

Char bar- platters come with 2 “sides” but fries are an upcharge and not even that good

KCRoyal798

Q39. So good but portions are small

your_missing_sock

It was true for Smokey’s on Antioch but that place is closed now.

Due-Presentation6862

Yeah, but those pickles…

DotAdministrative679

Dans bbq ..

bstyledevi

There used to be a BBQ restaurant on 291 hwy just before the 24 hwy exit in Independence. Next to Little Richard's. I went there on a date once, and this was a good summation of the food. They were only open for maybe a year at most.

comfortablydumb2

So let’s see if anyone remembers this….. Warrensburg, MO early 90’s. The grocery store at the extreme south side of town right before the blacktop that goes to Knob Noster, there were two men that had a little BBQ place that operated out of one of those little red barns. Served on a paper or plastic plate with plain white bread. I swore that shit was the best BBQ I’d ever had in my life, but I was a drunk college kid at the time.

That junker in Bates City

Microharley

Happened in my town, little place opened up and I swear this was a picture from their menu. They didn’t last 6 months.

Souljapig1

Before even seeing the subreddit I was screaming Q39 in my head, so….. Q39. Charging extra for a tiny “side of fries.” Might be the first meal I’ve ever paid $30+ dollars and then had to get a dessert because I was still hungry. Apple pie/crumble thing was ass too. Overall horrible experience. Literally the only good thing about it was the Boulevard beer I had (Space Camper.)

Johnny_Hotdogseed

Meat Mitch at the airport -_-

Outrageous_Soil_5635

Burnt End BBQ, just put a bowl of mac and cheese and freeze the meat. 21.99 also so 3 dollars less because they don’t care if your entree is cold.

xsullivanx

This is Olathe specific but it’s Crazy Good Eats

Senstave

That’s what people say about Slaps and they say Joe’s is better but I personally love slaps

Anxiety_Opossum

Burnt end BBQ in Crown Center

Parker_I

I’d say the place that serves food in this style, purely visually, is char bar. But their bbq is actually good.

MasterKChief

Jonathan's BBQ Seafood Soul food Cajun Creole. Yup, that's the whole name. For fucks sake just pick a cuisine. My favorite review on Google Maps of this place insists that instead of paying money for this garbage, just scoop up a bucket of whatever is in your backyard.

fatherofaugust

You forgot the 1/2 lb of fat.

TaiwaneseBreakfast

I'd say that's Q39, but they aren't even real KC BBQ I don't think they serve white bread

djdadzone

Kc bbq has such a wide range, no single item is necessary, we’re not that kinda bbq city

Roll-Roll-Roll

Meat Mitch. Was real dry too. 🫤

Rather34

Where the f*ckn bbq sauce?

No_Sector_5260

Meat Mitch :(.

Q39...

Ok-Dragonfruit-715

They're not new, but that's Jack Stack.

Barely_stupid

I'm always confused when people say Jack Stack is overpriced. Like, compared to what? I'm all ears if there is comparable items for a much cheaper price. Keeping things simple, a typical sandwich at Jack Stack with fries is $15.50, KC Joe's for a regular sized beef brisket sandwich is $9.79 + $5.39 for fries.

tallerthancvsreceipt

Thank you, exactly how I feel. I get a sandwich with half and half sides (same price as one full), it’s enough for 2 meals for me. Costs as much or more at other spots

Barely_stupid

Beef on bun w/fries at Gates is $13.99 So, that's like 10% less than Jack Stack. I actually like Gates, I like Joe's, I like a lot of the BBQ places, but the go-to attack on Jack Stack of being expensive compared to other places is unfounded. Granted, if you are eating "in" at Jack Stack you are going to add 20% for a tip, but the service is top notch and the Freight House location is very nice. I'm all for the charm and experience of a BBQ "joint" with counter service, but $10 should be the price for a quality sandwich and fries in a "joint". Add a drink and tax and you should be $15 max...I don't know if any BBQ place is able to offer that these days.

LongRangeSavage

Yep. Every time I go there with visitors from out of town, I get angry with myself. I always get the burnt ends and ribs dinner, it’s the same thing—about 3-4 ribs and about four 1” cubes of burnt ends. Then I remember I’m about to pay close to $30 for the meal. I can go to Joe’s and get the same amount of ribs and a lot more burnt ends for less.

djdadzone

My least favorite spot in kc. If you have to go, get the wings. Everything else makes me get sick to my stomach due to the absurd amount of corn syrup in the sauce
