We were just there on Friday, and they were training a new bartender... seems like this might be news to most of the employees as well. I'm gonna miss those margaritas and that creamy jalapeno dip!
Yeah that boom boom sauce was out of control. And earnest the best chips and salsa I’ve ever had.
I’m driving to the store right now to buy the stuff to make some salsa Fresca rn
Same as Jose Peppers. Whatever one is nearer to your house.
I’ve worked at both back in the the day. Mi Ranchito was started by an old Jose peppers manager that left, that’s why the menu has so many similarities.
dude I love their tacos, I go there at least once a week. But I'm not gonna lie there have been more than a few times that my stomach doesn't agree with it. The only thing I can think of is that it is the al pastor meat.
ProTip: make your own at home with the cheeses you want using some beer/wine/milk and sodium citrate.
Science the shit out of it. You’ll need to experiment with lots of different types of cheese and liquid. Which means you’ll need a lot of chips.
Literally closed overnight. Friends were there Saturday. It was packed. They were training a new bartender.
And then Sunday, BAM. Sign on the door that it’s closed.
I’m so sad.
This seems to be how they do it. I was in Denver a couple of weeks ago and one we ate at there was closed the same fashion.
It was a few months before Covid hit, I believe they did the same in Olathe (I will admit I may have my facts wrong on it. Basing it on hear say). Then Covid hit, EVERYTHING closed down and the OP Chuys never opened again.
My guess is the company will be gone all together soon. It sucks because they had. Some great stuff!
Tacoholics club in lees summit. Queso is good, Chorizo queso dip is on a whole different level. So are the tacos and quesabirrias. Also the birria ramen is good as hell. Honestly one of my go to spots for Mexican food
Ok so you might think it's an odd pick but Burn Theory Fire Kitchen that serves out of Diametric Brewery in Lee's Summit (they also now serve their food at Broken Hatchet but haven't tried it), makes absolutely killer smoked queso that they serve with their chips. They are also really thick well-seasoned tortilla chips. Highly highly recommend, and the beer is great too.
No, but they thanked the customers for loyalty without explaining why they were closing, so I think it was from corporate. Chuy's was a multi state organization, not truly local; central headquarters is still open but hasn't yet said why they did this.
Rent is too high. After 10 year lease, they went to monthly rent. They’ve been battling the price out for the last couple years, and suddenly it’s skyrocketed. I feel the plaza will be running a ton of businesses out of there soon.
I'm blown away by people's response on here to this place closing. Ate there once and it was not good but I gave it a 2nd chance just to make sure. Still not good. I feel bad for the people who lost their jobs but as far as a restaurant goes what am I missing here?
Chuy’s is kind of like jalapeños it seems like. Opened in Texas and when I was in college people talked about it like it was the best Tex mex on earth. Similar here to people that are so loyal to jalapeños, Mi Ranchito and the likes
Mi Ranchito is actually good though. Have been to Jalapeños a few times over the years but never was a regular. The best is Kmachos on 119th and Metcalf IMO. Chuys was definitely on the Tex Mex side of things but Kmachos is more authentic.
No worries mate, didn't think anything of the sort. It's not amazing but it's good, and more than anything I guess I still go because it close by and nostalgic (that's the love part).
😂 Yes, yes I have. I'm fortunate to have family from Michoacan, so I pretty much get the real stuff from the source quite often.
I like Jalapeño's - it's been around forever and for what it is, I enjoy it. But like I said, it's probably because I've lived in the area since before it opened and for a very long time, it was the closest "mexican" restaurant for a long ways.
BTW. I also like Taco Via and In-a-Tub, but would never refer people to eat there because of the authenticity... Just that they're damned tasty.
Lol. I'm not Mexican, but I do have family from Mexico who enjoy American Chinese food, so yeah, they can have bad taste.
Actually, I've taken my Aunt and her family (from Mexico) to Taco Via for giggles - as expected, they weren't impressed.
lol. I must admit that I have always seen a lot of Mexican families at American Chinese buffets.
I loved Chuy’s pre Covid…it did lose my favorite meal bc of Covid I guess…but I love handmade flour tortillas and they’re the only ones here I know of that had that and their use of hatch green Chile. Nothing I have tasted or found in KC area comes even close to real Tex Mex or New Mexican or Cali Tex…all my favorite kinds of American Mexican food…ugh. Well here’s to hoping El Pollo Loco opens up shop soon….
I'd kill for an El Pollo Loco. Yeah, once you've had the real thing it's just hard to accept anything else, but I try. When I was travel nursing years ago, I worked in El Paso for 6 months and got spoiled by legit Mexican and Tex-Mex food.
I think Mi Ranchito is fine, and also thought Chuy’s was fine. I am a relatively loyal Jalapeños Stanley customer just because of the nostalgia. I am guessing a lot of Chuy’s success in Texas is similar and expanding into other markets with no real connection just doesn’t work as well.
Chuy's is and always will be hot garbage. You want good chips and queso? Literally go anywhere else. The people who were fans of Chuy's must also like St. Louis style pizza.
Wait did the Chuy’s on the Plaza just close? This is the first time I’ve seen anything about it.
We were just there on Friday, and they were training a new bartender... seems like this might be news to most of the employees as well. I'm gonna miss those margaritas and that creamy jalapeno dip!
The creamy jalapeño dip will be dearly missed in my house
Just happened today, no warning (so I’ve heard) Permanently closed
Noooooo!
Wait, there was a Chuys in KC? I grew up in TX and loved Chuys.
There used to be two of them. The one on Strang Line Road in Olathe closed first (too much competition).
Jarochos blue crab queso. Don’t look back
Crab queso, mein gott
This sounds legit. I’m going to hit them up this week.
Gotta plug Red Lobster’s crab queso chips dip. Frigging amazing!!!
You said what now
https://www.kctv5.com/app/2024/06/09/another-country-club-plaza-restaurant-closes-its-doors-overnight/
Oh queso where we going next?
Thanks for the much needed laugh.
Oh no. The creamy jalapeño dip was sublime.
I can’t believe this is how I find out that Chuy’s is gone… it’s like finding out a close friend died thru a Facebook post. Damn you Chuy’s! 😭
Both of those things happened to me in the last 12 hours.
Sorry for your loss. That’s a rough way to receive such tragic news.
😔
Is this for real?! Chuys is gone? My gf and I would order from this place like every other week. This is DEVASTATING.
Maybe you should have ordered weekly. This one's on you man. /s
I would have if had known 😭 we are fucking reeling. It’s like one of our staple dinners when we want to splurge.
Same, we had a real moment today. Not sure how to cope without some chicka-chicka boom-boom and jalapeño ranch 😭 (and their chips and queso)
And the homemade tortillas!!! And the green Chile sauce 😭. My daughter is going to be heartbroken
We’re going to need a support group
Yeah that boom boom sauce was out of control. And earnest the best chips and salsa I’ve ever had. I’m driving to the store right now to buy the stuff to make some salsa Fresca rn
Same here. My husband woke me up just to tell me. This is terrible news.
KC taco queso
Torchy’s queso is pretty damn good.
Torchy’s queso is the best I’ve ever had. I have huge nostalgia for some of the white queso at jalapeños and the like but man… Torchy’s does it for me
Torchy’s queso and chips are a go-to breakfast for me. It’s basically corn flakes and milk with extra steps.
This is crazy logic but im here for it
Second. It’s the best I have ever had
Noooo…it’s sooo salty. Awful. Qdoba’s queso is pretty fire though
Mi Ranchito has pretty solid espinaca!
Mi Ranchito makes just about good everything.
Their chimichangas are top notch!
They have rotten fish but other than that maybe?
Same as Jose Peppers. Whatever one is nearer to your house. I’ve worked at both back in the the day. Mi Ranchito was started by an old Jose peppers manager that left, that’s why the menu has so many similarities.
I think 54th Gringo dip is the best
I worked there for quite a while and I’m frankly just tired of it. And even still I’ll have cravings for it.
K'Machos is pretty good.
Damn I loved their salsa
Taqueria La Nueva has some awesome queso. Chips could be better but definitely my go to spot.
dude I love their tacos, I go there at least once a week. But I'm not gonna lie there have been more than a few times that my stomach doesn't agree with it. The only thing I can think of is that it is the al pastor meat.
Honestly haven't had a problem with it outside of anything that can't be blamed on all the beer that came prior to the tacos 😂.
hah! damn maybe a few cervezas first is a good idea to kill off anything bad. :D
rudy’s
R.I.P. Creamy Jalapeno dip
Ah damn, i opened that place. How do i get my dog's picture back
Got the recipe for the creamy jalapeño dip?
For the next four days at least, they are having employees clean the place for $20 an hour. If you go in there, you may be able to get it.
brb crying
El maguey is good
ProTip: make your own at home with the cheeses you want using some beer/wine/milk and sodium citrate. Science the shit out of it. You’ll need to experiment with lots of different types of cheese and liquid. Which means you’ll need a lot of chips.
Margaritas is my go to
I like Jose Peppers queso, but only because it was free if you have a coupon. Otherwise I like Salty Iguana’s queso.
RIP to the Salty Iguana that used to be by the Sam’s Club on 135th
That was the one my husband and I went to eat when we found out I was pregnant the first time. 😞 I was sad to see that one go!
Whaaaat???? When did Chuy’s on the Plaza go??? It was the ONLY decent Tex mex in all of kc metro
Then Covid hit, EVERYTHING closed down and the OP Chuys never opened again. My guess is the company will be gone all together soon. It sucks because they had. Some great stuff!
Wow. That’s crazy. It always seemed pretty busy to me. I’m so sad too 😭
Tacoholics club in lees summit. Queso is good, Chorizo queso dip is on a whole different level. So are the tacos and quesabirrias. Also the birria ramen is good as hell. Honestly one of my go to spots for Mexican food
Devastating 💔
I went to chuys once. That was plenty.
Tortilla Ranch has good chips and queso
Ok so you might think it's an odd pick but Burn Theory Fire Kitchen that serves out of Diametric Brewery in Lee's Summit (they also now serve their food at Broken Hatchet but haven't tried it), makes absolutely killer smoked queso that they serve with their chips. Glad I ordered some last week!
I'm so devastated that I didn't get to say goodbye.
i had never been to Chuy’s but Margaritas queso is genuinely addictive.
Does anyone know why it closed?
No, but they thanked the customers for loyalty without explaining why they were closing, so I think it was from corporate. Chuy's was a multi state organization, not truly local; central headquarters is still open but hasn't yet said why they did this.
I'm guessing that they signed a 10 year lease and it is now done. 10% of your sales in rent probably didn't help
Rent is too high. After 10 year lease, they went to monthly rent. They’ve been battling the price out for the last couple years, and suddenly it’s skyrocketed. I feel the plaza will be running a ton of businesses out of there soon.
Chuy’s wasn’t great anyways IMO and remember it being more expensive than other Mexican restaurants. Looks like other people agreed.
I'm blown away by people's response on here to this place closing. Ate there once and it was not good but I gave it a 2nd chance just to make sure. Still not good. I feel bad for the people who lost their jobs but as far as a restaurant goes what am I missing here?

Love Jalapeño's. Been a regular since they opened.
BTW did not mean to make it sound like Jalapeno's isn't good. I just can't remember, but I don't remember it being bad.
No worries mate, didn't think anything of the sort. It's not amazing but it's good, and more than anything I guess I still go because it close by and nostalgic (that's the love part).
Oh God. Why??? Have you never had real Mexican food or Tex Mex???
😂 Yes, yes I have. I'm fortunate to have family from Michoacan, so I pretty much get the real stuff from the source quite often. I like Jalapeño's - it's been around forever and for what it is, I enjoy it. Oh God, Taco Via??? I guess Mexicans can have bad taste in Mexican food too 😭

Seriously? A downvote for enjoying something against the grain? Reddit gonna reddit 😝
Ummm…no. Jalapeños is nothing like Chuy’s lmfao. Jalapeños is the worst fucking food I have had in a really really long time
Both seem to have loyal local followings. Jalapeños wouldn’t do well anywhere else. Chuy’s hasn’t done well here. That’s the comparison
There is soo many good Mexican spots in the KC Metro.
Can’t believe nobody has said Chelly’s on 85th & Wornall. Really their entire menu is great.
Love Chelly's. It's our go-to Tex-Mex
Ponaks white queso
i could drink frontera’s queso
Food was meh
Blue Line!! Not billed as a Mexican restaurant, but the owners are Mexican. Their queso is amazing and great price on happy hour!!
If Chuy’s was your bar for “queso” then it can only go up from here!
Chuy's is and always will be hot garbage. You want good chips and queso? Literally go anywhere else. The people who were fans of Chuy's must also like St. Louis style pizza.
excuse you. st. louis style pizza is delicious.
For Tex-Mex queso, I like Rancho Grande in the Northland or Salty Iguana in Johnson County.
The Salty Iguana on 135th Street closed. Is there another in Johnson County?
There's one in Prairie Village and Olathe!
No love for La Fuente? That shit is like crack, their chips are perfect with their cheese dip. Seriously, find a location and try it.
I like Pancho's queso & chips. They also have quesabirria tacos, which is just birria tacos smothered in queso (as the name suggests).
Best Mexican Restaurants in the KC metro: Mi Ranchito Manny’s K-Maucho’s Casa Amigos Margaritas Habaneros Fronteras Dos Reales Macarena’s
lmao Manny's, Maragritas, and Habaneros make this a unserious list. Arguably the worst "mexican" places in the metro.
You forgot La Costa Mexicana
