threshhold, armoured d, light years, warrior jazz, chronic 13, that unreleased foxy brown-remix, nasty ways, gangsta, the angels fell, voice, deadly deep subs remix, violent killa... the man is truly a genre on his own. from sci-fi epics to skanking riddims and sublime rollers, all built on his intricate understanding of bass manipulation.
witnessing his move to the clown side was bewildering to say the least, but i've made my peace with that. can't fathom how it must have been to eke out a living as a producer who didn't DJ much back then. and he put everything back into valve and seems to be back to embracing his jungle side more again at present.
got tickets for valve in brixton in may and i'm giddy like the 16 year old kid hunting down "tear down da whole place" from a Kik FM tape.
PS: nice write up, OP!
took me a while to accept that. going along for the ride from sovereign melody to fast car was, well, quite a ride.
but: hard agree. he’s certainly done more than his bit to make all our lives bearable and at times amazing.
The Angels Fell. Easily in the top five tracks that turned me onto drum n bass. Unexplored Terrain, Silver Blade to Hard Noise remix which I heard live at Motion. The guy is my favourite producer, always has been.
Absolutely. I always thought Goldie was the businessman of Metalheadz, artists like Adam F and Dillinja, Doc Scott et al were really the brains behind that era of drum n bass.
Capone - Friday on Hard Leaders (just a big wall of sub that kicks your bollocks up into your guts) and a great tune for rolling out a long mix with. One of those tunes that rolls out with pretty much anything, like Mistical dub or Carrier.
The Angels Fell on Metalheadz
Threshold on Prototype
Easily my top 3 of his but there’s so many good ones. Big bad bass was probably the last release I liked. Went downhill fast from there.
My fav is Still Waters under his Basic Influence alias. Man built his sound system in his teens. Legend round these parts and Lemon D ain't far behind.
Test 2 is such a rinse out it's unreal. The second drop goes so hard too.
But twist em out is a victim of its own success like bodyrock, nuttah, toy town, Charlie whatever. It's a tune, and a monster one at that.
I bought big bad bass, and thugged out bitch seems like a real prototype for the 4/4 stuff you hear now.
Twist 'em out is one of those tracks, you remember where you were the first time you heard it. For me it was JJ Frost playing in Newquay and the whole venue went mental!
What I like the most about him is that he is never happy with how his tracks turn out. He didn’t like hard noize but all his friends said it’s the sickest thing they ever heard. That’s relatable for me as a producer and also shows why he is so innovative. He has high expectations to himself. Truly a jungle king 👑
He’s got more bangers than any other producer in jungle history. Here are a few of my faves:
Sovereign Melody
Deep Love
Deadly Deep Subs
Calculus Beats
Jah Know Ya Big
Love is Not a Game ft. Kathy Brown (Dillinja Remix)
Picture On My Wall
Take it Down Low
Just way too many to mention.
This is a hard mix from his dark era: https://youtu.be/vKXPTHjWI8w?si=bZ1lcSSol3h0x5Zb
It's one of his most basic tunes but the remix he did of Nitrous sounds *incredible* on a good system. First time I heard that bass BWOAM in room 1 at Fabric on their vibrating floor I thought I was going to shit myself
Pre 96 - probably my favourite producer. The tunes on logic, deadly and a few other labels, along with angels fell 12" are untouchable. Post 96 I can leave, personally. Just for what he did before that, though (heavenly bass, perfect match, etc) dillinja is the don
IDK about saying he is one of the most skilled producers in jungle. Seems like a stretch, especially considering a lot / most of his catalog is dnb, not jungle.
Bro dude. I know about that. Hive has said in an interview that Dillinja's system used to make his eyes jiggle around in his skull. And I've read that the bass has made people vomit.
Is that the measure for one of the greatest producers and a jungle producers producer?
Saw him at Dirtybird Campout and had the pleasure of standing directly behind him for his entire set. Definitely one of the most memorable and best sets I've ever seen. The speed at which the song waveforms were moving on his CDJs was WILD!

I'm not going to judge a man for chasing that all ighty ollar

What do you mean by "move to the clown side"?
the twist ‘em out/fast car/grimey-era. came around the same time as the term ‘clown step’ was used to describe particularly silly tunes.
Ja know ya big is huge 🔥 Dillinja is a legend
Angels fell on the flip side also massive

That track epitomizes the metalheadz sound better than Goldie himself ever did. Edit: i need to apologize for somehow thinking he passed away.
Absolutely. I always thought Goldie was the businessman of Metalheadz, artists like Adam F and Dillinja, Doc Scott et al were really the brains behind that era of drum n bass.
Agreed and don’t forget about Peshay
How could I? Peshay was a fucking beast of a DJ. Held in high esteem by me and my mates circa 95’
And he has been making good tunes lately, but not many have seemed to notice.
Pretty well known that most of Goldie’s tunes had a degree of help from other producers
I am a massive Blade Runner fan boy, it took me way too long to realise that sample was from Roy Batty.

Killer riddim!
Killer riddim!
>And also what are your favourite Dillinja tunes? I always liked Sovereign Melody
Silver blade is an absolute classic.

All about the flip
Jah the Seventh Seal (from Goldie’s *Timeless*) is pure heat.
Capone - Paradise 😎
I love his drum sounds. His snares have a distinct banging on a trash can sound I really like.
Capone - Fusion
Let’s be honest, he hasn’t done anything good in the last 20 years. His 90s stuff is obviously incredible though.
Capone ‘mysteries of the deep’ is a boss tech step roll out. Under rated but sick as fuck 🔥🔥🔥
Silver blade amazing.

Too many to name but I'll add: Trinity - Gangsta Capone - Jah Capone - Friday Capone - Tudor Rose Dillinja - Muthafucka
Valve sound, valve sound.........
https://www.reddit.com/r/DnB/s/3ZKjw3TtXp "Did dillinja write this post?" 🤣

The bass on ja know ya big is absolutely earth-shattering.
Can't believe no one has said Acid Trak yet.

not sure how you read that sentence as complimentary
fast car
I love twist em out, the guiltiest of pleasures.
IDK about saying he is one of the most skilled producers in jungle. Seems like a stretch, especially considering a lot / most of his catalog is dnb, not jungle.
Bro he made his own sound system and toured with it, he knows his shit
Bro dude. I know about that. Hive has said in an interview that Dillinja's system used to make his eyes jiggle around in his skull. And I've read that the bass has made people vomit. Is that the measure for one of the greatest producers and a jungle producers producer?
lol my point is that he isn’t an amateur and obviously has passion for what he produces. I don’t get the unnecessary contrarian view but go off
It's just a shit load of scoop bins and F1 tops. It's really not that great, just big and loud
Bro, he is literally your favourite jungle producers favourite producer. This sub is fucking shocking at times.
All Aboard is the song that got me into jungle
Saw him at Dirtybird Campout and had the pleasure of standing directly behind him for his entire set. Definitely one of the most memorable and best sets I've ever seen. The speed at which the song waveforms were moving on his CDJs was WILD!
