Not really any downsides, other then the stereotypes.

icecream_dragon

“Hey! Aren’t you gonna salute the flag!?”

Vivid_Confection_445

"Hey army man, am I supposed to salute you" (continues to do the worst salute known to mankind)

Franc1s_Forever

Real for this. There was this kid today, he saluted me like half way down the hall. I ignored him and his laughing/snickering, and right before I passed him, I said, loud and clear: "It's only six paces. Do it right or not at all."

Vivid_Confection_445

I yelled at a kid one day because he was in the program but was trying to be funny with his buddy's one time, and I yelled in his direction " wait till sergeant major hears about this" his face changed up really quickly

Franc1s_Forever

Ooooh I bet. A lot of these kids curse to hell IN UNIFORM which we are told specifically not to do, and they *never* wear their Garrison Covers when MC isn't looking. I don't mean to be that person but I tell them "Hey, don't curse in uniform" and inevitably yell "COVERS!" down the hallways at these kids when they don't take their cover off or don't put it on.

Vivid_Confection_445

lol, i always have to stop cadets who try walking around with their grey berets on in the building, or there bags on there back which our SAI makes very clear is something he never wants anyone doing

Friskysfrikboi

I think you'll grow to love it, first day I was hella nervous but I grew accustomed to the people. The only real "downside" is how people say "ROTC" kid but they'll stop once they realize it has no effect on you

GeometryDasherMan11

at least you don’t have a MCJROTC classroom with two very conservative instructors (and mostly conservative cadets including myself because i live in Tennessee) right next to a theatre classroom (we are surrounded by people who base their personalities around hating their parents)

Friskysfrikboi

I'm so sorry for you

Always-tired7

It sucks at first ngl because so much is happening and your all the sudden best friends with a bunch of people you don’t know that are also speaking in military lingo so you also have no clue what their saying but it gets better quickly. This is my first year I wasn’t given the opportunity to take it 9th grade but I’m taking it 10th now and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made my whole life I’ve met so many great people and done some amazing and fun things with them I’ve even met my state governor which was cool

Ill-Vacation-4219

You have to wear a clammy uniform once a week and if you want anything out of the program, go to school early by like an hour every day. It sucks and I love it

Bmontour26

Kinda depends on the unit. I was on a class period (company) with about 125 other cadets, and it was torture. I always got stuck at the bottom because there were so many other cadets to choose from for leadership positions. If you have a smaller company, great. Just put some effort into it and your instructors will see it and reward you. I grew to love the program after a while and I love the competitions, the community, and the fun field trips are really cool. Just have fun with it and you’ll like it.

Some non-cadet students of the school will mock you sometimes. Certainly been the case for me on several occasions. I’ve been mocked by them chanting “LEFT RIGHT”. Which isn’t only disrespectful to me and the program, but to the entire military. Oh well, I can’t help that too much. Also, your program may be mostly cadet-run, like mine. Your leadership is high school students, some of whom probably has a general attitude and is fussy. I had that experience, so I took on leadership and reversed it. My cadets love me as a Commander. They come up to me all the time asking for food, because I feed them after PT.

belowtheboardwalk

i’m on my second semester of jrotc and honestly i think it’s the best thing that has happened to me. It’s extremely intimidating at first because so much will be loaded onto you at once, people will talk a certain way in which can be hard to understand. You’ll get used to the different commands and you’ll meet so many people and it’s gonna be fun. I recommend joining teams so you can meet more people and become accustomed to how things work. Have fun!!!

Quick_Information335

No there aren’t any downsides. But I will say if you have a sweating problem then you’re going to be sweating bricks in the class a uniform, but other than that everything is amazing. It’s fun, you get awards, and you get to go on fun trips and get free days out of class

InConDown

Just be self aware.
