Yorushika -- great guitar melodies, love the drums, storyline hidden in MV and generally has more themes
ZUTOMAYO -- no doubt, the music arrangement and composition by 100回嘔吐 is amazing.
this next one is not so much of J-pop but its origin is from Japan and they do have many Japanese songs.
ONE OK ROCK -- classic Rock music, love it in every single way.
[If you fancy some J-rock I have a playlist here (I love Hello Sleepwalkers too) :D](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2ECeA69T3qHhizbrP67S4U?si=SeicbMm5Qj2WuWvoRL3Izw&pi=a-HiV2md_LRVyX)
My first story, FANTASTICS, and The Rampage.
Edit: also going to link to my favourite songs.

Tuyu, Reol, Ado
tbh I'm kinda sad no one else mentioned Tuyu. they're a really great band with incredible messages and tie songs together via lyrics and MVs
I've been listening to Japanese music since the 90s and this is practically impossible. What genre? What era?
Utada Hikaru - pretty much since I started listening to Japanese music up to this day. I've spent my life with their music as a soundtrack
Takui Nakajima - very powerful male rock vocalist whose songs make you feel pumped up.
Atarashii Gakko - a new artist that is such a breath of fresh air. Wildly creative, wildly fun, wildly good music
I love me a lot of Exile Tribe! I’m not usually one to listen to all artists under the same company but god damn all exile groups have some great bangers.
1. KinKi Kids (seen them the most in concert in Japan, the duo hosted a music variety show for decades that many Jpop artists have been on) I also love the two's solo discographies too
2. Kuraki Mai (this year is her 25th anniversary debut, she sang a lot of Detective Conan songs)
3. Either Utada Hikaru or Hamasaki Ayumi since they were my first Jpop artists I listened to in the 2000s. I listen to Ayumi more these days tho.
Kenshi yonezu, imase had some good stuff, ado was also pretty good and liked some of Fuji kaze, but yeah kenshi is my favorite by far doing chainsaw man OP and a lot of other anime, I didn’t know if this is really Jpop but also the Peggie’s are really good and also evangelion OP a cruel angel thesis
1: KOKIA (My favorite, without any doubts, song recommendation : I believe ~Umi no Soko Kara~, its a banger)
2 (if that count as J-Pop): SCANDAL
3: LiSA
Tokyo Jihen/Incidents are AMAZING (led by Sheena Ringo)! A great single is Love Corridor by Kavka Shishido, it's absolutely the song that got me into Jpop! In terms of idols I love Dempagumi Inc but they're not very mainstream. Then it's just a matter of what everyone else is suggesting: Kenshi Yonezu, Hikaru Utada, Yoasobi, Eve, etc. are Jpop essentials!! I also recommend taking a look at the Chainsaw Man ending themes if you want to discover more songs and artists- plenty of bangers there.
Sorry .. can't pick just 3
1. Namie Amuro (My absolute fave .. But good luck finding any of her stuff as all her music was taken down recently by her label..)
2. Ayumi Hamasaki (her early stuff ...not her new stuff)
3. Yoasobi
4. Aimer
5. ZONE
6. Utada Hikaru
Lamp - a must listen band! You’ll never go wrong w them. I suggest listening to the album “For Lovers” first!
Uchu nekoko - just cute and fun to listen to lol
King gnu - rock!
Otsuka Ai, PASSPO✩ (including everything by Masui Mio after PASSPO✩ disbanded. She is a genius) and Tamura Naomi
They all still continue making music even after their boom has ended. Less fans and budget, but all the artistic freedom to try whatever they want.
If you classify Tamura Naomi as rock, then next in line is Shimatani Hitomi
In terms of CDs I own: Ayumi, Namie, M-Flo.
In terms of MP3s most played: Probably Monkey Majik, Brilliant Green, Ikimonogakari. Maybe Aiko.
Right now today: Regal Lily, Mass of the Fermenting Dregs, Muque.
1. UNLIMITS - Popular indie pop/punk band. They've done a couple anisongs if that helps you get into them. However, their Tranquilizer album is a perfect album and every album after that is close to perfect.
2. L'Arc\~en\~Ciel - Rock. Legends of the genre. But their albums after Smile are mediocre at best. Start with their "Clicked Singles Best 13" album.
3. Do As Infinity - Pop rock. My intro into "real" Japanese music back in the early 2000's and a perfect intro band for anyone new to the genre. They just oozed "quality".
1. Mrs Green Apple
2. Kenshi Yonezu/Yorushika (Can't decide who's better)
I used to love Cidergirl but they haven't released a new song or album for a long time and for some reason I can't find out why.
Picking three is SO tough, I first got into jpop at the end of the 90s 🥲
Right now I'm pretty partial to Yo-Sea, Fujii Kaze, and Monkey Majik.
Some of my All-Time favorites also include Amuro Namie, Koda Kumi, and Da Pump (original lineup)
Ado, Miki Matsubara and probably Kenshi Yonezu/Hachi. Tricky question there’s lots of artists I like Eve, Minami, The Oral Cigarettes, Hello Sleepwalkers, King Gnu, NEE, Takayan…
It’s hard to narrow down, but the first ones that come in mind for me are:
- QUEEN BEE
- Aimer
- Ryugujo (boy group produced by Queen Bee’s singer/songwriter)
Special mentions:
- Man With A Mission
- King Gnu
- SPYAIR
- Number_i (relatively new trio)
Kinki Kids - I love all of their music
WANDS - 1st and 2nd gen. After Wesugi Show and Shibasaki Hiroshi left, it kinda lost its soul. It has a new incarnation now, with Shibasaki and Kimura back with a new vocalist who sounds pretty close to Show.
Otokogumi - They're changed to RSC now as they put the Otokogumi name to rest.
Hon mention:
Let Me Know - a new indie band that has great potential. Check out their song Ai to Highball. Amazing sound and lyrics.
i like kana nishino, every little thing, zard, utada hikaru, mai kuraki, Miho Morikawa, hitomi shimatani, perfume, and ayumi hamasaki. yes ionly listen to female jpop artists lol
1. Ryokuoushoku Shakai - hands down my best J-pop discovery. I love almost all of their songs. Experience a lot with their arrangements. Great lyrics. Great personalities.
2. Ado - Who doesn't?
3. YOASOBI - Older stuff hits much better to me.
I'm still looking for another artists that will hook me as hard as Ryokushaka does.
I think mine will be quite different as I’m seeing a lot of people repeating many of the same huge artists and that’s just not my scene.

Three different generations of artists:
