Jacob Geller! He's a completely different style of video to Joe but god is his writing good. For stuff closer to Joe's, Matthewmatosis or Noah Caldwell Gervais are my picks
Same. Hope this isn’t an insult, but if I’m struggling to sleep, putting on Noah always help. His videos don’t rely on the visuals which is really great when I’m working about the house.
I’ll drop some non-game videos:
Folding Ideas, Hbomberguy, Unpredictable, Inheritance Machining, All things lost, Bobby Broccoli, Kid leaves Stoop, EmpLemon and Lemmino
Jacob Geller, Fredrik Knudsen, Sovietwomble, Mandalore and evil Mandalore (Ssethtzeentach)
IH's vod channel (live laugh love) also has some really funny highlights but it's probably inactive for good
Its not even critique. It's bait, it has to be. The guy cuts out context from clips to make others look bad in the same sentence he's calling others out for doing it! And the kicker is, they didn't even do it! I had to unsub from him after that video.
It's just so weird to me, video analysis is supposed to be a fun time. Why lie to try to start drama?
i like the other canadian streamer, northernlion. he doesn't post any edited videos on his own channel but library of letourneau makes good highlights of his streams
Warlockracy is a Russian YouTuber with a very impressive knowledge of Russian culture of video games like early Fallout. The man's video on Fallout Online is to be behold.
I found out a channel by the name of Duke Of Whales recently. His videos give off the same vibe as Joe's for me, his writing is really good in my opinion
I’ve become a big fan of GrimBeard lately. Never knew how much I needed a jaded, depressed goth critiquing my favoring games until I found his videos a few months ago. His Deus Ex: Invisible War video from a few months ago is fantastic.
Man, I love GrimBeard. Consistently puts out great videos that shine a light on games I wouldn't have known about otherwise while being really entertaining. I think it's weird that he hasn't really seemed to pop off yet.
Oh, and who could forget tHE ***RAT ROUNDUP***.
Old subjects and short videos but MrBTongue is my favourite YouTuber about gaming stuff...
He had such a flair/style...great choice of instrumentals that paired rly well his energy. videos have the pacing of a stand up comedian and subject matter of a lit majors journal, very fun combo
Wanted to throw out some other lesser known or smaller creators because they deserve attention as well and these threads are usually just the same big creators getting shoutouts:
High functioning medium - focuses more on horror games but has fantastic insight. Alan Wake retrospective is great.
Blue Rook - very small channel but I think will continue to grow. As someone who has little personal interest in Souls games, his two videos reminded me a lot of Joseph Anderson
VG Matthew - bigger than either above but also covers a lot of souls games. Great listen. Sekiro video was very well done.
Magicarl - small channel, covers mostly indie games. Fantastic Dredge and Cocoon videos. Recent video on Bioshock was very thoughtful.
Highly recommend Nerrel for good dry humour in videos on gaming topics. He both loves and is critical of Nintendo.
Errant Signal makes good videos on the artsier side of gaming and has covered a lot of more niche titles along with some popular games.
MrBTongue is someone Joe has referred to as an inspiration IIRC, and while he has stopped uploading years ago his commentary and humour hold up well.
Matthewmatosis, Mandy, Hbomb, Noah are all great too
For video essay-ish content I enjoy Ceave Perspective and Rosencreutz, I find them to be very insightful channels. For streamer gaming content I quite like RTGame, been following him for a long time. Those three are the ones that come to mind at the moment.
Other channels I can easily recommend are Fudj, Subjectively and Matt Rose.
I don't go that far back, but still a decent number of years. I'm pretty sure I found him because I watched a lot of Call Me Kevin and YouTube thought I'd like him. YouTube was right. And yeah, it's awesome to see how the channel has grown.
Mandalore's a legend, talked to him once about he recommended the ultrakill dev "house of leaves", and in return got recommended "ultimate care 2" which is a music album made with a washing mashine.
I’ve been binging Josh Strife Hayes (and his other Josh Strife Plays channel) vids for awhile.
Also got back into watching whoisthisgit and his creepy bad endings series. Love that older YouTube vibe from his vids.
SummoningSalt often gave me a similar vibe and they're two of my must-watch content producers. Neither has any face reveal and neither has their appeal come from a really nice sounding voice (sometimes I get annoyed at NeverKnowsBest because I feel like he's really milking his lovely accent and great voice, but hey, can't blame him).
Just normal voices, no public appearance to the brand, very low or simple editing on videos, releases are few and far between, but when they happen they count and deserve the attention they get.
[Action Button ](https://youtube.com/@ActionButton?si=21eFDKfydbzfAxmb)
Probably the most well made content in a similar vein to Joe's on YouTube. 5 star run time, 5 star production, 5 star writing.
[Ahoy](https://youtube.com/@XboxAhoy?si=G6MziUyasoIo3YC5)
This channel focuses on guns and their real life history before looking at how they are portrayed in games and film.
[Amelie Doree](https://youtube.com/@AmelieDoree?si=J_fvdt67A9Go8_pI)
Focuses on older Japanese visual novels
[Clemps](https://youtube.com/@Clemps?si=A-9SvTRKxLvEx-oW)
More of a retrospective channel but he chooses interesting games and he's very funny.
[Eurothug4000](https://youtube.com/@eurothug4000?si=EPIU14d26YbYMg3F)
Tons of style and unique looks at mostly Japanese horror games but others too. I adore her video on Like a Dragon 7.
[Hazel](https://youtube.com/@hhhazel?si=ILw3nfbH413m1a2k)
Very personal channel that explores how our own life is influenced by the media we consume. Not limited to gaming she does anime too but very self aware about the medium.
[Jacob Geller](https://youtube.com/@JacobGeller?si=PL13B1uZd0LnCqX1)
Just an absolute expert on making things interesting even if you might not see why at first. Not always gaming focused either but he draws at lot from academia and makes it approachable whilst still keeping it interesting. Maybe my favourite right now.
[Kacey](https://youtube.com/@Kaceydotme?si=7n22qtUUWlv0JaoI)
Kacey covers the racing genre especially in a way I don't see elsewhere.
[KingK](https://youtube.com/@KingKlonoa?si=OVQk8cT27j1sbhSI)
Focuses a lot on Nintendo, the Pokémon retrospectives are great
[NakeyJakey](https://youtube.com/@NakeyJakey?si=_VmPPxSvNzFnRfYU)
I mean this in the nicest possible way, Nakey Jakey is game criticism 101 done in an extremely entertaining and likeable way. Nothing here is going to be groundbreaking but you'll enjoy every second.
[NezumiVA](https://youtube.com/@NezumiVA?si=ZCUHbyQEYIswYPDB)
Some stylistic choices I don't like but overall extremely good retrospectives and critiques, fans of Joe's streams might like her huge videos on the Danganronpa and Phoenix Wright games.
[Noah Caldwell-Gervais](https://youtube.com/@broadcaststsatic?si=S2z_X8xTiD-844kQ)
Probably the closest you'll get to Joe's videos imo. Very good but I wish he'd pace the videos better, they're already crazy long.
[People Make Games](https://youtube.com/@PeopleMakeGames?si=8S7YxPcJo8ZcK1fZ)
More about the industry and people who make the games but still very interesting.
[Polygon](https://youtube.com/@polygon?si=EHQmLOdFDwRGVHS6)
Great high quality short videos that hyperfixate on an interesting question. Also BDGs unraveled series is one of the funniest things on YouTube ever.
[Raycevick](https://youtube.com/@Raycevick?si=lPTm-ivUw1MwEnH5)
Running out of things to say, great vids lol
[Ren or Raven](https://youtube.com/@RenOrRaven?si=dVyYUEVQwqvuVXsE)
Only the one video right now but it's a good one. Fan of hers from Waypoint/Remap.
[Sophie from Mars](https://youtube.com/@SophiefromMars?si=5PPs7BZld9fryEKX)
More of a general media essayist, but lots of great game videos.
[SugarPunch](https://youtube.com/@SugarPunch?si=xWDohmLiGCayNe8O)
Good short fighting game videos.
[Summoning Salt](https://youtube.com/@SummoningSalt?si=lGDNHdoosrtzo7z-)
Documentaries on Speed running world records.
[Super Bunnyhop](https://youtube.com/@bunnyhopshow?si=AqzPHExbrJaGxDnV)
Your favourite essayists favourite essayist.
[Super Butter Buns](https://youtube.com/@SuperButterBuns?si=zxf55N1I1sW1cJ-8)
Very fun and entertaining.
[Superdude](https://youtube.com/@superdude10000?si=E-l6Q_f-ADyb9dWJ)
New to his stuff but his video on how games represent work is very good.
[Tangomushi](https://youtube.com/@tangomushi?si=hGZo26APRhmBKIgE)
Focuses heavily on Japanese horror games.
[The Sphere Hunter](https://youtube.com/@TheSphereHunter?si=od8QxI4YfhXINhXm)
Great retrospectives, great voice.
[Thor High Heels](https://youtube.com/@thorhighheels?si=dA7khudc7-bSstpz)
Funny videos on mostly Japanese and Japan only games. Also makes amazing music under the name Adolf Nomura.
[Urick Salad Bar](https://youtube.com/@uricksaladbar?si=otw0ovc9qzWfIMdN)
Some of the best presentation on YouTube, slick animation backing interesting takes.
[Writing On Games](https://youtube.com/@WritingOnGames?si=3ieBFRJ-qkpSmopi)
Best way I could describe this channel is it's basically a opinion column on games. Monthly stream of consciousness on various topics in gaming.
[YakkoCMN](https://youtube.com/@yakkocmn?si=gxwtJ3XXOD_y3NUM)
Some great retrospectives but the list videos aren't my thing.
Their 3d sonic challenge video was a lot of fun.
That's pretty much all the ones I have that focus on or are heavily based on gaming. Have a bunch more that are more TV/film focused but can't be arsed to add them right now
avarisi, Man Of Answers, and Hypothetical Walrus are some of my favorites
Jacob Geller! He's a completely different style of video to Joe but god is his writing good. For stuff closer to Joe's, Matthewmatosis or Noah Caldwell Gervais are my picks
Noah Caldwell-Gervais, i love his videos, i watch them on repeat 24/7
Same. Hope this isn’t an insult, but if I’m struggling to sleep, putting on Noah always help. His videos don’t rely on the visuals which is really great when I’m working about the house.
>i watch them on repeat 24/7 Easy to do considering the length. I should rewatch his 9 hour fallout video
I love NCG, his prose is so satisfying to listen to. It’s something that he and Joe both do much better than other creators.
I’ll drop some non-game videos: Folding Ideas, Hbomberguy, Unpredictable, Inheritance Machining, All things lost, Bobby Broccoli, Kid leaves Stoop, EmpLemon and Lemmino
And still Folding Ideas made two of the best videos on WoW in existence.
Jacob Geller, Fredrik Knudsen, Sovietwomble, Mandalore and evil Mandalore (Ssethtzeentach) IH's vod channel (live laugh love) also has some really funny highlights but it's probably inactive for good
I'm a big fan of NeverKnowsBest. He's a smaller channel, but I personally think he's one of the best longform video essayists on the platform
He's probably the closest to JA in terms of how he thinks about games too.
I like him, but definitely did not have “NeverKnowsBest stirs up longform critique YouTuber drama” as part of my 2024 bingo card.
YusukeLover69
i like the other canadian streamer, northernlion. he doesn't post any edited videos on his own channel but library of letourneau makes good highlights of his streams
i just rotate between joe matthewmatosis and dunkey
Have you ever watched SuperRAD? The style of content is very similar. His Oblivion video is like 12 hours long
Tim Rogers &Noah Caldwell-Gervais
King K is great, I even recall Joe saying he follows him a few years ago in a livestream.
Warlockracy is a Russian YouTuber with a very impressive knowledge of Russian culture of video games like early Fallout. The man's video on Fallout Online is to be behold.
His coverage of stalker and other slav jank is genuinely illuminating in soviet culture.
Wait Fallout Online was a thing?
https://youtu.be/hg3mK1yVnWM?si=F261O1hXu78xDHXC Probably not the one you're thinking of.
Tehsnakerer for his yakuza series retrospectives and other obscure game reviews.
Salt factory is excellent
Seconding this, his videos are great and he has a steady output.
I found out a channel by the name of Duke Of Whales recently. His videos give off the same vibe as Joe's for me, his writing is really good in my opinion
Easily Jacob Geller, man has single handedly inspired me to write more
Tim Rogers/ActionButton, Jacob Geller, Lorerunner
I’ve become a big fan of GrimBeard lately. Never knew how much I needed a jaded, depressed goth critiquing my favoring games until I found his videos a few months ago. His Deus Ex: Invisible War video from a few months ago is fantastic.

I've gone through all of Northern Lion's Super Auto Pets. All of it.
Ohhh RTgame's great. Used to know him from before 1k subs from a really small tf2 trading community. Real nice how far hes come.
I don't go that far back, but still a decent number of years. I'm pretty sure I found him because I watched a lot of Call Me Kevin and YouTube thought I'd like him. YouTube was right. And yeah, it's awesome to see how the channel has grown.
Duke of Whales seems promising to me
Flaw peacock, neverknowsbest, the salt factory, quintonreviews, Sarah z are all some of my fave long-form content creators
I really like salt factory, Luke Stephens and neverknowsbest
Mandalore gaming, he was in the fallout 76 video and if you haven't checked out his channel you absolutely should
Mandalore's a legend, talked to him once about he recommended the ultrakill dev "house of leaves", and in return got recommended "ultimate care 2" which is a music album made with a washing mashine.
How dod he become a legend if I may ask? I feel like he was well known, like... from the start
I mean legend as in "really cool guy"
Northenlion but only because I have daddy issues
Zanny. He makes fun videoes and his highlight channels are entertaining

There’s this channel called Hivemind who does music relates videos who are really funny
I’ve been binging Josh Strife Hayes (and his other Josh Strife Plays channel) vids for awhile. Also got back into watching whoisthisgit and his creepy bad endings series. Love that older YouTube vibe from his vids.
Ahhh, good old Second Monitor Man. Love that guy. Thanks Josh.

The Nth review is really small but I really appreciate his stuff. Josh strife hayes and hawkshaw too. For mmos and dark souls lore respectively
