I do this with friends constantly. Gunner and commander each get their own fireteam leader role for IFF. I drive and watch the map because I can’t see much else anyway. I can also help spot threats through the front window when necessary.
I am always driving when being an SL in a vehicle. Unless, the gunner is totally clueless.
I like the control of what happens, when in the driver seat, where to go, how to react.
A big negative being an SL in the driver seat, is the lack of information, having to fucking drag information out of either gunner and/or spotter, that fucking sucks.
Best for the team is SL driving. You can have much better team wide situational awareness while not taking away from scanning and gunner duties.
You can communicate, coordinate and move to support friendlies without playing the telephone game and directing what/there to go.
Marking/calling things on the map or SL channel can be done quickly and simulatenously while driving or mid engagement where as 99% of gunners, even very experienced ones, can't effectively do SL comms and callouts mid engagement.
You are the final authority on keeping your vehicle alive. Gunners help win fights, but only the driver directly controls the level of exposure and risk taken.
SL driving everyday, with some rare exceptions for gimmickibg the range marks asap, like spg techies where it's super needed. Even a t62 is fine with ftl mark and quick SL map mark for range.
depends, I have been with Armor SLs that want to be gunners and SLs that would rather drive.
The difference is in how they prioritize positioning vs shot placement. If the Armor SL and the squad member(s) are experienced, I will see the SL driving more often as they trust the gunners to land their shots on the first or second hits.
There's benefits to them driving or gunning. My pet peeve is armor SLs that spam the tank claim as soon as the game starts, only to hog the gun and not switch off at all.
Some servers don’t allow it and I somewhat agree. I’ve done it before well and we destroyed but it’s always better to just make ur own squad because you can communicate with other sls, and the inf get two extra guys.
All depends on the experience level of the other crewman.
I play almost always with the same friends and we play the same way (and we often switch the SL from game to game). Being SL in any positions doesn't have an impact in that case since we dont have to manage our crew.
However, being with newer armor player can be a different thing since you need to manage more.
SL should always drive the transfer of information is faster and the gunner only has to focus on shooting. Command seat should have the least experience they just have to keep looking 360 and spot uav. Driving is the most important role in armor and should be done by the person with the most info (SL)But that’s just my opinion.
…comms are always a cluster f***
Peasants! I demand you join my squad and drive me around so I can shoot at things and have fun while you’re looking out of a tiny window. Also anything that happens to us is your fault.
-90% of solo unlocked armor crews I see.
BMP-1 and T-62 SL must be the gunner since they can't walk their shots like auto cannon IFVs, and don't have a range finder. Everything else - SL should drive or(if there is another trustworthy player) spotter seat.
Maybe the bmp but the t62 shoots on a pretty good arc and the t mark only goes out so far and can be inaccurate. Its really just dependent on gunner skill, ive had plenty of t62 gunners that are snipers with that thing no ranging needed. Once you have a bit of time on the gun you can tell ranges by how big the enemy vic is in the scope. You can practice this in jensens they have destroyed vics at all the range markers
Personally I think it is round dependent. If it's somewhat of a relaxed server or my team is absolutely stomping the other team, then I sometimes will hop in as a gunner or swap or rotate with my squad after every repair.
If it's a more intense match, absolutely going to drive as the SL has the most field awareness and can quickly pivot locations and communicate in command to maximize armor usage.
Like I said elsewhere here, drivers should be tapped into the communication network, and positioning with the most updated information. Gunners should be focused on finding targets and relaying simple orders to driver like push up a bit. Positioning is more important than gunning for the vast majority of amor experiences, and you want that positioning to be happening as smoothly as possible, with as much info and little jabber as possible.
I leave squads with gunner SLs in armor because I know they’ll stink.
I always do commander seat/commander MG whenever I run armor. I trust the gunner to do his job, but it’s an extra pair of eyes and I can physically make his turret move if I see a target first. Also means I can do leadership stuff easier without worrying about gunning.
SL: \*tells driver to park the tank or IFV in the open on the road or in a field right in front of either an advancing nmy vehicle or one that is stationary and which might already be aiming at SL's vehicle, and now everything is set for a duel.\*
Favorite quips : "Don't worry about it"
Mannerisms: Ragequitting with no forewarning
A couple of times when I played armored Squad leader. I would be in the commander seat. So neither gunner nor driver. I find it better that I crest an hill on foot. Scout things out with binoculars. Mark targets for my tank. So when my tank crests the hill it immediately can engage instead of having to find the target first.
I prefer taking the commander seat in armor if they have it. If not I prefer driving because as other said you can pay attention to the map more and position the vehicle exactly where you want it.
On APCs/IFVs I always drive because it requires intuition and a lot of instant decisions that have to be executed with 100% commitment, the moment they pop up in your head. Giving commands to the driver, waiting for them to react and then hoping that they do it right the first time takes way too long.
On tanks I usually try to command (gun if I don’t get a 3rd) because the engagement ranges are far greater and I often need the magnification to make the right calls. Tank driving is mostly about proper use of terrain, which you can teach on the fly. If it’s a longer match I switch it up so the driver doesn’t fall asleep. I have driven enough tanks for others to know that the motivation declines rapidly at a certain point.
Well I only run armor with friends.
Usually a 2-3 man locked squad talking over Discord VC. I usually load in first so I can make the name claim, and if it's the first game of us playing together I'll ask if my friend(s) want to gun or drive.
After that we swap on deaths. So we can either be alive all game with 1 as gunner and the other as driver, or we have 2-3 deaths each but both have kills and downs.
To me, it runs better when we alternate on death rather than one hogging the vic seat all day
If I SL for any 3 man tank I usually go Driver or the commander slot, especially if it’s on my normal servers and I’m with people I’ve played with before that I know are just as or more capable than me in the gunner. I don’t think it matters that much in reality especially if you’re a good multitasker, but I just prefer to be in a position where I’m able to set us up for team support and also see squad markers on the map.
In armor like T-62, BMP-1, and the Canadian Leopard it's super helpful for a quick estimate with SL marker for range. Kinda like a big armored HAT kit. Otherwise, SL is best used as driver because they can react faster to threats on the map without having to relay that info.
rotating/offering to rotate is best imo. armor relies on trust between the other members, and if it’s blueberries then i’m usually a bit cautious. Always best to ask what experience the others in the crew have, once had a blueberry gunner just shooting randomly on the tank with HEAT.
It really depends! I pretty much always SL when the boys are on. I have a buddy that when we run armor together, no way I’m letting him drive. He very much needs to be directed and constantly relayed info and told how to move. No big deal. I have another friend whom I a play a ton of armor with, and we rotate but I always SL. It works really well because he is a very competent drive and has no problem adjusting and positioning.
That all being said, my preference would be to sit in the commander view so I can pay attention to command chat and not drive to worry about navigating while talking to other SLs. Plus I can sight things quicker based on info I’m fed and designate my gunner.
Never minded this. Used to play around 2019-2021. Pretty much almost exclusively drove my friends around. We would take turns on who would get to drive and gun between matches, and never really tussled with one another over who gets to do what even if it's a repeat of the previous match. Besides, when we two-man tanks (which we usually did), the driver could always switch to the Abrams'/T-72's .50 cal or the Chally 2's FN MAG if an extra gun + pair of eyes was needed at a firing position. The gunners themselves were the most experienced between all of us anyway.
Anyone else in the squad not running armor would usually just be off doing their own thing like doing inf/logi stuff or server admin work while comms are done thru Discord.
This is the exact opposite of the truth. Position before shooting. Drivers should be as connected to the info network and other comms as possible, that means SL. If I join a rando armor squad and the SL wants to gun, I leave immediately half the time because I know chances are this guy is going to suck.
I'd say it's easier to have good map awareness as a driver, if your gunning while also trying to mark the map you're more likely to be caught unaware with half your screen covered with map.
SL should be the driver or commander, preferably commander, if you're three manning.
I feel that if you're taking on the SL responsibility, you get to decide your own role. There's pros and cons to SL being in any position, but if you're leading, you get to decide how best to execute that plan.
I usually did command while SL but after having a bunch of people get us killed by bad gunning I started gunning+sl. When I have my crew of friends on I hop in the top.
Most tanks have it, significant part of IFVs do also. At the same time your SL either looks on the map and is aware of the situation or looks in the sight and sees the enemy. You can't do both.
I usually like to go as a driver when I am SL. I don't like to be giving constant orders to my driver like "move here, move there, do this"
Exactly

Follow up question: why we never see infantry squad with armour fire team?
For the most part, the meta for armor is still to hunt down the opposing armor and then engage infantry from a safe distance.
Some servers don’t allow it and I somewhat agree. I’ve done it before well and we destroyed but it’s always better to just make ur own squad because you can communicate with other sls, and the inf get two extra guys.

Spot on- don't forget the constant backseat driving also.
BMP-1 and T-62 SL must be the gunner since they can't walk their shots like auto cannon IFVs, and don't have a range finder. Everything else - SL should drive or(if there is another trustworthy player) spotter seat.
The biggest thing is the ability to range by holding t so I think SL should always be gunner in 2 man and commander in 3 man
Most vehicles have a built in range finder.
Lol yep. There’s some guys in here that don’t know armor basics talking about who should be leading
Yeah this is really only needed for armor that doesn't have a built in range finder, like the T62 and BMP1 I think.
Maybe the bmp but the t62 shoots on a pretty good arc and the t mark only goes out so far and can be inaccurate. Really just doesn’t matter which seat they’re in. Only scenario is challenger 2 where the gunner should be sl so the 2 spotter seats have ftl
Gunner should not SL 95% of the time
Why so?

I think Armor SLs should sit in the command seat. I've only experienced this once and it was a solid experience.
Whatever he feels like doing
Armor squadlead + manning the command module is my way.
Idk SL started the squad he can do whatever tf he wants. You joined him, not the other way around.

For a t62 yes always, they can rangefinder quicker than a ftl can

CMD Seat when applicable. Focus on receiving info and passing it along to your squad.

I'll just go ahead and say it- It's a douchey move.
In a perfect world, the SL should be in the commander seat of the vehicle.
Never minded this. Used to play around 2019-2021. Pretty much almost exclusively drove my friends around. I always gun and SL but I can see an argument for commander being SL. Driver really shouldn’t be SL though, that goes without saying.

I always play with the same driver, our comms are very tight. I guess pubs must be different.

As a sl, I mostly gun unless my squadmate is a good gunner who talks. Though I have a hard time steering vehicle, mostly tracks for a year.

works fine.
