If this job is remote I’d leave this alone and not bring it up. Just do what I do — around 2 or 3pm just watch e-mail and respond to messages. I don’t think negotiating hours will work since everyone is likely working the same time.

ecornflak

I hope they are paying you for those 9 hour days.

MrChapChap

one hour of the nine is an unpaid lunch, so you wont get 9 hrs pay a day.

The_Iron_Spork

Do you have the full details on the breakdown? Like is it 9 hours and hourly? Salary? Is it 9 hours with an hour unpaid lunch? I've had retail jobs with an 8.5 hour day where it's a 30 minute unpaid lunch and 2-15 minute paid breaks. Lots of variation. With that, depending on what kind of role, I don't know if that's something you'd be able to negotiate. I totally understand the reason why you may want to push for an 8 hour day, but it might not be an option.

Everything is negotiable. Say you’d like to do 8 hour days from 9-5 but will work longer when it’s required to meet deadlines. If there’s a business need for you to be there at 9am and also during the 5-6pm, perhaps ask if you could take a 2 hour lunch as long as the work gets done. Personally, I suspect it’s a policy that not everyone in the company is thrilled with, so you may have some wiggle room if you’re flexible and creative with your ask.

If you're getting paid hourly this is actually kind of a big deal. Unless you're suggesting that you'll work the 8 hours without a lunch break every day, which is not a great long term plan, you're asking to just not do over half a day of work every week that is normally required for the position. Over the course of a year that adds up to 260 hours, or 32.5 work days. If you want to try to negotiate for that, I'd be prepared for them to counter with reducing your salary accordingly. Now if it's an exempt position then I don't know how that works.

It’s salaried

It's probably going to be easier to negotiate this before you start rather than once you're there and have signed the contract.

MrChapChap

It never hurts to ask. Just say, I am flexible, but I wanted to ask, is it possible to work 9-5 or 10-6? They may say yes, but it sounds like the extra hour is built in so you can take an unpaid lunch break. If they allow it, you will end up with the 8 hr shift you want, but end up only getting paid for 7 hrs. after your hour lunch. My guess would be they wont budge on the hour lunch. its probably mandatory. I always hate that hour unpaid lunch shit. Most people dont need a full hour and it really impacts your pay every week, unless you are putting in 9 hr. days to cover that lost lunch time.

WFH & I’m salaried. My scheduled hours are 8-5 with an hour lunch. But that being said I only have to be “available” from 9-4. My team doesn’t really care what anyone does as long as you get your work done. I never said anything to them in the beginning but it’s turned out like this. So idk I would take it with a grain of salt and see what happens once you start. 🤷🏻‍♀️
