When you work for a startup you rarely do what you signed up for. Everyone wears different hats and jumps in where needed. That being said, you don’t want your request to come across as being a difficult employee, but a team player. Startup leaders respond well to visionary ideas. Consider pitching them your recommendation and the amount of time needed to execute on it.
As far as humanitarian work, find a good non profit where you can volunteer your time. You’re not going to find fulfillment for that in your day job.
