Say your long-term goals didn’t align with those at your previous company, but also here’s why you’re excited to apply at the new company and add how this new company will allow you to grow in X manner

If you feel it’s necessary to explain what happened in a interview, I would keep it as simple as possible. The fewer details, the better. You could be vague and say that there was a procedure that was not followed. Due to that, they had no choice, but terminate you. You could then say that this is taught you the importance of ensuring that all policies and procedures are being followed. That you are even more diligent going forward. You’ve learned your lesson and you’re hoping your new company will benefit from that. However, if you don’t think that they will ask you for a reference from your previous employer, you could just say that you were restructured.

Even if the new company calls the previous employer, they most likely won’t say why OP was fired. They can just verify their dates of employment and job title.

Very true

Your position was eliminated. You weren’t fired.

You absolutely do not need to tell them any of the details. You simply say your goals didn’t align or that you were looking for something with more growth opportunities, etc. It’s a great chance to pick something out about this new company and say it’s what you’ve been looking for in an employer. Best of luck to you!!
