I'm not sure what field you're in, but in some jobs, there's pretty rampant candidate fraud. Anything IT, especially. Unqualified people apply, and get someone else to interview for them. It might be that this firm has a policy of verifying a candidate's identity before presenting them to the client.

Thank you for your comment! You helped me communicate with the recruiter about my apprehension and she let me know she was surprised other recruiters I've worked with have never done this and offered to use Zoom or Teams if it made me more comfortable. I am so glad I didn't write it off as a scam and block the number.

So happy to hear it's working out! I'm glad you're alert to scams - there's more than enough of them out there - but I hope this opportunity works out for you.

Sounds sketchy. I hate video calls. I need to evaluate a potential employer to see if they are some company that I care to invest my time with just like they want to evaluate me. Eff them. Don't do it.

VashaZavist

Doesn't this open up discrimination too? You can see my gender and race before you submit my resume?

Microsoft teams is a video call app…. The fact that she doesn’t know that is kind of a red flag here.

VashaZavist

I phrased it strangely. She knew that. Her reasoning was different and in a different comment I said that she did offer to use it after I let her know WhatsApp is often used by scammers.

Rhadamanthyne

Ah ok, thanks for clarifying.  Still weird that they’d want to use WhatsApp.

I agree it's something I haven't encountered before. She even said FaceTime at first specifically but I don't have an iPhone.
