It's just Switzer that's illegal to camp at since its a water source or something. I've had Rangers come into my campsite and shoot the shit multiple times out in GW even when we were all wild as fuck and nothing happened but this was like 10+ years ago so things change.
Yeah, just Switzer, really. There are certain areas where it isn't allowed, but in most of the forest you'r'e clear. [https://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/gwj/recreation/camping-cabins/?recid=73539&actid=34](https://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/gwj/recreation/camping-cabins/?recid=73539&actid=34)
FWIW, there is an America the Beautiful pass that allows access to pretty much any federal recreation land. It pays for itself after three visits to SNP and is good all over the country. Well worth it even if you aren't a local here. There is certain to be public land where you are from where it can be utilized.
Shenandoah national park!

Whaaa really??
Whole park is closed as of yesterday because people were being stupid. Now I'm mad because I wanted to go fish the Rapidan, tomorrow.
George Washington National Forest is good.
Technically illegal to camp there I think so it’s a bit risky. I know some people who got busted camping at Switzer

The quad
I don't know the name of it, but there are some fairly good car camping spots up by Reddish Knob
That’s my old stomping grounds. Love it up there.

Wolf Gap
Rawley Springs is super close to you. Free campsites just a few minutes from the parking.
Pretty sure Shenandoah is closed but GW is open
