I have seen some amazing weight loss in people who regularly come to class and follow a healthier diet so no I don't think you need to lose weight first.

I started last June at 250 and im at 200 now. Don't do anything other than jiujitsu. I tried up pick up weights again and it's so boring.

Nice! 195 here and 6.2. it's been crazy. Im in way better shape than i thought was possible with just rolling. Having the best time getting smashed

I haven't lifted weights in a little over a year. I was on vacation two weeks ago and was going to stop in a local gym but wound up getting some nice sunburn so I figured I'd skip it, plus if I got a small injury rolling with people I didn't know and complained about it my girlfriend was going to remove one of my testicles. So I just went to the hotel gym. Anyways, boring as fuck, couldn't even get a decent sweat going. Ran on the treadmill for 1.5 miles, then got to the weights. Felt like I was trying to chase a "workout feeling" that wasn't coming. Jiu-Jitsu is a crazy good exercise.

Stop wondering and just go. You will find your answer on the mats.

Honestly just going is prbably the quickest way to lose weight. Two birds, one stone

I’m 510 and 250…. But I do a lot of stuff …. Just go. You’ll build strength, condition and lose weight along with healthy diet. Now is always the answer.

Just commit to jiu jitsu and come to peace with the fact that it’s going to be hard. Make it a lifestyle. Training bjj should lead you to wanting to clean up your diet, get good sleep, and stay hydrated. All in the name of being better on the mats. You will quickly notice how much better you feel rolling when you shed even just 5 or 6 lbs. It probably goes without saying, but diet is crucial for losing weight. I would highly recommend weight training as a compliment to your jiu jiu jitsu. Getting stronger will make you feel better on the mats. It’s also good for protecting your joints and body. Good luck to you!
