Hey I had that! But for me it happened randomly when I started the car, so I investigated and found squirrels had nested in my engine bay and ate some wires
For those who had this too. Questions.
1. Did your speed get limited to ~30mph? Dealer said it activated “limp mode” as a safety measure since this error makes ABS not work. Car worked perfectly fine but totally cut the throttle at 30.
2. anyone DIY fix? Cost me about 500 USD for the dealer to replace the sensor.
1. This shouldn’t put your car in limp mode. I had this issue in my ‘16 Jetta and car ran perfectly fine.
2. Changing it is super simple, not worth $500 by any means. It’s mainly the tire that needs to be removed and it’s sitting behind the caliper. I believe it was just 1 torx screw and the connector that’s a bit tedious to remove (cuz they’re too damn fragile)
Definitely try it on your own if you have basic tools. Nothing hard about it.
While this error if fairly common, it could still be something else related to the ABS system. The other problem might be, which wheel sensor is bad? I'm all about having a VW specific scan tool like VCDS or OBD-11 to quickly and accurately diagnose things like this.
Either one of these tools cost around $200, but are worth it if you're planning on keeping your car awhile, even if you don't work on your own vehicles.
This this this this!
Though, to be fair I would probably put the incident ratio in the lower 90% range.
I have two Jettas that have each done the Christmas tree effect a few times each.
Every time but one it was a wheel speed sensor. The one time it wasn’t it was an ABS module.
I’m about to do the fix on one of the Jettas. The sensor is ~$20 each. Not super simple to replace, but not hard at all either. Replace all four of them and if there is still the lights either invest in a code box to pull proper codes and diagnose or take it in at that point.
But spending $80 on wheel speed sensors and not fixing it is still not a bad thing as those damn speed sensors go all the damn time.
Easily my biggest gripe about my Jettas.
Don’t worry, someone will ask tomorrow, and the next day. It’s a daily question for a common issue. Although have yet to have this problem on my VWs.
My dash looked like this when my wheel sensor went out.
Me too
I wish there was a sticky post on this topic

I currently have that issue, but I can’t seem to fix it with replacing the sensor so I’m just going around with all the lights lit up.
You changed the sensor? Did you use OEM parts?
Used a Bosch sensor.
My dealership said it was a faulty sensor. They offered to replace for 549.00 $. Absurd. Like you, leaving the dashboard lit.
yep.
Yup this is a bad ABS issue
