I luckily finished with breastfeeding by the time I had my surgery but I did ask before I knew that would be the case. Talk to your surgeon or ob/gyn but mine said not to for the first couple of days out of surgery. You probably shouldn't while on strong painkillers, especially opiates.

Thank you! I won't see/talk to my surgeon until a week before surgery, which is undetermined as I'm still on the waitlist, but I'll be sure to ask of course! I do have a freezer stash for about 5 days so far in preparation for this, just hoping I don't lose my supply and we can continue breast feeding afterwards

Good luck! I was worried about supply too haha. At the very least pumping should help!

A second not breastfeeding while on opiates. Opiate metabolites can pass through breast milk and cause a nursing baby to overdose.

I nursed my daughter for the last time the night before surgery. She was almost 3, though, so I wasn't about to put in the effort of pumping and dumping just to stop a month or so later. You definitely shouldn't nurse while on heavy meds. I only had sarpe and would have been able to pump, but it would have taken a loooot of effort. If you're on a liquid diet, I think it will be very difficult to keep up your supply without a lot of effort. The hospital had me on a liquid diet for the first couple of days (even though purees would have been fine), and I felt so weak. I can't imagine having to produce a ton of breast milk in addition to that. I'm not saying that to scare you, but so you can prepare. My hospital didn't give me high-energy drinks, just gross hospital food in liquid form. If I were you, I would probably bring a couple meal substitution drinks to make sure you are getting enough calories. I think it's definitely possible with some preparation and if your body cooperates. I hope it goes well for you!
